Corporate Responsibility Initiatives

The Power of Working Collaboratively

To be successful today, the industry and its supply chain partners must contend with heightened expectations from a range of stakeholders on complex corporate responsibility issues, from improving global working conditions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to sourcing materials throughout the supply chain.

What We DoWe bring our members together and work collaboratively to develop solutions to common corporate responsibility challenges they face, in a way that respects human rights. AIAG understands the range of CR issues affecting the industry today, and we stay on top of changing conditions and expectations. Using this intelligence and our unique position at the nexus of multiple industries and companies, we develop the insights, trainings and tools our members need to operate responsibly—and profitably.

How We Do ItOur corporate responsibility work is guided by our CR Steering Committee, which is facilitated by AIAG and comprised of senior staff volunteers from our member companies. Through industry collaboration, our Committee promotes responsible business practices, serves as a resource for domestic and international CR issues, develops innovative solutions and tools that enhance corporate responsibility stewardship, education, efficiency and effectiveness, and conducts awareness symposiums and conferences as well as technical training and workshops.

Get InvolvedWe are currently working on several important initiatives, including:

• Conflict Minerals • Global Chemical Management and Reporting • Environmental Performance Metrics & Benchmarking

Now the Cost of Quality Costs You…NOTHING

Transformational…What else can you call it when a plant saves more than $70 million over five years through applying the principles in AIAG’s Cost of Poor Quality assessment and strategy to their operations?

Some things are so good you just can’t put a price tag on it. That’s how AIAG feels about its Cost of Poor Quality Guideline—and that’s why starting in 2013, AIAG members and non-members can download The Cost of Poor Quality Guideline for free.

Most companies waste up to 35% of their operating budgets doing things less efficiently than possible or failing to capitalize on opportunities. Quantifying defects in financial terms makes it easier to identify, prioritize, and target those areas that are primed for corrective action. The Cost of Poor Quality Guide helps you measure what poor quality actually costs your company, so you can stop losing sales and repeat business, save on materials, time and other resources, and pinpoint exactly what kinds of training your team needs to stop the bleeding right now.

The Cost of Poor Quality e-Guide is supplemented by AIAG’s Cost of Quality Workshop, a 6-hour course with a case study video that demonstrates with real-world examples why assessing your cost of quality may be the most effective and worthy management tool you’ve ever applied. Why? Because it helps ensure that your team manages quality in the same way that it manages the rest of the organization—using money as the measuring stick.

Workshop participants learn how to identify the price of nonconformance and conformance, calculate the company’s cost of quality, and use these concepts to accelerate their organization’s quality improvement strategy.

Get your free Cost of Poor Quality Guide today by calling AIAG Customer Service at (248) 358-3003 or visiting www.aiag.org.

AIAG helps ensure that your organization stays informed and compliant with customs regulations. To this end, AIAG offers:• In-depthcustomsinformationkitsandpublications.• Annual conferences that explore updates and current issues.• TrainingprogramsonHarmonizedTariffSchedulesandNAFTA

Industry Issue

AIAG member companies and industry stakeholders are challenged with managing the risks of climate change. The time was right to progress from lean production to sustainable production. Forward-looking companies are going beyond their direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and looking at the risk of indirect GHG emissions such as purchased electricity, transportation of goods, and the production of materials purchased from suppliers. However, the industry needed a consistent way to calculate various GHG emissions.

Unique Insight

Automotive manufacturers and suppliers collaborated on a harmonized process for

estimating, collecting and reporting manufacturing facility-based GHG

emission data. As a result, a consistent approach, methodology, tool and

format for calculating GHG emissions were developed for suppliers’ use in

reporting to OEMs and other customers.

Industry Issue

Chrysler, Ford and General Motors each had its own production part approval process (PPAP), forcing suppliers to understand varying terminology and submission requirements. With a PPAP, the OEM gains evidence that all customer engineering design record and specification requirements are properly understood. Standardizing the production part approval process increases a supplier’s ability to produce products that consistently meet customer requirements during an actual production run.

Unique Insight

In 1993, working under the auspices of AIAG, the three automakers agreed

to work together to standardize the PPAP manual. The revision included

procedures and reporting formats for reviewing supplier submissions

of production parts for customer approval.

The Power of Collaboration

Results

With standardized PPAP, an OEM knows that a supplier understands its requirements. The supplier benefits because approval is made prior to production, lessening the chance for error. In addition, the supplier can use common terminology and standard forms among customers. Other benefits include quick problem resolution and significant quality enhancements over the product’s life cycle.

Cost of Quality Workshop The cost of quality has been a subject of discussion for over 45 years but is rarely used as a management tool. Instead, it is typically used to provide a means of measuring defects in manufacturing. But defects occur everywhere in an organization and quantifying them in financial terms makes it easier to identify, prioritize, and target those that are high leverage for corrective action. Cost of quality helps ensure we manage quality in the same way that we manage the rest of the organization, using money. This training utilizes the practices taught in AIAG’s The Cost of Poor Quality Guide. Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) Overview Develop a real-world, functional understanding of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. ISO/TS 16949 internal auditors or second-party auditors, anyone involved in developing design and/or process FMEAs or in the implementation of ISO/TS 16949 will benefit from learning about the common set of requirements that should be used to implement FMEA techniques into design and manufacturing processes. Global Chemical Awareness TrainingFor AIAG Members, the Industry’s Best Chemical Training is FREE—and Just a Click Away

A lot of people don’t like to ask for help—and we get that. But when it comes to global chemical regulations, this is the time you want to stand on the shoulders of AIAG’s chemical reporting member experts.

The dramatic rise in chemical regulations has put incredible pressure on automotive suppliers. The simple fact is that the vast majority of suppliers do not understand the chemical management regulations currently placed on them. Failure to properly comply can lead to manufacturing shutdowns and damage to your company’s reputation, as well as lawsuits, fines, and penalties.

AIAG’s three-part training series targets company directors, engineering, designers, purchasing agents, and environmental practitioners—because chemical regulations impact all aspects of a product’s life cycle. The AIAG Global Chemical Awareness and Management Training Series includes a total of six hours of training on regulation management, a global product regulation overview, and an interactive session on regulatory compliance.

Failure to properly train your team on global chemical management can lead to the risk of supply chain interruption. Remember—this is not an area where you can go it alone—and with AIAG’s chemical management training now a benefit of membership, there’s no reason to.

For more information on accessing the Global Chemical Awareness and Management Training Series as a benefit of your AIAG membership, call AIAG Customer Service at (248) 358-3003 or visit www.aiag.org.
