1. INTRODUCTION

Osiris Projects were commissioned by Alderney Renewable Energy Ltd. (ARE) to

undertake a combined hydrographic, geophysical and oceanographic survey of an area

within Alderney Race that has been identified for tidal power development. The survey

included the investigation and development of two potential interconnector cable

routes, one from Alderney to mainland France (29km) and the other from Alderney to

Guernsey (36km). In addition to the hydrographic and geophysical elements to the

project, Osiris Projects were commissioned to acquire oceanographic information at

three locations using fixed location Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)

monitoring for a minimum 30 day period.

The objective of the development area survey was to map blocks T61, T74 and T75 so

that complete coverage was achieved. The information ascertained from the acoustic

survey was used to identify three suitable sites within the blocks for the installation of

the bottom mounted ADCP units, which are used to record tidal flow throughout the

water column, over a minimum 30 day period.

High-resolution side scan sonar, swath bathymetry, ‘Boomer’ sub-bottom profiler and

magnetometer data were acquired simultaneously across the site development area by

running parallel lines, with line centres at 75m, orientated directly in to and with the tidal

flow (approximately 040° - 220°). The same equipment array was used to survey the

cable routes, each comprising of 7 lines with line centres at 75m, giving total corridor

widths of 500m.

A drop down camera was used to ground truth side scan sonar data and to aid the

seabed classification.

Geophysical data acquisition took place using the survey vessel MV ‘Lia’, during the

period 11th to 29th April. Within this time block T75 was completed, block T61 was

partially completed and the cable route provisional reconnaissance lines were ran.

During the period 30th April to 3rd May MV ‘Lia’ was mobilised and used to deploy the

three bottom-mounted ADCP units. Geophysical data acquisition continued using the

survey vessel MV ‘Freja’, during the period 1st to 20th May, in which blocks T61, T74

and the remaining cable route lines were completed.

2.2 Survey Vessels

The survey vessel, MV ’Lia’ was utilised from start of survey until 3rd May. MV ‘Lia’ was

mobilised in Itchen Marina, Southampton before transiting to Braye harbour, Alderney

where she was based for the duration of her survey work. This provided a safe and

convenient port of operation, with transit time to the development site being

approximately 30 minutes, dependant upon the tidal state, prevailing weather and sea

conditions.

MV ‘Lia’ is a 15.3 metre catamaran of aluminium construction, which carries Category 2

certification under the current MCA Code of Practice for small workboats and pilot

boats.

Survey Vessel MV ‘Freja’ was utilised from 30th April to end of survey. MV ‘Freja’ was

mobilised in Braye harbour, Alderney where she was also based for the remainder of

the survey work.

MV ‘Freja’ is a 12.0m fast workboat of heavy duty GRP construction, which carries

Category 2 certification (60 miles from a safe haven) under the current MCA Code of

Practice for Small Workboats and Pilot Boats. A 12-hour operational day is normally

adopted aboard the vessel in the interests of Health & Safety.

Health & Safety meetings were held onboard Lia and attended by all members of the

survey crew and client representatives.

3. METHODS

3.1 Survey Control

3.1.1 Horizontal Control

During the survey works utilising the survey vessel ‘Lia’ primary positioning was

provided by a C-NAV 2050M, sub-metre differential subscription based Satellite Based

Augmentation System (SBAS) Global Positioning System (GPS). The subscription

SBAS technique uses Precise Point Positioning algorithms that results in accuracies of

0.1m XY and 0.2m Z Root Mean Square (RMS). The system utilises Real Time GIPSY

(GPS Inferred Positioning System (RTG)) technology developed by NASA's Jet

Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for precise real-time orbit and clock determination.

The SBAS correction service provides modelled orbit and clock observations for the

entire GPS satellite constellation. Using the observations the vessel receiver can then

compute its position. Traditional differential GPS (dGPS) works by transmitting

corrections, rather than observations from ground stations and therefore suffers from

what is known as ‘spatial decorrelation’ i.e. the accuracy of the position decreases as

the distance from the reference station increases. C-Nav does not suffer from spatial

decorrelation.

C-Nav operates in a variety of redundant modes. If, for some reason the RTG signal

subscription service fails, C-Nav automatically switches to each of these modes in the

following order:

• Wide Area Augmentation Service (WAAS) or the European GPS Navigation

Overlay System (EGNOS), which provides 1-2 metre accuracy at the site.

• Dual-frequency stand-alone GPS, which provides 3-5 metre accuracy

worldwide.

Secondary navigation on ‘Lia’ was provided by the use of a CSI Vector Sensor, sub-

metre differential Global Positioning System (dGPS) and GPS gyro. The system

utilised differential correction data from L-band EGNOS corrections and provides sub

metre positioning (at 95% confidence levels).

During the survey works utilising the survey vessel ‘Freja’ primary vessel positioning

was provided by the use of a CSI Vector Sensor, sub-metre differential Global

Positioning System (dGPS) and GPS gyro. The system utilised differential correction

data from L-band EGNOS corrections. A navigation check was performed, prior to

commencing the survey, using the CSI Vector Sensor, as outlined in section 4.1.1 of

this report.

