Albacete stimulates sustainable action

Since summer 2000, Albacete boasts 1,500 containers for organic waste, which is collected daily. Since September 2002, Albacete recycles in 4 areas (with three containers: paper, bottles, and cans and tins),transforming in a recycling plant this waste into raw material for its industrial use. This plant also lends its service in other parts of the province.

The men and women of Albacete recycle selectively in an Ecopark since 2006. There, they recycle metals, paper, computer materials, plastic, oils, toxic waste, debris, wood, etc. In this way, they save manytrees, transforming their waste into raw material for industry.

But the most relevant event concerning the environment has been the Renovation of Abelardo Sánchez Park. This has represented a work done with the greatest of effort and care, where the techniciansof the municipality and scientists of our university managed to make the forgotten, old space a vigorous, new garden. Our park turned 100 years old with renovated hopes.

In the heart of Abelardo Sánchez park, children and teenagers are taught the secrets of plant and the animal kingdoms that exist in our city, in the Nature Center. This is a public space that has beenrecovered, thanks to the demands of the ecologist group, in order to make Albacete's citizens aware of the fact that both plants and animals make part of our lives even in the heart of the city.

Urban sports and environment came together when the Channel's Trail was inaugurated. Athletes, hikers and cyclists go along this trail, which evokes memories of the old roads of our city. The transformationof the channels in ruins which emerged in Albacete, and, particularly, the María Cristina's Channel, into hiking trails bordered by trees and a fence all along the trail, represents another achievement in thehistorical recovery of the city. The 24 km. that can be already enjoyed (a third part of the total of the project) constitute the best legacy for the future urban designs of the metropolis. In the Sierra Procomunalof Albacete-Chinchilla (name of a mountain range), which stretches 9,000 hectares of these two nearby locations, the attempt to recover the nature continues, with the forest conservation works, the buildingof a viewpoint, the “Wood of the Words”, and the improvement of the conditions for the practice of paragliding.

The Ismael Belmonte's Garden, located at the urban spot known as the “ensanche” (or wide street), the adapted Altozano's square and fountain, or the new fountain in the road that leads onto the motorwaythat connects the city with Valencia, are the latest achievements, which have contributed to the modernization of the city, which has become the European city that it is.

The metropolis will improve with these new 'green' paths, which connect with the old railway, transformed now into a hiking trail, and with the traditional cattle tracks.

The Waste Processing Center boasts a recycling plant and a chemical spills spot shared by the city of Albacete, several locations in the north of the province and many others in the south of Cuenca
