The days leading into the month of November were some ofthe busiest ever. We had a very successful Fall Walk celebrationthe last week in October along the Buck Creek Trail. The weatherwas terrific and along with the great food and entertainmentmade this a very special day. I really enjoyed meeting and talk-ing with so many of you along the trail. I want to express specialthanks to my right-hand man Mr. George Henry for all of theorganizational skills along with those of Mr. Ricky Nance ourPark Director. Also, all of the park staff worked extremely hardin the days leading to the event as well as that day. These are thepeople that make so many great things happen for all of us everymonth. The Fall Walk was the gateway to a successful celebra-tion of Halloween the next day. Many of our subdivisions andchurches were covered up with young people trick or treatingand having fun. We had little if any mischief or trouble so aHuge Thank You for the supervised fun.

I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving and were ableto spend time with friends and family. I want to thank the FirstBaptist Church of Alabaster for hosting their annualThanksgiving lunch to honor our seniors. The food and companywas excellent as usual. Those of you involved in planning thisevent probably do not realize just how much everyone enjoys andlooks forward to this annual meal. Thanksgiving and Christmascan be very lonely times for many of us and this is particularlytrue for our senior citizens. These events go so very far byspreading love through our community.

I want to remind all of you that we will have our annualChristmas Parade on December 4th which is sponsored by theAlabaster Beautification Board. If you see a member of the boardon parade day, please give them a thank you for their months ofplanning and hard work. Our parade is one of the largest, if notthe largest, in Alabama. Many communities have discontinuedtheir celebrations due to costs but thanks to all of the volunteersupport for our parade, we have been able to continue the tradi-tion. The parade would not be possible without the support ofthe Alabaster Police Department. Please thank our officers aswell as the support that we receive from the Shelby CountySheriff’s Office.

With all of these wonderful things happening in our city, it iseasy to forget that we have many neighbors that need financialassistance or simply understand that someone cares and reallyloves them. The holidays are times that seem to intensify andmagnify the bad things that happen to us, our families, andfriends. Even in loving and supportive families, individuals candevelop problems that appear so large that there are no answersexcept suicide. These situations have been some of the hardestfor me to work through during my ten years in office and I hesi-tate to discuss them here but people need help. Suicides comewithout warning and the result is devastating to the families andthe entire community. I ask that all of us be vigilant this holidayseason for friends and family members that may be having thesethoughts and need our help. Let us send the message that we alllove them and we want to listen, understand, and help. Lovedones in these situations are often unable to express their needs tothose that they love and that love them. This is where we canassist and maybe be the catalyst to turn things around and helpthem to see that they are loved and needed in the family andcommunity. Please reach out to others with your heart thisChristmas season. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas!

A smoking ordinance was unanimously passed by the Alabaster City Council on October 21st. This was defi-nitely a victory for the health and well-being of Alabaster residents. I feel that the ordinance is fair because it

does give restaurants and hotels a choice on whether to be a non-smoking or smoking facility. If you have any questions about theordinance, please feel free to contact your councilperson or City Hall.

Many families are still feeling the effects of the economy. During this holiday season, please remember to "Buy Alabaster First". It brings much needed revenue to our city and everyone can benefit in the long run. I remain confident that Alabaster will staystrong and continue to prosper.

Spend some quality time with family and friends by coming out to the Alabaster Christmas Parade on December 4th. ThisChristmas I am so grateful for my husband, Rob, and our three daughters, Hope, Molly and Katherine Jane. I wish you and yourfamily a Merry Christmas and many blessings during this holiday season.Blessings,Sophie Martin

I want to spotlight a great group of residents this month that help us all. The Friends of the AlbertL. Scott Library is a fantastic group of dedicated people. This year alone they have raised and then

donated $6,000 to the library to help with programs and books. This is not a onetime deal, but is something that they doannually. The Friends play a vital role in support of our community library. I urge you to become a member or volun-teer for this great organization. For more information you can contact the library or ask any staff member. You can alsofind them on Facebook.

