Our tutors are all highly qualified specialists intheir subject ar ea. They use a mixtur e ofmotivation, encouragement and confidencebuilding to get the best out of students. Tutorsfocus on examination techniques and makeextensive use of past examination questions.

Classes are timetabled in 45 minute sessionsbetween 9.00am and 5.30pm. The collegeremains open daily until 7.00pm on weekdaysand is also open on Saturdays. These openingtimes are extended leading up t o publicexaminations in January and June each year.

Students are expected to take notes duringclass, with homework being assigned at theend of each lesson. Students must completeall assignments on time and we monitor allcoursework carefully to ensure that studentsmeet their deadlines.

Our ongoing assessment programmefeatures weekly tests in each subject andformal mock examinations once a month.Experience demonstrates that regular testingis vital for improving examination technique.

Students who underperform in mocks aretimetabled into extra classes and giv enadditional help outside of classes b y theirsubject tutors. They are also coac hed instudy skills and essay writing techniques, andgiven advice by their Personal Tutor as tohow best improve their performance.

Formal reports are compiled each month, and these are accessible online in t hepassword-protected secure area of ourwebsite. Parents and students can also viewprevious reports for comparison. THE AS-LEVEL PROGRAMME(LOWER SIXTH) This programme is designed f or studentswho have achieved a minimum of 5 passesat GCSE (grade B or abo ve), or a suitableequivalent. For some AS-level subjects, apass in the subject at GCSE is essential (seethe supplementary course outlines availableon the website). Most students elect t ostudy 4 subjects at AS-level in their first year.Critical thinking AS is offered as an optional5th subject.

THE FOUNDATION A-LEVELPROGRAMMEThis programme is designed f or studentsneeding to retake GCSE subjects, whilststudying 1 or 2 AS-levels, as a pre-cursor totheir full A-level programme.

THE A2 PROGRAMME (UPPER SIXTH)Students entering this programme will bestarting their second year of A-level study, having achieved success at AS-level. Virtuallyall students will be pr epared to sit somemodule examinations in January after thefirst term. These exams may be repeats ofsome AS modules, or a combination of ASand A2 modules.

THE ONE-YEAR A-LEVELPROGRAMMEStudents enrolling on this intensiveprogramme will have studied previously atA-level or are mature students. It is possiblefor certain A-levels to be taken in one yearstarting from scratch, with no pr eviousknowledge of the subject.

THE GCSE PROGRAMMEThe one-year intensive GCSE programmecovers the entire Key Stage 4 in a widerange of subjects, and is best suit ed tostudents who ha ve already completedGCSEs and wish to improve their grades, orare international students.

RESIT COURSES These are intensive 14 week courses gearedtowards students who are retaking A-levels.Most students on t hese courses ha vealready achieved a pass grade at A-level,generally grade C or B, and are seeking toresit one or tw o modules to improve ontheir grade.

Choosing the RightProgramme

At Albemarle, our carefully structured academic programmes are

tailored to suit the needs of individual students. Students meet with

their Personal Tutors to choose appropriate subjects and to plan a

strategy for success in examinations.

11

The AS-level is a qualification in its own right, equivalent to half of an A-level, and studentsgenerally complete their AS-levels in the firstyear of a two year A-level programme.

For the majority of subjects, t he new AS-levels, first introduced in September 2008,now comprise two units. In some cases thetwo units ar e not of equal w eighting, allowing for sitting of the first unit in Januaryof the first year. For some AS subjects, likethe sciences, the three unit structure hasbeen maintained.

Most Lower Sixth students at Albemarle willtake 4 subjects at AS level, but the flexibilityof our AS pr ogramme allows us t oaccommodate students wishing to take 2 oras many as 5 AS-levels, across a wide rangeof subjects.

AS students benefit from weekly University &Life Skills sessions covering UCASapplications, CV writing, job int erviews, public speaking ex ercises and debatingworkshops. Guest speakers from selectedprofessions such as medicine, accountingand journalism, as w ell as organised trips, provide a v aried range of studentexperiences. Lower Sixth students are alsoencouraged to participate in a wide range ofsporting activities at a nearby leisure centre:football, netball, aerobics and badminton arejust a few of the sports on offer.

