slowly. This is her second year finishing as #1 ASFA Ridgeback and she was also one of the first three

Ridgebacks to earn a CKC FCh in 2019, with all three finishing on the same day! She is also #5 in AKC

coursing and will finish in the RRCUS Combined Top Ten for the second year in a row. Jinx has an

amazing enthusiasm for life and is full speed ahead, 100% of the time.

ASFA President’s Report “TOGETHER WE ARE IMPROVING OUR ASFA”

It is amazing what I have learned about being the president of our ASFA. Every day offers an opportunity for me to learn something new. I think it will always be a work in progress. The one big thing that I have learned is that no matter how much you try; you cannot do everything yourself. I will take this time to Thank everyone for pitching in and helping ASFA accomplish what we have in the last two years and in the past 40 years. I would like to mention all of the ASFA volunteers that we have all known and worked with over the years. Sadly, some have recently passed away. Please remember the loved ones of these folks with your thoughts and prayers: Pete Mendicino, Jane Schreiber, Wes Shainline, Annie Chamberlain, Jill Bryson and Judy Lange, as well as many others. We would like to do something to remember those who have passed on each year on the website or in the Communiqué or both. Please send me the names, a photo of their obituary from the local newspaper and a short write up of the people that you know and remember. I feel our two biggest accomplishments this past year, as we have worked together, for our ASFA have been:

• The Communiqué, which has been fantastic with the dedicated work of its editor, Vicki Fagre-Stroetz. Thank You Vicki! Vicki has been the editor for 8 fantastic Communiqués including this one. They can be found on our website under the information tab and then click on Communiqué. Once I have opened, printed and read each Communiqué I then save it to refer to again.

• The LCI program has been a great plus for our clubs by increasing entries and workers. These newcomers have really fit into our coursing family by joining clubs and coming to dinner with us. I have enjoyed watching their dogs having the time of their life, chasing the lure while their owners enjoy watching their dogs have fun. Greg, many thanks to your committee and you for a job well done.

• UPDATE !!!!! 126 individual LCI dogs entered for a total of 336 LCI entries. Not bad for the first year. My biggest disappointment so far, as president, is Paragon; the company we have been working with to update our records program. As of this writing, I do not know if they are any closer to delivering our finished product than they were the day I took office. Tom Cigolle has talked to them and they tell us that we will now be able to start entering data . Lori, ASFA’s Records Coordinator, is finishing up the end of the year reports and will then start trying to enter trials. Lori and I might meet with Paragon at their office sometime before the ACOD. Since we are starting off a new year, it would be great if it works. This committee consisting of Lori Coulson, Tom Cigolle, Kathy Sanders, Cathy Sanderson, Ping Pirrung and Phil Fullam will start working with the new program to do some testing before reporting to us at the ACOD. Once this Paragon program is completed, Cathy Sanderson will be able to move the efforts of the IT committee forward to redesign the website. I have talked to her and committee members about the website and they have a lot of great ideas on how to move forward.

5

I would like to take time to thank one of our unsung heroes, Sean McMichael. Thank you so much for all of your years as the ASFA Treasurer. We all appreciate what you do for us year after year with very little recognition. We do appreciate the stability that you bring to ASFA. Again, for all of your work we Thank You! I have many goals for 2020

o Facebook: Under the guidance of Trisha Borland and Kathy Sanders ASFA’s Facebook page is much more active

this year than in the past. We need everyone helping to post photos of hounds and wins. Audrey Silverstein has

just been added as a moderator for the page.

o 50th Anniversary: We have a Task Force in place to plan our 50th anniversary in 2022 with Kathy Nelson as the

chair. Some of the things that need to be decided this year are where to have the 50th year ACOD and the 50th

anniversary II.

• Where to hold the ACOD: My thought would be possibly New Orleans or Las Vegas. I had great times at those

locations. Cleveland was good too; I enjoyed having dinner at the horse track.

• Where to hold the II. Muncie, Indiana because it has the best fields I have ever seen. The two II’s we have

held there have been great successes.

• A design for a 50th anniversary pin.

• A fifty-year anniversary book. A budget and editor need to be worked out.

o Have parent clubs become more involved in ASFA.

o Keeping club delegates informed of the business of the board

o Getting the fancy more involved in everything ASFA does and our decisions and ideas. The survey on ideas was a

great success.

Long term goals o Team Coursing: Discussing this sounds like fun.

o Fast tracking good ideas

o Revenue ideas beyond the field trials

o Amnesty to bring back clubs that have dropped out of ASFA in the last five years.

o Sponsors for the II and Regional Invitationals

o 100% regionals in 2020. Please help your RD accomplish this.

o All Committee Reports be on a regular basis and published in the Communiqué.

o Everyone having an opportunity to receive the Communiqué.

o Updates for all committees to be submitted in September.

o Follow up on the last survey that Thomas Christ sent out for us.

o Hounds to have a grace period after an owner’s records show their hound has completed its FCh title before the

hound is entered in the FCh stake so as not to lose points.

