Happy New Year! Its taken them almost a year of research, and many miles of walking, but fi nally a new book about the history of Colwall has been produced. Its been assembled by two enthusiastic members of the Colwall Village Society, one of our most popular local groups with more than 200 members. Meanwhile, the children and parents of St James Primary in West Malvern have produced a book of their own, detailing all their favourite recipes. I’m sure both books will be a joy to read!
I’ve set myself a new goal, to publish a photo of life in our area on every single day of 2013. Its made me look at our area through new eyes. I’m stopping to photograph places that last year I took for granted. I’m spotting the little details of daily life that used to go un-noticed. You can see the results on our website, allaboutmalvernhills.com. The Malvern Hills area really is a beautiful place to live, whatever the weather.

Unusual facts and beautiful photographs make up a new book about interesting buildings and views in Colwall. ‘DISCOVER COLWALL’ has taken the Village Society a year to produce, and Michael Milne is one of the book’s editors.
Michael sits at his kitchen table in Upper Colwall with a final ‘proof’ copy of the book laid out in front of him. ‘It’s been a lot of work’ he says. ‘Even correcting small errors has taken a lot of time, I have a large pile of papers full of the corrections!’.The idea for the book came about after one of the regular gatherings of the Colwall Village Society. ‘One of our members, James Ferguson, is very interested in local history and walking, and gave a talk to the Society about the landscape around the village, explaining aspects of the area. After that talk I suggested creating a historical map’ says Michael. The map took a lot of work but the result was well received. 750 copies were produced but sold out, since when an updated edition has been produced. After another talk to the Society by James Ferguson, Michael suggested it was

time to produce an illustrated book with brief commentaries. That was last April and, after a summer spent photographing the area and collecting local information, the book is now ready.‘There are photographs throughout’ explains Michael, ‘and they’re arranged in a chronological fashion, starting with the geology, then moving through medieval times, to examples of buildings
The Colwall Village Society is one of the largest groups in the area with more than 200 members, and holds meetings three or four times a year when a local speaker will talk about an aspect of the village’s history. See www.allaboutmalvernhills.com for future talks or more information.

‘DISCOVER COLWALL’ will be launched at a special event on Saturday 16th February 2013 at The Colwall Park Hotel, between 11am and 1pm. If you’d like to buy a copy, it costs £5 and will also be available from Colwall Post Office or by contacting the Village Society on (01684) 562245.

built more recently. We wanted to create a record of the village today with information collected locally’.Even if you think you know Colwall well, there are places you might never have set eyes on. Flicking through the book, Michael is pleased with a picture of the dovecote at Barton Court, a circular whitewashed structure. The Yew Tree pub in Colwall Green features with a footnote telling how a yew tree used to stand outside, until it was blown down in a gale in 1915. The pub still boasts a heated footrail that runs around the bar. ‘We’ve done our best’ says Michael, ‘but there is not always a lot of written information’. Michael and James used a mix of written record with oral history and observation to compile the book.

