“Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became frightened.” How can we describe Peter? At once faithful and fearful, his jumbled responses remind us that he was no spiritual superman, well intentioned though he may have been. Peter wanted to believe, and in fact showed a great deal of confidence in Christ, but the temptation to doubt was strong enough to knock him off his feet, literally.

“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Jesus reprimanded Peter. The words seem harsh. After all, Peter was the only one who had enough faith to even try something as ludicrous as stepping out of the boat onto the water in the first place. But perhaps Jesus wanted to emphasize that our faith needs to be strong enough to weather the storm, so to speak.

If we only believe in Jesus when the wind is calm and the waves are gone, is that truly having faith in him? Is that actually trusting in his supreme power over the forces of the universe? Peter began to sink as soon as a challenge appeared. Jesus called him, and he calls us, to stay on our feet even when the winds begin to blow.

So, what are the winds that threaten our faith? What kinds of gusts are blowing today? Whatever it might be--health problems, financial concerns, relational struggles--none of it is too much for Jesus to handle. But we must step out in faith and trust him! And we need to keep our eyes on him as we do so, instead of getting distracted by the force of the challenges we face. Jesus is bigger than any problem. We have nothing to fear as long as we are walking towards him. Liturgical Publications - Cycles of Faith

"Sibshops" Youth Program DebutsPrince of Peace Catholic Church is launching a new program in August called "Sibshops" for the siblings of parish children who have medical or developmental needs and challenges. Sibshops is a youth support group for these siblings (aged 8-13) filled with dynamic activities that will be delivered in a lively, recreational atmosphere right here at Prince of Peace! This is a "don't miss" opportunity for siblings to meet, socialize and learn with other children who experience similar family dynamics. These positive quarterly workshops will focus on the siblings and also celebrate the importance of their contributions to the lives of their special needs brothers and sisters. The first Sibshops will be held Sunday, August 20 from 2:30 - 5:00 pm at Prince of Peace. This brand-new specialized youth program will be moderated by Megan Everett, POP's Director of Formation, with assistance from Sarah O'Kelley, PhD, Assistant Professor, UAB Department of Psychology and Director, Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic at UAB Civitan International Research Center-Sparks Clinics and several UAB psychology/sociology graduate students. Megan is a registered Sibshops facilitator and the mother of two children, one with special needs. Megan holds a BA and MEd from Indiana University, a MA in Pastoral Studies and will shortly finish a Master of Divinity from Loyola University. She is on the board of directors of the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council, representing parents of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children aged 11-17. RSVP or questions can be emailed to [email protected]. Sibshops is a national program which can be found in public, private or faith organizations that is dedicated to the lifelong and ever-changing concerns of millions of brothers and sisters of those with special health and developmental concerns - www.siblingsupport.org.

Stewardship Reflection 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

www.catholicsteward.com

In today’s Gospel from the Book of Matthew, we hear the remarkable story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. St. Peter reflects his faith in the Lord when he says, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus says simply, “Come.” We do not know if Peter stepped into the water or jumped and it does not matter. His faith and trust in the Lord allows Peter, too, to begin to walk on the water. Clearly when Peter’s focus is on Christ, he is able to accomplish this.

However, when Peter loses his focus and begins to observe and think about the storm raging around him, he begins to sink. To Peter’s credit he knows exactly to Whom to turn in that situation. “Lord, save me.” We may often find ourselves in similar circumstances. Peter knew exactly Who to call out to at the moment of crisis. We may do the same.

God truly loves us; we are His children. Listen to the Word of the Lord in Psalm 91: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

St. Francis de Sales wrote, “Either God will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then; put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.”

Prayer, Formation, & Parish EventsParish Appreciation Day

Sunday, September 10, 2017Beginning with 11:00 am Mass - 4:00 pm

The parish picnic is given in honor of all Prince of Peace parishioners. It is a way of saying thank you to those who lead us, those who teach us, those who serve us, those who pray for us, and those who support us. All are invited to pray and enjoy a day of fun with our parish community.

*Beginning at Noon: Bar-B-Q Lunch (school cafeteria), Beer Garden, Music, Inflatables, Train and the second annual, Hometown Way! Bingo will begin immediately following lunch in the gym. All other activities and food will be in the courtyard outside of the school cafeteria or on the athletic fields.

Back by popular demand…..Hometown Way!Many POP parishioners currently call Birmingham home, but their roots began in a different part of the South, the United States, or the world. Let’s celebrate our uniqueness and meet neighbors with a connection to our hometowns. Last year we had 23 states/countries represented and made the local news! Was your hometown represented? Tents representing different states, regions, or countries will be located on the athletic fields. Be sure to stroll along Hometown Way and enjoy the people, snacks, or drinks in each tent.

Let’s make this year even more fun…..show your hometown pride by joining your hometown team. Team leaders will be listed in the Church Gathering Space, on the POP website, www.popcatholic.org, or by calling Bridget Carter, 205.441.8992. If your hometown is not represented, consider being a team leader - it won’t take much time - and will make the picnic much more fun!

Liturgical Publications - Cycles of Faith

Reflexión 19° Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

www.catholicsteward.com

Jesus simplemente dijo, “Ven.”
