As I write, the Jubileeweekend is still fresh in mymind. It was an amazingoccasion nationally, and evenmore amazing here inSwanage. We had the thelighting of the Beacon onThursday, the celebrations atPrince Albert Gardens andaround the town on Friday,

and the Civic Service on Sunday Evening. I lovecommunity festivals and celebrations; theyreally do bring people together. The vastnumbers of people who turned out inSwanage reminded me, once again, howfortunate I am to live in this wonderful place, where we are all so proud of our community.

I was privileged to be the Vicar of the Olympicparish in London. The Stadium, the AquaticCentre and much of the Olympic Park are in StJohn’s Stratford parish. Despite the inevitabledisruption in 2012, the community were ableto celebrate this historic occasion. AsStratford Churches, we joined in enthusiastically, organising a communityfestival in St John’s Churchyard for the whole of the Olympics andParalympics, with Christian entertainers from all over the world joining in tohelp us celebrate. We took our Sunday and midweek services outside into theChurchyard, sharing our prayers and praise with any passers-by who cared tojoin us. Following the Olympics, we continued to celebrate with an Annual“Love Stratford” Festival, again organised by the local churches, working inpartnership.

Festivals and community celebrations give us, as churches, the opportunity towork in partnership with others in the community. Churches, and church

members, have much to contribute to these celebrations. It was great to seethe large numbers of people from our churches joining in to help lead thecelebrations at Prince Albert Gardens on Friday, in many different ways, and Iwas pleased to share in the Civic Service on Sunday evening – our specialThanksgiving for the Queen’s faithful service over 70 years.

The prophet Jeremiah encouraged God’s people in exile to work for the goodof the place where they found themselves: “Thus says the LORD of hosts, theGod of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem toBabylon: …... seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, andpray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare”(Jeremiah 29:4 and 7)

Jesus also told us: ‘You are the salt of the earth; ….. You are the light of theworld…... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your goodworks and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13, 14, 16)

Sometimes Christians feel like exiles in the world, but the example of our Lordwas to get out, get involved, sometimes get our hands dirty, and show God’slove in action.

As a newcomer, it feels as if life is one big celebration in Swanage. The nextbig event is the Jazz Festival, and I look forward to being a volunteer steward. If you see me, please give me a wave. At St Mark’s we hope to have a jazz-themed service on Sunday 10th July at 10am; see our Facebook page for moredetails.

After the Jazz Festival comes the Carnival. Nick Viney, our Churches TogetherLeader, is organising a special Carnival Praise Service on Sunday 31st July at11am in the Bandstand. It’s our chance, as Churches, to add to the Carnivalatmosphere with some lively worship, to get together to pray for ourcommunity, and to thank God for the joy of living in Swanage. St Mark’s hasdecided to join in, partly because Covid forced the cancellation of the UnitedService in January. What an opportunity we have, in the Bandstand, (itself asymbol of community action), to take our worship into the world where ourFather has placed us!

ST MARY’S NOTES

It’s only 7 or 8 weeks since we said a reluctant andfond farewell to John and Helen Mann. Before John’sincumbency, we were without a Team Rector for 20months but the vacancy this time will, we hope andpray, be very much shorter. The advert for our new Team Rector was in theChurch Times in April, with interviews for candidates planned for 21st June. The appointment could be offered and accepted “on the day” but there couldbe an interval before offer and acceptance. The appointment will beannounced on the same day in the appointee’s present benefice and ourbenefice. Please pray for the Team Rector Designate and their family as theyprepare for the transition to the Swanage and Studland Team Ministry.

Our Team Vicar post was advertised on 10th and 17th June and interviews arescheduled for late July. Providing that a Team Rector is appointed, the TeamRector Designate will be involved in appointing our new Team Vicar.

Danny Smith stood down as churchwarden in April. He keeps a low profile inchurch these days, which belies the fact that he has been very active aschurchwarden and has taken forward various projects including the repair ofthe West Gable, new stone louvres in the Tower, the Faculties required andthe contact required with contractors and architect. Danny has a knowledgeof the church buildings second to none and he’s written us a “black book” ofuseful information about the building and he will continue to be a source ofinformation for the churchwardens. As well as this, Danny has been ParishElectoral Roll Officer for several years. Thank you, Danny, for your valuableservice at St Mary’s!

