THE RISE

In 2008, Bitcoin was conceived in Japan by a developer whose pseudonym is Satoshi Nakamoto, became operational in 2009.

The lure of low(often zero) transaction fees(as opposed to 2-4 percent charged by credit card companies) and anonymity led to the popularity of Bitcoin.

Money can be sent and received instantly anywhere, at anytime, without a bank of middleman.

There are conflicting reports on how anonymous Bitcoin is, but the general consensus is that it is difficult to trace users.

The perceived anonymity associated with Bitcoin transactions makes it a useful tool for transfer of funds by criminals or purchase of illegal items.

Before the original Silk Road, the online black

market, was shut down by the FBI, it was

processing $1.9 million per month in Bitcoins.
