“The book may go to a second printing
soon, but nothing besides a few typos
are changing.
Lots has happened from a civil rights perspective (bad to worse as you can
imagine), but the environmental stuff is
as detailed in the book with the
exceptions that a lot more damage was done around Whistler and Cypress
Mountain”.
During the first week of June 2009, author Chris Shaw was confronted by
two police officers in the city of Vancouver where the 2010 Winter
Olympics will be held. The police told him they wanted to
talk to him about his book, “Five Ring Circus”, a critical analysis of the
Vancouver Games.
“There will be 15,000 soldiers on our streets with massive surveillance
programs already under way. There will be cameras on every street corner
with face recognition software and voice recognition software for the
phone lines. We are facing a freaking nightmare for civil rights."
Chris: "The costs have gone through the stratosphere. It's $7
billion so far - that we know about. The security costs alone
will be $1 billion. We have taken on massive debt that will
probably take 30 years to pay off”
"The Winter games tend to come in at $10 billion and the
Summer games should cost a
total of $20 billion.”

Gov't places Olympics costs at 13 billion
euros
Alternate Culture Minister Fani Palli Petralia
estimated total costs for the staging of the 2004
Athens Olympic Games to be around €13 billion
in comments she made during a radio interview
on Tuesday.
Additionally, Petralia said that a frugal budget for maintenance of the venues stood at around €100 million. She said that
the ministry is waiting for local authorities to submit proposals regarding certain venues for which no interest has been
expressed.
In response, the press office of the main opposition PASOK party called on the government to provide a detailed break-
down of costs. It also accused the government of "managing to devalue so much and such important achievements of the
Greek people in a short period of time."
“Vancouver's Olympic bylaw is an infringement on my Charter rights and those of all people who wish to express themselves and to listen,” said Dr. Shaw.
“If the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is to be a guarantee of anything, if it is to be more than words on paper, this bylaw cannot be allowed to stand.”
Whistler's little “white elephant”
— the Whistler Sliding Centre —
cost $104.9 million and uses 100 kilometres of ammonia
refrigeration piping and 68,000 kilograms of ammonia to keep
the track frozen.
