JAMES LEVERT DAVIS, a fifth generation African Methodist

Episcopal minister, is the son of the late Mother Dorothy Lynch, the

late Reverend Sam Davis and Mother Alma Davis. Bishop Davis

attended both the public and private schools of Alabama. Having

received the call to ministry at age 12, he attended Morris Brown

College in Atlanta, Georgia where he earned the Bachelor of Science

degree; Master of Divinity degree from the Turner Theological Semi-

nary and the Doctorate of Ministry degree from the Interdenomina-

tional Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bishop James L. Davis has preached and taught the good news of

Jesus the Christ for over 45 years. After seeking the divine guidance

of He who called him to higher service in Kingdom building cam-

paigned for twenty-two months on his mantra – “I Showed Up for

Work and God Blew My Mind”. On July 3, 2004, in Indianapolis, In-

diana he showed up for an opportunity to serve and was elected and

consecrated the 123rd Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal

Church during its 47th Quadrennial General Conference. He was

appointed to the 19th Episcopal District which encompasses the Re-

public of South Africa. While serving his first assignment Bishop

Davis’ vision of furthering the legacy of self-help and self-reliance led

to many accomplishments while living on the continent for four

years (2004-2008).

Bishop James L. Davis currently serves as the servant prelate of the 9th Episcopal District which encom-

passes the entire state of Alabama. As the spiritual shepherd, in 2008 and 2014, Bishop Davis visited all

275 churches throughout the state of Alabama. Under his leadership the 9th Episcopal District purchased

and renovated the District Headquarters located in the Downtown area of Birmingham, AL. Twenty-five

months later the District celebrated the mortgage burning, while still reporting $1.8 million in budget as-

sessments and giving back to the local churches over $60,000 to assist in various areas of need.

For six years, the 9th District saw phenomenal growth in evangelism through Pentecost gathered and Pen-

tecost scattered. He prayerfully spearheaded the coordination of a myriad of details executed by District

leaders and members, resulting in unforgettable worship experiences that have drawn over 25,000 wor-

shippers and witnesses throughout the state of Alabama, resulting in numerous accessions, conversions

and recommitments.

As Chair of the Board of Directors for Daniel Payne College, Bishop Davis has presented a phenomenal vi-

sion for its property. This project will serve as one of the instrument for which the District will find anoth-

er way to finance our church by erecting an income-generating facility. In August 2014 the Daniel Payne

College Foundation, Inc. of the 9th Episcopal District purchased the Daniel Payne Middle School as a $2.5

million cash-sale. Making this the largest property owned by an African American institution in the state

of Alabama. The Daniel Payne Community Plaza will be the new home for the District Headquarters, and

become a thriving space catering to the needs of the immediate Birmingham community and the state of

Alabama.

He is married to his partner in the ministry, Arelis Beevers Davis. They are the very proud parents of Dr.

Nicole Davis Pass and Damarys Monique Burnett, her husband, Christopher, three grandsons, Patrick

James and Ashton James Pass and Baron Christopher Valentino Burnett and one granddaughter-Noel

Olivia Burnett.

Allen Temple AME History

In 1863, a faithful group of individuals gathered to worship together under a brush arboreal – a canopy of tree limbs and

bushes – as there was no physical place of worship for the blacks of Woodstock, Georgia at that time. There was much to overcome for the founding members of Allen Temple AME on Arnold Mill Road. As the Civil war raged in the spring of 1863, before the decisive turn at Gettysburg, a slave’s life provided few comforts and fewer certainties. For many black people struggling to survive the cruelest institution perpetrated by man, the Gospel promised both. All that was lacking was a roof—so they built one. This faithful group both Baptist and AME members established Cherokee County’s first Afri-can Methodist Episcopal Church. The new church was named Allen Temple after one of their devoted members, Deacon Allen Dial. The first Trustees were Miles McAfee, Giles Haney, James Fowler, Dr. Will Dan and Sister Benson. Allen Temple A.M.E. Church predated the city of Woodstock and the railroad that runs through it.