In order to allow the navigation computers to display co-ordinates in real time, a datum

transformation is applied to the incoming satellite positional data, which is received as

a WGS84 (GPS datum) Lat/Long co-ordinate. This transformation is applied by the

navigation software, in this case QPS’s QINSy Navigation and Processing Software

System, ver 8.0. The geodetic parameters used are detailed below.

A dedicated navigation computer was utilised to integrate all of the onboard sensors

and to provide a single reference timeframe for all the onboard data acquisition

systems taken from the incoming GPS data. The navigation software system provides

the facility for guiding the survey vessel along pre-determined run lines via a remote

display, whilst controlling data logging and event marking of all onboard systems.

The geodetic parameters used were as follows: -:

The incoming data was not subjected to any shift or transformation.

In order to verify the dGPS system and the navigation software transformation

parameters, a static check was carried out by placing the dGPS receiver unit over a

known survey point (Little Crabby Harbour, Alderney) and logging the position over a

noted period of time. The verifications were carried out prior to commencing data

acquisition on the 12th April 2009.

On both vessels primary heading data was provided by a TSS Meridian Gyro

Compass.

3.1.2 Vertical Control

Bathymetric data was reduced to Chart Datum (CD) using a combination of observed

and predicted tides. A Valeport ‘Midas’ seabed-mounted tide gauge was installed in

Longis Bay, Alderney (559750mE, 5507600mN), with readings taken at 10-minute

intervals, throughout the survey period. These values were then compared with RTK

data, collected during operations aboard Lia, as a means of validation. The corrected

tide gauge data was utilised to reduce the bathymetric data within T61, T74 and T75 to

Chart Datum.

During the processing of the Alderney to Guernsey cable route survey a combination of

the installed tide gauge at Longis Bay and Guernsey Harbour observed tides were

used to reduce the data to Chart Datum.

During the processing of the Alderney to France cable route survey a combination of

the installed tide gauge at Longis Bay and predicted tides at Dielette were used to

reduce the data to Chart Datum.

3.2 Bathymetry

A GeoAcoustics ‘GeoSwath’, high-frequency (250 kHz) interferometric swath

bathymetry system was utilised to map seabed levels across the area of survey.

The GeoSwath is a high-resolution swath bathymetry system specifically designed for

shallow water work. The unit utilises the phase comparison technique (interferometric)

to provide high resolution XYZ data. The system has the capability of providing a high-

density data set when compared to a beam forming system for a given water depth. A

beam forming system must interpolate between data points to achieve high-resolution

grids, whereas a phase measurement system can average or statistically filter many

real data points within each grid cell for the same resolution grid. The end result is a

grid file of the same size with a much higher degree of accuracy.

Under optimum conditions, the GeoSwath system enables bathymetric coverage out to

approximately 10 times the water depth.

The unit incorporates a TSS DMS205 motion sensor, which is mounted between the

transducer heads in order to accurately compensate for motion effects on the

bathymetry data.

Speed of sound data was acquired using a Valeport ‘Monitor’ CTD (Conductivity,

Temperature and Depth) probe, which was lowered over the side of the survey vessel

in order to determine the velocity profile through the water column, at 1.0m intervals.

CTD dips were taken daily during bathymetric data acquisition. Speed of sound values

were recorded and the relevant figures have been used for all post processing. The

orientation for the system was provided by the TSS Meridian Gyro Compass.

The production of XYZ files involves the generation of each individual swath line with

all necessary offsets applied, filtering occurs during this process, to ensure only true

data is obtained and all data such as water column noise is removed. The lines can

then be gridded into the necessary areas and XYZ data can be extracted. This is

achieved within the GeoAcoustics ‘GeoSwath’ software.

3.3 Side Scan Sonar System

The side scan sonar system comprised of a GeoAcoustics 159D Side Scan Sonar Tow

Fish, SS941 Dual Frequency Side Scan Sonar Transceiver and Coda Technologies

DA2000 Digital Data Acquisition System.

The system consists of a ballasted towed underwater ‘fish’ which sends out short, high

frequency, high intensity, sound bursts which are beamed from either side of the fish, in

a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel. The frequency of these sound

bursts is selectable at either 114 or 410 KHz via the sonar transceiver. The transmitted

acoustic ‘beam’ is narrow in the horizontal plane, yet sufficiently broad in the vertical

plane to produce echoes from the seabed to points abeam of the transducer. These

echoes, once detected by the transducers, are sent via the tow cable to the recorder,

which electronically processes the signals and displays them in real time on the Coda

DA2000 digital data acquisition system. Greater amounts of energy are reflected by

harder or denser materials than by softer seabed types, resulting in images of differing

reflectivity or contrast. This enables the geophysicist to delineate areas of differing

seabed sediment types, including rock outcrops and isolated contacts/targets.

All acquired data is recorded to the internal hard drive of the Coda DA2000 system and

backed up to DVD RAM disks on a daily basis.

