In his studio, he learned how to prepare wood panels and mix oil paints that had recently been invented in Northern Eu- rope. He also assisted in carving illustrations onto wood panels for printmaking. Wood- block printmaking originated in China around 220 AD and Northern European artists reinvented the art around 1400. Albrecht drew a design onto the surface of a smooth wood panel. en he would carve away the wood around the lines. Black ink was rolled onto the carved out surface then pressed onto paper to make a print. After the ink dried, the illustration was painted with watercolor. Albrecht probably didn’t realize at the time that he was helpingWolgemut make a paraphrased Bible and world history book, called e Nuremberg Chronicles, that would later become famous. During the three years of his apprenticeship, Albrecht helped carve out 645 wood panel illustrations. When the book was finally published in 1493 by Albrecht’s godfather, Anton Koberger, 1500 copies in Latin and 1000 copies in German had been printed. Albrecht Durer Albrecht Durer was born into a family of artists in Nurem- berg, Germany, 1471. He began drawing at three years old and was trained as a goldsmith and engraver by his father when he was twelve. He drew his first self portrait at thirteen years old in silverpoint; an engraving technique in which a silver wire is used to scratch the surface of a primed paper, making permanent thin lines. is was among the first self portraits done in all of Europe. 13 years old, 1484 silverpoint 26 years old, 1498 oil on wood 22 years old, 1493 oil on wood 28 years old, 1500, oil on wood A page from the e Nuremberg Chronicles
