REFLECTIONS | RÉFLEXIONSCharlie Ross and I have been dreaming about this concert for a long time. Ever since I was a kid watching Lost in Space on TV, the music of John Williams has seeped so deeply into my head I sometimes catch myself pretending it was composed just for me. Charlie, meanwhile, has turned his love for Star Wars into a one-man tour de force that has been dazzling audiences around the world for over fifteen years. Placing Charlie’s theatrics beside this music marks a very special occasion indeed. So, May the Force Be With You always.
Charlie Ross et moi rêvions depuis longtemps d’un tel concert. Depuis l’époque où, enfant, j’écoutais Perdus dans l’espace à la télévision, la musique de John Williams ne m’a jamais quitté, à tel point que j’aime parfois m’imaginer qu’il l’a composée juste pour moi. Charlie, lui, a transformé son amour pour cette saga galactique en un magistral spectacle solo qui fait la joie des publics d’ici et d’ailleurs depuis 15 ans. La rencontre sur scène de ce comédien extraordinaire et de cette musique est vraiment un moment à savourer. Que la Force soit toujours avec vous. — MIKE PETERSEN
“A dream come true!” That’s what I say about conducting the NAC Orchestra and The Music of Star Wars! Growing up in rural Indiana, I experienced orchestral music via conductor Erich Kunzel, a family friend and mentor. When I thought of film music, it was John Williams, Star Wars and the Cincinnati Pops. Movie music can definitely make your heart beat faster or make you cry! The beeps and clicks of video games are long gone, as today’s composers, such as Gordy Haab, Kyle Newmaster and Austin Wintory (Grammy-nominated for Journey), write lush, dramatic choral-orchestral scores. Let’s see if tonight’s music can give you goosebumps and tears.
Diriger l’Orchestre du CNA et La musique de Star Wars, c’est un rêve devenu réalité. J’ai grandi dans la campagne de l’Indiana, et c’est le chef d’orchestre Erich Kunzel, un ami de ma famille et un mentor, qui m’a initié à la musique orchestrale. Pour moi « musique de film » rimait alors avec John Williams, Star Wars et le Cincinnati Pops Orchestra! La musique de film peut vraiment vous toucher droit au cœur, voire vous faire pleurer. Même du côté des jeux vidéo, les clics et les bips d’antan ont cédé la place à de riches partitions orchestrales-chorales aux accents dramatiques signées par des compositeurs comme Gordy Haab, Kyle Newmaster et Austin Wintory (finaliste aux Grammy pour Journey). La musique de ce soir saura-t-elle vous donner la chair de poule et vous mettre les larmes aux yeux? — ERIK OCHSNER

Erik Ochsner’s versatility as a conductor
has stretched across a broad range of
repertoire: from conducting as few as five
performers in contemporary and modern
works, to leading 300 performers in “live to
projection” concerts of films such as Bugs
Bunny at the Symphony, Frozen, Pirates of
the Caribbean and Star Trek (2009). He led
the NAC Orchestra in their performance
of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the
Ring in 2012.
Equally comfortable on the concert
stage or leading opera, oratorio and multi-
media performances, he has appeared with
orchestras around the globe, from Beijing
and Shanghai to Mexico City and Reykjavik.
As Music Director and founder of the
SONOS Chamber Orchestra, he leads
concerts in not-often-heard repertoire,
frequently featuring Scandinavian com-
posers. His first CD, An Orchestral Journey
(Naxos) with music by composer Brian
Grundstrom, came out in August 2016.
Formerly the assistant conductor to
both Tan Dun and Robert Spano, Ochsner
graduated from Dartmouth College and
studied at the Pierre Monteux School for
Conductors. He has worked with such
conductors as Marin Alsop, Charles Bruck,
Erich Kunzel, Helmut Rilling and Robert
Spano. He resides in New York City, where
his hobbies include computers, traveling,
wine and collecting requiem recordings.