You may have noticed a change in the way the grass has been cut – or not - onthe edge of the stream where a “mini-meadow” is being developed with thehelp of Sustainable Swanage. Some months ago we gained the bronze EcoChurch Award so let’s hope this helps us gain marks towards silver! Therewere already many wild flowers there and pyramidal orchids are on view as Iwrite.

All Saints NotesIf you read the June issue of Church Alive, you may recall that I gave somenews of Alistair and Anna Youren, our Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)partners. With Anna falling pregnant, there was a fairly urgent need for themto get the family back to the UK. Here is an update from Alistair.

We made it back to the UK that first weekend and by the end of the week hada car sorted and had begun to figure out a place to stay. The real hurdlehowever was school for the kids. Everywhere we tried was full and the onlything we were offered was a waiting list or a really long drive. We had no ideawhat to do other than to pray and trust that God would provide, and provideHe did! In God's goodness He had a plan all worked out and the kids havebeen able to start at a small school just a short distance away. They've lovedit so far and it's such an answer to prayer - thank you so much for prayingwith us and for us in this regard. We were so amazed that in two weeks wecould leave Juba, arrive in the UK and sort out everything that needed to bedone - we know that it is all because God went before us.

We have had recent news, as well, from our CMS partners – Daniel and Sarahbased in Brazil. They, too, need our continued prayers. An extract from theirprayer letter reads as follows: Recife and Olinda have suffered terribleflooding in the last week. Roads have become rivers and people have lost

www.allsaints-swanage.org

Page 9: Swanage Parish Magazine

9

their homes, loved ones and possessions in the floods. Please pray for thepeople who have been affected by these floods including some of the staff atRevive and teachers at Sophie and Ana’s school.Family news - Praise God! Sophie wanted to be baptised after a youth campwith our church. She was baptised along with 50 other people in a beautifulriver not far from our house. She has loved and worshipped Jesus most of herlife and it was amazing, emotional and powerful to be part of her special day.We are now preparing for our trip back to England. However, last week Sophieand Sarah tested positive with Covid-19. Sophie is better but Sarah is still fullof cold. Please be praying that we would all be well to fly and that we wouldhave everything we need for the flights including negative test results to getthrough Portugal.

Somewhat belatedly, compared with some other churches, we are resumingthe offer of coffee each Sunday at the end of our 10.30 service. At the sametime, the committee agreed that it was time to give live streaming a break forthe third quarter of the year. A team of three has been needed to operatethe live stream each week and our thanks go out to all those who havecontinued to make this possible over such a long period of time. We knowthat many have been able to keep in touch with the church through watchingthe live stream, but with Covid restrictions becoming a more distant memory,we look forward to gathering together each week as a church family for ourtimes of fellowship and worship.

We celebrated Pentecost and the Queen’s Jubilee with a Breakfast at 10service on 5th June. Lots of people came and there was a very specialatmosphere and feel to our worship that day. It was good to share thoughtsof Pentecost alongside memories of the Queen’s remarkable reign. The fruitof the Spirit has been so very evident in her life as outlined in those well-known verses from Galatians 5 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Obedience to God’s call seems to be a thread running through this article andwe offer our thanks to the Youren family, to Daniel & Sarah and to HerMajesty the Queen for their lives of sacrificial and faithful service.

Finally, a reminder to pray for the Team Vicar interviews on 22nd July! Tim Silk

St Mark's Notes.

In the June edition of "Church Alive". Rev Dave Richards noted that I hadbecome Churchwarden of St Mark's, in succession to Margaret Chinchen.  Thisis in addition to the work I have done as Parish Treasurer since last June andwhich still continues. Two big jobs in a parish which I only came to 3½ yearsago!  My prayer, in which I ask you to join me, is that I will be able to do bothjobs efficiently and to the furtherance of God's work in Swanage.

Dave mentioned that I had been Churchwarden before.  For the previous 39years I worshipped in St Mary's Church Watford and was warden from 2004 -2010. Moving from a life and teaching career 20 miles outside London toSwanage has been a big change but I haven't regretted it for a minute.Although I have done the job before, each diocese and each church do thingsdifferently and I am learning a lot how things are done here, from Margaret,Anne, Marion and others and there are a series of meetings going on to workout where we go from here.  As I've always said about any new job I've takenon, please tell me if things aren't going as you like, or might expect, and I willfollow up any comments. I always say that it is impossible to offend me -there's a challenge!