If you have skills that could help with any of these and a desire to help ASFA with any of these endeavors, please tell me.

([email protected]) 2020 will be an exciting year for our ASFA. I would like everyone to join in and become part of this

excitement.

The ASFA National Greyhound Specialty is being hosted by the Southeastern Greyhound Club on November 14, 2020 at Bouckaert Farm, Fairburn, Georgia. The field on which this Specialty will be held is a 50+ acre hayfield with sandy loam/river bottom-type footing which is in the interior of the 8,000 acre Bouckaert Farm. Shade and cool-down water are available.

Singles, Breeder and Kennel Stakes will be offered. Both perpetual and keeper trophies will be offered for all stakes except Breeder and Kennel Stakes (ribbons offered for those stakes). Additional activities will include a conformation competition during the mid-day break. A catalog of entries will be published. Commemorative lapel pins will be

6

provided to each owner and/or handler entering a Greyhound in the lure coursing trial or the conformation competition. We look forward to seeing your Greyhounds running in this prestigious, long running event and become a part of ASFA history.

Plan on attending the 2020 ASFA ACOD in Tulsa, OK this year. There will be many important items to vote on including the officers for the next two years. Some of the things that will be coming up for a vote are:

• Eliminating Limited Breeds and have them move the Provisional Status therefore they can accumulate points

towards titles that will be awarded when the breed is approved.

• Rule changes to go into effect August 1 of the year that it is voted in. That change will make it match with the

Constitution change that we approved at the 2019 ACOD.

• Divide protest so that it will explain protests against a judge’s decision in one section and protest against a rule

violation in another section.

• Approval of changes to Article VIII of the Constitution, Experimental Programs, to make the timing more realistic.

We found this out with the new LCI program that we are working on.

To see all the proposed rules and constitution changes being proposed, be sure to read the full REC and CRC reports that will be sent to club delegates shortly. Hope to see everyone at the 2020 ACOD in Tulsa, OK Dean Wright

DEAN WRIGHT Nominee for ASFA President 2020

I have enjoyed working with everyone for the last two years as your President. Together we accomplished a lot, but not alone. I received a great deal of help from many. Greg Breitbach, Phil Fullam, Ping Pirrung, Holly Hamilton, Tom Cigolle, all of the Regional Directors, Russ and Vickie Jacobs, Vicki Fagre-Stroetz, Kathy Nelson, and many others.

Thank you to everyone for working for our ASFA. I look forward to being elected and working with everyone for another two years.

In 1967 I purchased my first two Ibizan Hounds and, with my devotion to the breed, I was elected President of the Ibizan Hound Club of the United States in 1974. I immediately went to work to show everyone that Ibizan Hounds were not a rare breed, but they were in fact a sighthound. Subsequently, Ibizan Hounds were recognized by ASFA in 1976 and by the AKC in 1979.

My passion for lure coursing began when I took my Ibizan Hound “Flyer“ to a lure trial at the Harpling’s in Sandwich, Il. To witness when “Flyer” came alive at the sight of the lure moving across the ground, was the beginning of my desire to help all sighthounds have the opportunity to chase the lure. I am sure everyone remembers the first time they saw their hound chasing the lure, as though it was yesterday.

I have been actively involved in ASFA since 1976.

• As Regional Director (1979 – 1981, 1984 – 1987, 2007 – 2010 and 2015 to the present).

• As First Vice President with Presidents Leigh Littleton (1988 – 1991), Jeff Lipps (2010 - 2012), and Ping Pirrung (2012 - 2014).

• As President from 2017 and still serving.

• As a member of the Rules Evaluation Committee in its early years.

11

• 1n 1998 I developed and chaired the ASFA Hall of Fame for ASFA.

• As Chair of the committee to establish guidelines for all ASFA Offices and committees, which provides the successors to those positions with the appropriate guidance upon taking office.

• As Chair or Co-Chair of the IIs in 1979, 1985, 1991, 1999, 2008 and 2011.

• As the organizer of many Judges Seminars throughout the country. Attendees that started the judging process at one of these seminars include 7 of the 16 judges in Region 8.

• During my several terms as ASFA’s First Vice President I learned from the different management styles of three skilled Presidents. This experience, coupled with my passion for ASFA, my strong work ethic and excellent customer service rapport, makes me the best choice to lead the American Sighthound Field Association as President for the next two years.

If elected, I will work with the elected officers, the existing regional directors and all of the committee chairs to establish our ASFA as the premier lure coursing organization in the USA and Canada. I strongly believe in having our leadership establish goals for the year and working with them to achieve their goals.

MY MAIN GOALS FOR ASFA ARE:

• Establish and promote initiatives to increase entries,

• Help the existing committee with the implementation of the web-based records program,

• Help the current committee with updating the ASFA website,

• Continue to enhance communication between the board and the fancy through “THE COMMUNIQUE” and other means,

• Improve internal and external ASFA Customer Service.

