Commonwealth Games

Poppy Stephen has been selected to carry the baton in the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton relay as it makes it's way around Queensland next year. What an honour and what great memories that will last a lifetime. Well done and well deserved, Poppy. Plans for 2018 As the year rolls on we are now focussing on finishing Term 4 and developing the direction for 2018. Next year will see the entire school focussed on differentiation of teaching and learning to ensure all students who are capable, achieve at least a ‘C’ standard in English, Maths and Science. This entails teachers:

• Knowing what students know and can do in these key areas.

• Identifying the next step in a student’s learning.

• Working to support the student to achieve this next step.

This process is already in place as part of the professional practice of our teachers. Next year we will focus on providing resources to support teachers as they work in their Year Level Teams to refine teaching practices, provide feedback loops to students and record progress. Partnerships and involvement of parents will be a key ingredient of this initiative.

School funds, including Commonwealth grants, will be used to employ Cooperative Teachers who will work with Year Levels to implement the differentiated teaching program. This is a major expenditure, and along with Lead Teachers in Science and Student Engagement will involve an investment of about $380 000 on top of the wages allocation from the Education Department. This, along with maintenance and support for curriculum resources will be allocated out of grants and other funds available in the school budget.

To ensure the school continues to provide facilities so that we can provide the opportunities for students to reach their potential, the P&C will be asked to consider the following items in their 2018 budget. We certainly appreciate all the hard work that goes into raising funds and want to make sure our students benefit from these efforts. I will be pleased to discuss the items in greater detail at the P&C meeting tonight:

• Auditorium extension and refurbishment - $200 000 approximately.

• Performing Arts Community Centre concept and design (project manager appointed) costs – Term 2.

Subsidy application mid-year - $20 000 approximately.

• Covered area and walkway to Mod 10 and 11 - $50 000 approximately.

• Air conditioners servicing and replacement $13 000.

• Curriculum support – Library, Science, Reading Books $20 000.

• First Aid Teacher Aide - $44 280.

• An additional 2 hours per week of strings tuition time – to be funded from performing arts events –

approximately $9000.

Approximate total is $359 000.

The budget is approved as part of the Annual General Meeting held in February 2018 and so there is time for consultation and consideration.

2018 YEAR 5 BYOL (LAPTOP) PROGRAM

Thanks to all of the parents who attended the 2018 Year 5 BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) information night last week.

This week all students in Year 4 will receive the official forms required to be part of the program. Please read the cover letter carefully as well as ALL of the information in the pack. Please take time to discuss the requirements and responsibilities with your child before returning the forms to school. Due date is Friday 3 November.

All students who return the completed forms and are able to provide a suitable laptop will be included in the program. Students will be advised of their 2018 class on the class changeover morning, Wednesday 6 December.

TRIVIA NIGHT

The school Chaplaincy Trivia Night was held on Saturday and was a great success. All funds raised support the work of our school chaplains at Albany Hills State School, Albany Creek State School and Albany Creek State High School. There were 38 teams with over 400 in attendance. Thank you to the Albany Hills community for their great support for this event. Albany Hills had several tables there, and were all very competitive. Lots of fun was had by all. – amend if needed after the event

DAY FOR DANIEL

Albany Hills SS will mark Day for Daniel this Friday 27 October. Students are encouraged to wear red accessories to school on that day – such as socks, hair ties, wrist bands. No hair colour, hairspray or face paint please. Teachers will discuss the meaning of the day with their classes during this week and parents are encouraged to do so as well at home.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

Teaching is the one profession that has the potential to influence the lives of so many young Queenslanders. World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated this Friday 27 October. This day provides the perfect opportunity to highlight the contribution and commitment of our teachers as well as the value of our great state education system.

STRINGS SELECTION PROCESS Each year, 15 students are chosen from all of the Year 2 classes to play a string instrument in Year 3 through to Year 6. Five for violin, five for viola and five for cello.

We have 70 string students throughout the school. The selected students must show a high level of musical aptitude. They must be reliable and very well organised. They must be achieving well in all classroom curriculum areas. This is essential because string lessons are in school time and classroom instruction continues when these students are at their instrumental lessons. String students must be independent workers. We expect a commitment of four years to enable us to form a strong string ensemble. The students cannot change to a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument in Year 4.

WOODWIND, BRASS AND PERCUSSION SELECTION PROCESS

40 students are chosen from all Year 3 and 4 classes each year. The students commence in Year 4 or Year 5 and continue to the end of Year 6. The selected students must show a sound to very high level of musical aptitude. They must be reliable and very well organised. They must be able to work independently to enable them to undertake the learning of an instrument. The students must be competent in all classroom curriculum because instrumental lessons are in school time. Classroom instruction continues when the students are having an instrumental lesson. A commitment of two years is expected for current Year 4 students and three years for current Year 3 students to enable us to form a concert band. If your child drops out of the program, that position can never be filled by another student.