In 1909, members and friends of Allen Temple built a small, wooden frame structure under the pastorate of Rev. B. W. Wilson. There was a lot of effort that went in to the building of that structure. In those days, all of the men worked twelve to fourteen hour days on their jobs and in the fields but they still found time to pour their sweat into the building of their church. The one-room building was heated by a wood-burning stove. It had no electricity or in-door plumbing. The church was located near the center of the now historic downtown Woodstock. The Presiding Elder was Rev. J.O. Iverson. The Trustees were Bro. Ralph Wormley, Bro. George Bailey, Bro. Frank Blackwell and Bro. William Shaw. In 1924, Sis. Luella McDonald was elected to be the secretary of the church. She served in this capacity until 1987—63 years!!!! Sis. McDonald taught Sunday School, attended all of the local and state conventions and was very active in Allen Temple church.

For a number of years, Allen Temple Church shared its property with the first black school in Woodstock. Several children at the church attended the school consisting of one large room partitioned into a classroom and a lunch area. The school was called Woodstock School and held grades one through seven. The school remained in operation until the early 1940’s.

In 1977, a new church was built on the same track of land. It was a hard struggle but it was well worth the effort. Most of the work building the church was done by members and friends in their spare time. Money was raised by selling dinners, soft drinks and holding raffles. Many dinners were cooked and sold to church members, as well as members of the com-munity. Leading the fundraising efforts for the church, with the institution of the Brownlee Tea, was a group of hardwork-ing and dedicated women. Sis. Lillie Mae Brownlee, Sis. Leslie Edwards, Sis. Polly Johnson, Sis. Mildred Merriweather, Sis. Beatrice McConnell, Sis. Dolly Foster and Sis. Clara Foster provided food and fellowship at the Brownlee’s home to kick-off the Christmas season and to raise money for the church that they loved so much. On June 5, 1977, under the leadership of Pastor Clarence Neal and Presiding Elder W.L. Scarborough, the cornerstone was laid. The first service was held on June 12, 1977. In 1979, the church steeple was added as a result of a donation of $3,000 received from the Johnston Foundation in loving memory of Sis. Minnie Gay, the mother of Sis. Lillie Mae Brownlee, lifelong member of the church. On April 1, 1984, the church was dedicated under the Pastorate of Rev. R. L. Miller and Bishop Earnest L. Hickman.

In 1991, after identifying a need in the community, Pastor Spencer L. Booker and the church congregation answered the call of God and embarked on a “Faith Venture” to erect a Multi-Purpose Community Ministry Center that would provide a place of fellowship and support to the community. On

October 20, 1991, the ground breaking ceremony for this new annex was performed.

In 1993, Pastor Carl A. Moore accepted God’s will to lead Allen Temple as the Senior Pastor. The congregation had about seventy members. Within five years, the church grew to five hundred members with many young couples with small chil-dren. Pastor Moore said that his calling was to “preach the Bible and make disciples’. He was excited for Allen Temple to be involved in the community.

On October 8, 1995, the new Fellowship Hall was completed. In addition to completing the Annex, the sanctuary was com-pletely renovated including new pews, pulpit furnishings, carpeting and a sound system. The pews were donated to the church by the members. Presiding Elder S. W. Wicker provided the District oversight and the Rt. Rev. Donald G. K. Ming was Presiding Bishop.

In December of 1995, the church purchased a house adjacent to the property and 1.2 acres of land for use as a youth recreation and computer training center. In late 1997 and early 1998, several computers were purchased and others do-nated to provide basic computer training. The house quickly became a center of activity for the growing numbers of youth in the church and later became known as the G.A.P Shack – God’s Anointed People.

In July of 1997, the church’s parking lot was paved and the grounds were extensively landscaped further enhancing both the aesthetic and functional presence of the church.

“Golfing For Christ” Golf Tournament was established as a Ministry in 1998. In 2001 the name was changed to the “Jay (Dude) Brownlee Golf Tournament” All proceeds from the tournament have been used for scholarships. To date, we have been blessed to give over Fifty (50) $1,000.00 scholarships to deserving high school students who live in the Cherokee and Cobb county areas.

By 1999, the church membership had grown to one thousand. The membership included a large and still growing number of youth actively led by Youth Minister Rev. Kevin Mitchell who joined Allen Temple in May of 1999. Two temporary struc-tures were added to the property behind the church to accommodate a number of youth activities, Bible studies and com-munity programs.

Church History

In January of 1999, Allen Temple held its first Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Recognition Celebration Breakfast. A cross section of Cherokee County citizens attended. The guest speaker was the Honorable Michael Thurmond a member of Georgia’s Labor Commission. The MLK Unity Breakfast, as it is now called, has grown tremendously and is now in a part-nership with Cherokee County Government.