Following the wonderful celebration of our church's 150th anniversary, I amreally optimistic for the future of St Mark's.  As the church is the people notthe building, I must say that in these 3½ years I have come to know a lovelygroup of people who, as Dave has said on more than one occasion, have anamazing array of talents and experience.  Some of these were referred to inlast month's St Mark's notes and I don't want to be repetitive but the

Page 11: Swanage Parish Magazine

11

development of our music, the welcoming of visitors, the enthusiasticplanning of events for the rest of the anniversary year which was evident atthe recent St Mark's Committee meeting (as Dave said last month, watch thisspace) and so many other things make me thankful to God for where we areand where we are heading.

Talking about "where we are", this could be taken in a number of ways, suchas in our spiritual lives, in our fellowship with others and in the activities thatwe are seen to carry out for our God . That was the sort of thing that I wasthinking of when I used those words in the last paragraph but I just want tomention three aspects of "where we are" which are different but perhapsrelated.

● We live in one of the most beautiful and popular holiday areas in thecountry.  At St Mark's, as we are hidden away up Bell Street, we don'tget as many casual visitors as St Mary's and All Saints' but what is ourattitude to any holidaymakers who find their way into our church ona Sunday morning?  I think that they will get a pretty good welcome, but do all of us believe it is part of our responsibility to welcomenewcomers, whether locals or visitors?

● We are part of the parish of Swanage and the benefice of Swanageand Studland.  The staffing arrangements are in a state of flux.  By thetime you read this we hope that the new Team Rector will have beenappointed and the process for appointing the Team Vicar will beunderway.  Are we ready for any changes which the new structure ofour ministry will entail?

● We are at the centre of the "village" of Herston.  Audrey's marvellousdisplay of photos, marking the anniversary of the church, showed thesort of community it was in the earlier years,  What about now? What are our responsibilities to reach out to the people involved withSt Mark's School, activities at Herston Hall, local hospitality andaccommodation establishments?  How should we use theopportunities we have - or seek to make new ones?  Most of theanniversary events for the rest of the year (again, "watch thisspace"!) will offer us chances to invite friends and neighbours or torestore links with former members.  What advantage will we take ofthese opportunities?

Page 12: Swanage Parish Magazine

12

In the June magazine, we noted that Clare Rogers had died in May and wewere pleased to welcome her family and friends to a memorial event duringthe morning service on 12 June.  Last month we were sad to hear the news ofthe passing of Julia (known to us as Julie) Allen.  When she was able to cometo church, she was a delight to see on a Sunday morning - always smiling andcheerful and always keen to catch up on the news of people she knew.  Thiswas in spite of her disability, following a stroke when she lived inLincolnshire.  Our commiserations go to Tony and their daughter Nicky whoso willingly pushed her wheelchair - and Julie's sisters who we were delightedto welcome every time they came.

St Mark’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations continue with Afternoon Tea andSongs of Praise on Sunday 24th July at 4pm. We hope to hold this event inthe Garden, if the weather allows. Do you have a favourite hymn? If so,please talk to Dave, who would like to hear about your favourites, and whyyou like them.

More from St Mary’s

A few words from Lavinia King – newly elected Churchwarden:

I’m not really sure how I managed to be “elevated” from 15 years in theChoir stalls to the important position of Churchwarden at St Mary’s, but hereI am, ready and certainly willing! It is an honour to take the place of DannySmith, who brought such wisdom and depth of knowledge for so many years.I was officially admitted at a Visitation Service by the Archdeacon ofSherborne, the Venerable Penny Sayer at St Mary’s Church, Dorchester on10th June, when I “offered myself to God for the responsibility for which Ihave been chosen”. I will be guided by Him and trust in the belief thatAndrew will also be watching over me.

A CHURCHWARDEN’S PRAYER

Eternal God, when you call your servants to a task, you promise to give them grace and strength toaccomplish it. Mercifully look upon those whohave special responsibilities in your Church aschurchwardens, that, beginning their work inreverence, following it through with obedience andcompleting it in faithful devotion, they may berenewed by your Holy Spirit to live in constantthankfulness to you; through Jesus Christ ourRedeemer. Amen

Studland Church & Parish News

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was asignificant moment for us all. It made usall think about a life well led and steadfastadherence to duty. It was wonderful towitness the outpouring of love for theQueen and respect for her dedication. Many thanks go to the many people in thevillage who made our own homage to theQueen so successful. It is difficult to namenames but we should include Mike andChrissie Neville and Steve and Julie Smithand the Young Farmers, Studland WI andSWL.