Canadian actor Charles Ross has a pretty
sweet job as a professional Geek.
As writer and performer of his trilogy
of trilogies — One Man Star Wars, One Man
Lord of the Rings and One Man Dark Knight;
A Batman Parody — he has toured the
globe since 2002, delighting audiences
with his unique and frenetic solo shows.
Born in northern British Columbia,
Charlie Ross spent his early years with his
head in the clouds, longing for galaxies far,
far away. It was the discovery of a passion
for acting (and a move to more southerly
climes) that brought this geek-at-heart
back to earth.
At university, Ross formed a friendship
and collaborative partnership with actor/
writer/director TJ Dawe. TJ has directed
five of Ross’s solo shows — the first being
the wildly successful One Man Star Wars.
After sold-out tours of North America’s
Fringe theatre festivals, One Man Star Wars
and One Man LOTR have taken on a life of
their own. The worldwide love affair with
these trilogies is phenomenal — and it’s
been a dream come true, for Charlie Ross,
to celebrate that love with generations of
fans around the world.

du Nord, One Man Star Wars et One

Émilie Fournier started her career as a
model. While working in that field, she
spent time on several film sets, where
she discovered her passion for media and
communications.
After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in
public communications, she freelanced
(2008–10) for Québec Scope Magazine’s
website, then worked as an event planner in
the fashion and music industries. In 2009,
she moved to Montreal to study at the
Promedia radio and television school.
Motivated, inquisitive and determined,
Ms. Fournier landed a job at TVA in 2010
as one of the channel’s new faces and host
of the Hors circuit video clips; she also
became a reporter and blogger for
Montreal Fashion Week. In 2011, she
co-hosted Les auditions de Star Académie
en prolongation, and in 2012, she hosted
Star Académie en prolongation. Also that
same year she became a social media
reporter for Salut, Bonjour! Week-end; and
in 2013 was assigned to arts news, followed
by the show’s fashion and beauty beat.
Émilie Fournier has also worked in
radio as a reporter for Rouge FM. Last
year she was appointed producer of web
content and new media at Productions
Déferlantes, one of Quebec’s most dynamic
media production companies.
Émilie Fournier a commencé sa carrière
comme mannequin. Pendant cette
période, elle visite des plateaux de

Elle obtient un baccalauréat en
communication publique et devient pigiste

En 2009, elle s’installe à Montréal et fait
son cours en radio et télévision à l’école

Motivée, curieuse et déterminée, Émilie
atterrit à TVA en 2010 comme l’un des
nouveaux visages de la station et anime
les capsules Hors circuit. Elle devient
reporter et blogueuse pour la Semaine
de la Semaine de la mode de Montréal. En
2011, elle coanime Les auditions de Star
Académie en prolongation et devient, en
2012, l’animatrice de Star Académie en
prolongation. Émilie entre ensuite comme
chroniqueuse sur les médias sociaux à
Salut, Bonjour! Week-end. En 2013, elle y
commente les actualités culturelles et, plus
tard, devient collaboratrice mode et beauté.
Émilie a aussi fait un saut à la radio
comme chroniqueuse à Rouge FM. L’année
dernière, elle a en outre été nommée
productrice du contenu Web et des nouveaux
médias chez Productions Déferlantes, un
des producteurs les plus dynamiques dans
le domaine des médias au Québec.

Mike Petersen is a writer, director, actor
and puppeteer who has performed across
Canada, throughout the U.S., and in Japan,
Australia, Nigeria, Britain, Singapore and
Poland with such companies as Mermaid
Theatre, Neptune Theatre, Festival
Antigonish, Kaleidoscope Theatre, the
Edinburgh Puppet Company, Poland’s
Teatr Arlekin and Theatre Beyond Words.
Film and television credits include Fraggle
Rock, Labyrinth, Black Harbour, Emily of
New Moon and the award-winning CBC
pre-school series The Mighty Jungle. He
created and performed in As You Puppet
at Young People’s Theatre (YPT) in Toronto,
and also played host “Papageno” in
Music & Truffles, a series of classical
music concerts for children produced by
Anton Kuerti.
In his developing role as a teacher
of puppetry, Mike Petersen has worked
alongside Graham Whitehead at Mermaid
Theatre, Allen MacInnis at YPT, Lynda
Hill at Theatre Direct, Eric Woolfe at
Eldritch Theatre, Ann and David Powell at
Puppetmongers Theatre, Seanna Kennedy
at Lower Ossington Theatre, and Bruce
Dowe, director of the Canadian premiere of
Thank You For Being A Friend: The Ultimate
Golden Girls Experience.

Professor of voice and choral activities
at the University of Ottawa, Laurence
Ewashko is also artistic director of the
Ewashko Singers and regularly prepares
community choruses for performances
with the NAC Orchestra. This past season,
he commissioned Larysa Kuzmenko and
librettist Talia Zajac to write an oratorio,
The Golden Harvest, in celebration of
the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian
immigration to Canada. Winner of the
prestigious Leslie Bell Award for choral
conducting, Ewashko was music director
of the Cantata Singers for 17 years and
chorus master for Opera Lyra Ottawa for
27 years.