During the Spring half-t erm Lower Sixthstudents are invited to take part in t heCollege cultural trip to a European city ofinterest. This is an immensely popular andenjoyable experience f or students andrecent destinations have included Istanbul,Barcelona, Prague and, in February 2009,Rome.

The AS-levelProgramme

The Advanced Subsidiary or AS-lev el exams were introduced to

address the lack of flexibility in t he post-16 curriculum and t o

encourage broader programmes of study, encompassing key skills in

numeracy, communication and information technology.

Page 14: Albemarle Prospectus

12

strategic planning is crucial ...... extensive help outside the classroom

Page 15: Albemarle Prospectus

13

The strategy for sitting modular ex ams iscrucial to success on this programme, andall students have a consultation session todiscuss this with their Personal Tutor, prior tothe start of their course. All students will sitsome modular exams in January, after thefirst term.

Most students on this programme will havealready completed one or two years of A-level study, but need t o improve theirgrades to get onto their chosen degreecourse. Retake students on this programmewill generally need to achieve higher A-levelresults than their first time counterparts, soit is essential t hat they get it right t hesecond time round.

Students are able to achieve success on thisprogramme not simply because of t heexcellent tuition at Albemarle, but alsobecause of t he support and help t heyreceive outside the classroom from subjecttutors as well as their Personal Tutor.

Our Personal Tutors have a wealth ofexperience dealing wit h studentsundertaking A-levels in a year and the advice

they give is tailored to suit the needs of eachindividual. We are able t o call on a v astnetwork of contacts at universities to assist usin getting students onto the degree courseof their first choice at a good university.

Francesca de Bono, our Director of Studies,is also a vailable to offer advice on anindividual basis, helping students wit h allelements of the UCAS admission processfrom the production of a uniquely attractivepersonal statement to the finishing touchesof the online forms and mock interviews. These are completed by early October, togive students the best possible chance ofreceiving offers.

In the past academic year students on ourone-year programme have achieved placesat many of the top UK universities includingCambridge, Imperial, L SE, Warwick,Edinburgh, Bristol and Durham.

We can also count a number of doct ors, dentists, accountants, computer scientists, lawyers, journalists, t o name but a f ewprofessionals, among our past students onthis course.

The One-year A-levelProgramme

This intensive programme is designed for students wishing to resit AS

and A2 modules over the course of a year, or those coming from non-

traditional backgrounds. All of our retake students gained a place at

the university of their first choice last year.

Italian medicine is renowned for research inthe areas of Cancer, Urology, Cardiovasculardiseases and Cardiac surgery, HIV/AIDS, Rarediseases, Preclinical and Human BiologicalSciences. So students study in an excitingenvironment, where breakthroughs arebeing made e very day. The InternationalMedical programme is taught in English.

Medical teaching at San Raffaele dates backto 1976 when it w as then part of t heUniversity of Milan. The new InternationalMedical programme, which will take its firstset of undergraduates in September 2010,has been dev eloped to produce doctorswho will not only be fully competitive in theEU medical community but who will also beready to practise in the USA. The SanRaffaele International MD Pr ogramintegrates the US pr ofessional licensureexaminations into the course curriculum.

The “new” MD programme is innovative andattractive due to the following:

Integrated ‘block’ curriculum, whichmeans that students will always be atthe centre of the teaching process:lectures in the morning, seeing

patients with those conditions studiedin the afternoon.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is usedthroughout the course so thatstudents work in groups to set theirown learning goals. This approachencourages pro-active learning, creative thinking and teamwork.

There is no traditional division betweenthe two pre-clinical years and the fourclinical years.

Students benefit from small class sizesand all students have an active role inthe teaching process.

All courses are taught in English, although students will be required totake lessons in Italian.

Further information on t he InternationalMedical programme can be obtained fromAlbemarle or indeed at the University OpenDay in April (NOT IN LONDON). Albemarle isthe sole UK representative for San RaffaeleMedical School.

The International MedicalSchool Programme

Albemarle has forged a partnership with the prestigious San Raffaele

Medical School affiliated to the University of Vita-Salute in Milan. Vita-

Salute is one of the top-ranking universities in Italy.