The St Nicholas choir were transported to the top of Ballard Down as wasDoris Royal who lit the Beacon built by Steve Smith. The choir under theguidance of Ian Pillow sang the Jubilee song on what was a magical evening. The combination of a stunning sunset together with amazing views and thegoodwill of over 500 people was a powerful image. The Beacon burnt brightlyand the Young Farmers, WI and SWL provided welcome refreshments. The Jubilee service was well attended and the Church looked beautiful thanksto the efforts of Sara Brown and over 30people who provided small bowls ofcolour to represent the jewels. Thanksalso to Mary Logan for her wonderfullilies. After the service the small bowlsdecorated the tables for the Jubileelunch which was attended by over 150people.Our own food was supplemented by thedelicious Jubilee Quiches and cakeprovided by the WI and sincere thanks totheir President Lynn and all the manymembers who baked and helped on theday. Andrew Churchill provided soundequipment and we all enjoyed singingmemorable tunes from across the eras.

Fortunately the rain held off until 3pm and we were really grateful thateveryone who could helped to move the furniture to safety and to clearaway.

There are 12 weddings over the next few months and some of these havealready been postponed twice before and we hope we are now returning to asense of normality. We are very grateful for the services of the choir and bellringers. If anyone should wish to join the choir or the bellringers they wouldbe very welcome. Contact me on 01929450691 [email protected] for more information. We are looking forward to the appointment of a new Team Rector forSwanage and Studland and we hope to have news later this month. The TeamVicar appointment will proceed once the team Rector has been appointed.Studland PCC will fund a “House for Duty” priest for the long term which willgive stability to the Parish.

In relation to the Ukrainian Refugees, weekly meetings took place on line tocoordinate the various services and agencies across the County involved inproviding aid. In order to find out what help Studland can provide we wouldbe very grateful if anyone who is able to be involved could pick up and fill in aquestionnaire from the church porch and return it to the Church letter box onthe steps of the Church Hall or email me (see above). Fund raising has had asignificant start thanks to the sale of items donated by Nina Rowlands but wewill need to build on this.As we look forward to welcoming many visitors to the Church through thesummer we know a warm welcome will await them. Each morning I reflect asI am sure many of you do, what a beautiful, blessed and peaceful place welive in. I hope we can all remain generous in sharing this with the thousandsthat will visit us this year.

Southern Cathedrals Festival – three choirs return in force

The combined forces of Salisbury, Winchester andChichester Cathedral choirs will come together for theSouthern Cathedrals Festival this July, presenting a realfeast of music in the majestic setting of SalisburyCathedral. The Southern Cathedrals Festival offers sacred choral

and organ music performed to the very highest standard by the threecathedrals' renowned choirs. The choirs will be performing separately andtogether and will be complemented by visiting performers. The music ispresented in concerts and within worship. Joyfully returning to publicperformances, this year’s three-day-long celebration of choral, organ andchamber music is hosted by Salisbury Cathedral. The 2022 festival marks twoimportant musical anniversaries in concerts and services – César Franck’sbirth in 1822 and Vaughan William’s birth fifty years later in 1872.

On Friday 15 July Vaughan Williams’ rarely heard song cycle The House of Lifewill be performed during a concert of chamber music taking place at 11.30 inthe Cathedral’s North Transept. Also on the programme are Wolf’s ItalianSerenade and Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet Op57. Sam Poppleton singsbaritone with George White on viola, Daphne Moody and Rosie Tompsett onviolin, Bryony Moody on cello and Festival Director David Halls on piano.

At 16.30 Evensong later that day, the boys and men of Salisbury andChichester Cathedral Choirs join together to sing the Vaughan Williams’anthem, Valiant for Truth, inspired by John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.

Franck’s important contribution to the romantic organ repertoire is alsoremembered in pre- and post-service music. Franck was the organist of theBasilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris and together with his friend andcollaborator, the organ builder Aristide Cavaille-Coll, revived the fortunes oforgan music in France following the French Revolution.

