BENEFITS OF USING CJ-4
Improved Soot Handling
– EGR creates more soot. To minimise the negative effects, the soot dispersancy capability of CJ-4 oils has been boosted.
Improved Oxidation Control
– Higher EGR rates result in increased operating temperatures that accelerate oil oxidation. CJ-4 oils have been formulated with improved high temperature anti-oxidants that reduce oxidation.
Superior Valve-Train Wear Protection
– CJ-4 oil category includes Cummins B-engine test that measures the oil’s capability to reduce tappet wear. CJ-4 oils have boosted wear protection for mid-range engines.
Backward Compatibility
– CJ-4 oil category is designed to be backward compatible. It is designed to meet the performance properties of previous categories and is compatible with older engines.
Enhanced Low-Temperature Pumpability
– API CJ-4 oils must meet new low-temperature requirements through selected engine tests. This ensures that they provide better low-temperature pumpability than previous categories.
Lower Levels of Oil Consumption
– Formulated with quality Group II base stocks that help lower oil volatility. Provides advanced soot control and cold start protection.
Other Benefits
– Reduced oil filter restriction at high soot levels
– Higher TBN level for long-life performance
– Endorsed and recommended by Detroit
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Why was the new API CJ-4 oil performance category developed?New emission standards for heavy-duty engines were phased in between 2007 and 2010. Engines meeting these new standards are equipped with advanced emission control technologies, including diesel particulate filters (DPF) and in most cases exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The new API CJ-4 performance category was developed to address both the unique needs of these new engines and to protect older engines while enhancing the life of the emission control system as required for regulatory compliance.
2. Do engine manufacturers recommend use of API CJ-4 oils to protect 2007 emission-controlled engines?Yes, API CJ-4 oils, used in engines running on ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel, are critical for the durability and performance of 2007 and newer engines that utilise advanced emission control technologies. These oils have been subject to the most severe qualification testing requirements of any API engine lubricant category. API CJ-4 oils are designed to meet the expectations of the engine manufacturer and the customer in engine performance and maintenance intervals.
3. How does the performance of API CJ-4 oils differ from previous categories?API CJ-4 oils have additive systems specially designed to improve the protection of both the engine power system and advanced emissions control systems like DPFs. Use of these new oils will help maintain the life of the emission control system as required for regulatory compliance. API CJ-4 oils are formulated for improved wear protection, deposit and oil consumption control, soot-related viscosity control, prevention of viscosity loss from shearing, used oil low-temperature pumpability, and protection from thermal and oxidative breakdown when compared to previous API performance categories.
4. How does the use of API CJ-4 oils impact my oil drain intervals?Specific oil drain recommendations vary widely depending on engine type, duty cycle, fuel type and other factors. As always, users should seek guidance from their engine or vehicle manufacturer regarding specific service recommendations.
5. Do I need to adjust my used oil analysis program for API CJ-4 oils?Yes, API CJ-4 oils may have a different fresh oil chemical profile from previous oils because one of the key requirements of the API CJ-4 category is the setting of maximum limits on the phosphorus, sulfur and sulfated ash content of oils. These limits are needed to protect the 2007 advanced emission control technologies. Users should seek guidance from their oil supplier and/or engine or vehicle manufacturer regarding any changes to used oil analysis programs for API CJ-4 oils.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
6. Do API CJ-4 oils protect older engines as well as API CI-4 or API CI-4 PLUS oils?Yes, API CJ-4 oils are designed for use in new engines as well as existing on-highway fleets. API CJ-4 oils are qualified utilising several new engine tests that are more severe than those used for API CI-4 or API CI-4 PLUS oils, thus defining a new category of oils with much more robust performance. API CJ-4 oils are formulated for improved wear protection, deposit and oil consumption control, soot-related viscosity control, prevention of viscosity loss from shearing, used oil low-temperature pumpability, and protection from thermal and oxidative breakdown when compared to previous API performance categories. As always, users should seek guidance from their engine or vehicle manufacturer regarding specific service recommendations.
7. Do API CJ-4 oils protect older engines if they are operated on 500ppm maximum sulfur fuel?Yes, API CJ-4 oils are designed to have performance benefits over API CI-4 and API CI-4 PLUS oils when using both 15ppm and 500ppm sulfur fuel, and qualification testing is conducted using both fuels. As a reminder, 2007 on-highway engines with advanced emissions systems must
use ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel containing 15ppm sulfur or less. In cases where older engines/vehicles are operated with 500ppm sulfur fuel, API CJ-4 is designed to protect the engine better than API CI-4 and API CI-4 PLUS. As always, users should seek guidance from their engine or vehicle manufacturer regarding specific service recommendations.
