(ARA) - Is your kitchen looking a littleworn? Or maybe you've grown tired ofyour decor? No need to call in theremodeling crew. Instead, turn yourSaturday into Satur-DIY, and with a fewsimple updates you can spruce up yourkitchen - and spirits - in no time at all.

According to a recent Kitchenand Bath Business survey, 22 percentof U.S. homeowners are planning toremodel, but may be holding off for

budgetary reasons. Small changesdon't have to come with a hefty pricetag. Here are a few ideas that don'ttake much time or money for a 24-hourkitchen facelift.

Fabulous fixtures

As the workhorse of thekitchen, start by upgrading your faucet- especially since an old or broken

faucet can age yourkitchen by decades.Pulldown faucetshave become oneof the most popu-lar choices fortheir conve-nience andhigh-arcstyling, andthe newBentonpulldownkitchenfaucetfrom Moen is agreat example. TheBenton faucet offers exquisitestyling in today's most popular fin-ishes - but it's what's inside that counts.Featuring Moen's unique Reflex pull-down system, Benton pulldown faucetsoffer smooth operation, easy move-ment and secure docking to keep thespray wand in place. Available at TheHome Depot from between $199 and$219, you can make a big splash -even with a small price tag - at thekitchen sink.

Walls that say "wow"

Are your current kitchen wallsblah or boring? Spice them up with abold new hue that will make yourkitchen decor pop. Not sure where toget inspiration? Take a cue from thecolor experts and designers at Pratt &Lambert paints, who just released their2012 color trends with a palette titled"Echo" that features classic, bold col-ors.

Luxurious lighting

New lighting can add life to anyroom - kitchens included. Shed newlight on your kitchen by forgoing the flu-orescent and replacing with stylish andfunctional pendant-style fixtures abovetask areas, such as the kitchen islandor countertops. Chandeliers can be anideal addition above table areas to cre-ate a focus point and dress up theentire room's decor.

Add storage and style with shelves

Installing shelves in yourkitchen is a great way to add more

space, as well as create a newlook. Install shelves

over your sink oraround theperimeter ofyour kitchento hold itemssuch as smallappliances, knick knacks, cookbooks orframed photos tokeep countertopsclear and uncluttered.

Customized cabinets

No need to splurge on newcabinets when you can very easily cus-tomize your own. With just a few mate-rials and hours, you can refinish orreface your kitchen cabinets. Theprocess is quite simple, just remove theold finish by sanding the fronts of thecabinets and then either stain orrepaint them to achieve your desiredlook. Or, for another option, replacewood panels with glass inserts for cus-tom-looking doors that will show offyour favorite dinnerware pieces.

Update appliance appearances

A stainless steel finish caninstantly transform and upgrade thelook of your kitchen. If purchasing newkitchen appliances isn't in the budget, acoat of paint may be just what the doc-tor ordered. Krylon offers a stainlesssteel spray paint with real flecks ofmetal to offer an authentic match for anupscale look. Remember to removehandles from the appliance and placemasking tape over areas you do notwant painted, and the end result is anew look that tailors to your kitchen'scolor scheme.

While it may seem like a daunt-ing task at first, these easy, one-daykitchen picker-uppers can provide arefreshing expression that you - andyour family - are sure to love.

(ARA) - Updating the decor in your homedoesn't have to be a long, laborious orexpensive process. Instead, get a littleinstant gratification by using paint to eas-ily refresh areas and items throughoutthe house. With a little cash and a freeweekend, you can makeover your houseright now.

Furniture facelift

Whether it's an old pair of chairs in theattic or a desk that's seen better days,it's easy to breathe new life into pieces offorgotten furniture with a fresh coat ofpaint. You can add interest and a pop ofcolor to any room. A semi-gloss finishworks best when painting furniturebecause it's easy to clean and hides anyimperfections. How to:

* Make sure the surface is clean, dulland dry.

