The building of “les Frigos” is well known among Parisians because of its heavy figure that stands out in the heart of the 13th district, near the banks of Seine. Stuck in time, the building appears as an object out of context, alienated from the clean architecture of the buildings around it.The building was erected in 1921 by Paris-Orleans Railway Company and served for unloading and storing cold foods that were being transported to “les Halles” in Central Paris. Dominated by a water tower, the construction consists of two buildings placed in an “L” shape, one of them including only refrigeration chambers, while the other benefits from a more precious architecture and hosts offices. The demolition of Paris’ “les Halles” in the late 60s put an end to the activities of the refrigerating warehouse. The site is disused and left abandoned for nearly 15 years, but in the 80s a group of young artists, mostly jazz musicians, will install itself in the building in order to carry out artistic activities. Since then, the building, which was friendly baptized «les Frigos» (the fridges), has been a site of creative and artistic production. Artists in various fields installed themselves here, from painters or sculptors, to actors and dancers, transforming the place in a multidisciplinary space. Since 1995, the municipality has been developping an extensive reconstruction project for this part of the city. The urban planning project began with the construction of the new National Library, a few tens of meters away from the former refrigerated warehouse. Since then the building has been finding itself in a different context. Office buildings and housing, with a carthesian and cold architecture, rose gradually around it, pushing the limits of its parcel. Unfortu-nately, the site of “Les Frigos” did not receive the same attention as its new neighborhood.

The site asserts itself as the cultural-artistic pole of the area, which along with the University of Paris VII, installed in the refurbished buildings of Paris’ Great Mills, will be the animated center of the area. In order to become a real cultural focus point in the district and a social engine for the surrounding population, the site of “Les Frigos” must broaden its field of activities and develop public recei-ving facilities.The new facilities added to the artistic studios will serve as support for creative arts expression within and outside the center. Thus, the old building will continue to house at its upper levels studios and workshops for artists. This part of the building will not be restruc-tured throughout the project, but will remain a private area dedicated to artists, open to evolution, where each user will be able to define his space, in the same way that happens today.An important aspect in the project’s approach is contained in the differences between the actual street level and the original site level. The character of each exterior space is defined in relation to its location in the urban tissue and the facilities with which it communi-cates. The copper cladding of the facade is ment to emphasise the austere, industrial atmosphere that the building stands for while contras-ting with the sorrounding architecture. Modeling the newly created volume as a landscape in order to relink the street with the public realm of the site leads to the development of a dynamic space where the viewer is constantly subjected to new sensations and perceptions. Thus, the old building is endowed with new aesthetic and functional values.

The site is located in «Gondoles» Park - an unstructured and highy complex landscape at Villeneuve-Saint Georges, near Paris, France. The attention to the condition of the contemporary landscape in its critical reality is part of an architect’s profession. The goal here is to ensure the discovery of the necessary tools for approaching this place in all its complexity.The architectural language that was chosen for the project is in perfect agreement with the natural context in which it is inserted. The shapes and the morfology of volumes derive from the landscape and the architectural language is an organic one. Furthermore the constant threat of a flood (the Seine is situated near-by), determined the incastration of the architectural body in the ground and its relation to the water. The cultural and educational facilities have been separated from the residential ones with the purpose of achieving a certain intimacy for the dwellings. All the public facilities were organised around a two-level circular patio creating a public open space.

The site is located on the banks of Chalais lake in Meudon forest. The lake was once part of a great monumental promenade designed by the famous french garden artist le Notre for the castle of Meudon. On one side of the lake we can still see today the Hangar Y, a building which was used for the construction of the world’s first zeppelin.The project was placed opposite to the Hangar Y, on the other side of the lake. The goal was to transform the hangar into a vivid part of the composition and for it to become an exhibit object, part of the museum.The building is generated around the exhibition course. This trajectory finishes in front of a screen-like window which opens up the view towards the airshed, thus making it the climax of the display. The whole architectural object can be compared to a being that has raised its head above the water to admire the beatiful construction, marvel from the beginning of the century. The two constructions become now a whole sunken in the green environment of the forest.

The project aims to implement a preliminary study required for the restoration works at Dealu Frumos fortified church. The histori-cal ensemble, dating from the 13th century, has suffered many changes over the years, additions or alterations and also many damages. The study focuses on three specific issues: the state of the enclosure walls that suffered major damage over time, the disappearance of the church’s collaterals and the initial entry portal, missing stairs and a watch road allowing access to the upper levels of the buildings forming the enclosure. In addition to these problems, the rehabilitation of the enclosure was conceived so as to take into consideration the stages the ensemble went through during its history (missing elements, the level rise of the court-yard, the change in pavements).After careful research, both on the monument’s history and other contemporary examples of restoration, the proposal tries to improve the buildings’ state by non-intrusive interventions that preserve the evidence of the different overlapping historical layers. However there was a clear intention to distinguish between the existing elements of quality and the ones that do not require preservation. All additions were made in the spirit of contemporary design in order to avoid any confusion in the chronology of interventions and without detriment to any phase of the monument’s history.