AS ASFA’s PRESIDENT I WILL CONTINUE TO:

• Work from written goals and set priorities to provide the greatest benefit to ASFA.

• Work closely with the First and Second Vice Presidents to maintain balance and have them be a vital part of the team.

• Encourage feedback, including suggestions and ideas from clubs and members of the Fancy - without them, ASFA would not exist.

In short, “I will work to get things done.” I ask for your support, so that I might work with you to continue to improve our ASFA.

Thank you for your continued help and support,

Dean Wright.

12

Greg Breitbach First Vice President Nominee

I obtained my first Afghan Hound in 1975. While doing fun matches and obedience matches in 1976 I attended an event which had lure coursing demonstration. My dog saw that, tried to climb the fence to get into the course, took to it naturally when it was her turn, and hooked us right then and there.

Since then, I had Afghan Hounds until 2010. I expanded my breeds to include Pharaoh Hounds and Greyhounds. I had several dogs in the top 10 over the years and traveled to most of the country attending trials.

In 1992 I obtained my all-breed ASFA judges license.

I was Regional Director for Region 6 serving 2-1/2 terms. I was elected Second Vice-President in 2018. Later that year when illness fell on our CFO and there was a change, I moved up to First Vice-President.

In my roles on the ASFA Board I have served on and lead several committees including Field Trial Improvement, Judges, Long Range Planning, and the Experimental Program. I have pushed for paperwork reduction and several proposals on this topic were sent to the Rules Evaluation Committee to be presented at this ACoD. I have been very active in attempting to move ASFA forward at a faster rate than previously because I strongly feel that if we do not move ahead with new programs, we will become more stagnant and see entries continue to decrease.

My intention continuing as First Vice-President is to support and push the President of our organization to complete projects which benefit ASFA. I have been and will continue to be a sounding board for the other officers and all of the Regional Directors to promote new ideas. I believe we need to reduce the paperwork currently required and work towards getting back clubs which have left ASFA due to this. I travel around and listen to exhibitors so that I can bring back to the Board and committees ideas from a wide range.

13

Tom Cigolle Jr Second Vice President Nominee

It was the summer of 1982, and I was attending the Michigan Gazehound Association’s July 4th weekend trials in Lapeer MI (somewhere waaaaaaaaaaay back in a farmer’s field). It was in the upper 80s, raining, muddy, and it was my first ASFA field trial. Within an hour I was ready to pack up the car and go back home (did I mention I was camping?). I decided to make the best of it and sat near the coursing field where others had taken up station. As the day went on, I started to notice that a good portion of the sighthounds ran with incredible passion. By the end of the day, the sighthounds that were competing in BIF were displaying the most amazing passion I had ever seen or witnessed. The intensity in their eyes and their overall drive/enthusiasm astounded me. As everyone walked off the field from the last BIF run, I learned that we were done for the day. All of the sudden the rain, the mud, and the mosquitoes did not matter. I just wanted to see more sighthounds run! I would consider myself a Saluki person as I have owned and ran the breed almost from the start, but have also owned Afghan Hounds and Greyhounds. I have been active in the sport from the start and continue to be very active. My accomplishments over these 35 some years include: Experienced Field Trial Chairman, Field Trial Secretary, Lure Operator (received the Lure Coursing Judges Association Lure Operator of the Year award in 2009), Huntmaster, Field Clerk, and Paddock Master. I have been an All-Breed Licensed Judge since 1985, and in 1988 I was the first judge to judge over 1000 hounds. I have served on the ASFA Board as 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, and Region 6 Regional Director, and have only missed approximately 5 ACOD’s since my first one in 1984. I have also directly been a part of the planning for 4 ASFA International Invitationals (1986-FTS, 1992-FTS, 1996-CoFTS, 2011-CoFTC), along with numerous Regional Invitationals and local trials. By day, I am the Quality Assurance Manager for a manufacturing company with 12 diverse product lines/divisions. In that line of work, I review past histories of product performance, perform investigations as to why an issue is occurring, and take the lead on ensuring that proper actions are implemented and effective. I work with all of the various functions in the facility, and lead the facility from the standpoint of quality. Even though we have many challenges facing the ASFA, I believe our biggest challenge is reversing the trend of declining entries and people. We need to take initiatives that will spur the growth of both. I believe I have gained enough knowledge, skill, and experience to be an effective Second Vice President for the ASFA. I am honored to have been selected by the ASFA Nominating Committee for this important position.