How everyone can enjoya happy Valentine’s Day
3. Cultivate gratitude. Try ten minutes of a spiritual practice called ‘Nei Quan’. To do this sit quietly and ask yourself three questions about your last 24 hours (or the past week) – ‘What have I received?’ ‘What have I offered in return?’ and ‘What trouble has my existence caused?’ We are all very dependent on many other objects and people, and receive much that we haven’t asked for or earned. Refl ecting on what we receive every day can help us cultivate an attitude of gratitude. 4. Think about giving and not receiving. After cultivating gratitude, make a list of fi ve things you’d like to offer to friends, family or strangers on Valentine’s Day. This might be the offer of doing the washing up all day, cleaning an elderly relative’s car, giving some money to charity, baking, calling a friend you haven’t spoken to for ages, smiling at your neighbour even if he never has the time to smile at you… What can you offer?5. Be your own Valentine. What will make you happy? A long hot bath with some lavender oil? A trip to your favourite museum or church? Permission to stay in bed late at the weekend and read a novel? Ordering some new fl ower seeds to plant in the Spring? Think of three small things you could give to yourself and enjoy! 6. Give yourself permission to cancel Valentine’s Day! If none of the previous suggestions work for you, then just make a plan for the evening which means you don’t have to pay any attention to what other people might be doing. I do hope you can see past all the commercialism and rediscover some of the spirit of those early Christian saints like Valentinus and his clandestine marriages.
By Satyavani (Fiona) Robyn from Malvern
How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Are you looking forward to a cosy romantic evening with your beloved? Or do you have mixed feelings, maybe because your current relationship is feeling a bit diffi cult, or because you’re single? Let’s reclaim Valentine’s Day… here’s how! What do we know about the early history of Valentine’s Day? There were many early Christian martyrs called Valentinus (or Valentine), with Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni both being honoured on February the 14th. Until the poet Chaucer linked Valentine’s Day with romantic love in the 14th century (in ‘Parlement of Foules’), there were no strong associations between St Valentine’s and romance or fertility. There is also the legend of one of these Saint Valentines who, in jail and about to be executed for helping Christians escape from persecution, performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer Asterius. He was also said to have performed clandestine Christian weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. The Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that married men didn’t make good soldiers, but Saint Valentine helped them to sanctify their love and risked his own life to do so. Different groups of people celebrate Valentine’s Day in different ways in modern times, and so we can borrow these traditions. In Norfolk ‘Jack Valentine’ will leave presents of sweets and presents for children – you might know some children who’d appreciate a Valentine’s gift! We might also want to do the same as they do in Finland. Here, Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”. With this in mind, here are my suggestions for planning for a happy Valentine’s Day with generous dashes of love…1. Wipe the slate clean. You might have had a bad experience of Valentine’s Day previously, but this year is a new year. It’s okay to leave some space to feel sad about things, but this Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity to have a difference experience, and to look forwards. 2. Make Valentine’s your own. Don’t worry about listening to what the media, your friends or the shops think you ought to do for Valentine’s Day.

So how did the idea come about?I am the mother of a child at the school and when I put the idea of creating a school cook book to the PTA committee, they said ‘Great idea, go for it!’ At first, many families were nervous about submitting what they felt were just basic family favourites often thrown together without too much attention to detail. I had to persuade them that these were exactly the kind of recipes we needed! Fresh ideas seem so much more do-able when they come from people just like us. I have often swapped recipes with mums whose children have been round for tea and who liked what we gave them. I have heard parents at the school gates asking each other for recipes for cakes that appeared in school cake sales, or for soups that featured at the school fair. These are the kinds of recipes that I finally managed to persuade families to send in and once the flow started there was no stopping it!
Who submitted recipes, and what did they submit?Parents, teachers, children and relatives submitted recipes for favourite family meals, snacks, starters, cakes, soups, bread, and puddings. The book was sponsored by local food-related businesses and our sponsors were invited to submit recipes too.
Do you have a favourite recipe? There are over 100 recipes and I haven’t tried them all yet! However, there is a recipe for “Easy Banana Cake” which is so quick and simple to prepare, and so delicious, it has already become a favourite in my household. I am looking forward to Spring when I can make “Wild Nettle & Garlic Soup”.
And is there anything slightly different or unusual?I was quite determined to make this book a little different from other school cook books, and the idea was for it to be very much about West Malvern. We therefore included snippets
All About...
‘A Taste of the Hills’Clare Gilliam is the Editor of a new cookbook to raise money for the library of St James’ CE Primary School in West Malvern.
All proceeds go into the school’s PTA fund, specifically to refurbish and restock the school library. The book costs £6.99 and is available from: Malvern Book Co-op, The Brewers Arms, West Malvern Sugar Loaf Cafe (formerly Regents Shop), West Malvern St James Primary School, or from Clare Gilliam on 01684 561124
about our community, with information on the West Malvern Community Orchard, Abundance Malvern, and Transition Malvern Hills, all in relation to growing, buying and cooking food. We were very pleased to have a “Forager’s Guide to the Year” by Liz Knight of Forage Fine Foods, which explains what food is available for free in the countryside all around us and how to go about foraging for it with our families, month by month.
Do you think people have enjoyed putting this book together? The school’s Head Teacher Karen Surrall sums it up in her foreword to the book. She explains that each recipe ‘reveals an enormous amount of affection for the people who gave us the recipes and for those who enjoy them now’. I think many of the children felt proud that their family recipes made it into print and they also enjoyed illustrating the book. We submitted a recipe handed down from my mother’s mother, and it bought tears to her eyes when my mother saw the recipe in the book. We also had a lot of fun during the book’s launch at school. Everyone brought samples from the book for people to try, and we had cookery demonstrations from the Our Lizzy Cookery School. The following day we had a book-signing at the Malvern Book Co-Op which was enormous fun, the children really enjoyed signing books for customers.