The site is situated in the proximity of Bucharest North Rail Station, in a mixed urban tissue.The measures taken in achieving such a project, require a detailed knowledge of the program and of its complex functionality. For its completion, after a careful documentation, two main aspects were taken into account: the location in a dense traffic zone of Bucharest and the impact over the low rise individual housing units located in the site’s proximity.The result was an object consisting of two volumes: the accommodation bar and the volume containing the public spaces (ground floor and entresol). The main material used for the facade is black and grey stone cladding in order to blend in with the context.

The terrain proposed for the project is located in the immediate neighbourhood of Bucharest’s central area, a zone in which functionalist urbanism mixes with isolated new constructions and large ongoing housing projects. Due to this mixity the project’s theme specifically required that the site be devided in two areas: the main one for collective housing and the other for recreational and public services.Mostly, the functionalist residential district is a place deprived of its sense of community. The aim of this project is to find a way to restore this sense, to build a communion among the members of the society, hence the strict separation between the two zones, loisir and housing.Consequent to this segregation a small public square was created whose definig architectural object is a mediateque. The housing units are organized around a large patio which allows the community to develop its activities. The simple architectural expression of the exterior, with a clear mark of vertical ciculations, rhimes with the neighbourhood aesthetics. The patio, on the other hand, offers a more dynamic expression, due to the spatial composition of the apartments which connect with eachother as lego pieces do, generating a different layout for every level.

The urban environement around the site is characteristic for Bucharest’s centre - mixed and irregular, with a lot of desmantled spaces due to forced urbanization during the communist regime.Starting from the site’s shape, which is almost triangular, the intention was to create an object which would be open on all its three sides, a powerfull signal, an event in the neighbourhood. The result was a volume which developped horizontally, standing only one level above the ground.The object is, in fact, a plied, dynamic skin whose gesture reflects the urban pattern in which it is located. At the ground floor one can find the facilities related directly to the public, reception and commerce, which develops as a mezzanine over the real library located at the basement floor. But the exterior skin hides another event, a more explicit one. Through the void of the ground floor two big volumes are raising. These two volumes are in fact two storeys high gigantic bookcases. The project is located in the town of Balchik, a renowened holiday destination on the bulgarian Black Sea coast. In the first phase of its reflection, the program has been separated in three fundamental facilities: the reception, the restauration area and the accommodation zone which were sheltered in three distinct volumes. Their hierachy is guided by the extroversion degree of each of these volumes : the volumes housing the restaurant and the reception area are positioned on the ground while the accommoda-tion rooms are placed at a higher level. The volume of the restaurant is treated separately and does not require a vertical connec-tion as it is detached from the rest of the composition, in order to emphasise its independent use.The whole ensemble is orientated towards the sea and is visually open on this side through its glass facade. The architectural expression is very simple, subordonated to the geography of the site. The ground floor is almost entirely burried in the hill rock. The only volume which can be perceived from all sides is the accommodation bar, which displays a powerfull signal, in the form of a “red box” that marks its main function.

Located in one of the newest residential neighborhoods of
Bucharest, the project aims the achievement of 12 identical
houses on adjacent square lots.
Having to meet current comfort requirements such as the
need for light and space, but facing the small size of the lots
on which they are placed, the houses will have patios in
order to allow their joining. Therefore the L-shape was consi-
dered to best suit this concept, with a square patio at the
back of the parcel.
The living room is the most important area of the house,
situated near the entrance and double oriented towards the
front garden and the patio. There is a level difference
between the kitchen and the rest of the house, the former
being situated lower, thus creating a separation from the
reception areas, without destroying the continuity of space.
The level of the kitchen is continued at the exterior by a
decked patio, which can serve as an outdoor dining. The
house’s night area, with its two bedrooms, is located at the
upper level, in order to respect privacy requirements.
The houses are joined symmetrically, except from the first
and the last batch, which are rotated 90 degrees with the
intention of creating an aesthetic and harmonious architec-
tural relation with the street.

The public health project is part of an ambitious program that aims to transform the site of La Grave in a true cultural center of the city. La Grave Hospital site will be subjected to a radical transformation by combining, in a first phase, all public health functions scattered across the site in the Claudius Regaud Institute’s unused building. In a second phase the La Grave ensemble will become the subject of a conversion, hosting cultural and recreational programs (restaurant, a dance school etc..). The new hospital of public health - formerly the ICR building, will become a creator of urbanity, thus it is imperative to open up the site to its environement. The objective of the 1st phase of the project is to analyze the general organization of the building in terms of functionality: access, circuits, sectorisation, identifying areas that can function independently and valuable surfaces. The evaluation of the ICR building will be conducted in terms of architectural quality, functional links, typology, useful surfaces, state etc. in order to establish the potential of its conversion.

