  • The Holy Family

Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family. Much of what we hear about today in the media regarding families seems to involve violence, greed and lack of communication. We often do not hear about the good things that happen in our families. I have come to know many families here at St. James the Apostle Parish over the years and can truly say that many good things are happening in our families. I can tell how much parents love their children and how the children come to respect their parents. Certainly no family has a perfect life. Human nature seems to dictate that there will be conflicts at times, but overall family life is doing well. One thing we must make sure of it that the quality of our family life does not diminish. We must always be on guard to insure that open communication, understanding, forgiveness and above all, love, are a part of everyday family living. Today, we look at the life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph together as a family. We see the virtues that they exhibited and try to make them a part of our own family life. Love, respect and obedience are highlighted in the Gospel regarding the Holy Family. Let us try to make those virtues a reality in our own families not just at this time of the year, but every day of our lives. Father David

    Thank You

A sincere “Thank You” goes out to all who helped in any way to make our Christmas celebrations truly prayerful and inspiring. Whether you helped decorate, served at one of the liturgies as greeter, usher, set-up and Eucharistic Minister at our “parking lot Masses,” or supported the parish in some other way, including with your generous financial gifts to the parish, I sincerely thank you.

On behalf of the parish staff, I would like to wish all of you a very blessed and happy new year! May our Lord be with you and bestow upon you all that you need as you serve Him with renewed spirit and love! Father David

Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses this Weekend

To celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family this weekend, the Knights of Columbus, Council #9806 of St. James the Apostle Parish will sponsor a special prayer at each of the Masses.

After Communion at each Mass families will be invited to pray the special prayer led by the celebrant. In this prayer, each family of the parish consecrates themselves to the Holy Family and devotes themselves to the ideal model of familial love set by Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Through this consecration, each participant is consciously choosing to be a beacon of God’s love through His Church. We hope you will join us in praying this prayer on the Feast of the Holy Family.

Epiphany Home Blessing Card with Chalk Now Available at the Ministry Center

On Sunday, January 3rd we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. Praying an Epiphany Home Blessing and marking the lintel with chalk over the main entrance of the home is an ancient tradition that not only places God at the entrance of your home, it places your entire family under his protection.

Packets containing the prayer of blessing, along with a piece of chalk are now available for pickup at the Ministry Center during office hours. You are invited to take the Prayer of Blessing and the chalk to use it while invoking God’s blessing upon your home.

Take the blessed chalk and first write the initials of the three Wise Men, connected with Crosses, over the inside of your front door (on the lintel, if possible). Then write the year, breaking up the numbers and the year so that they fall on both sides of the initials. It should look like this, for example 20 C+M+B 2 1 with the “21” being the millennium and century, the “C” standing for the first Wise Man, Caspar, the “M” standing for Melchior, the “B” standing for Balthasar, and the “21” standing for the decade and year. It is also popularly believed that the Kings’ initials stand for “Christus mansionem benedicat” (“Christ bless this house”).

  • A Reflection on the Feast of the Holy Family

Holy persons, holy family. It is, perhaps, easy to see the holiness in the Holy Family and not in our own. But holy we are, too. We are holy because of God’s loving-kindness and God living among us. Pope Francis says this clearly in Gaudete et Exsultate on the call to holiness in today’s world. Let us look to the saint next door. Let us also be the saint next door. God, in creation, makes us holy. We are called to remain in holiness. Though we need help from God and from others, it is possible for each one of us. • Who can I name as a saint next door? • What do they do and say, not do and say, to

make this so? • What one holy and mercy work will I do in this

Christmas season? • What will I do and say to bring holiness to this

    sometimes-messy world?

A big thank you to parishioner Phil Mueller of Mueller Production Services, whose generous donation of many hours of time and talent have made it possible for us to continue this ministry. (www.muellerproductionservices.com)

Thank You to Our Reopening Volunteers!

As we wrap up 2020, we want to acknowledge the fact that since our reopening, none of our Masses, Confessions, Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals, First Communions, First Reconciliations or any other sacramental event could have happened without the assistance of our St. James Parishioners who have stepped forward to serve as members of our St. James Reopening Team. It takes a village to open the doors of a church for worship and sacrament safely in the middle of a global pandemic and these wonderful men and woman keep coming, day after day, week after week to make it happen! So if you see one of them when you come to church, please be sure to thank them for their sacrifice and love for their fellow parishioners.

And if you want to become a member of this AMAZING team, we would love to have you! Email [email protected] if you want to get involved.
