Future of Surveys

Bi-annual series of seminars:

Dear Attendee,

Mobile phones have had a remarkable impact on the world in a relatively short period of time. In all surveys, the overriding consideration is to reach all members of the public, young or old, male or female, employed or self-employed. In the nineties, fixed-line telephone coverage reached almost saturation point, but times are changing. In Europe, countries such as Finland and the Czech Republic now have a majority of citizens who are "mobile-only".

Furthermore, as mobile phone ownership and usage is currently higher among certain groups, such as younger members of the population, the potential arises for mobile-phone non- coverage bias. This was a topic widely debated during the 2004 US Presidential election. Further discussion and research on the topic is vital. That's why Gallup has brought together the world's leading experts to thrash out issues that will undoubtedly impact the future of social research.

Earlier this year, we were saddened by the death of Alec Gallup, a consummate polling professional who served the company for 60 years. If he was still with us, he would be watching the increase of the mobile-phone population with interest. Alec Gallup understood polling from A to Z and he knew that that the future of survey research depended on methodologies that would continue to give an equal opportunity of being polled … to all members of the public

We would therefore like to welcome you to "The 1st Alec Gallup Future of Survey Research Forum: Incorporating Mobile Phones in Social and Policy-oriented Surveys. Such events will be held bi-annually, to maintain a dialogue about the challenges of survey research in the changing reality.

Enjoy the day,

Robert Manchin, Chairman of the Board and Managing DirectorThe Gallup Organisation Europe

Alec M. Gallup, the late Chairman of the Gallup Poll, worked for the company for 60 years, acting as Co-Chairman along with his brother George Jr. in the 1990s. He was a member of Gallup Europe's Board of Directors since its inception in 2003. Alec was a consummate polling professional. In an interview some years ago, while agreeing that technology was changing the face of polling, Alec Gallup said that although the process was becoming quicker and more sophisticated, the "fine art of crafting a good question" remained integral to successful polling. Back in the early 1970s, Alec Gallup was part of the expert team that drafted the first versions of what were to become many of the key trend questions in the Eurobarometer series.

Some of Alec Gallup's major contributions to international polls include: a Survey of Nine Islamic Nations - conducted post 9/11, the Health of The Planet Survey - conducted in conjunction with the first World Forum on the Global Environment held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992, and a Survey of Consumer Attitudes and Lifestyles in China - the first scientifically-based national survey of the People's Republic of China (1997 and 1999).

MEETING FACILITYRegistered with the World heritage by UNESCO, L'Hôtel Solvay is unanimously recognised as a major work of the renowned Belgian architect, Victor Horta, one of the earliest initiators of Art Nouveau. Built in 1894 for Armand Solvay, son of the wealthy chemist and industrialist Ernest Solvay, this enthusiast of Art Nouveau gave Horta a free hand to build the Solvay family home including the interior design and furnishings down to the last detail (furniture, carpets, light fittings, tableware and even the door bell).

For the decoration of the staircase, Horta collaborated with the Belgian pointillist painter Théo van Rysselberghe. In 1957, the house was acquired by the family of Louis Wittamer who did their utmost to restore and preserve this magnificent dwelling. The Solvay House remains private property and can only be visited by appointment and under very strict conditions.
