She’s mean at the beginning and even meaner at the end. A more repellent personality woud be hard to imagine, and yet Hedda Gabler is one of the eternal fascinators of the world stage. Since she sprang from the imagination of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen in 1890, this cold-heartedanti-heroine has maintained a tight grip on the attention of audiences across the globe. So what is the mystery of her attraction? No matter how many times we encounter her, Hedda remains strangely inscrutable. Hedda is trapped inside a conventional life: she married the scholar George Tesman but money is short, Tesman’s old rival Eilert Lövborg has turned up again, Judge Brack is visiting with alarming regularity and Hedda’s volcanic boredom is reaching boiling point. So begins a dangerous game as finding purpose in a purposeless existence. Life just isn’t good enough for Hedda Gabler. For Hedda, actions do speak louder than words, and all her actions are destructive. The list of distinguished actresses who have portrayed Hedda is a long one: Ingrid Bergman, Diana Rigg, Glenda Jackson, Claire Bloom and Annnette Bening, to name a few. In Australia there was Cate Blanchett of course, and this year Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre has cast a man, Ash Flanders in the role, though it seems a pity to deny an actress the opportunity to play the role of a lifetime. New Farm Nash Theatre is proud to bring this wonderful play with its fascinating ‘heroine’ to our stage and we hope that you are looking forward to experiencing it as much as we are looking forward to performing it for you. An URGENT call for Front of House and Bar staff… How would you like a FREE ticket to see the upcoming production – Hedda Gabler? Here’s how you can. We are currently in URGENT need of Front of House and Bar staff for all our shows this year. “But what’s involved?” I hear you ask. Front of House staff assist in the set-up of the box office, greet patrons, sell tickets, programs and raffle tickets. For less than an hour’s work, you get a FREE ticket to see the show on a night of your choice – even the night you do the Front of House! Bar staff assist in the set-up of the bar and operate the bar (serving patrons, making tea and coffee, pouring wine, selling chocolates, crisps and cake) before the show and during intermission. While your time commitment is around the same as Front of House, your duties are spread out over the night. And for your efforts, a FREE ticket to see the show on a night of your choice. Contact Brian White directly at [email protected] or via the Nash email or phone if you can offer your services for a night. Nash is turning 20!

Get involved with Nash! If you can use a hammer; sew a piece of fabric; are handy on the computer and love designing; have a passion for meeting and greeting people. Nash needs you.

We are currently updating our files of handy people – people who loved to be involved but who don’t necessarily want to be treading the boards – there is always work to be done before we get to that point. If you are interested in building sets; creating or finding props; sewing and searching for costumes; happy to work behind the bar; on front of house; being a stage manager or operating light and sound, then send us your details and enjoy the excitement of being involved with a production. Email us at [email protected]

Want to become a member? Becoming a member of Nash is easy. Great benefits come with membership, including discounted tickets for shows and drinks at the bar. The cost for an Adult member is $22.00 a year; there are also couples and concession memberships available. Contact us via email, [email protected] to join or renew your membership. Healthy, Helpful Nashies! We rely on the support of our cast and members to publicise our wonderful productions. Can you spare a couple of hours to help us distribute postcards and flyers in the local New Farm area? We will provide everything you need – come along and help Nash get the word out about our great shows and help your heart health in the process – we can’t guarantee you will do 10,000 steps, but you will enjoy the walk. Our next Helpful, Healthy Nashie afternoon will be to promote our upcoming production of Hedda Gabler. This will happen on Sunday May 4 at 11am, meeting at the Playshed.
