maintained her perfect record on her belated return in June with a similarly authoritative victory at Randwick.

She has since finished first and second in a pair of barrier trials at Rosehill and Randwick respectively, and Warwick Farm-based Baker is thrilled with her condition heading into the Silver Shadow.

“She is in tip-top order. I thought her second trial when she was second was much better than her first,” Baker told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She is a filly that I’ve always had a lot of time for. After her first win she had a little fetlock chip that had to come out, and I thought if we had been able to go to the Magic Millions with her she would have been very competitive.”

A daughter of 2004 Emirates Stakes (registered as the Cantala Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Sky Cuddle (Snippets), Champagne Cuddles has pleased Baker since her most recent trial and he is confident she will handle the step up into Group company.

She will race from barrier two in Saturday’s Group Two and is set to be ridden for the first time by jockey Tye Angland.

“She is bred to be a good filly being out of a Group One winner. Her second start I expected her to win and she went and won it well,” he said.

“It’s new territory stepping up to a Group Two but I don’t think the 1200 metres will hold any concern. She has got a good fitness base and her work since her last trial has been very good, so we’ve got a bit of confidence going into the race.”

Baker also pointed to the filly’s temperament as a factor in her success to date, and he believes that she is likely to get further than 1200 metres in time.

“I wouldn’t have said she could get further three or four months ago, but she relaxes so well and she is such a professional that she can switch off,” he said.

“She is a readymade racehorse, she knows what it is all about and she is very 'push button', so hopefully that will help her get out to further later.”

Champagne Cuddles is currently on the second line of the betting at $3.20 with CrownBet, just ahead of the Lindsay Park-trained Formality ($3.40).

The Coolmore-raced filly ran to a high level as a juvenile, winning the MRC Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) in February before finishing third to stablemate Catchy (Fastnet Rock) in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) three weeks later.

After finishing down the field in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), she rounded out her campaign with a close second in the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick during The Championships, and Coolmore’s Sebastian Hutch said she is expected to run a big race first up.

“Formality was one of the best of her generation at two and the team at Lindsay Park have been delighted with her since she resumed training over the winter,” Hutch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“The Silver Shadow looks a nice starting point for her and while the expectation is that she will improve for the run, she is the highest rated filly in the race and should be hard to beat.

“Coolmore is fortunate to be involved in a number of talented leading three-year-olds going into the spring, with Formality joined by the likes of Tulip, Siege Of Quebec and Merchant Navy amongst others, so it is an exciting time of the year.”

However, both Champagne Cuddles and Formality are currently behind the James Cummings-trained Alizee in the betting, with CrownBet installing the daughter of Sepoy (Elusive Quality) as the $2.45 favourite.

Alizee, who is a half-sister to Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Astern (Medaglia d’Oro), broke her maiden in impressive fashion at Warwick Farm on 2 August, and that form received a boost when the second Songlike (Your Song) scored at Canterbury yesterday.

“She’s the only filly in the field with match fitness and she gets a wonderful opportunity on top of the ground here,” Godolphin head trainer Cummings said.

“It was a classy win first up, she could hardly have been more impressive.”

The John Thompson-trained Group Two winner One More Honey (Onemorenomore) ($11) and Kris Lees’ Group Two placegetter Villa Carlotta (Street Cry) ($12) complete the high-class field.

One More Honey won the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in February and must carry a two kilogram penalty as a result, while Villa Carlotta was third in the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at her second start in March.

Winx Draws Barrier TwoChampion mare Winx (Street Cry) will face seven rivals when she seeks to secure her 18th consecutive race win in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained mare, who has not been seen since winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick, has drawn barrier two with regular rider Hugh Bowman on board. She will line up alongside her stablemates, Group One winner Foxplay (Foxwedge) and Antonio Guiseppe (Shocking), who have drawn barriers three and five respectively. Meanwhile, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have accepted with stakes winner Ecuador (High Chaparral) and Team Hawkes will run Group One winner Inference (So You Think) in the $250,000 race.

Trapeze Artist Faces Nine RivalsBlack Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) will line up against nine rivals when he resumes in the Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) at Randwick on Saturday. The Gerald Ryan-trained three-year-old has drawn barrier six for jockey Tim Clark and will face the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Assimilate (Sebring), who will be aiming to keep his unbeaten record intact having won his

first two career starts. Meanwhile Lindsay Park have accepted with four-time winner Eshtiraak (Street Cry), while Godolphin trainer James Cummings will send Sanctioned (Teofilo) who will be resuming having not been seen since breaking his maiden at Newcastle in March.

Ten For Show CountyA total of ten runners have accepted for Saturday’s Show County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick with the field headed by the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained ATC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Invader (Snitzel), who has drawn barrier seven for jockey Tommy Berry. Other notable entries include the Gerald Ryan-trained Moreton Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Deploy (Fastnet Rock), who will race from barrier ten, while Ron Quinton has accepted with Group Three winner Daysee Doom (Domesday), who has drawn barrier six for jockey Andrew Adkins.