Stephen Bound, who joined Malvern Hills Conservators as Director in July 2012, gives his early impressions of working for the organisation that protects and manages the hills and commons of Malvern. ‘It’s been an incredibly busy 6 months but I can honestly say that I’ve loved every minute of it’ says Stephen. ‘The job is very challenging but very interesting and each day brings something different’. One of the things that has really impressed Stephen is the passion that people have for the local area. ‘So many people take an interest in the well-being of the Hills and Commons. They really care for the landscape and value the access that they have to it. Every day we get letters, e-mails and phone calls commenting on the work we do. Of course we can’t please everybody, but I’m always genuinely happy to hear people’s views. After all, the Hills are such an important community resource and it’s only right that people feel that they are able to have a say in their management’.
New Director takes to life in the Hills at Malvern Hills Conservator
Conservators
One of the topics which gives rise to questions from the public is the clearance of trees and scrub; there are those who would like to see more trees removed and those who oppose their removal. ‘There’s no doubt that some people hate to see trees chopped down’, Stephen acknowledges. ‘However, if we didn’t carry out the clearance then we would lose large areas of wildlife rich grassland, along with the flowers, insects, birds and other species they support. We’d also lose the iconic outline of the Hills and many of the views for which the Hills are rightly famous’.Stephen is optimistic about the future. ‘We have a really dedicated team of staff and volunteers and a Board of Conservators who have the best interests of the Hills and Commons at heart. I’m confident that together we can continue the excellent work that the Conservators have being doing to protect and manage the land for the last 129 years’.

Green Fingers
With snow on the ground and a north wind blowing it is the perfect time to sit in the warm and plan the garden for the coming season.
Over the past decade we have had numerous predictions about our climate, whether it’s a new ice age, drought or even Mediterranean temperatures. Now the current thinking is for wet cool summers and cold winters!
With all these contradictions in mind I have been looking at some plants which will not only tolerate extremes but thrive. Many herbaceous plants native to Europe and the Alps and North America are tolerant of extreme cold and intense heat. Here are a few I would recommend as reliable in almost any weather as well as providing nectar for Bees.
Aruncus (Goat’s Beard) produces white plumes in JuneLavatera has beautiful mallow pink flowers all summer longAconitum, all varieties are tough and come with yellow, blue or white flowersAcanthus Spinosus (Bear’s Breeches) has large shiny leaves with spikes of mauve and white flowers
Inula - these yellow daisies flowered all through the last wet summerRudebeckia is great for a splash of late summer colour Geraniums come in all shapes and colours, most of which thrive in a cooler summer.Winter is also an opportunity to look at those glossy seed catalogues and order some Annuals and Biennials to liven up the borders or pots. There is a beautiful compact Cosmos called ‘Pink Pop Socks’, there’s a Petunia called ‘Tickled Pink’ which is a good weather-resistant trailing variety for tubs and baskets. Several of the Foxgloves catch my eye, Digitalis illumination Apricot is a stunner and will thrive in wet cool summers. The new series of dwarf Buddleias ‘Buzz’ are very useful for butterfly lovers with only small gardens. They only grow to one metre high and can be grown in the garden or in containers.
So why not be adventurous this summer, dazzle the neighbours with a blaze of colour. All you need is a packet of seeds, and a little bit of sunshine.
Have a good February, Spring is nearly around the corner!
Bridget
Winter is in full swing and Bridget’s stuck indoors, but it is not stopping her gardening ambitions.