The Calixa Lavallée Ensemble is the
chamber choir of the University of
Ottawa’s School of Music. It is conducted
by Laurence Ewashko, accompanied
by pianist Aude Urbanic, and performs
regularly throughout the school year.
This season’s performances include a
choral concert dedicated to Canadian
composers and participation in the Ottawa
Symphony’s performance of Mahler’s
Resurrection Symphony.

CANTERBURY HIGH SCHOOL CHOIRJames Caswell music director/directeur musical
Canterbury High School is home to four
choral ensembles, and the singers for
tonight’s performance are drawn from
those ensembles. Under the direction of
James Caswell, the Canterbury ensembles
perform both at school and throughout
the community, with the singers taking
great pride in a collaborative spirit
and participating in a variety of joint
performances and workshops. The
singers, of varying ages, have enjoyed
being part of this collaboration with the
National Arts Centre.
La Canterbury High School compte quatre
ensembles choraux, et les chanteurs
réunis pour le concert de ce soir en sont
issus. Sous la direction de James Caswell,
les ensembles de l’école Canterbury
se produisent à l’école même et un peu

One of seven choirs at Ottawa’s De La
Salle High School, La Chorale De La Salle
won second prize at the 2008 and 2013
CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition
for Amateur Choirs. The choir performs a
wide range of music and takes particular
pride in offering their audiences Canadian
and French-Canadian content in their
performances. Music Director Robert
Filion has been involved in the creation
of new works by several Canadian
composers, including Stephen Hatfield,
Donald Patriquin, Laura Hawley and
Frédéric Lacroix.
La Chorale De La Salle, une des sept
chorales de l’École secondaire De La Salle
d’Ottawa, a remporté le deuxième prix
aux éditions 2008 et 2013 du Concours
national des chorales d’amateurs de
CBC/Radio-Canada. Elle embrasse un
vaste répertoire et s’enorgueillit tout
particulièrement de présenter à ses
auditoires des œuvres canadiennes et
canadiennes-francaises. Robert Filion
a collaboré à la création de pièces de
plusieurs compositeurs canadiens, dont

Glebe Collegiate has a thriving choral
program that is home to over one hundred
choir members. With such a large
community of singers to draw from, the
school is able to provide four choirs: a
treble ensemble, a men’s ensemble and
two ensembles of mixed voices. Each
group sings a varied repertoire of music
ranging from the eclectic to the traditional.
The program provides many choral
performance opportunities for students,
both within the school and also in the
greater community.
Le Glebe Collegiate Institute offre un
programme de chant choral florissant
qui compte plus d’une centaine de
choristes. Avec un bassin de chanteurs

mesure de présenter quatre chœurs

Since 1958, the Ottawa Children’s Choir
(OCC) has been dedicated to enriching
the lives of choristers, families and the
National Capital community through a
commitment to musical excellence and
the joy of singing. In September 2016,
the organization announced its newest
choir, the OCC Boys’ Choir. Led by Jamie
Loback, the choir is open to boys with
either changed or unchanged voices, and
gives them an opportunity to sing with
their peers. Each rehearsal concludes with
a game of soccer or hockey.
Depuis 1958, le Chœur d’enfants d’Ottawa
(Ottawa Children’s Choir — OCC) se
voue à enrichir la vie des choristes, de
leurs familles et de la capitale du pays en
faisant la promotion de l’excellence
musicale et du plaisir de chanter.
En septembre 2016, l’organisation a
annoncé la mise sur pied de son plus
récent ensemble, la chorale des garcons

Tobi Hunt McCoy is enjoying another
year as Season Stage Manager with the
National Arts Centre Orchestra. In past
seasons, Ms. McCoy stage managed
the Lord of the Rings Symphony,
Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s
Dream with Christopher Plummer in
2001 and Colm Feore in 2014, and much
of the Orchestra’s educational and Pops
programming. Also in 2014, she co-
produced the Pops show On the Air with
Jack Everly for the Edmonton Symphony
Orchestra, a show they also produced in
2007 for the NAC Orchestra.
Tobi Hunt McCoy poursuit sa

Sweater, A Paintbrush for Piccolo, and
A Symphony of Stories, amongst others.
