is the Hub for RE?
Why
THAILANThailand has potential to become energy hub in ASEANThailand's strong agricultural base and long-standing experience in the biofuels sector could position the country to become the Brazil of ASEAN, and the government has already stated its objective of becoming a hub for ethanol trade.
Thailand is the leading producer of biofuels in Southeast Asia Thailand is the leading producer of biofuels in Southeast Asia and third only to China and Indonesia in Asia. The government intends to move away from crude oil dependency, particularly in the transportation sector, and the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency has actively promoted the use of alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, biodiesel, and ethanol.
Thailand is the second largest RE market in Southeast Asia Thailand is the second largest RE market in Southeast Asia, with a 19% share (1,813 MW) of total installed RE capacity, and it also plans to double existing capacity by 2030.
Thailand is expected to be the E.A.P.C.A. region’s largest P.V. market over the next four years A new report by NPD Solarbuzz estimated that solar photovoltaic demand from the emerging Asia Pacific and Central Asia (E.A.P.C.A) region would surpass 3 gigawatts by 2017, with Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines dominating the industry. Between 2013 and 2017, the five countries will account for 50% of the cumulative P.V. demand projection for the entire region. Thailand is expected to be the E.A.P.C.A. region’s largest market over the next four years, driven by rapid growth in demand for electricity and the need to end its dependence on imported energy.
Thailand RE sector will continue to attract investment, not only from its current technology base, but also from new industries (e.g. DGG and CBG).Unlike other markets where RE is being promoted on energy security grounds, Thailand growth is commercially motivated, and is driven primary by government incentives and supporting policies which have so far met with a positive response from private investors. In the future, the Thailand RE sector will continue to attract investment, not only from its current technology base, but also from new industries (e.g. Distributed Green Generation and Compressed Bio-Gas).
Current market players of RE equipment for solar, waste and biomass energy are moving to have their presence in ThailandGE Energy – plans to introduce its cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film photovoltaic technology to the Thai solar energy market within the next two years.Kyocera – Kyocera is Japan’s second largest solar panel producing company, recently won a major contract to build a solar farm in Thailand.
Thailand, hub for foreign direct investmentForeign investors should take Thailand into their account when they plan to open regional offices in Asia. Thailand is an attractive destination is increasing with the economic opening of neighboring Myanmar. In addition, the lowered taxes of 20% are compelling. Thailand offers ample investment opportunities in the food, automotive, renewable energy and machinery industries.
With the 2 trillion baht investment in infrastructure the country will be better linked to its neighbors and the logistics costs from currently 15% of GDP will reduce, thus making the country more competitive.
