May Membership Forum Luncheon Speaker: Peter Troedsson

At the end of June, Peter Troedsson will celebrate his one-year anniversary with the City of Albany. He came to Albany from Bothell, Washington, where he began a second career in municipal government as Bothell’s Deputy City Manager…following a 30-year active duty Coast Guard career. Highlights of his military service included assignments as Chief of Staff for the Eighth Coast Guard District in New Orleans during the Deepwater Horizon explosion and the resulting massive cleanup operations, and as a Military Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. His last active duty assignment was as Coast Guard liaison to the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He retired from military service in February 2014.

A career helicopter pilot, Captain Troedsson was Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Group/Air Station Astoria, Oregon, during the storm of December 2007. Astoria helicopter and boat crews rescued over 170 people during the severe weather and flooding associated with that storm. He also commanded Air Station Savannah, Georgia, and served in a number of operational aviation assignments, including an exchange with 771 Royal Naval Air Squadron in Cornwall, England. Peter was designated as an Instructor Pilot in the HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and was qualified in five other helicopter types. His staff assignments have included work on the staff of the Coast Guard's Resource Director, where he was responsible for developing and communicating the Coast Guard's capital investment plan.

Peter is Credentialed as a City Manager by the International City/County Management Association, and is a member of the Oregon City/County Management Association. He graduated from UCLA with a BA in Political Science and Scandinavian Languages. He holds a Masters in Public Administration from George Washington University, and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the US Air Force Air War College.

Jenny Gilmore-Robinson has served as the Executive Director of ABC House, the child abuse intervention center serving Benton and Linn counties, since March 2012. She received her bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a law degree from Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, La. Prior to law school, Gilmore-Robinson served as the chief country representative for the Philippines-based arm of the CityBridge Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based child advocacy foundation that launches and provides ongoing support to child abuse intervention centers in the Philippines.

During her legal career, Gilmore-Robinson spent three years as a court-appointed children’s attorney at Child Centered Solutions, where her caseload consisted entirely of representing children in high-conflict divorce and custody cases. She then joined the St. Andrew Legal Clinic, a non-profit family law clinic, representing low-income families in Family Court. In addition to her role as Executive Director of ABC House, Gilmore-Robinson is a Board Member of Samaritan Albany General Hospital, and a member of the Oregon Network of Child Abuse Intervention Centers, the Linn County Public Safety Coordinating Council, the Rotary Club of Greater Corvallis and Soroptimist International of Corvallis. Gilmore-Robinson resides in Albany with her husband Jake, a merchant mariner and maritime attorney, and their daughter Alice.

Do More – Say Less

Scott PiersonWood Castle Furniture2017-2018 Board Chair

We just experienced one of the most unusual NCAA college basketball seasons I have ever watched concluding with an unbelievable March Madness tournament for 2018. For one month, people who haven’t watched a game all year suddenly become “die hard” fans glued to the TV for every game, recap and Cinderella story. I happen to be a University of Michigan fan with extensive family throughout the state. Who would have thought I was a UP’er.

Basketball teams from youth to high school to college frame into their team building and season kickoff a theme phrase for the season. It’s something that has special meaning to them. They create a phrase by which they hope to accomplish their goal and build team unity. You might say it is their mantra. Then, fans will see that phrase portrayed across their warm up t-shirts. The Michigan Wolverines reminded me of that basketball tradition. So much that I changed my monthly “Letter from the Chair”, and caused a late night complete rewrite for this month. I wanted to submit two newsletters this month. But, I’ve been reminded many times that I’m already the most wordy Chair in history.

Michigan’s theme this year was “Do More … Say Less”. What inspirational words to define a season that culminated with a bid for the National Champion. I’ve always asked my teams to “Walk the Walk and Skip the Talk.” The world is full of people who are quick to talk the talk the talk the talk. As a matter of fact, the world is full of people that all they do is TALK, they never WALK away and they never DO. This month, I’d like to talk to you about TALKing, WALKing and DOing.

TALK-ing. I believe we have a problem that has grown exponentially and is out of control in our world. We have so many outlets to tell people what we think. Our voices can be heard around the world in seconds and they last forever. Social media, texting, letters to the editor all allow us to voice our opinions. But, it’s not our right to an opinion or our right to free speech that is the problem. The problem is with UN-informed, HATE-ful comments that have NO CONSEQUENCES. So many comments are made without investigation, without thought, without consideration for those it might hurt. These people think the world is WAITing for their comments and NEEDS to hear their opinion. I, myself, only listen to those individuals who have first EARNed my respect, INVESTIGATED the issues, CONSIDERED all of the options and consequences, and have THOUGHTFULLY presented the information that would ENCOURAGE me to do the same.

WALK-ing. I wish more people walked, not only for the great exercise, but to give them time to organize their thoughts, to cool down and separate the emotions from the data, and finally to consider the consequences if they make a comment. Walk away before you say something that you’re going to regret. Comments on Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are forever. Walking, or waiting to hit SEND on that email till tomorrow, would save us all a lot of grief and pain. Plus, look how healthy the world would become. In my own business and personal email accounts, I don’t delete unsent drafts. I keep all 101 of them, thus far, as a reminder of the mistakes and emotionally fueled words that I could have sent, but chose not to. I wish it were a bigger number but I’m working on it every day.

DO-ing. The most powerful statement that you can make in the world is through your own actions. We’ve all heard the proverbial phrase that “Actions speak LOUDER than Words”. Here’s one for you. I believe actions are SMARTER than words. If you’re passionate about something, get involved. If you don’t like something, fix it. If you want to influence our youth, mentor them and get them to think for themselves. If you want to start a movement, help others to believe it was their idea.

So when you’re frustrated and ready to post a comment, SKIP the TALK, GO for a WALK, and find a way to DO something about it. Truth by known, nobody really wants to hear our comments anyway. But, everyone wants to see our actions.

Personal BackGround: I was born in Portland, and have lived in the northwest for all of my life except for a brief stop in Kansas City, Missouri. I live with my beautiful wife and we have two rescue cats and a rescue dog who are all very sweet. I am a sports nut and have worked in the NBA, WNBA, and NFL. I am a proud graduate of the University of Idaho, go Vandals. I do some acting on the side and you can see me in the “Noodle Monster” episode of Portlandia, “Slapped The Movie”, or the upcoming music video for “Be Still” by Karyn Ann.

Business markeTinG niche: I help individuals with disabilities find meaningful work in the community. We provide qualified, pre-screened candidates for businesses looking to hire employees. It is a difficult but extremely rewarding job. Individuals with disabilities are still very marginalized in society and I enjoy helping them find a position that they enjoy as well as making them more visible in their communities.

BiGGesT issue FacinG alBany: I don’t believe it’s an issue that just affects Albany, but it is still difficult to overcome an initial reaction or judgement when I let businesses know that I am trying to help individuals with disabilities find work. People have preconceived notions of what an individual with a disability is capable of, and I hope that more businesses will be open to giving my clients a chance so they can see what amazing work they are capable of doing, and so that the businesses can reap the benefits that come with hiring individuals with disabilities.

chamBer involvemenT: I’m a regular at Greeters and attend every week when my schedule allows it. I have been to the Business Expo the past three years.
