Beadman said yesterday that he was pleased with his runner’s draw for the $650,000 feature, adding that the six-year-old son of Dynaformer (Roberto) has been in good form since securing an eighth career stakes success at the Gold Coast earlier this month.

“Everything says that he’s held his form and he’s come up with a perfect barrier,” Beadman said.

“He’s worked well and retained his fitness since winning at the Gold Coast. He galloped very nicely at the Gold Coast this week.

“If he can repeat what he’s done at his last three (starts) it should put him into the race. The great thing is that he gives 100 per cent every run, and he still seems to have some freshness in his legs.

“He’s only had a fairly light preparation and with James Doyle to ride him I can’t see any reason why he won’t run very well.”

The build up to the Doomben Cup has been far less straightforward for Darren Weir, with a lack of flights to Brisbane meaning that only two of his three accepted runners have so far made it to Queensland.

Articus (Areion) ($4.80) and Star Exhibit (Statue Of Liberty) ($11), drawn in barriers eight and four respectively, arrived yesterday after Qantas contacted Weir late on Monday evening to tell him that that only two of the three horses booked on the flight could travel, with Amelie’s Star (Testa Rossa) missing out.

"It's unfortunate as we had three horses booked on to fly out but we got the late phone call to say only two could go,” Weir told Racing.com.

"Unfortunately one had to miss out and we had to make a decision. It put our stable in a really tricky position because obviously the three horses are all in the Doomben Cup and only two could go, one had to miss out.”

Premier Victorian trainer Weir, who is bidding to saddle a ninth Group One winner of the season, made the decision to send Articus and Star Exhibit, with Amelie’s Star ($13) considered the best traveller of the trio.

"Articus and Star Exhibit are not the best travellers and they probably needed some sedation to help them travel, whereas Amelie's Star is quite a good traveller,” Weir said.

"Obviously Articus is also a stallion and Star Exhibit is a gelding, so unfortunately Amelie's Star missed out.

"It is unfortunate for her owners. The other two got up there safe and well."(The airline have) assured me that Amelie's Star and my other two

(Doomben) runners (Kenedna and Ulmann) will get up there tonight."Meanwhile, Canberra trainer Nick Olive is hopeful of another good

run from the back-to-form Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt) ($9) in the Doomben Cup.

The four-year-old mare, who has been steadily regaining confidence since a heavy mid-race fall in last season’s ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), finished down the field at her first two starts this preparation on her return from a ten month lay off.

However, she finished a close third in the Neville Sellwood Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Rosehill third up before taking out the Tails Quality (Listed, 1600m) by half a length at Doomben on 22 April.

The Group One winner, who has drawn barrier 14 for Kathy O’Hara, was narrowly denied by It’s Somewhat in the A D Hollindale Stakes at her last start, and Olive said he is looking forward to having another crack at the pre-post favourite over the longer 2000 metre trip this weekend.

It’s Somewhat Primed For Doomben Cup

“It took a year to get over her fall and then she copped a clod in her eye which needed to be treated aggressively by inserting a tube in it,” Oliver said.

“It was touch and go for a while and she almost lost her sight which would have finished her career.

“It’s Somewhat is the one to beat but I’m looking forward to taking him on over 2000 metres.”

Olive added that the mare could also take in the P J O’Shea Stakes (Gr 2, 2200m) at Eagle Farm on 3 June before heading for a spell, with a tilt at either the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) or Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in the spring on her long-term agenda.

“She’s never been to Melbourne but she has worked well their way of going (left-handed) and is a natural on the other leg,” Olive said.

“If Winx wasn’t headed for the Cox Plate we’d go that way with her but we won’t be taking Winx on and we’ll go after the Caulfield Cup.”

New Zealand raider Benzini (Tale Of The Cat) ($26) is set to return to Queensland a little over 11 months on from his victory in last season’s Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) at Eagle Farm, the biggest win of his career to date.

Trained at Hunterville on the North Island by Adrian and Harry Bull, the seven-year-old will break from barrier three for jockey Kelly McCulloch, who replaces her injured sister Rosie Myers in the saddle for Saturday’s Doomben Cup.

"I am over (in Queensland) on a what is really a working holiday," McCulloch said.

"I came over to be based at the Sunshine Coast and help with three horses. One has gone home already but hopefully the other two are going to race well and I can pick up some other rides."

Benzini ran sixth in the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) at Sha Tin in December and has finished placed in the New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Canterbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) in his two runs since then.

McCulloch rode the gelding to finish second in a 1200 metre barrier trial at Deagan on 9 May, and she said that his preparation had gone smoothly to date.

"I rode him in a barrier trial and it was a good effort to finish second behind what I am told is a smart horse (Perfect Dare)," McCulloch said.

"As long as we don't get a lot of rain I would expect him to race well on Saturday. He gets through wet tracks but he doesn't want it too heavy.

"He is a seasoned traveller now and nothing much seems to worry him."Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller is set to run three horses in the

Doomben Cup, with Vanbrugh (Encosta De Lago) ($21), McCreery (Big Bad Bob) ($17) and Preferment (Zabeel) ($17) drawing barriers 12, 15 and 17 respectively.

The Kris Lees-trained Group Two winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) ($9), a luckless sixth in the A D Hollindale Stakes at his last start, has drawn the outside barrier 18, while the highest-rated Brisbane-trained runner Cylinder Beach (Showcasing) ($26), prepared at Eagle Farm by Desleigh Forster, has drawn barrier 13.

Dawn Wall In 12 For RosesDawn Wall (Fastnet Rock) heads the 12 acceptors for The Magic Millions Roses (registered as The Roses) (Gr 2, 2000m) at Doomben on Saturday and she has drawn barrier 12 for jockey Hugh Bowman. The Chris Waller-trained filly will be looking to back up her last start win in the Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed, 1800m) on 6 May, and she will likely be joined by stablemates Invincibella (I Am Invincible) and Oklahoma Girl (Fastnet Rock), who have drawn barriers two and 13 respectively. Trainer Darren Weir looks set to saddle Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australian Oaks) (Gr 1, 2010m) runner-up Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt), who has drawn barrier four for John Allen.

