General description

Introduction

The AIR-FIT® : creating a comfortable indoor climate with

minimal energy usage and low installation space. The active chilled beam has been developed for HVAC

systems where the air handling installation supplies ne-cessary ventilation air, while cooling and heating energy

is mainly transported by water. As a result the required airhandling unit and duct work can be reduced. The installed height makes the AIR-FIT® most suitablefor projects with limited ceiling. This application can leadto a lower ceiling void height in the case of new building

constructions.

System technology

The system technology is based on the venturi effect ofthe special shaped nozzles causing induction of room airinto the primary airow.

The conditioned air from the central air handling unit willbe injected by the nozzles into the mixing section of theunit. The room air directly beneath the unit will be gui-ded through a perforated plate or linear bar and the heat

exchanger. The mixture of conditioned primary air andheated or cooled room air will be transported along theceiling by two integrated slot diffusers.

Relatively large quantities of room air are being guided

through the heat exchanger by this induction technology. A small difference between supply water temperatureand room air temperature is required. This will prevent

condensation during the cooling mode.

Application area

The active chilled beam is especially suited for ofces.

Two ventilation air changes will do for standard ofce

spaces (occupation 8 to 10 m2 per person). With thisprimary air volume, sufcient air will be induced to

compensate the typical sensible cooling load of approxi-mately 50 W/m2.Even when heating is needed, ventilation in winter time

will be no problem for the chilled beams.Generally meeting rooms need more ventilation air than

ofces. This can be achieved by using multiple and/or

larger models. However with more than 5 air changes

(circulation) per hour, the risk of draught increases. In

that case different solutions are recommended.

Other applications are:

- schools- hospitals- warehouses- laboratories- dormatories

Application for meeting rooms

Realization of a comfortable indoor climate needs extraattention. This will be illustrated in the next example.

We assume a meeting room with following dimensions:L x W x H = 6.0 x 3.6 x 2.7 m (total volume of 58 m 3).Based on a maximum occupation of 12 persons and aminimum fresh air ow of 30 m3/h, primary air ow will be

360 m3/h. With an induction factor of only 2, there will be

720 m3/h supplied into the room. This results in 12 airchanges (circulation) per hour. When covering cooling and heating load, there will be

no problem; however the room air supply principle of

the active chilled beam (compared to well operating slot

diffusers) is less suitable for 12 air changes (circulation)per hour.In this case we recommend the use of high performance

diffusers combined with one of our conventional systems.

In this document, different system applications are

described. The system on page 36 combines active

chilled beams in ofces, with fan coil unit systems in

meeting rooms. In these cases it will not be necessaryto adjust the overall system.

Our technical staff will be able to assist with project

specic applications.

Air distribution in the room

The specic shape of the supply slot diffusers create two,

opposite air patterns from the active chilled beam along

the suspended ceiling. These air patterns (throw) provide good distribution of

supply air into the room. The velocity of the supply air

along the suspended ceiling creates the Coanda-effect;velocity differences in the cool air stream will press this

air stream against the suspended ceiling, thus preventing

the cool air from entering the comfort zone prematurely.

It is important, with similar air patterns, that the suspen-ded ceiling is at and free of any obstacles. Especially

light xtures situated close to the slots, can inuence the

necessary Coanda-effect.

General description

comfort zone

Facade-orientation

Provided the earlier mentioned aspects are taken into

account, orientation of the active chilled beam with regard

to the facade has no inuence on the operation.

There are two different applications for the active chilled

beam in ofces with regard to the facade: perpendicular

or parallel to the facade. The choice between perpendicular and parallel to thefacade will be determined by:

• Aesthetics (tting into the pattern of the suspended

ceiling).• Level of exibility to create ofces within the oor plan

• Number of active chilled beams (purchase and instal-

  lation).

• Available distance for the throw; the air must have theopportunity to mix before it reaches the comfort zone

• Disturbances in suspended ceiling which might inu-ence air pattern, like lighting xtures.

• Disturbances in the facade or oor, like radiators or

oor convectors, that might inuence the air pattern.

Product presentation

Features of the AIR-FIT® active chilled beam

High capacity:

The active chilled beam has a high cooling and hea-ting capacity and is suitable to ventilate, cool and heat

(mainly) ofces.

Compact in size:

With a chilled beam size of only 1500 x 300 mm, 10 m2 is supplied with sufcient ventilation air, cooling and

heating. In addition the active chilled beam is relatively

light weight and needs minimal installation space.