Classy Quinton Pair Ready To ResumeTrainer Ron Quinton hopes he can secure a stakes double at Randwick on Saturday, as he prepares to run Group Three winner Daysee Doom in the Show County Quality and Group Two winner Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense) in the Toy Show Quality (Gr 3, 1300m). Dixie Blossoms is resuming having not been seen

since running third in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick in April, while Daysee Doom is resuming having not been sighted since winning the Dark Jewel Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) at Scone in May. "They're back and ready to go. You'd have to think they'd be very competitive in whatever they run in again this season," Quinton said.

Six For Weir In LawrenceDual Group One winner Hartnell (Authorized) has drawn barrier nine for jockey Craig Williams in Saturday’s P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. The seven-year-old gelding will face 13 rivals including six from the Darren Weir stable. These are headed by five-time Group One winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars), Japanese import Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) and Gailo Chop (Deportivo), who have drawn barriers five, 13 and ten respectively. Meanwhile, Weir has also accepted with Group Two winner Amelia’s Star (Testa Rossa) (one) and trainer Mick Kent will run Group One-winning mare Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice) in the $200,000 race.

on Saturday. "Going into this Saturday, there is no question that he is going to be better for the run," Rawiller told Racing.com. "If I had drawn an outside barrier I think it might have been tough for him because he might not have been ready to make things happen like he normally would so we might have had to ride him a bit quiet. But from barrier five, he's going to land in a nice position and we'll be able to give him a rest. It's going to bring him right into the race although he's going to be better for the run."

Tosen Stardom Not Certain For Lawrence Despite having been accepted for Saturday’s P B Lawrence Stakes at Randwick, Tosen Stardom may not line up in the Group Two on Saturday according to Jamie Lovett of owners Australian Bloodstock. Tosen Stardom, who was a Group Three winner in his native Japan, would be having his first start for six months having not been seen since running second in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). "He (trainer Darren Weir) just wanted to put him in to have a look at the race having been out for so long and considering how hot the Memsie is going to be, whether he'll be rammed right up for a first up seven furlong race," Lovett told Racing.com. "Just having not raced for quite some time is our only concern.”

11 Entered For Quezette StakesA total of 11 horses have accepted for Saturday’s Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) with the entries headed by a Lindsay Park-trained trio, including Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning filly Catchy (Fastnet Rock). Drawn in barrier five,

Catchy will line up alongside stablemates Tulip (Pierro), who won the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and ran third in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last season, and stakes-winning filly Ploverset (Street Boss), who have drawn barriers six and three respectively. Other notable entries include Stuart Webb’s unbeaten filly Crown Witness (Star Witness) who has drawn barrier 11 for jockey Ben Melham.

Weather Watch For Tulip And CatchyCo-trainer Ben Hayes has warned that the weather and track conditions will determine whether Catchy and Tulip will line up in the Saturday’s Quezette Stakes at Randwick. "Catchy will run if it's dry,” Hayes said. "We accepted with Tulip. If it's wet, she'll run. If it's not wet she will run next week. And if it is wet Catchy won't run and Tulip will run. It's a bit of a back-up. But it's looking like it's going to be dry. We're really happy with the way Catchy is going. She has grown. She's eating well and definitely looks like she has improved. I'm just really looking forward to her running. She looks like she's got plenty of ability and much more to give."

14 For The Vain StakesCrownBet have installed the Ciaron Maher-trained Jukebox (Snitzel) as the $4.20 favourite for Saturday’s Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield. Unbeaten in two career starts, the three-year-old colt has not been seen since taking out the Inglis 2YO Premier (RL, 1200m) in February and he has drawn barrier six for jockey Craig Williams. The James Cummings-trained Veranillo (Medaglia d’Oro), who won

the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1100m) at Randwick, will resume from barrier two, while the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Kobayashi (I Am Invincible) is rated a $5.50 chance and will start from barrier 14.

Price Sticks To Adelaide PlanMick Price has said he intends to stick to his original plan and run multiple Group One winner Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) in the SAJC Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday rather than the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. Lankan Rupee resumed by running second in the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on 6 August and Price had intended to run the gelding in the Group Two at Caulfield, but after the Bletchingly was brought back made him reconsider the plans. "I think it's better for the horse," Price said. "I don't want him to have a gut-buster over 1400 metres second up after 13 days, after such a long time off." Lankan Rupee will face 13 rivals and has drawn barrier one for jockey Craig Newitt.