14

Philip S Fullam Chief Financial Officer Nominee

I have been active in lure coursing since 1977. I gained my ASFA judging license in 1982, and was grandfathered in as an AKC judge. Several years ago, I started open field judging in New Mexico. I have held several AFSA judges seminars, and have also trained lure operators in several states. I was elected First VP of ASFA in 2016, and then moved over to the CFO position in 2018. I was elected President of Albuquerque Whippet Fanciers Association six years ago, and still hold that position. Professionally I am a licensed Professional Engineer (active licenses in Ohio and New Mexico). My day job, newly started after being recalled from retirement, is General Manager of a manufacturing facility in Albuquerque. Additionally, I continue to do engineering consulting, and just recently formed a new business to design and manufacture trophies. (See our work from the BOB and Gillette Stake trophies from the 2017 & 2018 IIs). My management philosophy is to listen first, understand, define the problem, and then seek a solution. As a design engineer I try to avoid the pitfall of a solution in search of a problem. If I assume a solution before I define the problem, I will likely exclude consideration of potentially better approaches. Many times, when I am working with a client, I have to refocus them on defining what the real problem is, not what they want the solution to be. This is a delicate task, as you don’t want to offend the customer (who pays the bills) but at the same time I will not sell them a solution that won’t work. ASFA is facing some serious problems over the next several years. We need to clearly state what the core problems are, and seek extraordinary solutions so that this very valuable organization can succeed for the long term. We have the talent, we have the desire, and we need the leadership to make hard and good decisions. Education 1971 Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. Bachelor of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Machine Design 1979 University of New Mexico, Robert O. Anderson School of Management, MBA Program 3.2 GPA

15

Ping Pirrung Recording Secretary Nominee

I am very honored to accept the nomination for Recording Secretary of ASFA. I view this position on the ASFA Board as one of great responsibility. I have experienced Joe Shoemakers incredible job as ASFA’s Recording Secretary, and his have been big shoes to fill. However, with his willingness to share his experience and knowledge, I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to follow in his footsteps. My first two years have been a learning experience so, if elected, I can continue more easily. I have been involved with lure coursing and ASFA since I first learned of lure coursing around 1975. This is a sport dear to my heart for so many reasons. I meet amazing people and dogs and spend a weekend outside enjoying the company of like-minded people and their hounds. One could easily say that my life has gone to the dogs . . . Or has always been there. At no time during my life have I been without a dog of some sort. My family always had at least two dogs and at times even got up to my Dad’s

imposed limit of 4. Even in college, my dog accompanied me to every class as well as across the stage to accept my diploma. Borzoi were my beginning with sighthounds. My then husband and I showed and bred Borzoi. Lure coursing was a natural fit, as being outside and active gives me great joy. The athleticism along with the pure joy of watching the dogs do what they were bred to do, is an indescribable thrill. We had two daughters who also went with us to almost all field trials with my second daughter practically being born on a coursing field. At times I even ventured off coursing on my own. There are some that remember me slipping dogs with a baby in a backpack and a camera in my other hand. In 1985, when the girls were old enough to be on their own during a trial, I became a judge. This has afforded me the opportunity to see dogs lure course all over the county at the same time experiencing some amazing runs. Whippets came into my life when my daughters were young. Since the late 1980’s I have had only Whippets. I am now remarried to Dennis McCann who enjoys our growing family at Labyrinth Whippets. At this point we have 5 living at our house and enjoy every minute of it. During the spring and fall almost every weekend is taken up with lure coursing or open field coursing. During the week I spend a lot of time with the dogs either biking, walking or working on their skills. I have been the Field Trial Secretary for several II’s, the first being in the early ‘80s. At most field trials I love to help out in whatever way I can; I prefer to be doing something rather than sitting around waiting for our dogs turn to run. I am a founding member of Tri-State Sighthound Club in Western PA and have been President of the club for several years. I was elected as the

16

Corresponding Secretary of the ASFA in 2008 and reelected in 2010, which was a joy as it put me in touch with so many of the fancy all over the country. I was elected President of ASFA in 2012 and reelected in 2014. In 2017 I was elected Recording Secretary. I have embraced the challenges and enjoyed the work of maintaining ASFA as the premier lure coursing organization. Every weekend we have many opportunities to attend a myriad of dog related activities. The challenge is to keep ASFA lure coursing a prominent choice. With your passion and contributions,

together we can position and strengthen ASFA for the future.

Holly Hamilton Corresponding Secretary Nominee

My name is Holly Hamilton. I've been involved with sighthounds since 1997 when Basenji FC Chujo's Aramis Nick, FCH, VFC, VLCM, RN came into my life. Nick allowed me to meet members of the Evergreen Basenji Club and eventually, become a

member. Nick also introduced me to lure coursing and I immediately came to love the sport. In 1997 I became an owner of a wire haired Ibizan named Ch Gryphons Winchester Cathedral, FCH and have had several other Ibizans since then. I have been actively involved with lure coursing with both Ibizans and Basenjis as I have participated as FTS and FTC at national trials. I am a member of the BCOA as well as IHCUS.I am both an AKC and ASFA lure coursing judge. Monday through Friday I teach high school English.

Report of the

Experimental Program Committee By Greg Breitbach, Committee Chair Committee Members: Phil Fullam, Sally MacDowell, Dean Wright, Vicki Fagre-Stroetz

The committee followed the progress of the Lure Chasing Instinct program through the year. We continually received feedback as clubs hosted trials and answered questions raised.