Side scan sonar survey lines were run simultaneously with the multi-beam bathymetry,

sub-bottom profiler and magnetometer systems.

A range scale of approximately 75 metres per channel was employed utilising the 410

KHz tow fish frequency for all of the survey lines (except for all cable route

reconnaissance lines where a reduced operating frequency of 100 KHz was used to

ensure a boosted range of 200 metres per channel). This provided a nominal swath

width of 150 metres, centred on each survey line (400m for the reconnaissance lines).

This swath of data includes a small ‘dead-zone’, directly beneath the tow-fish, the

extents of which are dependant upon the height of the tow fish above the seabed.

3.4 Sub-Bottom Profiling System

A surface-towed Applied Acoustics AA200 ‘boomer’ sub-bottom profiling system was

utilised aboard both survey vessels.

The system consists of an insulated metal plate and rubber diaphragm adjacent to a

flat wound electrical coil, mounted on a towed catamaran.

A short duration, high-power electrical pulse, generated by the shipboard CSP1000P

power supply, discharges to the electrical coil. The resultant magnetic field explosively

repels the metal plate generating a broadband acoustic pressure pulse in the water

column. The frequency of this pulse is in the range 400 Hz to 14 kHz, with the majority

of the energy being directed vertically downwards at a maximum output of 300 joules

per pulse. For the purposes of this survey the boomer was fired at a rate of 4 times

per second, using 100 joules per pulse.

A percentage of the acoustic energy is reflected from the seafloor. This percentage is

dependent upon the composition of the seabed. The remaining energy penetrates the

seabed and is reflected from layers of contrasting acoustic impedance. Acoustic

impedance is the product of the density and seismic velocity of a material.

The acoustic returns were detected by a multi-element hydrophone, which was towed

parallel to the source catamaran astern of the vessel. This configuration was used in

an attempt to minimise the direct source-receiver signal. The acoustic returns detected

by the hydrophone were converted to an electrical signal, which was amplified, filtered

and then displayed in graphical form on a seismic recorder. The character of the sub-

bottom records is therefore dependent upon the way in which the acoustic signal is

reflected. This is used to interpret the conditions present.

The data is enhanced by the use of in-line Coda DA2000 shallow marine seismic

filtering. Filter/output power settings for the system are dependent upon survey

objectives (penetration/resolution) and also the conditions on the day the survey is

conducted. A low-cut filter of approximately 500 Hz and a high-cut filter of

approximately 4.0 kHz were used throughout the survey, together with a 100J power

output. Raw sub-bottom data was recorded direct to the Coda DA2000 digital data

acquisition system for later post-processing and archiving.

The accuracy of any sub-bottom profiling survey depends upon the correct choice of

acoustic velocity for the travel path of the seismic wave. After an initial appraisal of the

collected data, velocity assignments are made which, from experience and published

information1 are thought to be typical for the interpreted sediments present. Using

these velocities, comparisons between depths to reflectors and any known depths to

geological interfaces are made. The average seismic velocity of the travel paths may

then be altered to ensure good correlation between seismic reflectors and geological

events. A table of typical interpreted depth errors due to variations in average seismic

velocity is presented below:

3.5 Magnetometer

A Geometrics G882 magnetometer was utilised for this aspect of the survey.

The magnetometer incorporates a towed ‘fish’, which houses a total magnetic field

sensor, with each unit providing absolute readings of total magnetic field, at a

resolution of 0.01nT (nanoTesla) or better.

In operation, the magnetometer is towed at a known distance from the survey vessel,

with the surface interface unit synchronised to the survey computer’s clock. All

collected data are logged to the computer via an RS232 link and combined with

positional data for later retrieval and post-processing.

The magnetometer is used to investigate sub-surface geology on the basis of

anomalies in the Earth’s magnetic field. Objects high in ferrous or ferric compounds

will produce significant magnetic anomalies. These may include unexploded ordnance,

pipelines/cables and wreck debris.

3.6 Underwater Video Survey

A KONGSBERG OE1370 Drop Down Digital Video Camera was utilised for this aspect

of the survey works. In order to get the camera to the seabed at location, the video

camera was attached to the side scan sonar fish, with the survey vessel traveling at

slow speeds (drifting) along the required transects.

4. EQUIPMENT SETTINGS

4.1 Navigation

A dedicated navigation computer was utilised to integrate all of the onboard sensors

and to provide a single reference timeframe for all the onboard data acquisition

systems taken from the incoming GPS data. The navigation software system, in this

case QPS’s ‘QINSy’, provides the facility for guiding the survey vessel along pre-

determined run lines via a remote display, whilst controlling data logging and event

marking of all onboard systems.

4.2 Multi-beam Echo Sounder

System: GeoAcoustics ‘GeoSwath’

Frequencies: 250 kHz

Range: Up to 10 x Water Depth

Cross-track Resolution: 1.5 cm

Two-way Beam Width: 0.5° Azimuth

The system incorporated a TSS DMS205 dynamic motion sensor, in order to

accurately compensate for vessel motion effects on the bathymetry data.

