PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS

The proposed Shell Belt and Coden Belt Roads Living Shoreline and Point aux Pins Living Shoreline projects would be located in Mobile County in the Portersville Bay portion of the Mississippi Sound.

The proposed Point aux Pins Living Shoreline project would stabilize shoreline located near Point aux Pins which has shown evidence of erosion over time. In addition to protecting shorelines, the proposed Shell Belt and Coden Belt Road Living Shoreline project would enhance the growth of planted native marsh vegetation.

As the implementing Trustee for both proposed projects, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources would employ living shoreline techniques that utilize natural and/or artificial breakwater material to dampen wave energy to protect shorelines, while also providing habitat and increasing benthic secondary productivity.

Construction activities for both proposed living shoreline projects would include placement of intertidal breakwater materials that may utilize artificial Wave Attenuation Units. The specific construction techniques and designs would be selected to maximize project effectiveness and meet regulatory requirements. Over time, the breakwaters are expected to develop into reefs that support benthic secondary productivity, including, but not limited to, bivalve mollusks, annelid worms, shrimp, crabs, and small forage fishes.