Esperance Remains UnbeatenThe Godolphin-raced gelding Esperance (Bernardini) followed up his impressive debut victory at Echuca with another impressive win in the Sheamus Mills Bloodstock Handicap (1200m) at Sandown Lakeside yesterday. The gelding beat Indernile (Street Boss) by two lengths with just over a length back to back to Spirit Of Aquada (Bel Esprit) in third. "He's very exciting," said David Charles, Melbourne representative for Godolphin's Australian

trainer James Cummings. "He won impressively by eight lengths at Echuca and has stepped up to a Benchmark 64 in town impressively today but we'll let him come through this and then pick out a little race for him in the next four or five weeks."

Songlike Impresses At CanterburyThe Bjorn Baker-trained Songlike (Your Song) brought up the first win of her career when she took out the McGrath Estate Agents Maiden Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury yesterday. In what was the fourth start of her career, Songlike showed a good attitude to defeat Showtime (Snitzel) by a length with just a short head back to Faeger (Choisir) in third. “She is going the right way and I have a good opinion of her. I just have to think where we might go and we may even look after her and give her a bit of time. We will just see how she comes through first,” said Baker. “She had to do a bit of work today into the wind. She has always been a nice filly and it is good to see her win a city race.”

Treble For BakerSonglike’s victory in the first race at Canterbury was the first leg of a treble for trainer Bjorn Baker, with stablemates Irithea (Snitzel) and Lubiton (Snitzel) winning later on on the card. Irithea was successful in a Benchmark 72 (1200m), while Lubiton scored in a Benchmark 70 (1250m). "We'll have a bit of think about what we'll do with her. The best is yet to come. We may put her out for a break," Baker said of Irithea. "She's done really well. She's a well-bred filly, beautifully picked out by Darby Racing. I'm lucky to have her. She done that quite easy. With 150 to go I thought I've got this in the bag quite comfortably."

English To Trial At RandwickThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained English (Encosta De Lago) tuned up for her spring campaign, which will include a run in The Everest (1200m), with a 1000 metre gallop at Canterbury yesterday and now looks set to barrier trial at Randwick on Monday. The five-year-old mare won the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) in March before finishing second to

Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) two races later. "She's exactly where she needs to be at this stage of her preparation," Bott said. "She wasn't asked to do much early but she went through her gears nicely and was given a good hit out to the line. Just coming here today, mentally we saw how much she's matured.” English, who has the TAB slot for The Everest, will resume in the The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) at Randwick on 16 September.

Bowman Potential Rider For Chautauqua With Tommy Berry unable to ride multiple Group One winner Chautauqua this season due to commitments in Hong Kong, Hugh Bowman has emerged as the gelding's potential new partner, with the booking hinging on which path Winx (Street Cry) takes to the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). Bowman’s ride on The Everest bound sprinter will be determined on whether Winx runs in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on 14 October or if she stays at Randwick to contest the Craven Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at The Everest meeting. "The hard part of having a Hughie Bowman is that he's got a commitment to Winx and he's obviously going to go wherever Winx goes, so if Winx happens to come down for the Caulfield Stakes then that doesn't work for Chautauqua because The Everest is on the same weekend." part-owner Rupert Legh told Racing.com.

Double For LloydJockey Jeff Lloyd who missed the first four metropolitan meetings of the season with a double suspension, returned by riding a double at Doomben yesterday. Lloyd, who won the Brisbane Premiership last season, guided Sky Team (High Chaparral) to victory in the maiden plate (1650) and quickly followed up that win aboard Plucky Girl (Pluck) Class Three Fillies and mares plate (1350m).

Oliver Picks Up 14 Meeting BanChampion jockey Damien Oliver will miss the first Group One of the new season after being handed a 14 meeting suspension at Sandown Lakeside yesterday. Stewards charged Oliver

with shifting in onto Esperance (Bernardini) near the 900 metre mark which resulted in Secret Reward (Reward For Effort) being severely crowded and The Sword (Redoute’s Choice) being severely checked during the Sheamus Mills Bloodstock Handicap (1200m). Oliver's ban begins after Caulfield on Saturday and he can not return until 3 September, a day after the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) meeting at Caulfield.

Oliver Blasts WilliamsDespite pleading guilty to the charges, Damien Oliver told stewards he had been used by Craig Williams aboard Esperance, who won the race, and blasted his fellow jockeys actions. "It was a selfish act," Oliver said. “He's put two riders inside us in a dangerous position just for the sake of not being stuck three deep. You guys (stewards) aren't in a position to hear what goes on in the jockeys room, but I haven't had one jockey in the room say I wasn't stitched up. I've got no reason to put those guys in that situation in a race like this. Craig's call was late. If he had called earlier I could have done something sooner." Chief steward Terry Bailey said stewards took into consideration Oliver's guilty plea and the circumstances put forward regarding Williams. "But we can't get past that you were never clear of him," Bailey said.