Secondary bathymetric information was provided by the SIMRAD EA400 (Lia) and

Knudsen 320M (Freja) Dual Frequency Echo Sounders and recorded again using

‘QINSy’ software.

4.3 Tide Gauge

System: Valeport ‘Midas’

Sampling Interval: 10 minutes.

5. EQUIPMENT CALIBRATIONS

5.1 Navigation System

In order to calibrate each vessels navigation system, the respective vessel’s mobile

dGPS receiver was removed and placed over a point of known co-ordinate to confirm

the navigation software transformation parameters, in MV Lia’s case this was a station

on the breakwater at Little Crabby Harbour, Braye, Alderney. This exercise was

carried out on the 12th April 2009 prior to commencing survey operations. Survey

control details are provided in Appendix 1 to this report.

For the calibration, the receiver unit was left in place for a noted period, with readings

taken at regular intervals. A navigation data scatter plot can be found in Appendix 1 to

this report.

Gyro calibrations were conducted by both vessels by comparing the observed vessel

heading against a baseline of known orientation, in this case Commercial Quay at

Braye Harbour.

5.2 Multi-Beam Echo Sounder

The GeoSwath system was subject to a calibration routine that involves the collection

of overlapping data along three parallel lines, run in alternate directions over an area of

flat seabed and an area of slope/significant feature. Once acquired, the system loads

and compares the data from reciprocal overlapping passes of each channel and

determines correction values for roll, pitch, yaw, and heading and timing errors. These

parameters are then entered into the system, along with transducer draft, speed of

sound profile and tidal data, in order to create the corrected swath files.

Speed of sound data was acquired using a Valeport ‘Monitor’ probe, which was

lowered over the side of the survey vessel in order to determine the velocity profile

through the water column, at 0.5m intervals. CTD dips were taken daily during

bathymetric data acquisition. Speed of sound values were recorded and the relevant

figures have been used for all post processing.

6. DATA REDUCTION & PROCESSING

6.1 Navigation Data

All dGPS positions were processed to remove any erroneous data. Vessel track charts

are presented in each volume of this report. All positions are expressed as WGS 84;

UTM Zone 30 North coordinates, throughout this report.

6.2 Multi-Beam Echo Sounder

The production of XYZ files from raw data files - ultimately the aim of swath bathymetry

data - involves the generation of each individual swath line with all necessary offsets

applied. Filtering takes place during this process to ensure that only true data is used,

and all outstanding data (such as water column noise) is removed. The lines can then

be gridded into the necessary areas, and XYZ data can be exported for the production

of images or soundings. This process is achieved using GeoAcoustics ‘GeoSwath

Plus‘ software. All soundings acquired during the survey have been reduced to Chart

Datum (CD). This takes place during the filtering process. Reduced data are presented

on the drawings in the relevant volumes of this report as bathymetric charts, which are

contoured at a vertical interval of 1.0m, relative to Chart Datum (CD).

6.3 Side Scan Sonar

Side scan sonar data was collected along all survey lines and was digitally recorded

direct to a CodaOctopus DA2000 digital data acquisition system.

Interpretation was performed using CodaOctopus’ ‘Geokit Sidescan’ module of their

Geosurvey suite, to produce Seabed Features charts incorporating any potential

hazards and obstructions identified. Towfish position is calculated during post-

processing using a simple straight cable model for layback. The towfish is assumed to

follow directly behind the vessel, on a line determined by the current vessel heading

and at a distance calculated from the current towfish depth (minus the depth on the tow

point of the vessel) and the amount of cable out.

6.4 Sub Bottom Profiler

Sub-bottom profiler data were collected along all survey lines and were digitally

recorded direct to a CodaOctopus DA2000 digital data acquisition system.

Interpretation was performed using CodaOctopus’ ‘Geokit Seismic’ module of the

‘Geosurvey’ suite, to produce isopachyte and reduced rockhead level charts.

6.5 Magnetometer

The magnetometer was utilised along all survey lines. The processed data were used

to indicate the presence of buried ferric/ferrous objects within the survey area.

Magnetometer data were also used to map any seabed ferric/ferrous targets, in

conjunction with the processed sonar data.

6.6 Processing and Reporting

All survey data was processed using ‘QPS QINSy, GeoSwath GS+, CodaOctopus’

‘Geokit’ Geosurvey and Bentley’s ‘MicroStation’ CAD software suites.

7. DATA QUALITY

7.1 Navigation

Navigation data were consistently within the published specifications of the system.

7.2 Multi-Beam Echo Sounder

Data from the multi-beam echo sounder were recorded digitally and were considered to

be of excellent quality.

7.3 Side Scan Sonar

Recorded quality was also considered to be excellent.

8. HEALTH & SAFETY

Prior to the commencement of the field operations, the following activities were

completed: -

• Field staff project briefing and Project Safety Meeting.

• Documented Onboard Safety Brief and toolbox talks

All work undertaken during the contract by Osiris Projects personnel was carried out

within the general guidelines of Osiris Projects’ Safety Policy, as defined within the

Health & Safety manuals for MV ‘Lia’ and MV ‘Freja’. Personal Protective Equipment

(PPE) was utilised throughout the contract, as required.

