When taking breaks, remember toput your computer in sleep mode.Adjust your computer’s energy settingsto go to sleep after 5 minutes ofinactivity. Click here to adjust yourenergy settings for Windows and Macs.

Done with work for the day? Unplugyour devices or use a smart powerstrip to reduce unncessary energyusage. A smart power strip recognizeswhen a device is not in use andautomatically cuts off power.

SAVE ENERGY How UCI employees can save energy while working...

Instead of using a personal spaceheater, bring a sweater or blanket forextra warmth. One space heater usesthe same amount of energy as 45 lightfixtures turned on at UCI Student Center.

Use LED bulbs in desk lamps. LEDs, orlight emitting diodes, can reduce energyconsumption by 80-90 percent.

Turn off lights in empty commonareas. Don't rely on the occupancysensor, hit the switch on the way out.

Shut down computers when leavingfor the weekend or vacations. Sendreminders to staff before leaving forholiday breaks.

Consider taking the stairs. Elevatorscan account for 8 percent of abuilding’s energy use.