It will be an evening of anecdotes, banter and favourite pieces from Sunny’s long and distinguished acting career – both humorous and touching in turn.Next we have a new and exciting experience for Ledbury when we show our very first ever Live Screening direct from the Royal Opera House. ‘Eugene Onegin’ by Pyotr ll’yich Tchaikovsky - an Opera full of poignancy and sensitivity with Simon Keenlyside in the title role. (This Project was part funded by the European Union (EAFRD) and Defra through the VITAL Herefordshire LEADER programme.)We are pleased to present three popular films this month starting with ‘The Angels’ Share’ a bitter sweet comedy from director Ken Loach. The next film will be ‘We Bought a Zoo’ based on the inspiring and true story of a family’s struggle to overcome adversity as they try to restore a Zoo to its former glory. Finally this month ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’ the moving story of Li Cunxin. Discovered in a poor Chinese village at 11 he is sent to study ballet. During a cultural exchange in America he falls in love and ultimately manages to defect and become a principal dancer with the Houston and Australian Ballets.

Carl Flint, writer of three ‘Pictorial Guide’ books of the Malvern Hills, introduces his first local walk on the hills. From the Clock Tower in North Malvern to West Malvern via Table Hill and End Hill, you will be able to enjoy beautiful views and learn about our local history along the way.
Carl admits it took him four years to complete his fi rst pictorial guide, which was published nearly three years ago. ‘It was a huge amount of work’ he says. ‘It started when I looked in libraries and bookshops, and although there were some books with local walking routes, and others on local history, I couldn’t fi nd anything that put the two together. I’m a keen runner and I know all the local paths, so I combined that knowledge with research on local history.’ The fi rst book had just two walks but at 220 pages long there was a huge amount of information contained within its covers. ‘When I give talks, people sometimes like to challenge me, and think they know everything about the town they live in. I always manage to tell them something they didn’t know before! My favourite example is the dragons on rooftops. A builder in Victorian times must have had stylised ridge tiles made, and used them on several local buildings including one on St Ann’s Road.’Carl has now published three books which contain plenty of illustrations. He’s working towards a fourth, and is currently researching a route leading from West Malvern to Brockhill Drive. ‘These are not boring guide books that simply say ‘walk a hundred metres and turn left’ says Carl, ‘I create something people can enjoy reading at home as much as taking outdoors.’

This delightful if somewhat strenuous 2.3 mile walk starts from either the North Hill or Tank Quarry car parks on the North Malvern Road, map reference SO 7705 4700. The path up to Table Hill is very steep and therefore not suitable for buggies or for very young children. There are far-reaching views across Herefordshire to the west, Shropshire to the far north-west with the Severn Valley and Worcestershire to the East. The return journey is via West Malvern. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes without refreshment breaks. North Hill 397 metres, (1303 feet), Table Hill 372 metres and End Hill 329 metres. To download the full details of the walk, please to go our website www.allaboutmalvernhills/Local Life and click the ‘Historic Walks on the Malvern Hills’ window.

This year’s February production is a new departure for the Players. Experienced director Lee Farley of Perfect Circle Theatre Company, who has frequently acted and directed for the Players in the past, is directing a group of local actors in what is described as a ‘devised piece’. In a manner similar to the approaches of film director Mike Leigh, the group will arrive at the final script through games, exercises and improvisations, each member bringing their own ideas to every rehearsal, culminating in an approved script and a polished performance.
The final production will be performed in tandem with a one-act play, LIFELINES, by the well-known playwright Amy Rosenthal. This is being directed by Duncan Lewis, and is being presented by two very experienced Colwall actors. The third, and vital, member of the cast is an all-important telephone.
Performances are at 7:30 pm in the Village Hall, on the 28th February and the 1st and 2nd March. Tickets cost £10 [£8] and can be booked in advance through the Colwall office of John Goodwin 01684 540300