No accidents, incidents or near misses were reported during the contract.

dual-frequency precision GPS receiver, two

additional channels for receiving Satellite

Based Augmentation System (SBAS) signals

and an L-Band demodulator for reception of

C-NAV GPS GIVES YOU THE WORLD. ONE DECIMETER AT A TIME.

The C-Nav2050G provides 64MB internal memory for data storage and provides the

user with up to 5Hz measurement and position solutions. In addition, optional 10Kz

and 25Hz Fast Positioning Update rates are available as well as raw data measurement

outputs at 10Hz, 25Hz or 50Hz.

The C-Nav2050M has all the standard features of the C-Nav2050G plus a 1PPS output

port and a combined Event/CAN Bus interface port. In addition, 25Hz Fast Position

Update rate is available and optional raw data measurement outputs up to 50Hz, and

optional RTK Position Velocity and Time (PVT) solution at up to 5Hz are available.

The C-Nav2050R has all the standard features of the C-Nav2050G but provides for two

L-Band signal connections, one for the Dual Frequency GPS antenna and the second for

a hi-gain L-Band communication satellite antenna.

The C-Nav2050 GPS family of receivers provides survey positioning services on a

GeoSwath PlusIntegrated Survey Software

Introduction

GeoSwath Plus is an entirely new software package from GeoAcoustics which offers enhanced functionality for standard vessel based GeoSwath applications, as well as allowing GeoSwath to be easily used for ROV and AUV applications. The software has been written for Windows XP, and can act as Ethernet broadcast or receiver, allowing local or remote acquisition and processing. GeoSwath Plus offers significant benefits to existing GeoSwath users as it offers many important new features: Survey Management

• All files, settings etc are stored by project name.

• All file types automatically organised within each project. Simple survey management.

The 320M Marine Echosounder was developed to meetdemanding requirements of field work. Its low mainte-nance modular construction, together with advancedfeatures and easy configuration, make the 320M the mostflexible sounder available.

Using either the high or low frequency channel, or bothsimultaneously, the 320M produces a high resolutionrecord accurately depicting bottom profiles and sedimentlayers with 32 shades of grey. The thermal printer useseasily loaded 21.6cm (8.5") plastic film for permanent,high-quality records. The annotated depth grid is printedwith reverse shading for clarity.

Digitized water depth is shown on two large 4-digit LCDdisplays, visible in direct sunlight and backlit for nightoperation. Serial RS232 depth data is continuouslyavailable in NMEA format as well as user-defined stringformats, and in operator-selectable time and positiontagged formats.

An LCD menu display with simple 2-button controlprovides access to parameters such as sound velocity,draft, TX blanking, serial port assignment, time and datesetting, and many more, as well as a variety of self-test,communication and configuration features. All settingsare retained in non-volatile memory and recalled onpower-up.

Three RS232 ports support communication with personalcomputers, NMEA input and output devices, GPS receiv-ers, sound velocity sensors, heave sensors, remote depthdisplays and survey data loggers.

The standard 320M firmware includes drivers for all thedevices above and can be field upgraded where firmwarecan be downloaded through a serial port into “flash”program memory.

In addition to traditional "hands-on" operation, anoptional upgrade allows the 320M to be operated remotelythrough the built in SCSI interface and Windows applica-tion software.

Dual FrequencySide Scan Sonar

Introduction

The GeoAcoustics Dual Frequency Side Scan Sonar system is the ideal tool for seabed feature mapping, offering flexibility and high quality results in a simple and reliable package. The system offers high resolution, switch selectable, dual frequency operation (114/410 kHz), which when combined with multiplexed data transmission enables a low drag co-axial tow cable to be used. This also facilitates simple installation onto remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s) and combined systems towfish. The versatility, ease of operation and cost effectiveness of the system has made it a popular choice with commercial survey companies. Transceiver The transceiver unit allows the operator a simple means of controlling various Side Scan operating parameters. The unit includes standard controls such as: Gain, Time Varying Gain (TVG) and Automatic Gain Control (AGC), with duplicated controls for Port and Starboard channels. The operating frequency can also be switched from 114 kHz to 410 kHz directly from the Transceiver. The choice of frequencies means that long range scanning and short range high resolution investigations are both possible. Multiplexer The Multiplexer Unit (SS982) is the sub-sea processing section of the Side Scan Sonar system. The SS982 is mounted in the tail of the towfish, on the tail of a combined towfish or on a ROV, as required. The use of standard sub-sea connectors throughout allows easy installation in all situations. The SS982 includes all of the transmitter and multiplexing electronics, thereby ensuring that transmission power is not lost in the towcable and also reducing the risk of high voltage defects. The multiplexed data transmission technique employed allows the system to be used with a wide selection of towcables, including twisted pair and co-axial cables. Data from the Dual Frequency Side Scan Sonar can be input to many sonar processing systems, including a GeoPro Sonar Processor, or it can be displayed on a wide variety of industry standard graphic recorders.

