The Erasmus Programme began in 1987 under the EU Commissioner Peter Sutherland. Since that time the

Higher Education Authority (HEA) has been the Irish National Agency.

The Programme has played a key role in promoting international education among Irish HEIs. Erasmus has also helped create the ground for the Bologna Process.

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS

The student must be either a national of a country participating in the Lifelong Learning Programme or a national of another country (third country) enrolled in

regular courses in institutions of higher education in the participating country, under the conditions fixed by the participating country, taking into account the nature of

the programme.

1 Student Mobility - Study Periods

• Students must be at least in second year of their studies Minimum 3 months duration - maximum 12 months

duration Full-time undergraduates and postgraduates Full recognition of studies and reintegration into the home

institution Waiver of tuition fees at the host institution Bilateral institutional agreements between sending and

receiving institution Grant is paid as a lump sum to the student Students may retain higher education grant Each student is issued with a Learning Agreement prior to

study period

2 Student Mobility - Placements

Institutions may apply directly or as part of a consortium of HEIs and other organisations No need for bilateral agreements between sending HEI and host eligible enterprise Students may undertake a placement from Year 1 onwards Placement in enterprises, Training Centres, Research Centres and other organisations Minimum duration 3 months – maximum 12 months From Level 6 NQF upwards (Higher Certificate HETAC and DIT) A study visit and a work placement can be combined (study rate) Each student is issued with a Training Agreement prior to placement Students may retain higher education grant

3 Erasmus mobility grants for students with disabilities

Part of an EU policy to widen access to LLP for those from disadvantaged groups and to address actively the special learning needs of those with disabilities through the use of higher grants to reflect the additional costs of disabled participants

The NA may allocate additional funding for these students/teachers in addition to the approved individual amounts

HEIs can submit to the NA applications for special allocations for students/teachers with severe disability or exceptional special needs by the start of the academic year with supporting testimonies from HEI and Doctor
