DEPARTMENT OF ART

The All-State Art Symposium Mission:

The annual All-State Art Symposium is dedicated to promoting and recogniz-ing the creative talents of high school students from Georgia’s school districts. The symposium’s workshops, juried exhibition, and other events provide high school students with opportunities to develop advanced studio skills, to cultivate aesthetic appreciation, and to recognize excellence in high school art education.Through the dynamic symposium, students, parents and teachers celebrate creativity and the symbiotic relationship of art and society.

DISTRICT JUDGEMelody K. Milbrandt

Melody K. Milbrandt is Professor of Art Education at Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Milbrandt has served in leadership positions in state, national, and international art education organizations. She has made numerous presentations at art education conferences in the United States, Europe, Russia, Asia and Australia. Her current research investigates issues in art teacher preparation, creativity and social justice. Her studio interests include painting and mixed media collage.

STATE JUDGEDennis Harper

An Alabama native, Dennis Harper has pursued concurrent careers as an artist, educator and museum professional. His paintings, prints, and drawings have been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions across the United States, and in the United Kingdom and Italy. Harper’s art has been widely written about and reproduced.

Harper currently works as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, and previously was Curator of Exhibitions at the Georgia Museum of Art. He was a founding board member and past vice president of ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art. The Southeastern Museums Conference awarded his exhibition As Above So Below: the Art of Scherer & Ouporov best exhibition in 2010.