It is Christmas time again! Please support all our local businesses. This is when they make or break their year, so Iencourage you to take the time to say thank you to them for investing in your community.

This is also a great time of year to stop and count our many blessings. I count my family and friends among themany, many blessings that GOD has given me. I hope that not only during this season of giving, but all year we remem-ber to think of others, show kindness, generosity and patience.

Wishing you all the very best and GOD’s Blessings.Merry Christmas,

Adam

I hope everyone had the chance to give thanks with family and friends. With the next year just a few shortweeks away, we can look back happily on 2010 as a year that could have been a lot worse than it was. It seems

that money is starting to move about a bit more as we head into the Christmas season. Let us pray that we have seen the worst as faras our economy. The city was able to keep everyone employed while others cut back heavily. The senior center was opened, paid forfrom day one by use of dedicated funds in reserve and the kindness of our friends in the county. These rays of hope, combined withanother conservatively sculpted budget, allows us to look forward to 2011 with a smile rather than a shudder.

Fall Walk 2010 was a roaring success, with perfect weather, strong participation and great fun for all. The Buck Creek Trail was ondisplay, and it was very apparent that the Park and Rec team has worked very diligently to make it a beautiful showcase. Thanks toall the team that have taken a beautiful natural area and made it something for all of us to enjoy thoroughly.

Finally, on a more personal note, I ask your prayers for our son Kyle as he deploys to Afghanistan on December 4th, when he willjoin our neighbor Jason Pohl who is already in service to America there. We recently welcomed Rick Coleman from a tour, andwould ask you to tell me of someone you know that is over there so I may add them to my prayer list. Finally, I wish you and yoursa very Merry Christmas. Grace and peace, Bob

Last month I hope everyone completed their civic duty by voting in the General Election November 2nd. Ihad the privilege of working the polls again, and although it is the toughest single day a person can work, it

is also one of the most satisfying. It is so much more complicated than most people can imagine. The fact that it can be done at allwith such a high degree of efficiency and accuracy is a testament to poll workers everywhere. If you voted last month, I thank you. If you did not, I challenge you to do your civic homework, get involved in what is going on around you and to participate in theprocess by voting. I can't help but to believe we would all benefit from the process.

Locally, the Friends of the A.L. Scott Library were able to donate $3,000 to our library for programs for children and adults andfor special needs, such as repainting the table and chairs in the children's area. The Friends have also organized a book fair with theAlabaster Books-A-Million store for Tuesday, December 14. Between the hours of 4 - 8 PM, the friends will greet customers and handout vouchers. Vouchers presented at checkout will have 10% of the purchase price donated to the Friends.

For the 3rd year in a row the Alabaster Water Board has earned the Alabama Department of Environment Plant OptimizationAward for Well #1 filtration. This month the board will consider bids for a similar plant to filter our last well. It also is my duty toreport that long time AWB Board member and Chairwoman Cathy Bradford has tendered her resignation. Please join me by thank-ing her for years of dedication and service. To list everything she has helped do for us would take this entire column.

In case you have not heard, or just forgotten, please allow me to remind you of our Annual Christmas ParadeSaturday, December 4th. As always it will be one of the largest parades in Alabama and we will be throwing somecandy! Have a Merry Christmas - Keep in Touch.

There’s a lot happening at the Albert L. Scott Library this Christmas seasson:Gingerbread Workshop December 14 at 6:15 p.m. Families should sign up in advance and pre-pay $3.00 per house. If paying bycheck, please make it out to the library. Children ages 6 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. The workshop willbe in the mobile unit.Holiday Children's Party December 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. It will be a fun-filled morning featuring Santa and Mrs.Claus, a horse-drawn carriage, and gingerbread man decorating. The free activities are in the library, in the mobile unit and onlibrary grounds. Carriage ride tickets will be available in the library lobby. Holiday Sing-Along with Mr. Mac and Chuck King December 15 at 3:30 p.m. Come join musical story teller Mr. Mac and fellowmusician Chuck King for holiday music and merry-making! Everyone is invited to this very special program in the 'Tunes & Tales'time slot that takes place in the mobile unit. Children ages 6 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. An Evening with Santa and Mrs. Claus December 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Santa & Mrs. Claus will listen to children'sChristmas wishes in the library building.