* Prime with astain blockingprimer to ensurethe surface isproperly sealed. Thiswill help the paint go on evenlyand uniformly.* With a high-quality mini-roller, like thosefrom Purdy, apply the paint of yourchoice to achieve the best finish. Thesetools are versatile, lightweight, and canquickly and easily deliver a perfect finishwith smooth rolling action.* For extra protection, brush on two thin, even coats of water-based polyurethane.

Door do-over

Changing the color of an interior doorcan make a big impact in any room. Thekey to getting this update right: colorselection. Choose color similar to yourwalls for the door, because you don'twant the contrast to be jarring. Be sure

to paint the frame too, so the door does-n't seem to float in space, and use a

gloss or semi-gloss finish.

How to:

* Remove doorand hinges fromthe wall.* Make sure thedoor is clean dull anddry.* Prime bare, sandedwoodwork; there's noneed to prime previouslypainted surfaces if they're

in good condition. However, if you aregoing over an existing oil-based paintwith a latex paint, follow the instructionson the paint can on how to prime.* When applying paint or primer, workfrom the center of the door outwards inthe following order: molding, inside pan-els, rails, stiles* Once paint is completely dry, re-hangdoor using existing hinges.

Step to it

For an unexpected update, paint an areaof the house that doesn't usually receive

a lot of love - your stair risers. They canget nicked and scuffed easily, so a freshfinish - and color - can really perk up thestaircase. If you're unsure of whichshade to choose, cut and paint card-board pieces the same size of the risersand position them on the steps to get anidea of the effect.

How to:

* Dust risers with a broom and coversteps with masking paper; secure withpainter's tape.* Apply latex primer to wooden risers ormetal etching primer to metallic ones.Brush horizontally and let dry for at leasttwo hours. Mini rollers are another tool toconsider especially over metal. * Apply gloss, latex paint with a cleanbrush or mini roller. Let first coat dry twohours, then apply second coat.* Wait a day for the paint to cure andthen add a third coat for the mostdurable finish.

Remember: Painting is the easiest wayto make a dramatic and instant impact ona room. This weekend, get inspired andmakeover with these simple and inex-pensive projects.

Instant gratification: Painting projects to update your

decor in one weekend

(ARA) - As autumn fades and winterdraws near, homes begin to reflect theapproaching holiday season. For manyof us, the cooler weather also signifiesa lifestyle change.

In the south, cooler tempera-tures make this a great time of year forgardening and outdoor entertaining. For northerners, winter brings snowsports and indoor activities. Regardlessof your region, you can decorate for the

approaching holidays by bringing thebeauty of the outdoors in. Use naturalelements from the yard and garden tocreate a festive decor to not only recy-cle nature's bounty, but also perk upyour home for winter entertaining.

Outside:

In the north, annuals andperennials are done for the year. But,there are still plenty of other ways to

add color and interest toan outdoor space. Afterremoving all theremains of the sum-mer flowers, take along look at theremaining land-scape and addfocal points.

Solar land-scaping lights in con-tainers work greatnext to the front doorwith a spot light angled toaccent that beautiful tree.Want the apartment balcony toexpress a festive spirit? Set the moodand accent the desired focal points byincorporating other creative lighting. Trya string of festive lights across the bal-cony and evergreens in decorativepots.

Live evergreens of every sizeand shape are abundantly available inmost areas at this time of year. Youcan easily plant them in yards inwarmer regions, or pop them into acontainer to be placed on the frontsteps or along the walkway to welcomeguests.

Many types of these ever-greens are available in most homeimprovement stores nationwide. Addyour own lights for a personal touch.Create your own topiary form by usingchicken wire to structure a simple coneshape. Then, simply tuck in some mossor a few branches of greenery. Ask forsome discarded branches that havebeen trimmed from Christmas trees atthe local nursery or tree farm. Placeyour topiary in a large pot and wrapwith twinkle lights to welcome guests tothe front door. Come spring, transplantthese trees in the yard with Miracle-GroGarden Soil.