Full Field Of 16 For BRC SprintThe Jamie Richards and Stephen Autridge-trained Splurge (Savabeel) will look to secure a win at his first Australian start when he faces 15 rivals in Saturday’s BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben. The four-year-old has won seven of his last nine starts, including the Darley Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie on 4 March, and he will be ridden from barrier nine by Opie Bosson. Other notable acceptors include the Darren

Beadman-trained Federal (Medaglia d'Oro), who has drawn barrier ten, while the Darren Weir-trained Ulmann (Sebring) and the Mick Bell-trained Jungle Edge (Dubawi), have drawn barriers two and 12 respectively. Click here to see the Doomben acceptances.

Savvy Dreams Primed For MorphettvilleCo-trainer Grant Cullen will be hoping Savvy Dreams (Savabeel) will have a change of luck, when she lines up in the SA Fillies Classic (Gr 3, 2500m) at Morphettville on Saturday. The three-year-old filly, who was last seen running fourth from a wide gate in the SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), was a late scratching in the Australaisain Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) after flipping over at the start, but Cullen believes she is in prime condition ahead of the race. "I can't fault her condition," said Cullen, who trains in partnership with Guy Lowry. "If there were any doubts at all she wouldn't be running, but she's 100 per cent and hopefully our luck changes." She will face 15 rivals and has drawn barrier six for Paul Gatt.

High Church In SixThe Darren Weir trained High Church (High Chaparral) will face 13 rivals when he takes his chance in the Port Adelaide Cup (Listed, 2500m) at Morphettville on Saturday. The

six-year-old gelding, who was most recently seen winning the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m), is the $2.30 favourite with CrownBet and will race from barrier six with Damian Lane on board. On the next line of betting is the Tony McEvoy-trained Time To Test (Testa Rossa), who has drawn barrier 13 for jockey Damien Thornton and is rated a $4.20 chance. While last start Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 2030m) winner Waging War (Rebel Raider), has drawn 12 with Clare Lindop booked to take the ride.

Field Of Ten For Lee StakesA total of ten runners have accepted for Saturday’s R A Lee Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Morphettville, with the field headed by the Darren Weir-trained Burning Front (Primus), who will be looking to follow-up his last start victory in the VOBIS Gold Mile (1600m) at Caulfield on 22 April. Burning Front has drawn barrier eight for jockey Brad Rawiller, while the Robert Smerdon-trained Hooked (Casino Prince), who won the Victoria Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield at his last start, has drawn barrier three, while co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas accepted with Royal Rumble (New Approach), who will be looking to win his first Group race from barrier seven. Little Engine Primed For RamsdenTrainer Danny O’Brien is confident of a good run from De Little Engine (Encosta De Lago) in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 3200m) at Flemington on Saturday, having finished third in the race 12 months ago. The six-year-old gelding, who broke a 16 race losing streak when he won the Vintage Crop Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on 6 May, has drawn barrier five for Daniel Moor. "He ran very well last year with a big weight and he possibly goes into the race in better form this year coming off a really good win two weeks ago," O'Brien said. "He's on his favourite track and certainly that sort of distance range holds no fears for him. We're expecting him to run really well."

Weir Confident Renew CanRun WellThe Darren Weir-trained Renew (Dansili) will temporarily revert back to the flat when he lines up in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes at

Flemington on Saturday, as Weir prepares the seven-year-old for a tilt in the Australian Hurdle (3400m) at Sandown on 27 May. Renew has won his last three starts over hurdles and Weir is hopeful he can run well. "The Andrew Ramsden fits in really well ... I'm looking forward to running him in it," Weir told Racing.com. "I just think he's in such good form and he's so fit, and it's a two-mile race the Andrew Ramsden, so it really suits a horse that is as fit as him. Whether he'll win it or not, I'm not sure, but I'm sure he'll run well, and then he's had a good hit-out for the Australian Hurdle the next weekend at Sandown.”

Spanner Heads To FlemingtonTrainer Archie Alexander will be hoping Spanner Head (Helmet) can run well in the Saturday's Winx Hall of Fame Trophy (1600m), having scratched the filly from last Saturday’s Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1600m) after she drew a wide barrier. The filly was last seen running second to subsequent Group One winner Egg Tart (Sebring) over 1600 metres

at Flemington on 25 April and Alexander is confident she can run well on Saturday. "She worked very well yesterday and we couldn't fault her,” said Alexander. "She's going as good as she ever has and likes Flemington having raced twice there for two seconds in good company."

Atkins For SambroTrainer Chris Waller will look to aim talented colt Sambro (Fastnet Rock) at the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June after his impressive maiden victory at Warwick Farm yesterday. A $420,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year, Sambro was having the fourth start of his career and he beat Icon Of Dubai (High Chaparral) by a length and three quarters. "You pay a bit of money for some of these colts so it's good to see them firing," Waller said. "He has ability, it's just been a matter of putting it all together. He's done a few little things wrong in his earlier races but I think the writing was on the wall last start that he was certainly ready to win."

Queensland Options For PanoramaMount Panorama (Sebring) broke his maiden at the 13th attempt over 1200 metres at the Gold Coast yesterday, and trainer Gary Moore will look to run the gelding in the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 27 May and the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) on 10 June. The three-year-old beat Witness (Real Saga) by a length and three quarters. "He will have a freshen up and then head to the Fred Best Stakes and the Queensland Guineas," Moore said. Mount Panorama was purchased by Hawkes Racing for $140,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

New Tipperary SpelledTrainer Joe Pride has decided to send New Tipperary (High Chaparral) to the spelling paddock. The four-year-old won three of his four starts last preparation and has run five times his preparation, with his best performance coming when running a close second behind It’s Somewhat (Dynaformer) in the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill on 11 March. Pride will now give him a break and he will be brought back for a spring preparation.

TBA Welcome Government Funds For ResearchSpeaking at an announcement to confirm the approval of government funds for an industry led research and development levy, Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has said the government is committed to supporting the thoroughbred breeding industry. Under the levy, which was included in last week’s budget and will be in place in the new financial year, breeders will pay $10 per mare and $10 per stallion return. This will be put into a fund for research and development with the federal government then matching every industry dollar. It is expected this could lead to some $1,000,000 being spent each year on research that benefits the thoroughbred breeding industry.