We are happy to report that the first year saw a dramatic start, with 14 clubs hosting 53 trials, and 289 entries of 126 new dogs in the LCI program. This program brought $1,156.00 into the ASFA treasury. There were 15 LCI titles earned. LCI is the fourth largest entry behind Singles, Whippets and Ridgebacks with 7.34% of total dogs from all of ASFA breeds/stakes.

The Lure Chasing Instinct Program ran as an experimental program in 2019. Due to the way the ASFA Constitution was originally written regarding experimental programs, the LCI Program expired on December 31, 2019.

One year of the program had positive results for ASFA, clubs, and exhibitors. Entries were up because of the new dogs brought into the organization. Here is a breakdown of total entries for each breed, the number one of each breed top 20 points and the percentage of entries for each breed.

The table on the right shows the total number of entries for each breed/stake and the percentage that each of those totals represents for ASFA in 2019.

The table also shows that LCI entries were the fourth highest of all the “breeds”, with 121 new dogs running in our trials.

A total of 11 clubs hosted the experimental program in 2019. Below are some comments from Field Trial Secretaries regarding the events:

“We are thoroughly enjoying this new LCI program at NAA.”

“The folks who enter - we have 3 regulars - like the idea of being judged and earning titles. They have jumped in and are volunteering. Indeed, our best new field clerk is an LCI exhibitor and another LCI exhibitor is helping us with the paddock”

“The folks that are entering our events are spreading the word, so we hope to have more entering next year. And these folks are most appreciative.”

“I think that all the new exhibitors liked the events and responded well. We gained new exhibitors as the season went on. All our LCI exhibitors are committed dog-people and committed dog-sport-people.”

“Our exhibitors have become field clerks and paddock masters. They have helped with inspection.”

With the positive response from exhibitors and workers, the program is off to a good start.

Because of a glitch in the ASFA Constitution terminating an experimental program after one year, the experimental committee has during the past year incorporated feedback from exhibitors and clubs into an expanded set of rules for the program. We have asked and the Board has approved implementing the expanded program so that we can have two points of data prior to asking for full recognition at the 2021 ACoD.

Major changes include:

• Specifying that the program is for non-purebred sighthounds

• Defining “small” in detail

• Defining that when the title of LCC is obtained, the dog runs in “senior” stake

• Adding a class for veterans

• Adding a class for mixed breeds with sighthound in their background

• Adding that all placement ties will be run off or forfeited as in Singles

• Changing the title from Lure Chasing Junior to Lure Chasing Champion

Based on comments and feedback, we are looking into the possibility of non-sighthound breeds being able to run in trios.

We are also looking into a new sighthound option.

LCI

Why We Run Our Dogs by Chuck Erato

Our dogs do not understand the purpose of a placement; feel the joy of getting a ribbon, or feel the pride in a new title. Although all of those things mean something to my wife Janine and me, they are not the reasons why we participate in Lure Chasing Instinct (LCI). Espresso (Essie) chases after that bag with speed not typical of a Cane Corso, and Java barks at it almost as if he is demanding that it stop. Since Espresso and Java love to run, we participated in Fast Cats and Coursing Ability until we found LCI. The LCI program allows our dogs to be evaluated not only as a pass/fail but in enthusiasm, follow, speed, agility, and endurance. This has been immensely beneficial.

The dogs’ enthusiasm shows in their joy and determination to catch the lure. Their follow of the lure and not racing the lure shows their focus and intent to get the lure. The dogs’ speed and acceleration has improved since they started competing in LCI. Their ability to turn and move quickly and recover when they lose the lure has gotten better as their agility has improved. The dogs’ endurance develops the more they run the varying courses provided. We see the benefits on and off the field.

LCI is the primary tool we have been using for exercise. We were hoping that it would help Java develop the muscle needed in Conformation. As a class dog with little experience in the ring, we were surprised that he recently took Best of Breed against champion dogs. The judge stated that Java has the correct development for his size, is balanced, and moves correctly. It is not the first time we have heard this from a judge. We feel a large part of that balance in the ring has come from competing in LCI. The exercise is keeping them fit and happy. It’s true that we all want to win. But, a dog doesn’t have to be the fastest to win or to just stay on the lure with incredible follow. Rather, a dog has to be balanced by meeting the criteria in all five areas. LCI gives our dogs a long distance run to work on all those skills.

2019 SURVEY RESULTS Thomas Christ

How Would You Change

ASFA?

On September 30, 2019 Thomas Christ sent out his latest survey. He asked: If the ASFA Genie could grant you one wish to change or implement a new idea into the ASFA organization, what would it be?

We received 96 responses. Ping Pirrung edited them and listed them by category and combined those with the same thought. As you read thru these, you will see some great ideas. Thank you to everyone who responded. It was over whelming.

ADMINISTRATIVE / GENERAL I would love more trials offered in my region and better leadership. I have not heard from the new president since the last one quit. Look in the Communique or get in touch with the ASFA President. Lure operator training and certification. This has been talked about a lot, however there are some serious liability concerns. More trials in northern California! Starting a new club would be a good way to solve this.

