BAE JOONSUNG (born 1967 Kwangju)

Bae Joonsung completed an M.F.A and B.F.A at Seoul National University and now lives and works in Seoul. He was recognized from very early on in his career in both the domestic art scene as well as in Europe.

The series ‘The Costume of the Painter’ was his iconic work, in which he

through manual interaction by the viewer, to reveal Asian female nudes

contextualises the original impression and his pastiche. Since 2006, the introduction of lenticular lens in his work made this viewing experience effortless. The most recent series of paintings are titled ‘The Museum’ and Bae Joonsung has emphasized the theme of relativity; the viewer and being viewed by placing his work in the multi-perspective environment of Museums.

TINA BUCHHOLTZ (born 1963 Berlin)

The end of the nineties marked a shift away from my erstwhile traditional portrayal of landscapes to usher in a phase of informal colour montages that provided medium to indulge my fascination with colour phenomena to the full. Paintings of merging patches of colour give rise to layers in a sea of colour with deep intensity of expression. This process of dispersal and reattachment came about by chance. As time progressed, canvasses used became steadily larger.

This led to in-depth study of the life and works of Jackson Pollock, with whom

I use various sizes of spatulas and spread the colours in a relief and montage form. The prominent feature is a colourfully scattered expression of rhythm and

performed using nothing more than the spatula blade. I press the blade in the

strands interspersed with translucent glaze gives rise to an impression of great

structures create patterns of shade as the light moves, so that images change according to lighting. This effect imbues with the added feeling of variability, changeable mood, symbolic of the sometimes-unexpected changes in life and variant approaches for one and the same event. The inspiration for my work has come from literature, music, discussions and debates with colleagues and experience. The tension between the task of building and sustaining a stable lifestyle, the alertness demanded in ordinary life and my individual fantasies and

almost meditative process employed in a work is as much an expression of an inward and outward sense of order as the urge for love of life, impulsiveness and spontaneity.

The creation of artworks has been my passion ever since my early childhood years. My development in the world of art has taken an unconventional path, sometimes by stubbornly pursuing my own way, the authentic power of expression in my paintings has elicited an earnest response.

HONG SUNGCHUL (born 1969 Seoul)

Hong Sungchul completed an M.F.A and B.F.A in sculpture at Hongik

Hong Sungchul is an artist who embraces modern technologies and various media within his work. The concept of the current body of work has evolved from an earlier stage of his career. His use of numerous staggered elastic strings upon which the imagery is printed, communicates his unique concept of visual consciousness. The broken images interlace and transform to reveal

these engaging three-dimensional works Hong Sungchul attempts to unveil the virtual object through his use of distorted and fragmented imagery resulting in stunning visual effects.

JAEHYO LEE (born 1965 South Korea)

Korean contemporary art has for some decades now revealed a very special sensibility – neither Chinese nor Japanese, but containing elements that are reminiscent of both. Lee’s work shows immense respect for natural materials, but also the will to dominate what nature has provided. One is immediately

long hours of hard physical labour that must have gone into the production of these immaculate, yet also intricate objects.

KIM YEON (born 1968 South Korea)

Kim Yeon’s sculptures encourage moments of meditation and contemplation

from the viewer. Representing streams and rivers captured in a state of stasis,

tranquility and calm, the solidity of Kim’s rocks and pebbles contrast with the

soft, liquid appearance of the resin they are encased in. Shimmering in the

lives and works in South Korea.
