Success is bringing together people who have nothing in common but a dream. I truly believe that this is what AIESEC continues to do: uniting people from around the world through the vision of creating globally minded leaders. Through this unique experience, many post-secondary students are given the opportunity to engage

with our external partners and develop skills that they are able to use in their professional careers.

As President of AIESEC Carleton, I have had the chance to see how this organization has impacted myself and the other students with whom I work. AIESEC has given me the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals from around the world and to challenge myself constantly. The opportunities that AIESEC has given me have pushed my personal development and allowed me to accomplish things that I never would have imagined possible at 20 years of age. I truly believe that I am leading an organization that is in the business of changing lives.

I look forward to driving AIESEC Carleton to new heights and engaging the Carleton University and Ottawa communities in our organization. I invite you to learn more about our organization and the amazing stories that our members, interns, alumni and partners have to share. AIESEC Carleton is looking to achieve sustainable and remarkable growth in 2011, and we want you to be a part of that.

“How did you first get involved with AIESEC?”

I come from Greece.

I was first a member, and then I became President of an organizing committee for one of the chapter's projects. I enjoyed the learning environment and started becoming more and more interested in AIESEC.

I came in 2010, from January till August. I worked for Carleton University, at the Career Centre and co-op office. It was a Technical Internship and I was supporting the Technology Officer of the department with everyday duties and other projects.

My role was quite a bit of jack-of-all-trades. The main duties included supporting students in accessing their online services, and updating and maintaining the website. As well, I also maintained the database of employer contacts, sent newsletters, all the while assisting the Marketing Officer.

I learned to work in a North American professional environment, and how to serve people in the field of Information Technology. Overall, I drastically improved my English and learned how to work and live abroad with all the challenges such a situation brings.

Now, I consider myself an AIESEC alumnus, having completed the whole AIESEC experience. I look forward to all the possibilities that this stage brings.

Fahad Sami

“When did you attend Carleton University? What program did you study?”

I studied at Carleton University from 2000-2004. I graduated with honours from the Bachelors of Commerce program with a concentration in Accounting.

I am a senior manager of Allocations and Data Analysis at United Way.

My first role with AIESEC was as VP Finance for the National Leadership Development Conference in 2004. It was a conference designed to explore the social issues affecting youth and businesses today.

During my time as an AIESECer, I was fortunate enough to attend a national conference in Toronto. I mostly remember getting to meet some pretty phenomenal young professionals while learning a lot about the student-driven AIESEC culture.

From a practical standpoint, my time at AIESEC definitely helped me transition into the workforce. My role as VP Finance gave me the opportunity to manage a fairly substantial budget, negotiate with suppliers, and report to the board of advisors. All of this added up to some pretty stellar experience (that helped me get my first job), and gave me skills that I continue to hone and use to this day.

“Overall, how did you benefit from being an AIESEC member?”

Aside from the practical points, AIESEC shaped my view of the world, and helped strengthened my sense of social justice. I’m still constantly inspired by AIESECers – many of the friends I made during that time are still doing great things across the globe. All that to say, overall, AIESEC inspired me, and continues to do so.

Unfortunately, I'm not currently a very active alumni. I will, however, say that I certainly feel connected to AIESEC, thanks to all the outreach from the current Carleton LC. I would love to play a more active role in the near future! I'd welcome the chance to give back to AIESEC/AIESEC Carleton in some way. It's not just about giving back - it's also an opportunity for me to learn as well: AIESECers have a tendency to see the bigger, more hopeful picture of the way the world can (and should) be - we could all use a reminder of that from time to time!

AIESEC Carleton is hosting the Ontario Atlantic Regional Conference (OARC)

OARC will bring 200 AIESEC members from across Ontario and Halifax to Ottawa for a unique and stimulating leadership development experience. The focus of the conference is on giving new members greater exposure to AIESEC.

OARC presents opportunities for delegates, local partners, and established AIESEC alumni to network and exchange ideas. Among other skills, delegates receive high intensity training on marketing, team management, brand awareness, and social entrepreneurship in order to contribute to the objectives of AIESEC.
