Welcome to your Guide to making the most of your GoTrovo Family Treasure Hunt Game (Edition 2)! This guide is intended to give you lots of fun ideas for how to play

our game and get the most from your purchase.

Our company came to life in 2012, inspired by our own little people! GoTrovo Family Treasure Hunt Game was our original product, and is based on the hunts we used to make for our children....we have 7 of them between the two of us!

We had so much fun creating our treasure hunt game. The kids helped us dream up clues, coloured some of the pictures you see in the pack, and tested riddles with us over the dinner table. Our products really are the result of family life!

But what drives us to do what we do? Well, we know parenting is TOUGH, but we still think kids’ childhoods should be full of magic and excitement. And we think that family fun and imaginative play is the very best way to achieve this. So our products aim to make your life a little bit simpler, by giving you some ready-made magic-in-a-box, to enjoy whenever and wherever you can!

Over 50,000 families have tried our games and loved them!

SECTION 1: Making the most of your GoTrovoThe instructions in your game cover the basics for treasure hunting fun, but here are a few more hints to keep your mini-people on their toes!

To entertain kids of different ages

• Lay a trail with both riddle and picture clues and allow the players to take it in turns to solve clues appropriate to their age

• Get the older children to LAY the trail for the little people - great for lateral thinking!

• Ask the older children to CREATE clues using the blank cards and a wipeable marker, or even using pictures of objects cut from magazines and a bit of tape (to stick them to the blank cards).

• Encourage older children to try to create riddles as part of this exercise - ask them to think of an object, and then find a way to describe it picking out its key features. Sshhh – don’t tell them but this is a great educational exercise - and the riddles don’t need to rhyme.

What to put in the gold bar

• A fun promise inside (like an extra story at bedtime or go bigger - a trip out to the cinema!)

• Bake some cookies together and pop them in - great for delaying that instant gratification!

• Grab yourself some cheap colourful gemstones and fill the bar with them – check out Amazon!

• Bury the bar in the garden and pop in a letter from a pirate (easy to make with a tea bag to stain the paper)

• Pop in their favourite card game and play that next - or even hide some trading cards in there to keep them happy for the afternoon!

• Include stickers, paper and/or mini paint pots for an art project

• Pop their favourite (small) cuddly toy inside, ready to greet them with a hug!

Page 3: Aley & Jo xx

Longer and harder trails

• Get them running all over the place by creating greater distance between each clue - you can mix indoor and outdoor clues to get them really covering the ground!

• Place clues in less prominent locations (peeking out from under an item) or use non-specific locations (such as door or window - we assume you have lots of these in your house!) so they have to search harder.

• Add in some fun physical forfeits between each clue - there are a whole load for you to use at the end of this book. Just print and have fun!

• Try a cryptic treasure hunt – for instance for “bed” make it the bed in the dolls house, or the dog or cat bed. “Wall” could be a lego wall. Challenge the child(ren)’s observation and deduction skills with your ‘out of the box’ thinking! Older kids will be naturals at laying this kind of trail for younger kids and giving verbal clues to help narrow it down! Other ideas might be: Hairbrush could be a dog brush; Lamp could be a lamp on a bicycle, or a torch; Flower could become flour - really cruel; Clock could be on a phone or an oven (beware of hot surfaces) rather than a traditional clock; Water could be in a radiator (again - avoid hot surfaces) as opposed to free flowing water; Umbrella could be a sun shade in the garden as opposed to a small rain umbrella. You get the idea!

Extending play

• Why not set up a game of pirates or treasure island once the kids have completed their hunt? They can use the coins and gold bar as part of the play (we’ve given you a spare gold coin in case they lose one!)

• Think about making the ‘reward’ at the end of the hunt something a bit different - like a promise of a trip to the park or cinema, or a teddy bears’ tea party

• Play shops with the gold coins your child(ren) collect as part of their hunt. You could even get the childern to “buy” their reward with the gold coins.

Other ways to play

• Instead of every player searching for every clue, play by taking it in turns and have yourselves a little relay! One child goes to find the first clue location, returns with the next clue and hands off for the next child to solve and find. Lay the trail exactly as you would for a standard game, just take it in turns when you start to play!

• Time your game: try and beat your time over successive trails (be careful with running too fast!)

• Have the children lay a trail for the adult! I bet they think of places you wouldn’t to hide the clues!

Page 4: Aley & Jo xx

1. USE THE CARDS FOR A TRADITIONAL SCAVENGER HUNT:

• Choose cards with items the child(ren) can collect and bring back to you (shoe, bag, saucepan, trousers, phone, pillow). You can create a list of 10 or so items by giving them the 10 cards.

• Challenge the child(ren) to be the first to bring back all of the items in the list.

• You can create 2 lists and create a race for the children to compete against each other. Alterna-tively you can time them to see how quickly they can complete their list.

• Then have a race to put all the items away afterwards!

2. COLLECT THE MOST GOLD COINS TO WIN!

• CARDS (not coins) are laid face down in the ten positions on the board

• Hide the 10 gold coins in a few of the locations depicted on the cards – for example, 3 here, 2 there, 1 there etc. You can make it extra hard by spreading the coins across a location - so if you choose the location window, you can leave the coins by a few DIFFERENT windows.

• Children take it in turns to pick a clue from the board. That child then goes to that location (re-member the location may have multiple ‘sites’ as with the window example above) and returns with any gold coins found!

• Whoever has the most coins at the end of the game wins!

Sshhh don’t tell the little ones but GoTrovo is

Educational as well as great fun!

GoTrovo is a great educational resource: it is an imaginative, physically active, and educational game. It is used in many schools, kindergartens and pre-schools, not only because it is fun, but because it directly supports Early Years learning targets across a number of areas:

• Communication and language development. Children extend their vocabulary, comprehension and deductive skills as they solve riddles and identify potential locations.

• Literacy, by encouraging reading and writing opportunities, and through use of descriptive language.

• Physical development, with active indoor and outdoor trails.

• Motor skills development, placing cards on the map and coins in the loot bag.

• Social development, by encouraging children to communicate their ideas. They have the opportunity to work as part of a team, taking turns and sharing roles.

• Exploration of senses and feelings in the real or imagined world. Remember, you can add that role-play “pirate” element to the game.

• Logic, as they figure out the trails laid for them. What are the riddles describing? Can they create their own riddles detailing the attributes of an item? Is the door they are searching for the door to a room… or to a cupboard?

• Opportunities to explore directional language - above, below, beyond, near, behind, left and right, to name but a few!

GoTrovo Treasure Hunt can also be used to cover a wide range of reading and speech development targets. It allows children to learn without pressure, in a fun and stimulating way. Their ability to identify, name or read the items in the clues gives a clear and easy way to track progress - why not keep a record of how many items they can name or pronounce correctly, and the date/age at which they do this? You can also use the blank clue cards to create your own clues if there are specific targets or sounds you want to focus on.

SECTION 2: Forfeit Sheets

Here’s how to use the forfeit cards...

Cut along the dotted lines to create 36 forfeit cards. Each card contains instruction for a physical activity. Hide a selection of these cards around the treasure trail alongside the main treasure hunt clues (so your kids will find the forfeit card with the treasure hunt clue) You can hide as many forfeit cards as you like depending on how active you want to make your treasure hunters!

Each time they find a forfeit card alongside a clue, they have to complete that physical activity before they can move on. The mix of commands is aimed at children of all ages. Including these cards will make the game longer and your kids more active!

So it’s Ready, Steady, Go!