The study has identified the target capacity program, which takes into account the national recommendations. It has been validated in its current form on October 6th, 2011.Two families of implementation scenarios were studied with the goal of a significant reduction in the operating costs of the hospital. The hospital centre runs on two different sites: Nancy Central Hospital and Brabois Hospital.Both scenarios aim to group the hospital’s disperssed activities on the Brabois site, which will include medical services such as medi-cine, surgery, pediatrics and acute geriatrics. Two architectural and urban solutions were studied:_The construction of a new building, medicine and surgery, including emergency and technical support. This building would be located at the rear of the site and would consider absorbing all hospital activity in the current active building (which would be sold or decon-structed);_Restructuring and refurbishing the building of Brabois Adults in the desire to revitalise the sixties’ architectural heritage in an intelli-gent and evolutionary approach.Cronical geriatrics and Alzheimer patients are mantained in the Central Hospital.Both scenarios implement a center for adult ambulatory surgery in the city’s center but conventional activities and ambulatory pediatrics remain implanted at Brabois.

The study has identified problems that the recently built hospital faces. The distribution on every floor of the public receiving sectors for consultations creates an increase in the reception areas, support and movement.The low capacity in bed numbers for hospital units (20 beds) causes an increase in nursing stations and surfaces occupied by circula-tions.Logistics spaces (medical and non-medical) are adapted to the current capacity of the hospital but the margins of evolution to support new activities are very low.The "interior street" leads to the overconsumption of circulation surface in relation to the ideal hospital.The study’s goals are:_improving the patient admission by a centralisation of healthcare;_functional reorganisation by vertically overlapping activities of the same type which allows a less problematic use for staff and patients;_on short-term: healthcare devided into branches; _densification of the hospital unit at more than 25 beds in order to create efficiency.

The client wanted to build a new facility for the frail elderly in Anses d’Arlets town.This project had to be conceptualized and built in two work phases and had to meet all the expectations of the program especially the measures recommended by Alzheimer plan 2008-2012.Our team proposed a comprehensive project that was perfectly achievable in two phases without altering the quality of care for residents.
The architecture of the building is the result of a synthesis of several approaches:1 / An organization of all accommodation units that meets the principles of space arrangements specific to the therapeutic care of Alzheimer's disease: considering the room as a home, taking care of the intimacy and privacy aspects that result, organizing the rooms around a common space in the image of a covered courtyard thereby constituting a household and making the "hospital corridor" disappear in favor of a community space.2 / An organization of all functions based on both effective functionality but also on a developped urban dimension.3 / Architectural and landscape design.

The project’s main goals are:_thinking Flacé 2 as an overall composition to revitalize the existing nursing home Flacé 1 and creating a vegetal passage between Flacé 1 and the landscaped promenade designed by the city;_changing the image of the site by actively participating in the qualification of the landscape;_composing the various program elements around an internal street;_designing living spaces as spaces of urbanity encouraging informal meetings and community life.Collective activities are generally grouped on the street where they take the form of shops. A sheltered promenade brings the user to the main entrance. The facade is treated with brise-soleil in terracotta, in different colors which refer to the colors of the typical tiles of the Mâcon region.The fraction into smaller units of 14 independent beds responds to the treatement of the elderly. Each unit also includes some of the collective spaces required by the program.

The site includes research and teaching laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Earth-Atmosphere-Ocean departments. This project answers the question: how to perpetuate the High Level Research in the center of Paris, in a heritage context of the 30s? By improving the technical performance of buildings Erasme and Lhomond, regulatory standards in terms of planning, fire safety and accessibility issues are resolved.Flow optimization :The main access of the building will be moved on the Lhomond Street. An access will be dedicated to logistics delivery and firefighters. Logistics flows, storage and waste will be treated as processes which better meet regulatory requirements and interface with the urban environment.Creating an evolutionary technical loft on the Erasme wing will create technical spaces in order to manage the vertical fluid irrigation, but also to create a laboratory space for the Department of EAO. This new roof adds value in terms of architecture and it connects to the roof over the Lhomond wing in order to create a continuity of material.

The Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris wants to renovate and install in the existing buildings of Lariboisière Hospital, the Ophthalmology Center Paris Nord. The center will have a dual activity and oupatient surgery and consultation principally for cataract and retina.The center will install itself within two existing pavilions, Pavilion A (Pierre Laurent) and the Pavilion which juxtaposes the Biophysics building.The pavilion A built in 1854, forms the left wing of the main facade of the Lariboisière Hospital, on the Ambroise Paré street and is listed as a historical monument for its facade and roof, by a decree of 1975.To ease the access, the reception facilities, consultations, as well as an office area, are located on the ground floor of the Centre, thus separating the visitors flow.The operation also involves the creation of an additional level in the historical pavilion that has a great height under the roof. This new platform will receive the outpatient surgery area.
