CONCEPT: The concept of this project was inspired by the idea of an outdoor terrace located within an urban setting. Colors found in the space consist of a calm, neutral pal-ette accented with bright hues derived from the city streets. A mixture of straight and curvilinear lines added contrast as well as balance to the newly-designed space. A variety of textures were used to reflect the outdoor landscape and downtown street atmosphere.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project was based on a reno-vation of Brough Commons dining hall located at the Uni-versity of Arkansas. ies•Use a arrangements that gives workers the option of facing away or towards others, or use curvilinear work surfaces that are easy to gather around at the front of the space.

•provide a variety of partition-like options for individual work spaces, e.g., moveable screens, or even plants, which can be strategically placed.

•Manage acoustics through sound masking. sound management is most effective when planned for in the early stage of design rather than as a temporary fix later.

•add a padded file cabinet that doubles as a perch or provide guest seating that nor-mally resides outside the workspace but can easily be pulled in when needed or used to signal when a coworker isn’t invited to linger for a sit-down visit.

• provide other group open or group enclosed meeting spaces close by that can be used on an ad-hoc basis.

“Love architec-ture, be it an-

cient or modern. Love it for its fan-tastic, adventur-ous and soelmn

creations...” -Gio Ponti

The exploration of light-weight and elegant designs is a reoc-curing theme in Ponti’s work. His later work is dominated by surfaces which he contin-ued to disintegrate as seen in the open facade of his lumi-naire “Fato,” or Concattedrale of Tarento. The intricate lamp is composed with geometrical metal screens creating light and dark, with filled areas and voids, all enclosed in a square frame. The lamp is made up of white enamalled plate that is laser machine cut, folded, and then welded. The fato lamp was designed in 1969, but wasn’t manufactured until 1999. Pon-ti’s light-weight designs have influenced many of today’s de-signers such as Phillipe Stark and his Ghost Chair design.

the fato lamp historyGio Ponti was one of the most influential Italian ar-chitects and desingers of the 20th century. Bornin Milan, Italy in 1891, Ponti’s accomplishments through out his life are almost impossible to summarize. Gio Ponti spent most of his life in Milan where he enrolled at politcnico to study architecture. In 1921, Ponti received his degree in ar-chitecture but decided to be an artistic director for the ceram-ics manufacturer, Ricard-Ginori. There he gained a love for color, shapes, and fine craftsmanshp. Ponti believed that architecture-and design were harmonious and connected to one another. architecture and design. As an architect, Ponti designed one of his most famous build

ing, the Pirelli Tower in Milan. As an architect, Ponti designed one of his most famous building, the Pirelli Tower in Milan. Dur-ing the 1950’s, Ponti devoted more time to industrial design. His super light chair the “Sup-perleggra,” dating from 1955-1957, became and instant de-sign classic. The chair was so light that a child could lift it up with one finger. Many of today’s designers have been influenced by Ponti’s light-weight concept. Ponti’s style ranged between Classicism and Modernism, and between craftsmanship and industrial production. In 1979, Ponti passed away in his home in Milan. Though he is no longer here, his legend still re-mains. Ponti was overall a “de-signer of a thousand talents.”

He has pushed the boundar-ies between self-expression and design and has set the standard for modern design.