8. Can API CJ-4 oils be used in off-highway applications?API CJ-4 oils can be used in off-highway applications. However, the use of API CJ-4 oils with higher sulfur fuels, like those generally provided for off-highway use that may contain up to 5,000ppm sulfur, may result in revised oil drain intervals and other maintenance recommendations. As non-road fuel sulfur levels have been reduced, first to 500ppm in June 2007 and then to 15ppm in June 2010, check manufacturer recommendations.
STORAGE INFORMATION GUIDE
Outside Storage Of DrumsOutside storage of lubricants in drums should be avoided if possible, since exposure to the elements is not good under the best of conditions. Where it must be done, however, it is preferable that covered racks be used so that some protection is afforded.
This can be done with a covered open air shed, plastic sheeting or drum covers. Plastic sheeting tends to be a nuisance because it must be removed and then replaced after drums are distributed. And drum covers, which are plastic or metal caps over the drum, tend to sail away in a windstorm. Drums are normally stored on pallets and should be rotated so the bungs are parallel with the bungs on the drum next to it. This way a 2x4 piece of wood can be inserted under the bottom edge of the drum, parallel with the bungs to prevent water from collecting around the bungs. Bungs on oil drums are not waterproof. If the drum is allowed to remain flat on the ground and it rains, the water will collect on top of the drum. As the sun warms the product in the drum, it will expand and then it will cool and contract in the evening, sucking the water right past the bungs and into the product.
Storing drums on their side is a good way to prevent water from entering the drum but one-third to one-half of the drums will leak product from the bung unless you first remove the seal and tighten the bungs down tight. Drums stored on their sides should rest on wooden rails to keep the drum off the ground.
Suggested Lubrication Storage Life LimitsOxidation occurs in all oils that are in contact with air, including stored lubricants.
The base oil and additive combination affects the rate of oxidation and the presence of the thickener in grease can increase the degradation rate. But the environmental and storage conditions have the greatest influence on the rate at which the lubricant degrades. Increasing temperature at which the lubricant is stored by 10°C doubles the oxidation rate, which cuts the usable life of the oil in half. The presence of water, usually introduced as a result of temperature variations, increase the rate of oxidation.
Storage Time Guide For Lubricants Not Stored In Optimum Conditions As Previously Suggested
Lithium greases 12 months
Calcium complex greases 6 months
Lubricating oils 12 months
Emulsion type fluids 6 months
Soluble oils 6 months
Long-term storage at moderate temperatures in low humidity environments has little effect on most premium lubricating products.
Oil analysis should be performed on any suspect lubricants before use.
Consider labelling your lubricants with date put into service and purchase date.
All Alliance lubricants have a manufacturer’s batch number on labels so it is easy to track the date the lubricant was blended and packed.

ALLIANCE FORCE PLUS 68 Technical Data Sheet
ALLIANCE FORCE PLUS 68 hydraulic oil is based on highly ageing resistant solvent raffinates and fulfills, in many cases even surpasses, the minimum requirements made on HLP hydraulic oil.
Advantages/Benefits
Excellent oxidation stability and resistance to aging
Oil temperatures of over 80°C can occur in high-pressure systems, especially if the volume of the tank is small. Insufficient oxidation stability can lead to the formation of damaging by-products, which acidify the oil. This in turn causes polymerisation, which increases the viscosity of the oil and leaves lacquer-like deposits on valves and control units. ALLIANCE FORCE PLUS series of oils are based on high grade, special raffinates and contain additives that improve resistance to ageing. As these are long-life characteristics, they also increase the service life of the products.
Good elastomer compatibility
Elastomers used in hydraulic systems must neither shrink nor swell when in contact with hydraulic oil. To fulfil this specification, the ALLIANCE FORCE PLUS series of oils and such elastomers are tested for 168 hours at 100°C (DIN 53 505).
Excellent corrosion protection
Condensation can form in the machine’s oil tank when the hydraulic fluid cools, which in turn can lead to corrosion and wear. Metallic particles in the oil act as a catalyst, which accelerates the oxidation of the oil. The ALLIANCE FORCE PLUS series of oils contains surface-active ingredients that protect against corrosion when water is present.