Simplicity in mounting:

With a width of 295 or 595 mm, the active chilled

beam can be perfectly integrated into suspended

ceilings with exposed T or bolt-slot systems for inter-mediate mounting.

Multi-nozzle technology:

The active chilled beam is provided with three nozzle

positions. The primary air volume of every single unit

can easily be adjusted, even after mounting into the

suspended ceiling. A complete shut-off at one side is anavailable option.

Low noise:

The efciently shaped nozzles create maximum

induction at a minimum sound level.

Low maintenance:

The active chilled beam has no lter, no fan or any

other moving parts, therefore maintenance is limited to

cleaning the heat exchanger every 1-2 years depending

on the dust concentration in the room by using a simplesoft vacuum cleaner. The heat exchanger can be acces-sed simply by removing the perforated front, which is

equipped with a safety catch.

Controls:

The active chilled beam can be controlled in many

different ways. HC Barcol-Air Controls Division can

provide a solution for every (integrated) application.

Facade orientation:

The active chilled beam will supply air into the roomthrough 2 opposite slots. In ofce applications the unit

can be located in the middle of the room, either perpen-dicular or parallel to the facade.

Flexibility:

The active chilled beam is available in different

lengths. This makes it possible to select the necessarycapacity for every installation.

Comments:1. All data is based on 2-way discharge air pattern.2. Throw data refers to chilled beams mounted in a ceiling,

2.7-3.0 m above the oor, and on a horizontal discharge.3. Throw data is based on primary air temperature 8°C below room

temperature.4. Throw data is based on supply water temperature 8°C below

room temperature.5. When several chilled beams are connected together to create a

continuous line and air is supplied along the entire length of the

beam, the throw will be increased by a maximum of 10% based on the throw of a single beam, size 1200, handling the equivalentair volume.

6. Throw will also be extended if one end of the chilled beam ismounted close to a sidewall or a similar construction.

7. Sound pressure levels are based on a room absorption of 10dB,levels less than NC 20 are indicated by “--”.

8. For non standard applications and/or selections, please contact ourtechnical staff.

9. For explanation of the symbols see page 43.

Performance data AIR-FIT ®  300 Heating

Comments:1. All data is based on 2-way discharge air pattern.2. Throw data refers to chilled beams mounted in a ceiling,

2.7-3.0 m above the oor, and on a horizontal discharge.3. When several chilled beams are connected together to create a

continuous line and air is supplied along the entire length of thebeam, the throw will be increased by a maximum of 10% based on the throw of a single beam, size 1200, handling the equivalentair volume.

 4. Throw will also be extended if one end of the chilled beam is

mounted close to a sidewall or a similar construction.5. Sound pressure levels are based on a room absorption of 10dB,

levels less than NC 20 are indicated by “--”.6. For non standard applications and/or selections, please contact our

technical staff.7. For explanation of the symbols see page 43.

Comments:1. All data is based on 2-way discharge air pattern.2. Throw data refers to chilled beams mounted in a ceiling,

2.7-3.0 m above the oor, and on a horizontal discharge.3. Throw data are based on primary air temperature 8°C below room

temperature.4. Throw data are based on supply water temperature 8°C below

room temperature.5.

4. Throw will also be extended if one end of the chilled beam ismounted close to a sidewall or a similar construction.

5. Sound pressure levels are based on a room absorption of 10dB,levels less than NC 20 are indicated by “--”.

6. For non standard applications and/or selections, please contact ourtechnical staff.

Installation, Maintenance & Cleaning

Installation

There are two solutions for tting the AIR-FIT® active chil-led beam.

- Exposed Tee Systems- Bolt-Slot Systems

In both solutions the weight of the chilled beam must besecured by wire to the building construction, not loading

the false ceiling themselves.

Duct connection

The active chilled beam is equipped with 1 or 2 circular

spigots for duct connections. In the case of 2 INLETS

on one unit, we recommend a symmetric connection byusing equal connecting lengths or a T-connection.

Coil connection

The heat exchanger is equipped with multiple (separate)circuits for heating and cooling (4-pipe system).Connections are made of copper. The cooling andheating circuits are indicated by blue respectively red

marks. For further information we refer to page 25.

Connection can be executed by pressed or solder con-nection. As an alternative we recommend the use of

exible hoses with quick-lock connectors which can be

supplied as an accessory. (see page 25 and 40)

Changing the airside connection

 Airside & Waterside connection:

As a standard the waterside connection is at the rightside looking at the air ow direction.