The multiplexed data is analogue and so is not limited by analogue to digital converter resolution and conversion speed trade-offs inherent in digital systems. This has resulted in a robust unit which is considerably more tolerant of cable leakage than digital systems, and yet offers a resolution equivalent to a 16 bit converter operating at 50k samples/sec per channel.

Standard System

The standard system employs a lightweight towfish, which is easily deployed by one person and can operate to a depth of 1000 metres. There are separate controls for each channel, which makes the system very easy to operate. The basic system includes the following: • Transceiver (model SS981) • Towfish (model 159D), which houses the

Multiplexer (model SS982) and Two Dual Frequency Transducers (model 196D/Port and Starboard).

Designed specifically for use with our CSP range of energy sources, (although others can be used) the efficiency of the AA200 transducer ensures high output with an excellent pulse shape. Designed for ease of use in the real world offshore, we have ensured that the flying lead connectors can be replaced in the field in case of damage. Diaphragm replacement is also straightforward. Since its launch in 1996, QINSy has become the standard in marine surveying,bathymetric chart production and ENC production.

Extremely Large Sounding GridsThe key technology developed by QPS is based on the collection andpresentation of large volumes of navigation and depth data, all in real-time to produce almost final results on-the-fly. A powerful SoundingGrid (SG) is used for on-line presentation and off-line processing.The SG comprises multiple levels with a different resolution per level based onthe quadtree technique. Only the highest resolution level need be defined; allothers are produced automatically. The other resolutions (e.g.1m x 1m, 2m x 2m,4m x 4m, 8m x 8m, etc.) are used for faster display purposes, and also to definethe resolution of data exported from the Sounding Grid.The SG has no boundaries and is therefore unlimited in size! In the SoundingGrid Utility (SGU) the user has only to define the base cell size (highestresolution). Online the first position recorded is used as origin.Multiple layer support allows simultaneous storage of different data types todifferent layers. For example, multibeam data is stored in one layer, side scansonar data to another, magnetometer data to a third layer and singlebeamdata, pipe tracker data, dredger production value and/or any other system toadditional layers in the same SG. During on-line navigation, displaying acombination of two layers is possible. This allows for draping side scan sonardata over multibeam bathymetric data, or dredge production volumesdraped over bathymetric depth, or theoretical profile.

Comprehensive Survey Planning

Created at the planning stage with the Setup program, a Template Databasecontains all survey configuration parameters pertinent to the project. QINSysupports most of the World’s datums and projections (including predefinedUS State Plane System coordinate systems), multiple units and geoidal modelsused world-wide. The template contains vessel shapes, administrative infor-mation, as well as vessel offsets and I/O parameters. It is a complete reflectionof your current survey set up and fully editable to kick-start your next project.

Background DisplayDrawing files generated from CAD programs often contain more recent andmore accurate information than electronic navigation charts. QINSy allowsimport of DXF, DWG and PRO files. To ensure speedy refresh rates of real-timedisplays, DXF and DWG files are converted with the DXF Converter at theplanning phase. These binary files are displayed as an overlay to S-57 ENCcharts in the Navigation Display. QINSy supports both S-57 and CM93v3Electronic Navigation Charts.The use of satellite images, aerial photo’s or any other geo-referenced bitmapsin the Navigation Display gives another dimension to your area of interest.

Sounding Grid UtilityA Sounding Grid to be used during data acquisition is created in surveyplanning. Grid cell size, the statistics to be recorded per cell and the layersrequired to store the various data acquired online are all defined at this stage.No boundary definition is needed, and file size is no longer a software issue,the limits now being attributable to processing power, memory available andhard disk capacity.The Sounding Grid Utility (SGU) is populated online with various data, all ofwhich can be accessed offline in post processing. With support for ENCs,GeoTIFFs, and DXF background files, waypoint planning functionality in theutility is used during survey planning to design survey line layouts.

Real-time Final Results -Data Collection and Output

Raw Sensor DataAll raw sensor data is logged and permanently stored in fast relational data-bases (*.db) to each of which the entire survey configuration is copied fromthe template. Raw data can be analyzed and edited using the Analyseprogram, making it ready for the Replay program and generation of newresults if that is necessary.

Accurate Timing and Ring BuffersAccurate timing is imperative in many survey situations. QINSy uses a verysophisticated timing routine based on the PPS option (Pulse Per Second)available on almost all GPS receivers. All incoming and outgoing data isaccurately time stamped with a UTC time label. Internally, QINSy uses so-called “observation ring buffers”, so that data values may be interpolatedfor the exact moment of the event or ping.

Real-time DTM ProductionAll computations of position are performed in3D. In combination with RTK or real-time tidegauges, this means that all depth obser-vations are immediately available in absolutesurvey datum coordinates. This unique tech-nique is called “on-the-fly DTM Production”.QPS was the first company introducing the “delta heave” method, whichmeans that the quality of the final DTM is no longer affected by heave driftcaused by vessel turns.Gridded point data output to the Sounding Grid is paralleled by an output ofALL soundings to a second file (*.qpd,*.sds,*.fau,*.pts or other). Either reducedor full datasets are available for further DTM processing.