Move club dues to be due on March 1 each year. Have the II in Muncie every year. This is currently under consideration. Add a membership card to raise funds, membership privileges tied to co-ops savings with relationships with corporations, sponsorships. i.e. Chewy, Petsmart / Banfield to name a few. I'm pretty happy with ASFA. More Ontario trials would be nice. There are only a couple/year within a reasonable drive. I'm guessing the only way that would happen is if there were other Canadian clubs willing to host. You know the answer. Get out of Canada Honestly, I just want ASFA events to be better and more widely promoted and advertised, so more people know they are happening. This would have to include being broadly promoted on Facebook and other social media. Not try to do everything that AKC is doing, concentrate on sighthounds and lure coursing

21

Work together and combine ASFA and AKC into one running organization, where ASFA titles are recognized and have the ability to have them added to the hound’s record as it does for several other groups with hunting titles, temperament tests, dock diving titles, and more. The fragmentation that exists dilutes the efforts of both organizations. We have too few people and trials now to split. It would give us all more trials to pick from and hopefully increase entries for everyone. Agreed, we have not been able to get together as of yet. Better communication between the Board and all of us. We never get any news of actions. Committee chairs don't even get news from the board. This is being worked on for next year. Get some of the clubs that left ASFA (mainly in Texas) to come back and start ASFA coursing again. Membership and the RD are looking into that. Make changes faster Institute true proxy voting on issues brought to the floor at ACOD. Clubs unable to send a delegate could designate an attendee as voting on its behalf IN ADDITION TO THAT ATTENDEE VOTING FOR HIS/HER OWN CLUB. Only one vote per club using a proxy; if the club wants two votes it must send two delegates. Delegates acting as a proxy would of course need documentation of their status from the granting club.

FIELD TRIALS Dogs winning BIF receive the # of points equal to the points earned, in that trial, by a dog, from all breeds competing in BIF, that is defeated. This will be voted on at the 2019 ACOD; come and vote! Grade the dogs after the first course, so that in the second course grade A, B & C dogs run with their equals. Draw the finals in descending order by prelim score, so that the best dogs run together. Give the host clubs the option of using the brace elimination running format with point tally scoring. Letting all sighthound breeds earn singles titles Online registration and payment. Great idea, this will be passed along to the IT Committee. Eliminate 'pop up' breed specialties. There should be 3 months notice to give the entire country good time to plan to be at a specialty. I would like to see dogs and owners, who have to run in Singles stake, receive the same respect as regular classes. High Scoring Single should receive a rosette just like breed winners. Also, if there is a tie, the dogs should get to run again and not be forced to either forfeit or lose to the toss of the coin. Those who run in singles pay the same entry fees and I believe are entitled to the same respect and consideration as the other classes. Many clubs do have rosettes for High Scoring Single and ties, if not forfeited, ties are run off. Singles to have Veterans, with a Veterans Singles title. This is in the works. Allow combining points for the total entry from all stakes for the BOB winner. So, if there are 5 FCH and 3 Vets and 2 Open and the open dog gets BOB, he should get points for 10 dogs (40 points), not 5 (20 points).

22

Go back to drag lure coursing. A major line injury expense or ending a dog’s career isn't worth the risk. Eliminate continuous loop. Clubs are able to do that now.

Require all dogs be muzzled for competition. Currently, that is up to the club.

Give limited breeds, with actively competing members, full status and recognition. Our limited dogs are sighthounds and should be grated the ability to title and compete for Best in Field etc. Non sighthounds can get coursing titles and our actual sighthounds cannot. The owners of limited dogs often have more than one breed of sighthound (whippets, etc.) to help increase numbers. We’re tired of paying full fees for no recognition of our dog’s ability

Start giving cash to winners. Worth a try. We can do it now but not over entry fee.

Allow 'mixed' stakes for hounds with similar coursing style when there are 3 or less running in each breed. Great idea – we are working on it

Run braces only. Clubs can do that now.

Lurcher division. This is being talked about.

More runs

It seems that any hound that runs can earn a FCh. Change it because as it stands it is a useless title.

Club houses at trial sites to make it more comfortable for all.

JUDGES Wave the judging requirements for AKC judges that have been judging for 10 years or more. Accept all AKC judges after passing an open book test to extend the pool. Judges Licensing committee is working on that.

Amend the judges’ criteria; we are losing judges and not attracting enough new judges.

Better judging. Don't let judges sit during the trial - they obviously cannot see the whole course. Ridiculous. I am 6' tall standing next to judge and I had not 100% visibility. I would say no judges with a BMI > 25 would be a good start.

LCI Run offs for ties in LCI stakes. To be voted on at the 2020 ACoD

To have an LCI Veterans stake which dogs could run 2/3 or 3/4 of their original designated stake. This will be coming soon.