You probably heard we passed a smoking ordinance last month. My position is that I feel govern-ment (especially local government) butts into business too much so I personally would not vote for a

total smoking ban. However, I voted for this ordinance because it gives everyone a choice. The business gets to chooseif they want to be a smoking or non-smoking facility and has to post that on the door. The customer has a choice to goin or not BEFORE they actually enter the facility. Serves the purpose, I think.

My article last month about voting gave a few folks the impression I didn't like the Tea Party. Not true. While I'mnot a tea party member, I think they put some issues into the spotlight that need to be spotlighted. My article waspoorly written but my point (in my mind anyway) was that some people are presenting themselves as a Tea Party affili-ate in order to get votes when in reality their philosophies are much different. My goal for that article was simply toencourage people to vote and to do some homework on who they choose. Sorry for the confusion.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

PHILLIP REID You can forget the old

joke about having enoughkids in the family to fieldyour own basketball or base-ball team. At the Reidhousehold in Montevallo, they probably joked aboutstarting their own firedepartment.

In reality, the Reidscould make a strong case forthat because they certainlyhave the qualifications. BillReid, the patriarch of thefamily is the long-time firechief of Montevallo. Tripletsons Mike, Danny andPhillip and youngest sonAndy all work for local firedepartments - Mike andDanny in Pelham whilePhillip and Andy serve inAlabaster.

Phillip, who has justcompleted his 16th yearwith the Alabaster Fire &Rescue Service, was the firstof the Reid brothers to enterthe profession on a full-timebasis. After serving as a lieu-tenant with AF&RS for 10years, he became a battalionchief in April following theretirement of Eddie Harris. As a battalion chief, Phillipis responsible for the day-to-day operations of his shiftand manages staffing issuesand personnel matters. He

also serves as incident com-mander on major calls thatoccur when he's on duty.

"My father's work as avolunteer with the firedepartment in Montevallohad a big influence on mydecision to become a fire-fighter," Phillip said. "That'sbasically how I got into it.We always hung around thefire station when we wereyounger and it was a way oflife for all of us. There wasnever any question of whatI was going to do when Igrew up."

Phillip joined thedepartment in Alabaster in1994 after taking collegecourses at Montevallo andearning certification as anEMT at UAB. He also hasbeen certified in handlingemergency-response rescuesinvolving trenches, highangles and confined spaces.

Phillip's job often press-es him and his fellow fire-fighters into situations thatvary from one day to thenext. That's one of thethings he likes about his job.

"Nothing is ever thesame from day to day," hesaid. "Each day is different. You never know what's instore. It's a very satisfyingcareer to be in and every

whenever they're not play-ing baseball and frequentlyvisit the mountains and thebeach. Phillip is also anavid golfer.

So, is it reasonable toassume that Carter andGrayson will follow in thefamily tradition of becom-ing firefighters when theygrow up?

"If that's somethingthey want to do, then I'mnot going to discouragethem," Phillip said.

firefighter I know loves hisjob. It's a calling and a wayof life for us. It's especiallygratifying to know we'reserving the community andhelping people out in anyway we can."

Phillip and his wifeKelly are the parents oftwo boys, nine-year-oldCarter and six-year-oldGrayson. Kelly is a book-keeper with the City ofPelham. Carter andGrayson are both heavilyinvolved in baseball andPhillip serves as coach ofhis youngest son's team. That's just another way inwhich Phillip is followingin his father's footsteps. Inaddition to his volunteerwork with the Montevallofire department, Bill servedas a longtime high schoolteacher and baseball coach.

