alform® steels
The steel grades of the alform® series have excellent cold-formability and are supplied with minimum
yield strengths ranging between180 and 900 N/mm2.
Normalized and thermomechanically rolled alform® steels
The grades with higher strengths are for applications in which it is important to have good
cold-forming properties (e.g. small bending and edging radii) as well as higher yield strength.
alform® steels can be supplied in normalized and thermomechanically rolled condition.
A major difference between these as-delivered conditions results from the fact that
a) normalized rolled steels show the guaranteed minimum yield strengths even after normalizing
and hence are generally also suitable to cold-forming, whereas
b) thermomechanically rolled steels can be stress-relief-annealed at temperatures ranging between
530 and 580 °C, but the yield strength and the tensile strength decrease during normalizing.
In contrast to comparable standard steel grades, the alform® steel grades feature a lower content of
elements such as phosphorus and sulfur in order to ensure best forming and ductility properties. They
are based on chemical compositions with low carbon content and thus show excellent weldability as a
result of the low carbon equivalent. They are also characterized by a fine-grain, low pearlite or bainitic
structure. This particularly applies to the thermomechanically rolled alform® steels, which combine
the highest minimum yield strength with excellent cutting and punching quality, cold-formability and
weldability as a result of added microalloying elements (Nb, V, Ti) and precise adjustment of the rol-
ling parameters.

Brief information on edges
Provided the edging has been carried out properly, the inner edging radii listed in the table below
are guaranteed without crack formation for the finished part. For alform® steels with guaranteed
tensile strengths up to < 500 N/mm2, the smallest admissible inner radius can be adjusted by varying
the die widths, for alform® steels with guaranteed tensile strengths up to > 500 N/mm2 by adjusting
the appropriate punch radii. The values guaranteed for alform® steels for the smallest admissible in-
ner radius on the finished part are, with the same strength, not only clearly better than for structural
steels in accordance with EN 10025 but also for thermomechanically rolled steels in accordance with
EN 10149.