Data StorageHow raw and results data files are split up during acquisition is your choice.Data may be stored on a line-by-line basis, by file size, or by manual inter-vention. Whatever the method, data are normally stored in several separatedatabases for convenience in processing.

Enhanced Functionality - Getting the best out of your system

Side Scan SonarBackscatter from most modern multibeam systems(called ‘snippets’) and/or true Side Scan Sonar data, ismosaiced in real-time, geo-referencing being performedusing a flat bottom assumption, or, better still, using afull 3D terrain model. In addition to the waterfall display,this geo-referenced backscatter data, and/or data fromdedicated side scan sonar sensors, is presented in real-time as a mosaic in one layer of the multi-layeredsounding grid, itself one of the layers in the multi-lay-ered Navigation Display. QINSy offers advanced real-timeSSS target detection, meaning that SSS processing time is cut down to almostzero. A dedicated SSS data viewer supports loading, viewing and performingtarget detection is just seconds.

EventingUsed in many survey operations like pipe-laying, pipeline inspection, and buoytendering for example, Eventing is a powerful feature in QINSy. Completelyuser-configurable, all events, and classes of events are defined in planning.Using the resultant Event Tablet online, events are easily generated with asingle mouse click, with each event log stored in real-time.

Use of Multi Layer Sounding GridFor multibeam surveys, ”gridding” is the predomi-nant data reduction method. However, achievedreductions usually mean a loss of resolution. In QINSya regular multi-level gridding method is used.Based on the minimum cell size, 5 additional gridsare generated on-the-fly. Grid file size is no longer anissue, since there is no limit to the number of gridcells. If the minimum cell size is selected to be 1x1meter, then the following grid levels are automati-cally generated; 2 x 2, 4 x 4, 8 x 8, 16 x 16, 64 x 64being the overview level.The method used in QINSy ensures faster update ofnavigation and 3D displays (only show the resolutionwhich fits to the viewing scale and screen resolu-tion), smoother contours using larger cell sizewithout loosing data and provide the user directaccess to various resolution levels without the needof replaying the survey data.

Beside the availability of multiple properties per cellsuch as mean value, minimum value, maximumvalue, value count, standard deviation etc, the userhas access to create multiple layers into the samesounding grid. Data from multiple sensors can berecorded into the same sounding grid, at the sametime, but on different layers. The user can toggleeasily between the different layers and/or can set upmultiple navigation displays showing differentSounding Grid layers. It is also possible to combinetwo layers, allowing the user to view, for example,Side Scan Sonar data draped over the multibeamecho sounder data in real time!Sun illumination of the sounding grid layer opens theeyes of the user. Small items and difficult to findpipelines suddenly show up when using the coloredsun illumination option on your data.

In post processing the recorded data can be viewedand edited using the special developed sounding gridutility, the user has the ability to perform;• Improved Volume calculation between two layers

with or without tolerance levels (Over dredgedesign);

• Quick cross profiles through Sounding Grid;• GeoTIFF images can be exported for use by QINSy

online, or by 3rd party software;• Depth contours and spot soundings can be generat-

Total Propagated ErrorSo that our users could qualify their data inreal-time according to IHO S-44 provisions,QPS implemented TPE (Total PropagatedError) functionality, sometimes referred toas ‘error budget’. The TPE of a point is ameasure of the accuracy to be expected forthat point, when all relevant error sourcesare taken into account.

For example, the TPE of a computed DTM point on the seafloor, comprises thepropagation of the individual errors of the echosounder system, motion refer-ence system, sound velocity system, positioning system, heading system, shipsoffset system and other systems which contribute to the total propagatederror.

Advanced Dredging FunctionalityAdvanced dredging functionality to control and monitor dredging operationsin real-time is available as an add-on module to QINSy Survey. The availablesensors on board the dredger are integrated in QINSy and used to calculatenot only the exact location of the dredge tool, but also perform TDS andproduction calculations.The Profile Display is used to visualize in real-time, the dredge tool relative tothe various DTM layers containing, for example, current survey depth andtheoretical profile. The dredge tool object shape (dredge head, bucket, etc.) isviewable from different angles. The Profile display shows the distancebetween the object and each of the DTM layers with an update rate of up to 10 times per second.The entire dredge process can also be monitored using the powerful real-time3D display, employing multiple perspectives from different camera views.Hopper dredgers, cutter dredgers, backhoes and other dredging tools are seenmoving in a 3D environment at the same time that the dredged depths areupdating the multi-layer sounding grid, all in real-time.

Anchor Handling &Barge MonitoringAdvanced functionality is used to monitor tugboats relative to a rig/barge andthe local environment from one location. Data transmission betweenrig/barge and tugboats ensures anchor pattern exchange between thevessels. A special Tugboat Display program, requiring no surveyor, runs on eachtugboat, providing continuous geographic context of position and targetinformation for the required task.For ease of use, anchor locations can all be positioned by click and drag of themouse on the navigation display!