Germaine Ban ReducedDespite having a month shaved off his three-month suspension by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board yesterday, apprentice jockey Trent Germaine has still not ruled out taking his case to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). The jockey was suspended by Racing Victoria stewards for failing to provide a urine sample at Warrnambool on 3

May. In yesterday’s appeal, stewards argued that the original three-month penalty was reflective of the serious nature of the charge, but Peter Jurkovsky, acting as representative for Germaine, argued the circumstances of the case did not warrant such a harsh penalty. Germaine, whose reduced two-month suspension expires on 3 July, has 28 days to lodge an appeal with VCAT.

Heather Appointed Sun Stud ManagerJoe Heather has been appointed as the manager for Sun Stud’s Queensland branch, it was announced yesterday. Heather has extensive experience in the industry, spending five years at Woodlands Stud, before becoming broodmare manager at Glenlogan Park, and was part of the nominations team at Patinack Farm. Heather joins Sun Stud having spent four years as a manager of a private farm in Queensland. “I have been involved in every aspect of the industry and had the good fortune to deal with many of Queensland’s breeders, both as clients and friends,” Joe enthused. “I’m very happy to be joining the team at Sun Stud and it’s a great time to be coming on board.”

Harris Rides Flat Winner At RuakakaJockey Tory Harris launched his comeback to flat riding by guiding the Mark Forbes-trained Smart Bronson (Smart Missile) to victory over 1200 metres at Ruakaka on Wednesday. The jockey has been plagued by weight issues and said he is making an effort to further his career. “I actually had my first winner here a few years ago so I don’t mind coming back,” Harris said. “Hopefully I can start getting some more rides now.”

Love Affair Sent For A SpellCo-trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have also sent talented filly Love Affair (Savabeel) for a spell. The three-year-old filly has won three of her four career starts and was planned to have her first stakes start in the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) last weekend, before the meeting was abandoned. “We’ve decided to turn her out,” Forsman told www.theinformant.co.nz. “She wasn’t going to run last Saturday anyway once it became a heavy track. It’s likely to be wet again on Sunday, so we decided that now’s a good time to give her a bit of a break for the winter before we start thinking about the spring with her.”

Spell For Odeon Talented three-year-old Odeon (Zacinto) had been sent for a spell. The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Odeon enjoyed a successful stint in Australia, finishing runner up in the Port Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1800m) before winning over 2000 metres at Caulfield, and was most recently seen running third to Volatile Mix (Pentire) in the SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on 13 May.

Bombard Breaks MaidenThe Stephen McKee-trained Bombard (Dalghar) made all the running to break his maiden over 1000 metres at Ruakaka yesterday. The two-year-old, who was having his fifth start of his career, beat Malambo (Duelled) by two and half lengths with another two lengths back to Lisdoonvarna (Super Easy) in third. “I was a bit worried about the wide draw, but he’s shown a bit of early speed in his previous

races and I told Sam (Spratt, jockey) to try to put pressure on the rest of them,” said Trevor McKee, representing his son Stephen. “Having that raceday experience before today really helped him, even though he was first-up for three or four months. He had a couple of good performances against the best two-year-olds at Ellerslie earlier on.”

Field Of 14 For Macau DerbyA total of 14 runners have been declared for the Macau Derby (MAC Gr 1, 1800m) at Taipa on 20 May with the field headed by River Treasure (Savabeel), who was most recently seen winning the Macau Guineas (MAC Gr 2, 1500m). The gelding will race from barrier four and is set to face Californiatreasure (Onemorenomore) and Eclair Journey (Guillotine), who followed him home in the Macau Guineas, and they have drawn barriers three and seven respectively. Meanwhile jockey Neil Callan will ride Same Beauty (Showcasing), who will race from barrier 12, while two-time Australian winner Wichita Linesman (Danehill Express), who was last seen winning the Four-Year-Old Prelude (Listed, 1500m), has drawn barrier 13. Romantic Touch Draws Inside BarrierThe Tony Cruz-trained Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor) has drawn barrier one in the Macau Hong Kong Trophy (MAC Gr 1, 1500m) at Taipa racecourse on 20 May, with Zac Purton booked to take the ride. The six-year-old gelding won the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in 2013, but has not won since November 2015. He will face six rivals, including fellow Hong Kong raider Marvel Hero (Lord Shanakill), who has drawn barrier six for jockey Joao Moreira, and The Alfonso (Magnus), who finished second in the race last year and has drawn barrier three for Luis Corrales. Duke Of York Stakes To TasleetTasleet (4 c Showcasing - Bird Key by Cadeaux Genereux) caused a minor shock in the Duke Of York Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York yesterday. The colt, who won last year’s Greenham Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) in a light three-year-old campaign, travelled strongly in behind the leaders under Jim Crowley. He was angled out from behind runners to deliver his challenge a furlong out, and he quickened clear in taking style on rain-softened ground, beating Magical Memory (Zebedee) by two and a half lengths, with Comicas (Distorted Humor) a further length and a half behind in third place. The favourite Brando (Pivotal) weakened quickly at the two-furlong marker and finished last.

118 For DansiliThe promising filly Shutter Speed (3 f ex Photographic by Oasis Dream) preserved her unbeaten record in the Musidora Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2.5f) at York yesterday to provide Dansili (Danehill) with his 118th stakes winner. The John Gosden-trained three-year-old travelled smoothly in third place under Frankie Dettori and she galloped home strongly in the closing stages to see off Vintage Folly (Makfi) by a length and three quarters, with Serenada (Azamour) a further length behind in third. The Musidora Stakes is a recognised Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) trial, though connections of Shutter Speed are favouring a tilt at the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) at Chantilly on 18 June instead. Dansili stands for a fee of £65,000 at Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket.

Jack Hobbs Entered For Coronation Cup The John Gosden-trained Jack Hobbs (Halling) features among 21 confirmations for the Coronation Cup (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom on 2 June. The five-year-old entire, who won the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) in 2015, made an

impressive return to action when a comfortable winner of the Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 2400m) at Meydan in March. Aidan O’Brien has seven runners still engaged, including dual Group One-winning filly Seventh Heaven (Galileo) and multiple Group / Grade One winner Highland Reel (Galileo). Other notable confirmations include Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) winner Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) and British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Journey (Dubawi).