The construction of the chilled beam allows to demountthe plenum box easily and to rotate it 180º.

Maintenance

The perforated screen or linear bar needs to beremoved to clean the heat exchanger as per the

following instructions (see gure 7 on page 24):

Step 1: Push the perforated screen upward, close to one of the end caps.

Step 2: Push the whole panel aside simultaneously in a

linear direction to the end cap as mentioned instep 1.

Step 3: By this movement the perforated screen on the other side can now be removed. The panel will still be connected to the active chilled beam by

two safety catches.

Step 4: Use a conventional vacuum cleaner with a very

soft brush and clean the coil carefully.

Retting the perforated screen is done in reverse order.

The AIR-FIT ®  active chilled beams are equipped with

multi-nozzle technology.

The AIR-FIT ®  multi-nozzle technology consists of threenozzle groups on both sides with different diameters. The position (1, 2 or 3) of the nozzle can be adjusted.

At constant static pressure, the primary airow can be

changed.

Multi-nozzle technology

Adjusting multi-nozzles

The only tool needed to adjust the multi-nozzle is aPhilips head screwdriver.

Step 1: Remove the perforated screen (see gure 7).

Step 2: Unscrew all screws from the sliding plate.

(1 full turn)

Step 3: Move the sliding plate into the desired position.*

Step 4: Tighten all screws (hand tight).

Step 5: Replace the perforated screen.

*Factory setting: nozzle position 2.

Applications, system A:

Mechanical ventilation with analogue temperature control

Active chilled beam, suitable for cooling and heating

ofce spaces.

The amount of fresh air is controlled by a manual

setting on mechanical air dampers. The temperatureis controlled by a simple 230 V AC analogue controlthermostat.

The actuators for the cooling and heating valves are

connected to the 230 V AC thermostats. The set pointroom temperature is controlled by opening or closingthe valves.

The dead zone between heating and cooling is 2 K.

Application in meeting rooms

Meeting rooms (as shown in the drawings) need moreventilation air than ofce spaces. This can be accom-

plished by applying multiple and/or larger models.More than 5 air changes (circulation) per hour mayincrease the risk of draught. In that case we recommenda different approach, system F (see page 36) can offer a

possible solution in this situation.

Features

• Manually set primary airow.

• Analogue thermostat for cooling and heating.

 Advantages

• Easy to install.

• Simplied control adjustment.

• Limited number of components.

 Important notes

• Every unit must be manually commissioned on air

volume.

• Adjustment of primary airow afterwards is time

consuming.• The system is pressure dependent. Therefore the

performance depends on accuracy of the air sidedcommissioning.

• The dead zone between cooling and heating is xed.

• This system operates on a stand alone basis.

• 230 V AC operation.

Applications, system B:

Mechanical ventilation with digitale temperature control

Figure 11: wiring diagram system B

Active chilled beam, suitable for cooling and heating

ofce spaces.

The amount of ventilation air is mechanically controlled

by manually set ventilation valves. The temperature is

controlled by a DDC control thermostat.

The actuators for the cooling and heating valves are

connected to the control unit. The room temperature ismeasured by the room thermostat with digital displayand set point adjustment. The required temperature iscontrolled by opening or closing the valves. The dead

zone between heating and cooling is 1 K (adjustable).

Application in meeting rooms

Meeting rooms (as shown in the drawings) need moreventilation air than ofce spaces,. This can be achieved

by multiple and/ or larger units. However, more than 5

air changes (circulation) per hour may increase the riskof draught. In those cases we recommend a differentsolution. System F (see page 36) may provide a solution

for such a situation.

Features

• Manually set primary air volume.

• User interface with digital display and override switch.

 Advantages

• Easy installation.

• DDC controller, free to program (at work).

• Digital temperature sensor.

• Network possibilities (LonMark® or BACnet®) andconnection possibilities with primary installation.

• Adjustable dead zone.

• Different possibilities for energy reduction by expansion

with occupancy detection and light and daylight controls.• 24 V AC operation.

• No extra components are needed for the master/slave

Considerations

• Every unit must be manually commissioned on air

volume.

• Adjustment of primary airow afterwards is timeconsuming.• The system is pressure dependent. Therefore the

performance depends on accuracy of the air sidedcommissioning.

Active chilled beams for cooling and heating ofces and

fan coil units with high performance diffusers for cooling,

heating and CO2 control in meeting rooms.