OBC-Seismic supportQINSy provides full support for the execution, monitoring and controlling ofthe OBC Seismic operation on both the recording, and the shooting, vessel.On the shooting vessel, QINSy provides general navigation, positioning of theon-bottom streamer by means of a USBL system, and interpolation ofhydrophone group positions.On board of the airgun vessel, QINSy is used for general navigation, triggeringof airguns at predefined positions (including user defined preload) andpositioning of airguns.QINSy can export and merge navigation records from the shooting andrecording vessel using the UKOOA P1/90 format.

Quality Management SystemA Quality Management System (QMS) provides bothsurveyor and processor with full insight into the cali-brations performed, and the settings used, from startof survey (calibrations) to end (validation of data).The following main features are recorded in the QMS:• Start and end time of each survey line;• Sound velocity profile;• Alerts such as roll, pitch outside limits;• Data cleaning tools and de-spiking used both

Data Cleaning Employing various real-time data cleaning tools and correcting for motion,tide and refraction, QINSy is designed to output almost final results at thetime of data acquisition. QINSy EPP-57The QINSy ENC Production Platform 57 distinguishes itself from otherapproaches to electronic chart production platforms by its efficient way ofdata storage, and through the principle of semi-static base cells that are easilyupdated with highly dynamic bathymetric data. The bathymetric data isgenerated directly from the digital terrain model, itself updated constantlywith new hydrographic survey data. This principle allows for a completelyupdated ENC cell ready for distribution within hours of survey completion.Since the system is built on open Oracle technology, it can be adapted andextended under the user’s own supervision. The user makes use of the newlydeveloped ENC Qomposer, an ENC editor for conversion of data to and fromthe EPP-57.

QloudNewer generations of multibeam echsounders dramatically increased thenumber of depth soundings, both in terms of number of beams, and in pingrate. Dual-head multibeam systems providing up to 20,000 depthmeasurements per second have become a reality.Despite this increase in data volumes, the QPS philosophy of producing almostfinal soundings in real-time remains effective. However, as always, there is stilla need to validate the online results using off-line tools. The difference is thatthese ever increasing data volumes require a new offline data analyze tool,ready for the future.Our new 3D data cleaning tool, called Qloud, is specially developed to handleextremely large areas of multibeam data and to perform statistical datacleaning using parameters such as Total Propagated Error (TPE) in algorithmslike CUBE (developed by the Ocean Mapping Group at the University of NewHampshire) and the surface spline filter.Qloud allows very fast scrolling through the data and instantaneous focusingon the problem areas.

QINSy MappingQINSy Mapping is a powerful processing package for the marine surveyingand construction industry. With its many task-specific macro utilities, thesoftware performs all necessary calculations quickly and easily, produces plots,generates contours and spot soundings, and calculates precise volumes in justseconds. A dedicated add-on module is available to export depth contours andspot soundings directly into IHO S57 ENC vector chart format. The WLR features two basic operating modes. The first

uses the standard method of continuous measurement of the

pressure sensor output for a fixed period. This integration

period is user selectable from 10 to 600 seconds (40 seconds

typical). The second mode uses a highly accurate frequency

measurement method, which allows readings to be made at 1, 2

4 or 8Hz. Data sampled in this mode may be output

continuously, or in a burst pattern (typically 40 seconds every

10 minutes). Whilst this mode may allow a transient pressure

event of a few milliseconds duration to be overlooked, it does

allow a statistical analysis to be performed on the data set,

gving an indication of data quality and wave activity without

significantly compromising accuracy or resolution.

Standard memory is 8Mbyte FLASH, which is capable of storing

approximately 1.4million records. The memory is non-volatile,

so data and configuration are retained in the event of power

failure.

The M WLR is a precision water level

recorder, designed for use in both autonomous

or real time deployments. Fitted with an industry

standard resonant quartz pressure sensor and

accurate PRT temperature sensor, the M

WLR features a variety of operating modes from

rapid 8Hz continuous sampling to power saving

burst modes for long term monitoring. The

instrument is available in both shallow water

acetal or deep water titanium versions, and is

suitable for fixed or in-line mooring, with a

variety of communications options built in.

Nominal power consumption at 12v is 20mA during sampling,

dropping to less than 0.1mA during sleep mode. A typical

regime of 40 second sampling every 10 minutes will allow a life

in excess of 90 days with alkaline cells, extending to over 200

days with Lithium cells. External power input is 9 - 30vDC.

All Valeport “400 series” instruments are fitted with RS232,

RS485 and RS422 communications as standard, chosen by pin

selection on the output connector. Baud rate is selectable from

2400 to 460,800 (PC serial port permitting). RS232 comms are

suitable for cable lengths up to 200m, extending to 1000m for

RS485/RS422. FSK modem comms are optionally available for

real time data output over 6km cable. A USB to RS232 adaptor

is also optionally available, further enhancing the possible

communications options.

Instrument is supplied with DataLog 400 PC software, which is

used to setup the instrument, upload memory and display data

in tabular and graphical formats. The secondary calibration
