AIKIDO AND PSYCHOTHERAPY CE WORKSHOP

Aikido can be describedas moving meditation.It requires stilling o themind even as the body is
in action. Aikido provides an em-bodied, practical, and spirituallybased practice that aids cliniciansin conducting and understanding
psychotherapy.Aikido is a mindulness prac-tice that can be applied by psy-chotherapists both with clientsand or sel-care. Experiencing thediference between being of bal-ance and in balance and the enjoy-ment o learning to roll with thepunches and return to a centeredstance is a practice o resilienceand learned optimism.
In this workshop we will prac-
tice Aikido techniques that are o-cused on developing therapeuticpresence, staying centered whenchallenged by clients, and blend-ing empathically with clients. Telow impact section will create anideal introduction or non Aiki-doists who want to learn: aiki practices or cultivating
compassion aiki practices or developing
unconditional positive regard
blending as empathy getting of the line o clients
intense emotionsAs with meditation, the prac-
tices in Aikido induce states oharmony (ai) and spirit (ki) thatcan also be described as ow,higher states o consciousness, andpeak experiences. Tus, Aikido
can provide therapists with anexperiential grounding in spiritu-ality. As Wendy Palmer points outin Te Practice of Freedom, AikidoPrinciples as a Spiritual Guide (p. 5)

Soa University ounder RobertFrager had with Hiroshi Kato Sen-sei. Frager trained with Kato Sen-sei in Japan starting in 1965, thenlater studied with him in the U.S.rom 1996 onward. Both Frager

An early student ohumanistic psychol-ogy, aylor was presentat some o the earliesttranspersonal psychol-ogy conerences in the1970s. Combined withhis long-standing interest
in Eastern religions, thisexposure helped develop his schol-arly interest in the study o con-sciousness itsel, which he placedat the center o the psychologicalexperience.

Eugene aylor
Eugene ounded the AikidoClub at Harvard which he headedor 25 years and he wrote a classicpaper on the evolution o Aikidorom a martial art to a spiritual dis-cipline. He and I taught experientialseminars on Aikido and psychother-apy at Saybrook or 15 years.
He was a true scholar but alsoa drummer in Haight Ashbury inthe 1960s and had a 4th degreeblack belt in Aikido.
How important his wise, honest,lively presence was, how unassum-ingly collegial and riendly he was,how sae it elt to be around hisintellectual guidance and clarity, andhow rare was the intellectual horizonhe possessed and natural leadershiphe carried. Olga Louchakova