My Dream Boat To Step Up In TripThe Clive Cox-trained My Dream Boat (Lord Shanakill) is set to tackle a mile and a half for the first time in the Al Rayyan Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Newbury on Saturday. The five-year-old, who won the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) on soft ground at Royal Ascot last season, finished third behind Ulysses (Galileo) in the Gordon Richards Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) at Sandown first up last month. "The plan is for My Dream Boat to go to Newbury on Saturday,” owner Paul and Clare Rooney’s racing manager Jason Maguire said. "He ran well at Sandown the other day and was staying on nicely at the finish. He should come on a bit for the run. I am looking forward to stepping him up to a mile and a half.”

Lady Aurelia Works At KeenelandGroup One winner Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) worked over half a mile at Keeneland on Tuesday as the Wesley Ward-trained three-year-old filly is prepared for her run in the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal Ascot. The filly, who won the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Ascot and the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) at Deauville last season, made her seasonal reappearance last month when she won the Giant’s Causeway Stakes (Listed, 5.5f) at Keeneland on 15 April. Also out on the track was Lady Aurelia’s Group One winning stablemate Undrafted (Purim), who is being aimed at the Wokingham Stakes (6f) at Royal Ascot.

It has been announced this morning that Group Three-winning juvenile Defcon (Choisir) will stand at Eureka Stud this year for a fee of $8,800 (inc GST).

"We really like his profile to make a sire," said Eureka Stud's Scott McAlpine. "Defcon had really high class 2yo ability and retired with the speed, natural talent and a pedigree to make an important impact as a stallion."

A $340,000 purchase by James Harron Bloodstock at the 2015 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Defcon finished second on debut in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill in January 2016. He then occupied that same position in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) before winning the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last March.

Resuming from a spell, Defcon won the HDF McNeil stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last August and would then finish unplaced in three further starts this season.

He retires the winner of two of his eight starts and was placed second twice for earnings of $368,250 and co-trainer Peter Snowden commented: “in terms of natural ability, Defcon was up there with the very best two-year-olds we had. He had real talent.”

Defcon is out of the six-time winner Nuclear Force (Encosta De Lago) who is a half-sister

to three winners being out of the dual winner Nuclear Dance (Geiger Counter). His third dam is Church Social (Noalcoholic), a half-sister to the dual Group One-winning filly Rom’s Stiletto (Sharp Edge).

“Our ownership group have elected to retain the majority of Defcon and stand him at one of Queensland's pre-eminent studs in Eureka," said James Harron. "I know firsthand how much natural ability this horse had as a juvenile and we will be getting right behind him in the next phase of his career."

Five-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winning owner Lloyd Williams was one of 11 new inductees inaugurated into the

Australian Racing Hall of Fame yesterday. One of the most successful owners of the

modern era in Australian racing, Williams has also seen his colours carried to victory in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and both the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and AJC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).

Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse, herself inducted into the Hall Of Fame in 2007, said that Lloyd was a deserving of his place on Australian racing’s roll of honour.

“Lloyd Williams is an outstanding person within the racing world. He has given so much to racing over so many years,” Waterhouse said.

“He is unique in racing as he has been

a major owner for five decades. His five Melbourne Cups, as an owner, is matchless and will never be beaten.

“Lloyd is racing’s greatest blessing and asset.”

The Chris Waller-trained champion mare Winx (Street Cry) was also inaugurated in the the Hall Of Fame yesterday.

The five-year-old, who took out the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick last month to register a 17th consecutive victory, was crowned the world’s best turf horse at a Longines-sponsored ceremony in London in January.

Greg Carpenter, the chairman of the Australian Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, said that dual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Winx had captured the imagination of the public.

“Winx has captured the imagination of racing fans across the globe and is undisputedly the best mare in the world,” Carpenter said.

Winx joins past Melbourne Cup winners Archer (William Tell), Light Fingers (Le Filou) and Saintly (Sky Chase) as the four horses inducted into this year’s Hall Of Fame.

“It is only fitting that (Winx) is inducted this year, joining other equine inductees including

two-time Melbourne Cup winner Archer, 1965 Melbourne Cup winner Light Fingers and 1996 Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate winner Saintly, trained by the Cup’s King, the late Bart Cummings," Carpenter said.

Former jockey John Miller, who rode legendary stayer Galilee (Alcimedes) to a series of big-race victories in the mid-1960’s, including the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), Melbourne Cup, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Sydney Cup, has also been inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

Victorian-era jockey Tommy Corrigan has also been inducted, alongside former trainers Brian Courtney and Des Judd, while Edward Spencer Bell and the Lee-Steere family have also been inducted.

“I would like to congratulate this year’s inductees and thank them for their contributions to our great sport,” Carpenter said.

All inductees will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame at a gala ceremony on Friday at ZINC in Federation Square in Melbourne.

Each of the Hall of Fame inductees will be celebrated across the country at this weekend’s feature race meetings at Flemington, Rosehill, Doomben, Belmont Park and Morphettville.

Two-year-olds

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Actress (2 f ex Nasty Storm by Gulch) broke her maiden over five furlongs at the Curragh on Sunday to provide first season sire Declaration Of War (War Front) with his second winner.

The filly, one of seven named foals out of the dual Grade Two winner Nasty Storm (Gulch), beat Yolo Star (Society Rock) by three quarters of a length, with the same distance back to It Could Be Love (War Front), a stablemate of the winner, in third.

The Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot in June, one of few races at the Royal meeting to have so far eluded champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, could now be on the agenda for Actress.

Three-year-olds

The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Brametot (3 c ex Morning Light by Law Society) led in the last stride to win the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m), commonly referred to as the French 2,000 Guineas, at Deauville on Sunday, in the process giving his Haras De La Cauviniere-based sire Rajsaman (Linamix) his first Group One winner.

The Al Shaqab-raced colt settled in midfield in the early stages under Cristian Demuro, and he was produced to mount his challenge at the 300 metres.

Le Brivido (Siyouni) cruised into the lead approaching the 200 metres and looked sure to continue Andre Fabre’s excellent start to the season, but Brametot kept on strongly to run down that rival on the line to win by a short-head, with British raider Rivet (Fastnet Rock) a further three lengths adrift in third.

The Sun Bloodstock-raced favourite National Defense (Invincible Spirit), who won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1600m) last season, was too keen in the early stages and finished tailed off.

The victory provided Rouget, last year’s French champion trainer, with some welcome respite after a difficult start to the season, with one of his three stables in Pau struck down by a serious virus.