Berry, Hyeronimus Suspended At CanterburyA careless riding suspension at Canterbury will not cost Tommy Berry any time out of the saddle with the ban falling during the time he relocates to Hong Kong. Berry was outed for seven meetings in his final race at the New South Wales track yesterday. Berry heads to Hong Kong on Sunday, the day the suspension begins, to take up a one-year contract with trainer John Moore and will be free to ride again on 3 September, the first race meeting of the new Hong Kong season. He pleaded guilty to shifting in aboard Quick Defence (First Defence) in the Benchmark 75 (1900m), impeding Josh Parr on Plymouth Road (Tavistock). Meanwhile, Adam Hyeronimus will miss a week's racing after pleading guilty to shifting out on the winner, Street Pursuit (Street Cry) in the same race.

New Zealand

No More Tears Ready For Foxbridge PlateTrainer Stephen Marsh is pleased with No More Tears (Darci Brahma) ahead of her tilt at the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. The mare finished second to Saracino (Per Incanto) in the Group Two last season and she tuned up for her return with a third in a 1000 metre Te Teko barrier trial earlier this month. “She’s going really well and her trial at Te Teko was very good,” Marsh said. “It’s a very good field, but with all the rain we’ve had the track will affect others more than us – she’ll cop it okay.” A field of 16 have accepted for the NZ$100,000 sprint, headed by multiple Group One winner Kawi (Savabeel).

Change Of Plan For Battle Time The likelihood of a testing track at Te Rapa this weekend has forced co-trainers Tim and Margaret Carter to rethink Battle Time’s (Battle Paint) early season programme. The entire was set to use the Foxbridge Plate as a stepping stone to the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) but will instead take a different route to the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) on 23 September. “The weather has been terrible and we didn’t want him having a gut-buster of a run first up so the Foxbridge was out and we’ve withdrawn him from the first leg at Hawke’s Bay,” Tim Carter said. “That’s going to be a top field and we’re taking a safer route. He’s got a big season ahead of him and it will probably be his last as he’s still a stallion.”

Smart Win For Sophie’s ChoicePromising filly Sophie’s Choice (Darci Brahma) opened her account at the seventh attempt with a convincing win at Ruakaka yesterday. The Stephen Marsh-trained three-year-old, whose peak juvenile performances included a fourth in the Phoenix Park 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m), beat Wandering Eye (Commands) by a length and a half over 1000 metres under jockey Danielle Johnson. “That was nice, she’s had a few unlucky runs so it’s good to get her confidence up,” Johnson said.

Marsh Stable Stars To TrialCambridge-based Marsh is also set to give barrier trials to some of his stable stars at Taupo on

Friday, with Group One winners Thee Auld Floozie (Mastercraftsman) and Sofia Rosa (Makfi) as well as Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) winner Chocante (Shocking) due to step out over 1100 metres. "My three are all coming up great and they will just be enjoying a trip away and a nice day out," Marsh said. "They won't be put under pressure." The two high-class heats at Taupo will also feature Group One winners Bonneval (Makfi), Gingernuts (Iffraaj), Jon Snow (Iffraaj), Lizzie L'Amour (Zabeel), La Luna Rossa (Written Tycoon), Rangipo (Stryker) and Summer Passage (Snitzel).

Asia

Blizzard And Lucky Year In Sprinters StakesHong Kong-trained pair Blizzard (Starcraft) and Lucky Year (Holy Roman Emperor) have been entered in the Sprinters Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) which is due to be held at Nakayama on 1 October. The Ricky Yiu-trained Blizzard has won eight of his 25 career starts, including the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (Gr 3, 1400m) at Sha Tin on New Year’s Day, while the Danny Shum-trained Lucky Year won the Sha Tin Vase (Gr 3, 1200m) when last sighted in May.

International

First For Dick TurpinThe Richard Hannon-trained Billesdon Bess (3 f ex Coplow by Manduro) surged home late to win the Upavon Fillies' Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Salisbury yesterday, in the process providing Dick Turpin (Arakan) with his first stakes winner. The progressive filly was briefly short of room approaching the final furlong but quickened up well once in the clear to beat High Hopes (Zamindar) by a length, with Rosental (Pivotal) a further half a length behind in third.

Nine For EpauletteThe Richard Hannon-trained Rogue (2 g ex Miskin Diamond by Diamond Green) made all the running to break his maiden at Salisbury yesterday, in the process providing Darley first season sire Epaulette (Commands) with his ninth winner. The colt found plenty once challenged inside the final furlong to beat Ragstone Road (Kodiac) by half a length under Ryan Moore, with The Great Dandini (Dandy Man) a further head

behind in third place. Epaulette will stand the Southern Hemisphere breeding season for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST) at Darley Kelvinside.

