1. SIMPLE PRESENT

a. Structure

Subject        +        Base Verb        +        Object

Examples:

I like pizza. She lives in Toronto. We have a dog. They go to school.

For "he", "she", and "it" use the third-person verb. This is the same as the base verb, but it has an "s" on the end:

b. Negatives

Negatives in simple present use do not or does not.  They also use be + not.

Subject + Do/Does + not + base verb

Examples:

I do not like pizza. She does not play baseball.

After do not or does not the verb is always in the base form.

Simple Present Simple present Negative form

Here is a table that shows all the negative forms using do not or does not in the simple present.

c. Be + Not

Negative sentences can also use the verb to be and not.  They look like these examples:

I am not a doctor. She is not hungry. They are not from Africa.

d. Uses of Simple Present

Examples:

Scheduled Events in the Near Future

Examples:

o The train leaves tonight at 6 PM.

o The bus does not arrive at 11 AM, it arrives at 11 PM.

o The party starts at 8 o'clock.