System F is identical to earlier described system E inregard to ofce spaces.

Application at meeting rooms

The amount of ventilation air is based on the CO2 level

in the room and controlled by a DDC controller equippedwith a high accurate air volume measuring device. This

enables the regulation of air volume between a minimum

and maximum value. The maximum value corresponds

with the total air volume necessary for the maximum

number of people in the meeting room. The fresh air sup-ply is connected to the inlet plenum of the fan coil unit.

The room temperature is set to the desired level with

the same digital controller while the fan coil runs at aconstant speed (RPM). The actuators for the coolingand heating valves of the fan coil unit are connected

to a controller. The room temperature is measured bya temperature sensor with digital display. The set pointtemperature is achieved by opening or closing the valves.

The dead zone between heating and cooling is 1 K. This

can be programmed at works.

Features

• Digital volume controller with very accurate air volume

control.

• User interface with digital display and override switch

• Suitable for Building Management Systems.

• The meeting rooms are CO2 controlled.

  Advantages

• No draught risk in the meeting rooms.

• Volume and temperature adjustments in one controller.

• Highly accurate volume measurement and control.

• DDC controller, free programmable (at work).

• Digital temperature sensor.

• Network possibility (LonMark® or BACnet®) andconnection option with primary installation.

• Adjustable dead zone by HC Barcol-Air software engineers.

• Different options for expansion and energy reduction

such as occupancy detection and light and daylightcontrol.

• Manual commissioning of the airside volume is not

necessary.• 24 V AC operation.

• No extra components necessary for master/slave

control.• Adjusting the primary air volume parameters is

possible by remote control.• Simple and inexpensive to complement with a relative

humidity controller.

Considerations

• More components are needed as compared earlier

described systems (A, B & C).

Specifcation description

Specifcation HC Barcol-Air AIR-FIT ®  active chilled beam

The chilled beam type AIR-FIT ® , manufactured by HC Barcol-Air, shall be used to compensate for the external

and internal heat load and shall maintain the thermal comfort in the room within acceptable noise criteria andother comfort parameters.

Control description

Primary air will be supplied by a fresh air handling unit into the distribution plenum. The static pressure in theplenum will “force” the primary air through the induction nozzles into the mixing section and from the mixing

section the air will be equally distributed by the two opposite slot diffusers into the room. The special construction of the jet nozzles (provided with 3 different diameter positions) will induce return air

from the room through the return perforated screen or linear bar, located in the center between the two opposite

slots. This air will pass a cooling and/or heating heat exchanger before it mixes with the primary air and before itwill be supplied back into the room.

Construction of the chilled beam:

• A low height distribution plenum box with one or two circular inlets, dependening on of the length of the

chilled beam, connects the fresh air connections with the beam and distributes the primary air equally overthe multiple jet nozzle plates. The plenum shall be made of galvanized sheet steel.

• A multi nozzle plate, adjustable in 3 different opening positions, injects the conditioned air into the mixing

section of the beam. The nozzle position shall be easily adjustable by using a Philips head screw driver.

• Room air returns through the heat exchanger also into the mixing section.•  A high capacity cooling coil shall be standard (2-pipe system) and a heating coil shall be optional (4-pipe

system). Both heat exchangers shall be made of copper tubes provided with aluminium ns. The heat ex-

changer shall have a 12 or 15 mm diameter water connections (depending on units size) and connections

shall be located in vertical direction. The heat exchangers need to be 20 bar pressure tested at the factory.

• The diffuser for the return air shall be a perforated screen or provided with linear bar grilles. This diffuser

must be removable and provided with a self-supporting hanging provision and a safety catch.

•  The supply air diffuser shall be two linear slots, constructed from galvanized steel and designed in such a

way that the “Coanda” effect is maintained and that a proper and comfortable air distribution in the room isguaranteed.

Dimensions

• Width: The chilled beam shall be available in standard width 295 (model 300) or 595 mm (model 600).

• Length: The lengths can be variable, but shall be available in standard lengths of 1200, 1500, 1800, 2400

and 3000 mm.• Height: The height of the chilled beam (including distribution plenum) shall not be more 210 mm (model 300)

or 242 mm (model 600).

Finish

• The short sides of the chilled beam shall have 6 mm diameter mounting holes for easy installation.

• The visible housing of chilled beam shall have RAL 9010 powder coated nish with 70% gloss.

Other RAL colors available on request.