To develop a form of coursing for non-purebreds that takes into account body type and height, as opposed to separating by breed. Implement a tiered approach to titles starting off with simple runs, maybe straightaways, progressing to more difficult courses and distances. Most likely to come from the LCI Committee

NEWCOMERS

Education / help / encourage / mentor the newbies. Possibly a seminar to include training information and opportunities on how to start a new hound, as well as volunteer opportunities such

23

as huntmaster, field clerk, etc. We need them! Talk it up, ask groups to send emails. Get them out on the fields; have a class for Galgos and other sighthounds who are newer. For clubs to have practice / fun run days for newcomers to learn about coursing and try out puppies and new dogs. There often doesn’t seem to be enough time to do so after trials. Great idea. Some clubs do, some don’t. Should advertise in the Communiqué for clubs that do. A formal program for orienting newcomers at trials. It's daunting to enter a trial for the first time and have no idea what you're doing, no acquaintances or friends to orient you, and no help, and even hostility, from "seasoned" fanciers who have little patience for, or interest in, newcomers. Some experienced fanciers who don't feel comfortable with other volunteer positions at trials may be interested in helping newcomers through such a program.

RECORDS / WEBSITE Make life easy on Field Trial Secretaries. Simplify and streamline the process, keep the FTS happy, because when they are happy, it makes for better events. ASFA is losing events to AKC in my region all the time because of the onerous paperwork. We are working on this. Update your antiquated website. If it was easy for someone to see their dog’s points and trial results, more people would be interested in attending ASFA field trials holding trials/volunteering for FTS (right now AKC wins as easiest trials too hold/report) A paperless online system to submit entries, submit results from judges to the FTS, submit the FTS "paperwork" and display trial results to the owners online quickly and easily. Online entries, better website This is in progress

RULE BOOK / CONSTITUTION Grant all of the Limited breeds full recognition and do away with the concept of Limited breeds entirely. Just recognize all the sighthound breeds and stop this nonsense about making them jump through hoops to participate. Provisional breeds recognition. The requirements may be lowered, but those breeds also need to enter more. Change the bylaws so changes/improvements can be implemented in months, not years. ASFA is not responsive, much less nimble. This is being looked in to. I would change the rule for calling a no course. "Any dog that completes a course must receive a score for that course”. A new and clearer rule book.

MISCELLANEOUS I love ASFA....so much prefer it to the AKC rules regulations, etc. Requirements for a judging license are soooo superior

Dean knows more about ASFA than anyone I know. I trust any suggestions he may have More African Soft Furred Adaptations.

The Ibizan Hound in Lure Coursing by Dean Wright

JUDGES! ARE YOU READY? LURE OPERATOR! ARE YOU READY? HANDLERS! ARE YOU READY? TALLY-HO!!!!

Slip leads released and two white Ibizan Hounds were off – muscles straining, and barking with every stride as they pursued the artificial lure moving swiftly across the ground. In less than 60 seconds it was over. This was the scene at Vale Vue Kennels, May 15, 1976, as the first two Ibizan Hounds competed for ASFA points. The two hounds were “Tana” and “Flyer.” The judges were Polly Clements and Ed Filletti. When the scores were posted after the final run, Tana was first place and Best of Breed, earning 12 points toward her ASFA Field Championship. A Greyhound in the mixed stake was second and Flyer was third, obtaining 6 ASFA points. This was the beginning for the Ibizan Hound in lure coursing. Not many generations earlier, they had come from the island of Ibiza to the United States. Lure coursing was to be a sport they would enjoy and do well at. They love it, adapt to it, and have achieved great accomplishments down through the years. In the next few paragraphs, I will attempt to tell you the story of the Ibizan Hound in lure coursing as I have seen it unfold. And I was there on that day in 1976 when it all began. The Ibizan Hound came, most frequently, from an island in the Mediterranean, off the eastern coast of Spain, called Ibiza. They were the only breed of dogs on the island for centuries. They were used by the farmers for providing food for the table. The Ibizan hunted rabbits in packs of seven or eight hounds. Correspondence received from farmers on the island presented several unique observations. One was that the packs seldom contained more than one bitch, which they considered to be quarrelsome and not good hunters. Another was that the Ibizan hunted “in tongue.” We did not realize what that meant until our first trial when they barked during the entire course. In the open field, they only bark if they are sighted and chasing game. When open field coursing with other breeds, the other breeds understand the Ibizan bark, and head to where the action is. Even in lure coursing, if they become unsighted, they stop barking. As soon as they resight, they resume their “tongue.” The breed was recognized by ASFA in 1976, and all the early coursing hounds barked as they chased the lure. Many of the present coursers do not bark. No one knows the reason for this, unless, the coursing instinct is slowly being bred out. Lure coursing was instrumental in getting the breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Ibizan Hound went into the AKC Miscellaneous Class in 1967. They were shown at AKC shows and rare breed matches. In 1976 they broke away from the rare breeds, and went about life as sighthounds. Enthusiastic Ibizan owners hosted sighthound matches and took their hounds to field trials. In 1978 the Ibizan Hound was recognized by the AKC. In January of 1979, they were eligible to enter shows as a single recognized breed in the Hound Group.