Late Night Bach is a regular feature of Southern Cathedral Festivals held inSalisbury. It returns this year on Friday at 21.00 with performances by soloistsDavid Halls and Alistair Watson on the Cathedral’s fine Blüthner grand piano.

Alistair Watson, a Lay Vicar in Salisbury Cathedral Choir, is an award-winningpianist who has performed with the Dunedin Sinfonia and the Christchurch

Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand. He spent two years studying piano andsinging at the Royal College of Music, followed by repetiteur training at theGuildhall School of Music and Drama.

David Halls is Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral and an award-winningorganist and composer.

On Saturday 16 July the girls and adult singers from all three cathedral choirs- Salisbury, Chichester and Winchester, perform Vaughan Williams’ Mass in GMinor during the Festival Eucharist at 10.30. The newly installed Bishop ofSalisbury will preach at the service.

Other concerts on 16 July include a performance by one of Europe’s leadinglute players, Salisbury based Elizabeth Kenny at 14.30 in St Thomas’ Church,Salisbury. Elizabeth, who is Director of Performance at the University ofOxford and professor of Lute at the Royal Academy of Music, performs aprogramme that includes arrangements of the Bach violin sonatas for lute.

In the evening the period orchestra, the Hanover Band, named for theHanoverian period of English history in which English music flourished, willaccompany all of the cathedral choirs in a performance of Haydn’s Creation, with soloists Rebecca Hardwick (soprano), Ruairi Bowen (tenor) and JakeMuffett (bass). The Creation received its first Salisbury performance in 1800as part of the then Salisbury Music Festival and has since become one of themost loved oratorios for audiences and performers alike.

The Southern Cathedrals Festival ends on Sunday 17 July with services sungby the full Cathedral Choir (adults, boys and girls) in Salisbury.

The 10.30 Eucharist features Mozart’s Coronation Mass, a nod to the Queen’sPlatinum Jubilee and Ave verum corpus.

15th July St Swithun (or Swithin) - saint for a rainy day

St Swithun is apparently the saint you can blame for rainy summers. It is saidthat if it rains on his special day, 15th July, it will then rain for 40 days afterthat. It all began when Swithun was made Bishop of Winchester in 852 byKing Ethelwulf of Wessex. It was an important posting: Winchester was thecapital of Wessex, and during the 10 years Swithun was there, Wessexbecame the most important kingdom of England.

During his life, instead of washing out people’s summer holidays, anddamping down their spirits, Swithun seems to have done a lot of good. Hewas famous for his charitable gifts and for his energy in getting churchesbuilt. When he was dying in 862, he asked that he be buried in the cemeteryof the Old Minster, just outside the west door.

If he had been left there in peace, who knows how many rainy summers theEnglish may have been spared over the last 1000 years. But, no, it wasdecided to move Swithun. By now, the 960s, Winchester had become thefirst monastic cathedral chapter in England, and the newly installed monkswanted Swithun in the cathedral with them. So finally, on 15 July 971, hisbones were dug up and Swithun was translated into the cathedral.

That same day many people claimed to have had miraculous cures. Certainlyeveryone got wet, for the heavens opened. The unusually heavy rain thatday, and on the days following, was attributed to the power of St Swithun.Swithun was moved again in 1093, into the new Winchester cathedral. Hisshrine was a popular place of pilgrimage throughout the middle ages. Theshrine was destroyed during the Reformation and restored in 1962. Thereare 58 ancient dedications to Swithun in England.

Editor: Nigel Beeton writes: This is the month of St Swithun. We all haverainy days. But after a rainy day often comes a sunny evening, and there’s apeculiar clarity to the air after rain. You can hear the birds singing from milesaround, and you can pick up the scent from flowers that sparkle in theevening sunlight, the droplets of water on the leaves shining like jewels. Attimes like that we can feel really close to God!

Evening Sun

After a day of cloud and rainThe evening sun comes out again.Forget the gloomy day that’s gone,And listen to the robin’s song!

In the sunshine’s golden glowSee the garden’s floral show! And nature, freshened, can rejoiceIn sparkling colour, scent, and voice.

If your day is damp and greyKnow the cloud will go away –The pouring rain will soon be doneAnd then will come the evening sun!