Red Cardinal Faces Kergorlay TestThe Andreas Wohler-trained Red Cardinal (Montjeu) will bid to continue his winning run in the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) at Deauville on Sunday. The Australian Bloodstock-raced gelding is following the same path as Protectionist (Monsun) who won the Group Two en route to his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) success in 2014. "We are very much looking forward just to seeing where he's at," Lovett told Racing.com. "It will be a much stronger field than he met at his last start (Belmont Gold Cup in the US) so it will just give us a better gauge as to where he's at.”

Rajasinghe To Miss Prix MornyRoyal Ascot winner Rajasinghe (Choisir) will miss the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) at Deauville on Sunday after he returned a dirty scope yesterday morning. The colt won the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Royal Meeting in June and ran third under a Group Two penalty in the July Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newmarket most recently. "Unfortunately, Rajasinghe scoped dirty this morning which rules him out of the Prix Morny which had been his main summer target,” trainer Richard Spencer told the Racing Post. "If he comes right he could run in the Group Two Gimcrack Stakes at York or beyond that the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury."

Eminent Earmarked As Stud ProspectThe Martyn Meade-trained Eminent (Frankel) looks to have assured his future as a stallion following his impressive win in the Prix Guillaume D’Ornano (Gr 2, 2000m) at Deauville on Tuesday. The colt is raced by prominent breeder Sir Peter Vela, the principal of New Zealand Bloodstock and Pencarrow Stud, and the well-bred son of Frankel (Galileo) could become his sire’s first son to stand at stud. "It's in the back of Sir Peter's mind," Pencarrow manager Leon Casey said. "The horse has pretty much made a strong stallion case even now in either the Southern or Northern Hemisphere. His pedigree is outstanding."

Finest City To Be Offered At F-T November SaleGrade One winner Finest City (City Zip) will be offered at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on 6 November and will be consigned by trainer Ian Steele Kruljac on behalf of owner Seltzer Thoroughbreds. Voted 2016 Eclipse champion female sprinter, Finest City won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) at Santa Anita and also won the Great Lady M Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f), setting a track record in the process. "Finest City has been a dream to care for," said Kruljac. "Her brilliance, durability, versatility and personality have given us a lifetime of memories. She has battled the best mares of her generation on any surface and at any distance." Classic Empire Back In TrainingThe Mark Casse-trained Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) is back in training at Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala as he is prepared for the Pennsylvania Derby (Gr 1, 9f). The multiple

Grade One-winning colt has not been seen since running second to Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music) in the Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) at Pimlico in May, after suffering with a foot abscess on his right foot. "He is back in Ocala, we went back to our roots and we're trying this again," Casse told Bloodhorse.com. "He trained great there this morning. He just was not doing as well as we would have liked up here in Saratoga. And we knew if there was any chance of us making the Pennsylvania Derby, we needed to make some kind of change similar to what we did for the Arkansas Derby.”

Goffs Sportsman's Catalogue Now OnlineThe catalogue for the 2017 Goffs Sportsman’s Sale is now available to view online. A total of 287 yearlings, who have been selected as likely early two-year-old types, have been catalogued for the sale which will be held on 28 September. Recent graduates of the sale include the Richard Fahey-trained Bengali Boys (Clodovil) who ran out a wide-margin winner

of the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint (5f) at Newbury last month. “We have reverted to the sale’s most successful one day format this year and have handpicked a high quality bunch of commercial yearlings and real two-year-old types,” Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said. Mustaaqeem Champion South African ColtThe Australian-bred and Shadwell-raced Mustaaqeem (Redoute’s Choice) was crowned South African champion two-year-old colt at the Equus Awards on Tuesday evening. The unbeaten Mike de Kock-trained son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) was purchased for $1,750,000 at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and won the S A Nursery (Gr 1, 1160m) by four lengths at his last start in May. Meanwhile, multiple Grade One-winning six-year-old Legal Eagle (Greys Inn) was named Horse of the Year for the second successive year as well as champion older male and champion miler.

Four-time Group One winner Our Ivanhowe (Soldier Hollow) will join the stallions roster at Haras Du Thenney in France next year.

The former Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained seven-year-old was retired at the end of last season and was last sighted taking out the Ranvet Stakes (registered as the Rawson Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) by three and a half lengths at Randwick in March.

“Today was the first time he has got his ground, the first time since coming to Australia there has been some rain around and he just loves it,” winning rider Kerrin McEvoy said after the Ranvet Stakes.

“They couldn’t quicken and he quickened up the last 500 metres and I went from six or

seven lengths off them to controlling the race and the horse did the rest.”

Originally trained by Wilhelm Giedt and Jean-Pierre Carvalho in Europe, Our Ivanhowe won the Grosser Preis von Baden (Gr 1, 2400m) and Grosser Preis von Bayern (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2014 before shipping to Australia the following year.

His other top level success came in the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in 2016, and Niccolo Riva of Haras Du Thenney told the Racing Post he was an exciting addition to the stud’s roster.