36

Sun King Eterna of Treybeau became the first Ibizan Hound ASFA Field Champion in 1976. And in January 1979, in Florida, Eterna finished her AKC breed Championship in three straight shows, becoming Ch Sun King Eterna of Treybeau, FCh – the first AKC breed Champion. In lure coursing the Ibizan’s strongest category should be endurance. They hunted on the island for eight to ten hours at a time. They needed to be able to reach a gallop that conserved energy, while allowing them to cover ground. The Ibizan should be in the class with the Saluki as one of the best endurance breeds. They should possess medium speed and agility, speed in line with the Afghan, but not as agile. Their speed and agility are greatly influenced by their enthusiasm to chase and capture the lure. The Ibizan possesses great enthusiasm, so a very high percentage will lure course. The Ibizan temperament is very stable. And each year there are very few Ibizans dismissed or disqualified at trials. The degree of follow varies between individual hounds. The hounds that look at coursing as a game, and enjoy the game, will have good follow for a long time. The hounds that are serious about lure coursing, and really want to capture the lure, will figure it out very quickly; and will suffer in the “follow” category. Long courses would favor the Ibizan in competition with other breeds. Within the breed, there is not any type of course that would be better for the breed than another. Long straight-aways favor the fast hounds in our breed. Short courses with tight turns favor the slow, more agile hounds. Ibizan Hounds run the gamut from fast to slow, agile to klutzy, and followers to cutters. The one thing they all possess is great enthusiasm for the sport. The Ibizan is a tough breed, and is not affected by heat or cold as much as other breeds. Their pads hold up well on dry, hard or rocky surfaces. They are suited for all types of terrain. When picking an Ibizan Hound puppy for lure coursing, the first thing to look at is the pedigree. Did the sire and dam course well? The second would be soundness. Soundness will enable the hound to have a long coursing career. Third, look for the puppy that likes to play and has a long attention span. This is determined by placing a towel or garbage bag in with the puppies. Watch to see which puppy is still playing after the rest have become bored with this new activity. The Ibizan Hound happens to be one of the breeds that has many breed Champions that are also good lure coursers. To put this in perspective, the Ibizan hound has a breed standard that allows it to win on the coursing field, as well as in the show ring. Following are the names of some of the people that have helped promote the Ibizan Hound and are responsible for it being where it is today.

Col. Seoane brought the first Ibizan into the United States. Together with his wife, Rhoda Seoane, they started the Ibizan Hound Club of the United States in Rhode Island. Bobbi Preux was one of the first breeders of Ibizans in this country. She lived in Washington D.C. and Maine. Peg Ozlek came from Afghans to Ibizans and wrote monthly articles on the Ibizan for Dog World magazine. Her Ibizan was on the cover of one of the issues of dog world. Ron and Judy Bauer were the first editors of the club newsletter.

37

Dean Wright was President of the Ibizan Hound Club of the U.S. from 1972 until 1980, during which time the Ibizan was recognized by AKC. Susan Stafford petitioned the 1976 ASFA convention and got Ibizans recognized by ASFA. Nan Kilgore Little is a sighthound artist who bred, showed and coursed Ibizans from the early days to the present.

Some of the Ibizan Hounds that have helped to promote the breed are the following. SONNET and SERANADE – two of the beginning coursing Ibizans from California. ILLYA – ran the best individual course I have ever seen by an Ibizan Hound. She was from Colorado and ran in the 1976 Grand National. TANA – the first Ibizan Hound to run in an ASFA trial for points. ETERNA- the first Ibizan Hound Field Champion. FLYER – the first Ibizan Hound LCM, and #1 Ibizan Hound in 1976, the first year of competition. EAGLE - #1 Ibizan Hound 1978 and 1979. The best coursing Ibizan that I have seen, but had a short career. FIRE – a son of Eterna. He is presently the #1 all-time Ibizan Hound, and has been in the Top Ten for ten years. He has also sired at least ten Field Champion and LCM titlists. ATAIR – another son of Eterna. The #1 Ibizan Hound for two years, and foundation for Chris Allen’s breeding. He sired several Field Champion and LCM titlists. JOBI – one of the fastest Ibizans to lure course. #1 in 1988, and winner of the first Gillette stake in 1990. Still strong at this time.

There have been many other outstanding Ibizans, but these stand out in my memory. Though there are no individual incidents with Ibizans that are particularly funny, my wife and I have changed the breed’s name to “Ibizan Clowns”. We are convinced that they purposely do things to make you laugh; whether at home stalking a frog, or at a trial with all three going in different directions – and none going behind the lure. The Ibizan Hound is my breed. We have grown together in this country. I have learned more from them than I could ever explain. I see clouds going across the sky and picture them as Flyer, Eagle, Melvin or Atair chasing something across the sky. I will never forget their pure love for the sport that they became a part of history in, LURE COURSING.