Garden Tip - Winter is an importantperiod in the gardening season, moreso than you’d think. While winter isin full swing, compost is continuingto decompose and get ready for usefor the spring. Additionally, winter isa great time to grow cover cropswhich will help improve the soil forthe next season. There are also plenty of plants thatyou can grow during the fall and win-ter, both indoors and out. Also, youcan strategically plan a winter gardenso that you can enjoy color and attrac-tive plants all year long.

SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS PROGRAMSThe Christmas season is

in full swing now, whichmeans it's time to considerhelping out with the GreaterBirmingham SalvationArmy's annual holiday pro-grams.

The Salvation Armyholds two major charitableprograms each year, includ-ing the Angel Tree programand the well-known RedKettle campaign.

The Angel Tree programis designed to assist low-income families who mightotherwise have trouble cele-brating the holiday. Localfamilies and businesses areencouraged to adopt a paper"angel" that represents alocal boy or girl in need ofassistance. That means pro-viding new clothes and toysfor that child so that theycan experience the spirit of

their division in theBirmingham Bash soccertournament. The girlsplayed two games onSaturday winning bothgames (4-2, 2-1).

In their semi-final gameSunday morning, the girlsfound themselves in a badsituation down by two goalsat the half. A strong per-formance from everybodyon the team allowed them tocome back in the second halfand win the game.

In the championshipgame they faced theBriarwood U17 team, whohad beaten the Blaze duringthe regular season. The girlsknew the game would be avery hard fought defensivegame, and it was. The gamewent into overtime, and vic-tory was decided by a penal-ty kick shoot out that was

ultimately won by theAlabaster 95 Blaze.

Stacy Balaam (coach) andJeremy Stacey (assistantcoach) would like to thankall the girls for their relent-less effort. Special thanks toAide Arreola for the moralsupport she gave her team.Aide was injured earlier inthe season. They alldid an awesome job shoot-

ing on goal and hitting theback of the net. The middleof the field was controlledby Mackenzie Dowdle,Michaela Graber, MakaylaWright and AshleyGardner. Their ability tospread the field during theattack was a key element toopening up the opposingdefense. The defenseplayed a hard tactical gamewith outstanding perform-ances from Mary Milliron,Lindsey Harrison,

They didan excellent job at breakingup the attack and confusingthe opposing offense.Bethany Rogers, with sever-al saves in goal, really per-formed excellent, especiallyin the shoot-out in thechampionship game. YMCA OPENS NEW FAMILY BRANCH The YMCA recently

opened a new family branchin Alabaster off Highway119. The new branch ishoused in the old Body ShopHealth Club at 117 PlazaCircle. The group purchasedthe building, along with itsexercise equipment, inSeptember and opened thenew facility in October.

"We closed on the busi-ness Sept. 30 and openedOct. 1 as the AlabasterFamily Branch YMCA," saidLane Vines, the executivedirector.

Vines said the new facili-ty will allow the YMCA toserve a broader range of thepopulation here inAlabaster.

"We'd wanted an adulthealth and wellness pres-ence here for some time. When this opportunity cameabout, we were excited totake the next step, because itallowed us to serve the com-

munity from a health andwellness perspective," saidVines.

The building is locatedadjacent to the YMCA athlet-ic fields, which are behindthe Masonic lodge. Vines saidthe proximity to the fieldsmade it an attractive location.

"We own 39 acres of landright in the heart of Alabasterand have used that land formany years as our soccerfields," he said. "It madesense from a strategic stand-point that this would be agood location for us to offerhealth and wellness pro-grams and serve the adults inthe community."

According to Vines, thenew building isn't the onlychange in the works. TheYMCA's current plan is tobuild an adjoining buildingto house the children's pro-grams. The children's pro-grams are currently housedin the YMCA off Seventh

LOCAL CITIZEN FIGHTS FIREA local resident recently

played a major role in put-ting out a dangerous fire in autility shed that, according toneighbors, could have spreadto homes in the area.