The previous day at Deauville, the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) went the way of Fabrice Chappet-trained outsider Precieuse (3 f ex Zut Alors by Pivotal), who also provided Tamayuz (Nayef) with his second Group One winner.

The filly, who returned a 28/1 chance and had finished second in the Prix Sigy (Gr 3, 1200m) at Chantilly at her previous start, raced in midfield in the early stages under Olivier Peslier off an even tempo.

British raider Sea Of Grace (Born To Sea) looked set to take out the Group One race at the 200 metres, but Precieuse swept through

Thursday 18 May 2017

in the closing stages to win by a length and three quarters, with a further three quarters of a length back to Heuristique (Shamardal) in third.

The Charlie Appleby-trained and Godolphin-raced Sobetsu (3 f ex Lake Toya by Darshaan) ran out an emphatic winner of the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr 1, 2000m) at Deauville on Sunday, giving Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) his 131st stakes winner and 28th Group One winner.

The filly raced just in behind the leader in the early stages under William Buick in a steadily run race, and once asked to quickened approaching the 300 metres she sprinted clear in taking fashion to beat Vue Fantastique (Motivator) by three lengths, with fellow British raider Coronet (Dubawi) a further length and three quarters behind in third place.

Newmarket-based Appleby revealed earlier this week that Sobetsu will return to France for the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) on 18 June, rather than tackle the Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom on 2 June, citing the filly’s preference for easier ground.

There were several key Classic trials in England last week, with Venice Beach (3 c Galileo - Danedrop by Danehill) leading home an Aidan O’Brien-trained trifecta in the Chester Vase (Gr 3, 1m4.5f) at Chester last Thursday to put himself in the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) picture.

top-class racemare Danedream (Lomitas), was settled on the rail in third place in the early stages by Ryan Moore and, once angled out to mount his challenge in the straight, he ran on strongly to beat his stablemates Wings Of Eagles (Pour Moi) and The Anvil (Galileo) by a length and a quarter and a nose respectively.

The following day, his stablemate Cliffs Of Moher (3 c Galileo - Wave by Dansili) continued the excellent form of the O’Brien stable to win the Dee Stakes (Listed, 1m2.5f) at Chester.

The colt raced on the shoulder of the front-running Max Zorin (Cape Cross) until the home straight when he outstayed that rival, and he had enough in the tank to fend off the fast-finishing Bay Of Poets (Lope De Vega) by a length and a half.

Venice Beach and Cliffs Of Moher, who gave Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) his 238th and 239th stakes winners, are now general 14/1 and 6/1 chances for the Derby on 3 June.

The John Gosden-trained Enable (3 f ex Concentric by Sadler's Wells) gave her second season sire Nathaniel (Galileo) his first stakes winner and showcased her Oaks credentials with a convincing win in the Cheshire Oaks (Listed, 1m3.5f) at Chester last week.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the three-year-old filly tracked the leaders in the early part of the contest and had too much speed for the Aidan O’Brien-trained Alluringly (Fastnet Rock), winning by a length and a half.

Gosden also saddled Hertford Dancer (3 f ex Tebee by Selkirk) to win the Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m3.5f) at Lingfield on Saturday, giving Newgate Farm reverse shuttler

Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) his fifth stakes winner. The filly beat another Aidan O’Brien-trained

runner in Pocketfullofdreams (Invincible Spirit) by a length and a half, while the Godolphin-raced Best Solution (3 c Kodiac - Al Andalyya by Kingmambo) entered the reckoning for the Derby with a comfortable win in the Derby Trial Stakes (Listed, 1m3.5f) at the same track.

The colt, who won the Autumn Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Newmarket last October, travelled strongly into contention in behind the leaders under Pat Cosgrave and quickened clear at the two furlong marker to beat Glencadam Glory (Nathaniel) by three and a quarter lengths.

Older

The Andreas Wohler-trained and Australian Bloodstock-raced Red Cardinal (5 g ex Notable by Zafonic) made a winning reappearance in the Oleander-Rennen (Gr 2, 3200m) at Hoppegarten in Berlin on Sunday, providing the late Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) with his 125th stakes winner.

The gelding travelled strongly into contention in midfield on the inside under Eduardo Pedroza, who delivered the five-year-old to make his challenge shortly after entering the home straight.

He found plenty for pressure on his first start since finishing second in the Preis Von Europa (Gr 1, 2400m) in September, staying on well to beat the British raider Nearly Caught (New Approach) by a length and a quarter, with San Salvador (Lord Of England) a further nose behind in third place.

Thursday 18 May 2017

Jamie Lovett of owners Australian Bloodstock said after the race that Red Cardinal could take in stakes races in America and Europe before travelling to Melbourne in the spring for the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

At Lingfield on Saturday, the Chris Wall-trained Mix And Mingle (4 f ex Mango Lady by Dalakhani) ran out an impressive winner of the Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 3, 7f), giving Exceed And Excel (Danehill) his 131st stakes winner.

The filly raced alone on the stands rail under Ryan Moore and quickened up well to beat the dual Group One-winning French raider Qemah (Danehill Dancer) by two and a quarter lengths, with Pirouette (Pivotal) a further length and a half behind in third place.

Earlier in the week at Chester, Aidan O’Brien’s Deauville (4 c Galileo - Walklikeanegyptian by Danehill) led from gate to wire to win the Huxley Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2.5f).

The four-year-old, a Grade One winner in America last season who finished a close second in the Gordon Richards Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) second up at Sandown on 28 April, quickened on the home turn and just held on to deny the fast-finishing Poet’s Word (Poet’s Voice) by a neck with Folkswood (Exceed And Excel) a further two and three quarter lengths back in third.

Also at Chester, the John Gosden-trained Western Hymn (6 g High Chaparral - Blue Rhapsody by Cape Cross) got up in the final stride to beat Aidan O’Brien’s US Army Ranger (Galileo) by a short-head in the Ormonde Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5.5f).

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained sprinter Redzel (Snitzel) [121] fought back gamely to score his first Group One victory in Saturday’s

Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1,1200m) returning a Timeform rating in line with recent winners, writes Dean Croker.

After showing his renowned pace, Redzel lifted strongly in the straight to hold on for a half-length win over the late-closing Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice) [119] with Derryn (Hinchinbrook) [117] a neck away in third place.