“We are very excited about the new arrival,” Riva said.

“He's been an exceptional racehorse, winning four Group Ones in two hemispheres between ten and 12 furlongs.

Our Ivanhowe Joins Haras Du Thenney Roster

“He's an impressive individual, provides an interesting outcross for most mares and should be of great interest for both Flat and jumps breeders.”

Our Ivanhowe is one of six foals out of the Group One-placed mare Indigo Girl (Sternkönig), herself a half-sister to the stakes-winning pair Irulan (Monsun) and Indian Breeze (Monsun), making him a half-brother to one winner.

This is also the family of Group Three winners Stormfly (Dark Angel) and Indian Pearl (Gulf Pearl) and Group Three placegetters Iolith (Monsun) and Ice Cool (Lateral).

Our Ivanhowe is in quarantine and is set to arrive in France next month, with a stud fee to be announced at a later date.

She showed signs of inexperience when hanging into the centre of the course a furlong out, but she knuckled down well in the closing stages to beat Juliet Capulet (Dark Angel) by a length, with the same distance back to Capla Temptress (Lope De Vega) in third.

The Ivawood Stakes (Listed, 7.5f) went the way of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Ballet Shoes (2 f Galileo - Emerald Ring by Johannesburg) at Tipperary on Friday evening.

The two-year-old filly moved into the lead around two furlongs out and quickened clear to beat the favourite Lethal Steps (Lethal Force)

by an impressive three and a quarter lengths with another length and three quarters back to Mattymolls Gaga (Dragon Pulse) in third.

The daughter of champion sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) could back up in the Debutante Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at the Curragh on Sunday.

The Charlie Appleby-trained and Godolphin-raced Mythical Magic (2 c Iffraaj - Mythie by Octagonal) won the Prix Francois Boutin (Listed, 1400m) at Deauville on Sunday.

The progressive colt set steady fractions on the front end under Jamie Spencer and found plenty once asked to stretch to beat Cascadian (New Approach) by three quarters of a length, with Salt Lake City (Holy Roman Emperor) a further three lengths adrift in third place.

Champion trainer Aidan O’Brien continued his domination of the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) when Sioux Nation (2 c Scat Daddy -

Dream The Blues by Oasis Dream) ran out a convincing winner of the €250,000 race at the Curragh on Sunday.

The colt, who won the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot at his previous start, travelled strongly into contention under Ryan Moore and was produced to challenge on the approach to the final furlong.

He showed a smart turn of foot to beat the previously undefeated Beckford (Bated Breath) by half a length, with stablemate Actress (Declaration Of War) a further length and a half behind in third.

After the race, O’Brien, who has saddled the winner of the Phoenix Stakes an incredible 16 times since 1998, suggested that the colt would be considered for a tilt at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 8f) at Del Mar later this year.

The progressive Tajaanus (2 f Arcano - Rayaheen by Nayef) made it back-to-back stakes victories when she posted an impressive victory to land the Sweet Solera Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket on Saturday.

The Al Shaqab-raced Al Wukair (3 c Dream Ahead - Macheera by Machiavellian) bounced back to form when taking the Prix Jacques

Le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) in determined fashion at Deauville on Sunday.

The Andre Fabre-trained colt had finished third in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket earlier this season and was beaten at odds-on on his return to action in the Prix Messidor (Gr 3, 1600m) at his previous start.

However, he travelled smoothly into the race under Frankie Dettori and quickened up well in the closing stages to lead close home, eventually prevailing by a short head from stablemate Inns Of Court (Invincible Spirit), with the Godolphin-raced Thunder Snow (Helmet) just a short neck further back in third.

Fabre said the colt was likely to be given a short break now before returning to England for a tilt at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot on British Champions Day in October.

The Sir Peter Vela-raced Eminent (3 c Frankel - You'll Be Mine by Kingmambo) made all the running under Ryan Moore to win the Prix Guillaume D’Ornano (Gr 2, 2000m) in impressive fashion at Deauville on Tuesday.

The colt, who is trained at Newmarket by Martyn Meade, quickened clear in the closing stages to beat fellow British raider Salouen (Canford Cliffs) by three lengths, with Avilius (Pivotal) a further length and three quarters behind in third.

The odds-on favourite and dual Group One-winning favourite Brametot (Rajsaman) missed the break badly and could never land a blow in fifth, and Meade suggested after the race that Eminent would be trained towards the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) on 1 October.

The Mark Johnston-trained Frankuus (3 c Frankel - Dookus by Linamix) put an impressive front-running display to win the Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2.5f) at Haydock on Saturday.

The smart colt set steady fractions on the front end under veteran jockey Joe Fanning and began to stack his rivals up on the approach to the home straight.