2018 STUDENT LEADERS SELECTION

The process for the selection of our 2018 student leaders will take place across this term, culminating in the announcement of office bearers at our final whole school assembly on Tuesday 5 December. Students who are wishing to be eligible for a position must have their Senior Student form completed and submitted to their class teacher, in a folder with the necessary documentation, by 9.00 am on Monday 30 October. If all requirements have been fulfilled, it will be approved, signed off by the teacher and Mr Mason. The Senior Student badge will then be presented at an assembly at a later date. (Students will be advised of the date prior to presentation).

2018 CLASSES

Classes and year levels will soon be structured for 2018. Staffing is determined by Education Queensland and the number of teachers assigned to our school depends heavily on our “2018 Day Eight” enrolments. This means that early next year, the structure of some year levels and therefore your child’s class, may change depending on any changes determined by Education Queensland. We wish to remind parents again, that this school does not accept letters or verbal requests for particular classes, classmates or teachers. Please do not place our staff in a difficult position by attempting to make such requests.

MISSION TEAM

DONATIONS

The All Saints Albany Creek Catholic Church Mission Team have asked our school to once again assist them in their work to support their Sister Parish in Atauro Island, East Timor (Timor-Leste). The island is located about 30kms off the coast adjacent to Dili. The Mission Team have for some years now been collecting donations of school resources of all types (mainly pens, pencils, pads etc) to support the schools in that place.

There are hundreds of students and the schools are split into morning and afternoon classes to accommodate this, so plenty of resources are needed. There are kindergartens and primary schools in each village and one central high school. The local people have set up resource centres in the villages of Vila and Makadade where the community can come and access books. Anything that is to do with science is wonderful, as access to this is pretty limited. The teachers recently requested any simple word picture books to assist in the teaching of English to the primary school pupils. Naturally if you have any old resources like this, they would love them too. They also run adult education classes now.

Any form of craft resources would be most welcome too. Donations may be left at the Albany Hills State School office.

GALA DAY

In Gala Day sports this term, and last term, I have been doing school based sports, in which I started doing mulching with the other school based sporters. I found mulching surprisingly fun. My job was putting mulch in tidy trays so it could be moved to the right position. It started off hard but it got easier as we progressed through the pile of mulch. We were all glad when the drink break had arrived. When we finished drinking we started again as fast as lightning. It was all over by three o’clock and we all ran home with a sense of accomplishment from helping the school’s gardens grow, by keeping weeds down and preserving much needed soil moisture.

NUT ALLERGY REMINDER

I am writing this article as someone who suffers from a severe nut allergy. If I was to come into contact with certain nuts I would require immediate medical attention. There are also many other children at our school that are allergic to a variety of nuts.

At lunchtimes I have noticed a number of packets containing peanut products laying around on the floor and in the seating area. To help reduce the chances of any students going into anaphylactic shock could you please remember not to send any peanuts or any nut products to school. Thank you!

COMBINED BANDS NIGHT ALBANY CREEK CLUSTER

On 12 October our senior concert band participated in the combined bands night at Albany Creek State High School. We joined together with three primary schools as well as the junior and senior concert bands from the high school. Each school got to play a piece that they were working on in their band rehearsals and played that piece or pieces on the night.

The order of the schools performing was Eatons Hill, Albany Creek, Albany Hills, Albany Creek State High School junior band and Albany Creek State High School senior band. For Albany Hills concert band, we played two pieces called “The Nutcracker Suite Petite” and “Sesame Street” theme. When all the schools were finished their pieces of music, we all joined together and made one huge band. We got to play two pieces called “Limbo Rock” and “In the Court of the King”. We all enjoyed the night and we would like to thank Mrs Ormiston for organising the event and Mr Mason for helping us transport the heavy instruments up to the high school in his ute.

YEAR 5 CAMP

This year the year 5s went to Alexandra Headland for camp. We stayed at Alex Park Conference Centre for three days. On camp we did many activities such as Dominoes, Balloon Tower Challenge, Human Marble Run, activities on the oval and on the beach. For the balloon challenge, we were given forty long balloons to pump up and tie and then we would try and make the tallest tower with our balloons. My favourite activity was the Dominoes which was fun but frustrating. We would stack the dominoes in as long a line as possible without them falling over. Each of these activities were all about working together as a team. We also did a quiz that helped us work out what our personalities are. Although we were all exhausted, camp was fun, energetic and inspiring.