Redzel returned a rating of 121, the four-year-old gelding measuring up well to recent winners, matching last year’s winner Music Magnate (Written Tycoon) [121] and just one pound below the 2015 winner Boban (Bernardini) [122].

Having his 17th race start, it was Redzel’s seventh win, his fifth at stakes level, and his Timeform rating of 121 was the same figure he had run to in the three previous outings, demonstrating his consistency this campaign.

After resuming with a close second in the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick on 4 March he was again second, beaten narrowly by his stablemate Russian Revolution (Snitzel) [119], in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill on 18 March.

He then held on to defeat Counterattack [118] in the Hall Mark Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on 15 April prior to their rematch on Saturday.

And while second at his latest two runs, Counterattack’s efforts suggest that the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old has returned to his best form this preparation.

Having his fourth run back, Counterattack raced in ninth place, before getting between runners rounding the home turn and he caught the eye in running on late for a very promising second.

His 119 rating matching his career peak achieved when runner-up in the Arrowfield

3YO Sprint (registered as Royal Sovereign Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) at The Championships at Randwick last year.

The third-placed Derryn also made good ground after settling well back in second last place in the 13-horse field before getting through on the rails on turning for home.

Relatively lightly raced, the Lindsay Park-trained sprinter continued his rise among the sprinting ranks and ran to a new career peak Timeform figure of 117, a one pound increase on his win in this year’s Arrowfield 3YO Sprint at his previous start on 8 April.

But all honours of the race went to the winner Redzel who will now head for a spell before tackling the feature sprints during the spring carnival.

In the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stayer Stampede (High Chaparral) [109] was strong all-the-way winner.

He had set a new career peak rating of 105 with a similar front-running victory in the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) at his previous outing and Stampede improved again on that effort to run to 109 on Saturday.

Stampede ran only one pound below 2016 Chairman’s Handicap winner Real Love (Desert King) [110] and four pounds below 2015 winner Epingle (Pins) [113] and is the first entire to win the race since Another Warrior (Brave Warrior) [106] in 2003.

The Mick Price-trained five-year-old The Chairman (High Chaparral) [103] battled on well for second, beaten a length with the New Zealand-trained Chocante (Shocking) [100] a length and a quarter back in third.

The Chairman ran to a new career peak Timeform figure of 103 with Chocante running to a figure of 100, his highest since winning the Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) at Pukekohe last campaign.

Stampede, who was backing up in just eight days after winning the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup, will now be sent for a spell to prepare for spring features.

Feature racing at Scone on Saturday saw the Ron Quinton-trained mare Daysee Doom (Domesday) [108] secure a much deserved Group win in the Dark Jewel Classic (Gr 3, 1400m).

Having been ultra-competitive in Group racing throughout the autumn, Daysee Doom settled just off the leaders before proving too strong for Prompt Response (Beneteau) [106] to score gamely by a head with Serene Majesty (Fastnet Rock) [109] a long neck back in third.

Daysee Doom ran to a new career peak Timeform figure of 108, one pound above her second placing in the Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill three starts back on 25 March.

Saturday’s win was Daysee Doom’s sixth from only 12 starts and the four-year-old mare became the highest rated winner of the Dark Jewel Classic since Sung (Anabaa) [110] in 2008, and rated eight pounds above last year’s winner Danish Twist (Dane Shadow) [100].

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained mare Prompt Response was very good again in second, running to a new career peak of 106 with Serene Majesty’s late-closing third with a rating of 101, her highest in four runs this preparation.

Tumble AtInglis Easter Yearling Sale

Lydia Symonds | Journalist @symondsl

At the close of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the last at the historic Newmarket complex, key statistics revealed gains across the board. In a year where records tumbled all week and with two new sales, the Chairman’s Sale for Racing Prospects and Chairman’s Sale for Breeding Prospects that were well received, statistics show the Australian market has never been in healthier shape.

while there was a 30 per cent rise in median from $200,000 to $260,000.

In a year which saw a slightly reduced catalogue, the sale finished with 305 of the 355 lots offered selling for a total of $108,470,000, which was a healthy rise of ten per cent on last year’s corresponding session, when 349 lots of the 415 lots were sold for a total of $98,937,500.

Mark Webster, managing director of Inglis, told ANZ Bloodstock News that the choice to have a more select catalogue was a conscious one to ensure that quality is always favoured over quantity.

“We’ve had a few people ask why the numbers catalogued for Easter were down on last year and I think the results in the sale ring provide the answer. We decided to be even more disciplined with yearling selection this year to ensure Easter maintains its reputation as the source of the best of the best, and that strategy certainly paid dividends,” Webster explained.

However, George Moore, who purchased five yearlings for a total spend of $3,920,000, told ANZ Bloodstock News he would prefer to see a larger catalogue which would offer him a greater choice.

“I would rather a bigger draft of horses as this gives us a bigger target population to make our final selections from and in term spread the market out a bit,” said Moore. “I think the reason for us paying a premium this year was because of the reduced supply. “

Meanwhile Jon Freyer, bloodstock manager at Arrowfield Stud, who finished leading vendors for the second successive year, told

ANZ Bloodstock News that, while this helped with the quality of the catalogue, it meant that the results were saturated at one end of the market.

“The key is the benchmark Inglis has established for the quality of sale entries, rather than a specific size for the catalogue. That gives vendors a clear standard of pedigree and type to aim at and buyers a lot of confidence in what’s offered to them,” said Freyer

“However, that said, this year’s smaller catalogue did concentrate the market’s activity on fewer horses and we saw the result particularly on the third day, when people who had missed earlier lots had the firepower to bid more on their final selections.”

Peter O’Brien from Segenhoe Stud, who finished leading vendors by average said the market was certainly boosted by the reduced catalogue and echoed the sentiments of Fryer that they have learned over the years the type of horses that do well at the sale.

“The smaller catalogue, of course helped to push the market to those heights, but we as vendors have been learning each year. For example last year we passed in a few horses at Easter and in hindsight probably shouldn’t have taken them there.

“The market generally finds its own level and it is up to us as vendors to try and figure that out and all credit has to go to Inglis they were stricter as far as what they were taking to Easter and I think the market thanked them for that, and I know we as vendors thanked them for that also.”

