In 1973, Lori was a member of the first class of the Veterinary Technology program at

Maple Woods Community College (a program her soon-to-be husband, Dr. G. T.

Barrows, and other Northland veterinarians helped establish). There she distinguished

herself as not only an excellent student, but also someone who was highly motivated and

had exceptional technical skill. In 1977, Lori was killed in a tragic car accident. To

remember her and her talent, family and friends established the Lori B. Barrows Memorial

students recognizing academic excellence and leadership qualities.

Margaret Falls came to MCC (then the Kansas City Junior College) in 1964 and was an

English teacher at Penn Valley until her retirement in 1982. When her husband Kellogg

died in 1962, Falls set up a fund in his memory, hoping it would eventually reach a self-

sustaining amount. When she died in 1999, she assured it would. Her will placed

$25,000 into that fund (the fund also collects donations from co-workers, friends and

former students). Falls also gave to other institutions-more than half her estate went to

charity.

Association causes. As a workers' advocate in Washington, Harold labored diligently with

campuses; he established the multi-million dollar Business, Industry and Agency training

program; he brought the Francis Institute to Metropolitan Community College; he

developed the concept, and led the implementation of the TALENT (teacher preparation)

program; and he oversaw the doubling of enrollment growth at the three campuses.

MCC-Longview. His plans for the United Way campaign were taking shape and he'd

received praise for an article he had written. He left work in high spirits. The day ended

tragically. He died in his sleep that night, leaving his wife, two sons and a multitude of

friends and co-workers stunned. This scholarship was set up in his memory.

The Wright-Seburn Scholarship fund was established in 2003, in loving memory of Opal

Seburn, who was a former student of the Junior College of Kansas City prior to it

becoming the Metropolitan Community College District it is today. The Scholarship was

set up by Dr. Dorothy Wright, who spent more than 40 years at Metropolitan Community

College, first as an instructor, then Counselor, Registrar, Dean of Instruction, and Acting

President of the Penn Valley Community College. Throughout her career, it was not

uncommon for Dr. Wright to assist students who were having financial difficulties with

paying tuition and fees, or purchasing books. Many of those students who were helped by

Dr. Wright never knew that the "emergency monies" that were mysteriously found actually