He kicked clear approaching the final two furlongs and never looked like being caught, with Mount Logan (New Approach) three quarters of a length away in second and the previously unbeaten Laraaib (Pivotal) a further five lengths adrift in third.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Spanish Steps (3 c Galileo - Turbulent Descent by Congrats) narrowly defeated stablemate Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) in the Ballyroan Stakes (Gr 3,

1m4f) at Leopardstown on Thursday evening. The three-year-old colt had finished last

in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) at his previous start but bounced back to form under Seamie Heffernan, who sent the colt into the lead after two furlongs.

He ran on gamely in the home straight to win by half a length, with another two and a half lengths back to Stellar Mass (Sea The Stars) in third place.

The progressive and well-bred God Given (3 f Nathaniel - Ever Rigg by Dubai Destination) ran out a convincing winner of the Prix Minerve (Gr 3, 2500m) at Deauville on Sunday.

The Luca Cumani-trained filly, who is a half-sister to multiple Group One winner Postponed (Dubawi), took out the Aphrodite Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) in clearcut fashion at Newmarket last month, and she was sent straight into the lead by jockey Jamie Spencer.

She found plenty for pressure once challenged in the straight and ran on strongly to beat Calayana (Sinndar) by a length and three quarters, with Lady Montdore (Medaglia d’Oro) a further neck away in third.

The classy four-year-old Dschingis Secret (4 c Soldier Hollow - Divya by Platini) ran out a decisive winner of the Grosser Preis von Berlin (Gr

1, 2400m) at Hoppegarten in Germany on Sunday afternoon.

The four-year-old had won twice previously at Group Two level and was ridden with confidence just off the pace by jockey Adrie de Vries, who began to creep into contention approaching the final 400 metres.

He quickened up well in the closing stages to run down the Charlie Appleby-trained Group One winner Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) by a length, with fellow Godolphin challenger Racing History (Pivotal) a further three and a half lengths adrift in third place.

The victory of Dschinghis Secret continued the stellar season for trainer Markus Klug, who trains at Röttgen to the south of Cologne, who also saddled Windstoss (Shirocco) to win the Deutsches Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) last month.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Washington DC (4 c Zoffany - How’s She Cuttin’ by Shinko Forest) led in the final strides to win the Phoenix

Sprint Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the Curragh on Sunday.

The four-year-old colt was held up off the pace by Ryan Moore and delivered with a perfectly timed run to beat stablemate Cougar Mountain (Fastnet Rock) by half a length, with the same distance back to the admirable nine-year-old Gordon Lord Byron (Byron) in third place.

Washington DC could be turned out for the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York next Friday, though he also holds an entry in the Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Haydock on 9 September.

Last year’s European champion three-year-old Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) was well beaten on his belated return to action in the Prix Gontaut-Biron (Gr 3, 2000m) at Deauville on Tuesday, as the British raider First Sitting (5 g Dansili - Aspiring Diva by Distant View) scored decisively.

The Chris Wall-trained gelding shot clear approaching the 200 metres and held on well under Gerald Mosse despite drifting over to the far rail, beating Garlingari (Linngari) by three quarters of a length with Zafiro (Sageburg) a further two lengths behind in third.

Hey Doc (Duporth) [117], a dual Group One winning colt last season, rated just two pounds below his peak with an

impressive first up victory in Saturday’s Aurie’s Star Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington.

The now four-year-old was having his first start since May and sprinted quickly off a slow early tempo to take a narrow but very smart win. Hey Doc is now expected to advance clearly beyond his 119 master rating this preparation.

Hey Doc has built an impressive record under trainer Tony McEvoy with seven wins from 15 starts, his main achievements to date being his victories in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) where he rated 119 in both races.

His 117-rated win on Saturday compares more than favourably to past winners of the Aurie’s Star Handicap being seven pounds superior to last year’s winner Sooboog (Snitzel) [110].

And that 110 Timeform figure sits right in line with recent historical standards for the Aurie's Star Handicap, matching the 2015 winner Shiraz (Zariz) [110] and sitting just behind good recent winners Tiger Tees (Dubawi) [113] and Temple Of Boom (Piccolo) [113].

Ridden well by Luke Currie, Hey Doc was part of the leading group, going at a steady pace before he accelerated approaching the 200 metres.

Hey Doc got to a clear lead at the 50 metres and then fought on gamely to win by a short head from the in-form Cannyescent (Canny Lad) [106] with Grande Rosso (Written Tycoon) [109] a half-length away in third.

Connections later advised that they are now likely to chase another Group One victory for Hey Doc with the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September his immediate mission.

At the Rosehill meeting on Saturday, the Gerald Ryan-trained colt Menari (Snitzel) [120] returned with a most impressive win in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m).

Rated 110p by Timeform following his juvenile campaign, Menari took a big step

forward returning a new career peak figure of 120p and now sits clearly at the top of the new season Timeform three-year-old table.