Webster, believed that the draft the vendors offered at this year’s sale was top-quality and

M A R K E T V I E W Thursday 18 May 2017

that was reflected in the results at the end of the three days.

“Vendors presented horses of the highest quality and they are got well rewarded for their hard work, and buyers appreciate only having to inspect the best of quality. Easter is not about numbers, it’s about a standard.”

“The statistics back that up. We sold less horses this year yet the average increased 26 per cent year-on-year to more than $355,000, median jumped 30 per cent to $260,000 and there was a $10,000,000 increase in gross from last year.”

Heading the buyers table for the second successive year was Shadwell Stud Australasia after they purchased 12 lots for a total spend of $5,755,000 at an average of $479,583. The most expensive of their purchases was a colt by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), catalogued as Lot 162, from the Milburn Creek draft, which they bought for $800,000.

Angus Gold of Shadwell told ANZ Bloodstock News that he thought the reduced catalogue was a very good move by Inglis, explaining that he felt it gave him more time to see all the yearlings he wanted to see during the inspections.

“I thought it was fantastic,” said Gold. “It personally gave me much longer to see the horses it was wonderful. I suppose by the sheer laws of supply and demand it made the competition more fierce, but from the point of view of working the sale it made it easier.

“I thought the quality this year was high, I’m not sure it made it better. I actually thought there were more good colts last year than this year.”

Commenting on the standard of the reduced catalogue this year, Webster continued: “I’ve been at Inglis almost ten years now, and plenty of my colleagues have been here longer than me, and none of us could recall a stronger catalogue than this year’s,” said Webster.

“We had all the leading stallions represented and the right balance of stallions, and the

quality of the animals the vendors presented was outstanding, and when you combine those two things you are going to have a very strong catalogue. Importantly, both the vendors and buyers left happy so the overall feedback has been nothing but extremely positive.”

Arrowfield On Top AgainArrowfield Stud finished the sale as the

leading vendor by aggregate after selling 34 yearlings for $18,595,000 at an average of $546,912, and were also responsible for offering the sale topper of both Session One and Two.

With three stallions inside the top ten it was a very strong year for Arrowfield Stud sires both in and out of their draft, however Fryer told ANZ Bloodstock News that it was not just the performance of their proven stallions, such as Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) and Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), but one of the first season sire’s which filled him with most encouragement at the close of trade.

$320,000, $280,000 and $240,000. He’s building good momentum with his first crop two-year-olds and we’re excited about seeing their progress as spring three-year-olds,” said Freyer.

Segenhoe Stud, who lead the way by average (three or more lots sold), sold ten lots for a total of $6,500,000 at an average of $650,000.

“We were extremely happy with our results. We know the way Easter is now, you’ve got to bring the right model, you’ve got to tick every box.

“Primarily they have to be a very good type and backed up with suitable pedigrees, which is the norm for Easter, but more obviously in the last few years,” said O’Brien.

“You’ve also got to have a clean horse, we are very conscious of that so we streamlined the horses that we think are suitable, thinking of those parameters. So this year we went to the sale and we knew we had a nice draft and every single one of them bar one made well above what we thought.”

Sale in January, O’Brien said that another encouraging factor at this years renewal was the high performance within the middle market, which he again put down to the strength and depth on the buying bench.

“But the biggest kick for me was that a lot of horses made between $500,000- $700,000 that were extraordinary sales, they were of course lovely horses, but making that much, for me really typified the strength in the market.”

O’Brien was also pleased to see the international interest, not just in the draft offered by Segenhoe, but throughout the sale in general and believes this shows the strength and confidence buyers have in the Australian market.

“We had, South Africa, we had Hong Kong interests it was just a cross-section of buyers, which again shows the strength of the market from all across the world,” said O’Brien.

“There were only two horses bought domestically out of our draft at the sale and that for me exemplifies what the sale is about. The international interest from various countries and for us, we have some nice colts which ticked the box for Hong Kong and we had some extraordinary interest from Hong Kong on a number of those horses.”

Hong Kong Double Their Market Spend

The leading purchaser from Hong Kong was George Moore, who bought five yearlings for a total spend of $3,920,000 at average of $784,000. The most expensive of these was a colt by the Arrowfield Stud-based stallion Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).

Catalogued as Lot 395, the colt is out of Top Cuban (Anabaa), a winner as a juvenile, who has produced two winners from as many foals to race to date, including 2014 BTC Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) winner Havana (Starcraft), and he will be raced in Hong Kong.

Moore told ANZ Bloodstock News that he was impressed with overall quality of the whole sale, and that given the way horses had been selling all week he was not surprised to have to pay that much, especially for a Snitzel.

“The general quality was great as it is most years with a top line good draft of yearlings and a pedigree to match. Every year Easter is on the top of our agenda where we have selected some of our best horses. It’s not many sales you can have a type and a page to match.

“The Snitzel was an outstanding individual with a page to match and as you know Snitzel as a sire has been on fire of late so of course we were expecting to pay a premium,” Moore

Thursday 18 May 2017

continued. “With the strength of the sale and lots of good judges on him the price was justified.”

The most obvious fluctuation in the market at this years renewal was the market spend by buyers from Hong Kong.

Last year, purchasers from Hong Kong made up 8.44 per cent of the overall market spend at and that astonishingly doubled this year to 16.10 per cent. Three of the leading purchasers as this year’s sale were Hong Kong-based.

Moore equates this to the difficulties Hong Kong-based clients have with fulfilling a private purchase at home, believing travelling to Australia the most cost effective approach to buy stock.

“I think most clients are struggling to fill their private purchase permits in Hong Kong and therefore reverting to buying and training up youngsters. It is also proving to be a cost effective approach as the private purchases are becoming more expensive. Buyers are also realising that there is a lot of upside gain from this approach,” he said.

While Webster believes the success of the graduates of the sale keep clients from Hong Kong returning to the sale year after year.

“Hong Kong have a strict import criteria and are typically after the best of the best colts, so it’s no surprise to see them so active at Easter,” said Webster.

“The Hong Kong Jockey Club had a tremendous sale in March with horses they had bought from Inglis in the past, while John Moore has secured many of his best horses from Easter, like Able Friend, Not Listenin’tome and Eagle Way. Both are certainly kept well aware of the success they are having from our sales, as are other Hong Kong owners and trainers, because there was a lot more competition this year on the Hong Kong quality colts at Easter.”

