Serving the People of Carroll County As Iowans adjusted to life during the COVID-19 pandemic,

ISU Extension and Outreach continued to prioritize health

and safety as we delivered research-based education to the

people of Carroll County. During 2021 we focused on the

following efforts.

Showcasing 4-H at the County Fair The Carroll County Fair provided the opportunity for youth to

demonstrate what they had learned through their 4-H project

work over the past year. 182 static exhibits were judged.

There was 415 livestock entries. Several extension

workshops prepared 4-H’ers for county fair and included a

painting workshop, a Crime Scene Investigation/Federal

Bureau of Investigation regional workshop, a virtual cookie

decorating workshop, sewing workshops, a bucket bottle

workshop, a small engines workshop, and woodworking

workshops.

Working toward Recovery As our state works toward recovery from the

pandemic, ISU Extension and Outreach in

Carroll County has been reviving the

economy.

Supporting Iowans in reviving the Iowa

economy, Carroll County held a StoryWalk®

in Carroll and Coon Rapids. The program is

designed for families to engage in literacy

activities while getting exercise, learning

about content areas (STEM, art, social

studies), and enjoying the outdoors. The goal

was to revive the local economy by getting

families downtown, participating in a safe

activity together, and seeing what the

downtown shopping district has to offer. The

StoryWalk® took place during a time that

shopping is not usually forefront on the

public’s mind. We wanted to draw attention

to our small, local businesses to help them at

a time that they were needing to start

recovering from the effects that the

pandemic had on the economy.

Nutrition and Wellness Participants gain confidence in healthy food and cooking

practices through the Healthy and Homemade program.

ISU Extension and Outreach in Carroll County partnered

with IKM Manning Schools to deliver a Healthy and

Homemade workshop in May. The sessions provided

resources to educate participants about making healthy

meals at home on a budget. Ten adults participated in the

series, led by Human Sciences Specialist in Nutrition and

Wellness Ann Parker.
