Alfred Wegner's ideas died with him in 1930. 30+ years later Harry Hess provided the missing link "Sound Navigation and Ranging" aka SONAR during WWII. (He was on the ship during the war but published his findings later)
Harry Hess was able to "see" features of the ocean floor. It provided Alfred Wegner's theory with proof of movement.

A deep thought Shadow, the dog, enjoys digging in his owner's backyard during the summer months. One day Shadow begins to dig a hole and doesn't stop digging until the day is over. Shadow's owner is worried that his dog might dig a hole to China and therefore leave his owner. Your job is to take the role of a neighbor and to calmly explain why this not possible. Shadow's owner will not be convinced unless he is told three reasons why he should not be worried (reasons that pertain to the composition of the Earth).

The Great Rift Valley in Africa, what are some features you notice?
Magma pushes these plates apart. The continental crust is thick and you will not see magma on the surface. Water fills in the gap between magma and the surface. We see this water as lakes.

Mountain building
Subduction does not occur at a convergent plate boundary between two pieces of continental crust. Continental crust is not dense enough to subduct, the result is the two pieces of crust being pushed upwards.