Success Of The Two Newest Sales

For the first time this year Inglis introduced two brand new sales, The Chairman’s Sale for Elite Racing Prospects and another for Breeding Prospects.

During the Racing Prospects sale five lots sold for a total aggregate of $2,747,000, with the most expensive being Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt), Lot 10 which sold for $1,400,000 to Chris McAnulty Bloodstock on behalf of a Hong Kong-based client.

George Moore took home Eden Roc (Star Witness), who will now be raced in Hong Kong after he went to $900,000 for the colt, who finished fourth in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Moore was full of praise for Inglis’ newest venture and said that he thought in time it would become a sale that clients from Hong Kong would specifically target.

“I think this was a great new sale that will be target by Hong Kong buyers in the future,” said Moore. “As a Hong Kong agent the sale makes it easier and more transparent for our clients since all the owners have agreed to sell

Webster said he was overwhelmed by the success of both parts of the sale, which was boosted by another high-quality buying bench.

“It’s a concept never before attempted in this part of the world so it was a risk, but without risk there is no reward. As with everything new, there is some trepidation and anxiousness but we knew we had formed two quality catalogues and the buying bench obviously agreed, because the figures were beyond our wildest expectations.”

At the breeding prospects sale 70 lots sold for $23,085,000 at an average of $329,786 and a median of $265,000. Three lots sold for $1,000,000 or more with 14 lots selling for $500,000 or more.

The leading vendor by aggregate during the broodmare session was Newgate Farm who sold four lots for $2,215,000 while Coolmore Stud also sold four lots for a total of $2,020,000. During that same session Newstar Partnership was the leading purchaser having bought eight lots for $3,510,000 while China Horse Club bought three lots for $1,800,000.

Arrowfield Stud purchased the former Tony McEvoy-trained Group Two-winning mare Don’t Doubt Mamma (Not A Single Doubt) on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida, catalogued as Lot 49, while Fryer said he was happy with the purchase he said given the timing of the sale it is was a challenge for Arrowfield Stud to specifically target the sale with their broodmares.

“I think the timing and format did work, and again, the key factor was a quality offering,” said Fryer.

“From our point of view, we were very happy to buy Don’t Doubt Mamma for Katsumi Yoshida at the sale, but hard on the back of selling a big draft of Easter yearlings, it’s a logistical challenge for us to present broodmares for sale as well.”

Meanwhile, O’Brien said he was surprised to see how much some of the lots went in the first year and said next year it will be sale that Segenhoe will look to target with the weanlings in particular.

“The Breeding sale definitely worked, the weanlings made extraordinary money and the competition on the mares was intense. But again Inglis was very particular in getting quality stock there and if you took quality stock there you got well paid for it. I can foresee that sale becoming a figurehead sale of the year,” said O’Brien.

“I didn’t think the mares would make that sort of money, I was astounded what they made. But again all of these are indicators about how good the market is in Australia, every breeder is going with the same intention.

“It sends a benchmark, and us at Segenhoe we now know what to expect for next year. Although we generally don’t sell our top of the market mares, but from the weanling side of things we will definitely look at that for next year.”

New Record Priced Yearlings

It was also a record-breaking sale for stallions, with progeny of Darley shuttler Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado), Yarraman Park-

based I Am Invincible, Widden Stud pair Sebring and Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Woodside Park’s Written Tycoon (Iglesia) Arrowfield Stud-based sire Not A Single Doubt, Darley’s Exceed And Excel (Danehill), all setting new records for their sires.

Webster puts this down to the quality drafts offered by vendors as well as the competitive buying bench which assembled for the sale.

“There were several reasons for the high-performances of many stallions. Firstly, the quality drafts presented by the vendors played a significant role in the results. The work that goes in from birth to sale day is enormous and our clients are the best at what they do.

“The market was also very strong. There was a very strong buying bench at the sale

from around the world,” said Webster. “We had buyers from Europe, Asia, America, the Middle East, South Africa and of course Australia and New Zealand and they knew they were coming to a sale that had only the best quality of yearling available.”

When looking for the high performing stallions the operation setting the standard year-on-year is Arrowfield Stud, and this was no different.

While no records were broken this year with his progeny, Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) was the leading sire by aggregate after selling 38 yearlings for a total of $20,425,000, with an average of $537,500.

Another son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), Not A Single Doubt, set the standard by average

(with three or more sold) after all three of his lots that were offered at an average price of $750,000 with a total aggregate of $2,250,000, with his most expensive yearling being a colt, catalogued as Lot 928, who was purchased for $1,250,000 by Domeland.

While Redoute’s Choice himself was responsible for the most sale topper, after Lot 333, a brother to the talented colt Pariah, was purchased for a sale-topping figure of $2,500,000 by Tim Stakemire, on behalf of

Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. Webster believes that Australia has strength

and depth with the stallions they have on offer, which helps boost trade at every sale.

“Australian stallions are on par with the best in the world and their on-track results prove that year in year out, so it was no surprise to us at Inglis that so many stallions set record prices at Easter,” said Webster. “It’s great to see such depth amongst our stallions, seven making a million is quite unusual for any sale.”

While Gold believes the health of the Australian market is down to the buoyancy of racing in Australia.

“The buzz on those championship days is great, we don’t get in Europe,” said Gold. “They attract a younger crowd and a greater number of younger people. But really at the back of the whole thing the prize money is just exceptional and now going up again in Melbourne, which is obviously an incredibly important part of it.”

He was smartly away from barrier nine and settled particularly well in third place behind a reasonable tempo (first 800m 48.80) before moving up nearing the home turn. He took the lead at the 200m and went on to score easily, looking suited to further. Icon Of Dubai was back in eighth place, made a very wide move coming to the home turn, got to third at the 200m and fought on well for a good second at his third race start. The top weight (59kg) Padraig led the field until nearing the 200m before holding on nicely for third at his first run this preparation.

Analysis: The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained filly Josephine Sea put up a smart effort in winning here on debut. She drifted back at the start and was last in the nine-horse field before settling in seventh place (on the rails). She switched behind runners at the home turn, challenged deeper at the 200m and then finished far too well for a very promising win. She is a horse to watch.