Josh Wood, who livesbehind the townhomeswhere the fire occurred, responded quickly when aneighbor's storage shedcaught on fire this pastSeptember. According toneighbor Phillip Naro, Woodpushed his way through aprivacy fence to get to theshed and then battled theblaze with his own fire extin-guisher.

"The young man grabbeda fire extinguisher and cameup through the cul-de-sac.He climbed the hill barefoot-ed, carrying a big old fireextinguisher," said Naro. "Itwas engulfed in flames, buthe used the extinguisher andgot the bulk of it down."

Naro said that the quick-

acting neighbor preventedthe fire from spreading tothe row of townhomesalong the street.

"It was bad," said Naro."If it had been anotherseven minutes and gotten tothe townhomes, it'd havebeen all over. Because itwas so hot it would've melt-ed the siding off of thisplace and it really would'vetaken off."

Thanks to Mr. Wood'squick actions, however, thatdidn't happen.

"If he hadn't done whathe'd done, we'd have losteverything," said Naro.

According to Naro,Alabaster Fire and RescueService soon arrived on thescene to finish off the job.Thankfully, no one wasinjured.

SMOKING ORDINANCE OK’D The Alabaster City

Council recently passed acitywide smoking ordinancethat will require city busi-nesses to declare whether ornot they will allow smokingor not.

The ordinance waspassed unanimously duringthe City Council's meetingon Oct. 21. According toCity officials, the new ordi-nance will be implementedin 2011.

Each year, when arestaurant or hotel submitsits business license, it willbe required to indicatewhether it will be a smokingor non-smoking. The busi-ness will then be required topost a notice at eachentrance to the establish-ment indicating its smokingstatus.

According to officials, the ordinance represents acompromise between thetwo more extreme positions

that were presented. Someresidents promoted a city-wide smoking ban for publicplaces, while others advocat-ed no government interven-tion at all.

Under the new ordi-nance, businesses will stillbe allowed to make thechoice for themselves as towhether or not they want tobe smoke-free.

If an establishmentchooses the smoke-freeoption, there is to be nosmoking allowed at allinside the building. Thosethat do allow smoking, canhave an area for non-smokers.

The City held two publichearings on the issue beforethe vote.

As 2010 comes to a close, you should take some time toreview your taxes. Here are a few hints on items that may be ableto lower your tax bill that should be done now instead of April 15th,when you complete your taxes.1. Review your investments: If capital gains are high, considertaking a loss to offset some of the capital gains income or viceversa. The capital gains rate will increase in future years. If youare unsure of the rate for 2010, give us a call.2. Defer income: Unless you have reason to believe that next yearwill bring you a higher income and move you into a higher personalincome tax bracket, you may want to defer income until after thefirst of the year. If you are self-employed, for example, send the lastinvoices out late in December so you will more likely receive pay-ment in January. 3. Use up your flex spending plan: If you have a flexible spend-ing plan, which means you have put aside tax-free earnings tocover medical and dental expenses through a plan offered by youremployer, you need to use it up. Make doctor appointments nowand buy necessary medical supplies that are covered in the plan. 4. Pay your January 1st mortgage payment on or beforeDecember 31st: This allows you to take an additional deductionfor interest paid. Give the payment time to get to your lender for1099 reporting so don't write the check on December 31st. 5. Teachers, take a deduction from your students: You can stilltake up to a $250 deduction on materials purchased to make thelearning experience better for your students. This deduction is alsoapplicable for principals and others who are employed in a school.Anything over the $250.00 can be deducted on your schedule A.Keep your receipts. 6. If you're self-employed, stock up: This is the time to buy all ofthe business equipment and supplies you haven't yet purchased.Make sure to mark and save your receipts. 7. Make charitable donations: If you have extra cash, donatemoney to charity. Save the receipts and use the charitable dona-tions as deductions on your tax return.

These are some of the ways in which you can make appropriatechanges to lessen your tax bill; however, there may be more, depending on your situation. If you are uncertain, please give us acall and we will be happy to discuss other alternatives that may bebeneficial to you.