In addition, Menari is comfortably the highest rated winner of The Rosebud, his 120p win being 15 pounds above the past five year’s average winning rating of 105 - the top-rated horse in that period being Eurozone (Northern Meteor) [106] in 2013.

Ridden by Josh Parr, Menari settled just worse than midfield, with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) [103] setting a decent tempo out in front.

Pulled the widest runner on straightening, Menari loomed ominously before quickly taking over passing the 200 metres, then drawing clear to defeat Siege Of Quebec by a length and a quarter with Trekking (Street Cry) [103) a length away in third.

Menari ran a quick 1:03.20 for the 1100 metre journey and he also carried 60.5 kilograms, conceding six kilograms to Siege Of Quebec and four kilograms to Trekking, those factors boosting his impressive final 120p rating.

A very good winner on debut at Randwick in January, Menari went on to finish a luckless second behind Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) [107p] in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) later that month before wet tracks marred the remainder of his juvenile campaign.

A game performance saw Menari finish fourth on protest (third past the post) behind She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) [119] in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in March, which resulted in earning himself 60.5 kilograms for his return on Saturday.

As a probable result of the revised spring programming, Menari resumed early in the season and his performance in The Rosebud marginally bettered that of Star Turn (Star Witness) [116+] who won the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on the same weekend last year.

Star Turn went on to be narrowly beaten in The Run to the Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) before easily disposing of his elder rivals in the Schillaci Stakes [Gr 2, 1100m] at Caulfield taking his peak Timeform rating of 124.

Trainer Gerald Ryan is now left with the interesting decision as to where he heads with Menari.

Following his victory, Ryan indicated he would like Menari to contest The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on 14 October which comes three weeks after the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill on 23 September.

Perhaps Menari will contest both races but the colt certainly creates plenty of interest, whichever path connections elect to follow with the current top-rated three-year-old colt this season.

OverviewGroup One winner Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock) will join the Gold

Front and Racing roster in Western Australia for the 2017 breeding season.

Trained by Leon and Troy Corstens, Awesome Rock retired a winner of four races, including the Emirates Stakes (registered as LKS Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m), and amassed $2,038,720 in career prize money.

After breaking his maiden on his second start, Awesome Rock strung together good performances in some high-quality stakes races, including running second to Zululand (Fastnet Rock) in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and third in the H D F McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

After running fourth in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in his second start as a three-year-old, he finished third in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) in September and occupied that same position in the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) the following May, before finishing fourth in the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) in June.

Awesome Rock tasted his first success at stakes level in the spring of 2015, when taking out the Melbourne Cup Day Plate (Listed, 1800m) in November before finishing first past the post in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in March, but the race was later handed to runner-up Preferment (Zabeel) in the stewards’ room.

He was kept in training as a five-year-old and took out the Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley second up, beating subsequent Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Jameka (Myboycharlie) in the process.

After finishing fifth in three races at Group One level, he eventually made his breakthrough at the highest level, when beating Group One winner Hauraki (Reset) in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington last November.

Bred by Alan and Sue Olive, Awesome Rock (5 h Fastnet Rock - Awesome Planet by Giant’s Causeway) was purchased by Spice Thoroughbreds for $575,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2013.

The six-year-old horse is out of Awesome Planet (Giant’s Causeway), the winner of the 2009 Doomben Roses (Gr 3, 2000m) who also ran third in the 2008 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Further back he is from the same family as Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Dr Devious (Ahonoora).

Awesome Rock will stand at Gold Front Breeding and Racing for an introductory fee of $8,000 (inc GST).

Analysis: Promising Bjorn Baker-trained filly Songlike followed placings in two of her first three starts with a really good win here. She showed pace to lead and then travelled well, grabbed a break shortly after turning for home and went on to score quite comfortably. She looks a filly with a good future. The smart Team Hawkes-trained colt Showtime was quickly away, settled outside the leader, was under riding at the home turn but kept fighting on well under his top weight (60kg) for a good second while Faeger was third on the rails and made up several lengths over the closing stages to take the minor placing in a promising effort.

Analysis: Mark Newnham-trained colt Super Ex followed his win in a Kembla Grange maiden (1200m) on 5 August at his second start with a good win here. He was a bit slow to move but soon recovered from his inside barrier (1) to settle in second place behind the leader (Albumin). He moved outside that runner at the 700m, dashed clear at the 200m and then went on to score comfortably.

Analysis: Former New Zealand-trained gelding Up ‘N’ Rolling looks the makings of a promising stayer. Analysis: Bjorn Baker-trained mare Irithea is now unbeaten in three runs this preparation, following wins in a Newcastle maiden (1200m) on 15 July and a win in a Class Two (1200m) at Gosford on 29 July with a nice win, stepping up in class here.
