WHAT’S INSIDE:
Fair time is a busy and exciting time for 4-H and FFA families. Remember, the
focus of your fair experience should be on your learning and growth! It's
not about the ribbons or the trophies, it's about the teamwork, friendships, trying
something new, knowing you gave it your all and learning how you can improve
for the future. You are all winners in my book!
I challenge all of you to show a non-4-H friend your projects and tell them about
all the great things you have done to prepare for the fair!
4-H is not just about the County Fair! BUT, the Fair is a very important part to
4-H'ers, as it is a platform for youth to showcase the projects you have been
working on through-out the past year! So, give it your ALL! Continue to ‘Make
The Best Better!’
The July Newsletter is full of a lot of important information! I strongly encourage
families who received the newsletter electronically to print it and have it
available at home so you don’t miss out on any summer opportunities and fair
reminders! I look forward to seeing you all at the 2019 Allamakee County Fair!

stock auction participant to write a thank you note (addressed and stamped) to his/her buyer(s) prior
to receiving their auction check in order to guarantee every buyer receives a thank you note.

would like a photo of you with your livestock auction animal to present to your buyer after the auction. Pho-

LIVESTOCK ENTRY DAY: WEDNESDAY, JULY 17
LIVESTOCK REMINDERS
The Fair Board is encouraging exhibitors to unload animals and supplies at the fairgrounds on Wednesday,
July 17 starting at 10:00 AM. Exhibitors need to return to weigh-in their market animals from 5-8 PM. By un-
loading early, this may ease the traffic congestion during peak hours.
LIVESTOCK FAIR INFORMATION
Friendly Reminders: ALL fans for cattle in the cattle barns (Dairy, Beef, Sweeney) must blow North. Meaning no butt fans or aisle fans. You may have to redesign your fan racks and exhibit area. If we all work together to overcome the electrical issues it will make for a safer and more pleasurable experience.
Stalls are reserved for livestock, feed and livestock supplies.
Allamakee County Fair Book can also be found online at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/page/member-info
Livestock Auction: Livestock Superintendents remind exhibitors selling livestock to stay after auction to help load livestock and finish cleaning stalls. Looking for livestock dads to assist with Livestock Auction Set-Up on Sunday at 10 AM (Need about a dozen guys).
Swine Exhibitors—You must clean your swine pens out on Sunday after the auction. Bedding may be piled
in the arena after the pigs have been hauled out. Please remember to return on Monday morning to pow-
er wash and tear down these pens. Many hands make light work!
Back Tags: Please remember to keep your back tags, you will get one back tag at your first livestock show and that is your back tag for the rest of fair.
The Youth Development Committee will be hosting a Herdsmanship Contest at the fair again this year. The clubs will be
scored each day. The club with the highest score will be awarded the winner during the Live-stock Auction on Sunday.
Each club member exhibiting livestock will receive an extra two Clover Bucks to be redeemed at the Clover Store during
the annual 4-H Soup Supper & Awards Program in the fall. There will also be a daily certificate given to the best barn
that day. Guidelines include:
Cleanliness— alleys, stalls, pens and/or cages – clean bedding for animals; bedding is confined in the stall/pen/cage
and not the walkway; area free of trash; manure removed frequently.
Arrangement of Exhibit - attractive, neat, equipment stored. Walkways cleaned, raked, and/or swept. Appearance of
Animals - animals clean, brushed, tied or penned properly.
Safety – Cages and stall doors properly secured; walkways clear of any obstructions, such as pitchforks and brooms;
fans properly secured.
Overall - Club members should be courteous, polite, and observe all rules and regulations set by the Fair Board, staff
and volunteers. Active participation in cleaning, maintenance and caring for the livestock should be observed at all times.

4-H Exhibit Goal Write-Up Every exhibit judged during Conference Judging on Tuesday, July 16 will need a write-up attached which
answer the questions below. Judges have 7-10 minutes to evaluate the total exhibit on the learning involved,
workmanship, and general appearance. The information needs to be well organized and detailed.
1. What did you plan to learn or do? (What was your exhibit goal(s)?)
2. What steps did you take to learn or do this?
3. What were the most important things learned?
Also…
If you have a Home Improvement, Visual Art or Clothing exhibit, don’t forget to include your Design Ele-
ments or Art Principles in your write-up. See the fairbook for complete details.
If you are using other’s work of art, crafts, recipes, etc., it is important to give credit to those individuals or
companies who have created materials, resources, logos, trademarks, photos, etc. in your write-ups. If in
doubt...ask permission. An example of a letter requesting permission is available online at
www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee or at the Extension Office. Getting permission takes a long time—
don’t delay. If using Pinterest for exhibit ideas, please note that you must credit the original creator not
Pinterest. Pinterest is a portal, like Google. It is a virtual display board—not the original source of the
idea.
Food & Nutrition exhibitors please read the Inappropriate Food Exhibits for Iowa 4-H Fairs publication.
Copies can be found at the Extension Office, fairbook, or our webpage. Preserved food entries must in-
clude a Food Preservation Exhibit label. Only food processed after August 1, 2018 is acceptable. Labels
are available at the Extension Office or visit www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/page/member-info
When using the 4-H emblem, please follow the 4-H emblem guidelines. A copy of these guidelines can
be obtained at the Extension Office.
As you work on your exhibits, write down what you did, keep track of expenses, and what you have
learned. All of these things should go into your exhibit goal write-up and 4-H record book.
Design Elements & Art Principles If you are taking a Clothing, Visual Arts, or Home Improvement exhib-
it to the fair this year, don’t forget to include Design Elements or Art Prin-
ciples that are relevant to your exhibit. Below is a list of Design Ele-
ments and Art Principles. Refer to the fair book for complete descrip-
tions.
Please take the time to include these important pieces of information in
your exhibit. See the example below of how to use the Design Element
texture in a reupholstered chair exhibit write-up.
Texture is a surface characteristic that can be touched or seen. Con-
trasting textures add interest. In my exhibit, the chair has two textures. The upholstery is a rougher, rigid tex-
ture. The legs of the chair are smooth and follow a curve. The oversized upholstery tacks also add smooth
texture.