In March of 1999, a Building Commission was formed under the leadership of Mr. Snow Mitchell to begin the process of building a new church. In May of 2000, the purchase of 31.36 acres of land, less than a mile from the current location, became a reality. On August 13, 2000, the land was formally dedicated.

With great excitement, the Lifestyle Capital Stewardship Campaign began in March of 2001, guided by the Christian-based Genesis Group of Atlanta. Under a unified theme “God is Working,” leaders and members of the Allen Temple family com-mitted more than two million dollars to the building of the new church to be constructed in three phases. The “First Fruits” service was held on June 24, 2001. On Palm Sunday, March 24, 2002, the Ground Breaking Celebration was held. The congregation walked from the current edifice to the new church property singing praises to the Lord and waving palm leaves. The Rt. Rev. Frank C. Cummings officiated.

In addition to membership growth during this period, Allen Temple Church expanded in service to the community through a grant awarded in conjunction with the Cobb Compassionate Communities Program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Center for Faith-Based Initiatives in October of 2002. Through this program, Allen Temple

provided job enhancement, job preparation and English/Spanish language training to residents of Woodstock and sur-rounding communities.

In October of 2003, construction began on phase one of the new church. On October 3, 2004, Allen Temple opened the doors of a new, 730-seat sanctuary with a grand foyer, state-of-the-art audio/visual system and 77-seat choir stand. Pas-tor Moore and church leaders led members into the new sanctuary in prayerful silence. Pastor Moore delivered the first sermon to over 900 members and visitors in attendance. The new sanctuary was dedicated December, 2004, by Bishop William P. DeVeaux, Presiding Prelate.

After the sale of the old building in 2005, the members again began a pledge campaign in order to amass funds to begin the building of the Second Phase of the new structure.

Phase two of the Church building project began September, 2006, with an anticipated completion date of August, 2007. The completion date was met and the Cornerstone Laying Service done on September 30, 2007.

Meanwhile, in September of 2006, The Christian Education Advisory Committee started looking into laying the groundwork for a high quality Christian based Pre-school in the Woodstock area. Allen Temple Christian Academy (ATCA) was founded in 2007. Allen Temple Christian Academy reinforces the church’s desire and commitment to train children in the way that God has ordained and to equip them for academic excellence and long term success.

Through, the leading of the Holy Spirit, the church’s focus was to reach beyond its walls. Adopting a theme of “Being a Community of Unity”, Allen Temple instituted programs aimed at demonstrating Jesus’ love for all people, to its neighbors. Our Nursing Home Outreach, Boys Mentoring Ministry and Missionary programs, along with our partnerships with minis-tries such as Angel Food and MUST Ministries, were just the beginning of our efforts to impact the Woodstock community for the kingdom of Jesus Christ.

In 2011, Pastor Moore had another vision of taking our message to the community with “Pass It On”. Our aim was to win souls to Christ, meet the needs of people in the Woodstock and surrounding communities and hold an event for Christian focused fellowship. We took our program of sharing the gospel message to Woodstock Park for an all day event for the community. Food, fun and fellowship were in abundance. But the greatest thing of all was that souls were saved!

In the year 2013, Allen Temple celebrates “150 year Anniversary”, has approximately 1513 members and 44 ministries serving its membership and the surrounding community. Allen Temple Christian Academy has expanded to five classes with nine employees, one of which is a full time director. We have a bookstore named in honor of one of our member, Ruth McAfee. Allen Temple A.M.E. Church continues to grow and prosper under the leadership of Pastor Carl A. Moore, Sr. and a dedicated ministerial staff. We rejoice from the past and leap into the future.

In the year 2014, Allen Temple Christian Academy added a Kindergarten Program and has a total enrollment of 65 stu-dents. The “Jay (Dude) Brownlee Golf Tournament” has been renamed “Allen Temple A.M.E. Church Golf Event”. We re-designed the Youth Wing of Allen Temple Church to make the area more youth friendly.

Allen Temple praises and thanks God for the following servants who have been members of Allen Temple Church for more than 50 years! They are:

Sis. Lillie Mae Brownlee Sis. Leslie Edwards Sis. Polly Johnson Sis. Dolly Foster Bro. Kenneth Johnson
