KUHN will exhibit a 4.5 metre hydraulic folding model from its Venta NCR pneumatic drill combination range at LAMMA 2013, a

machine that folds in transport to a compact 2.85 metres.

eedbed preparation is carried out by Kuhn’s HR 1004 series pow-er harrow (folding), suited to tractors up to 250 hp. With a 1,600 litre rear hopper capacity and the Seedflex coulter bar included – plus the option of additional cultivations on the tractor front

linkage - this creates a high output combination that is both accurate and versatile.

Kuhn’s patented Seedflex coulter bar – launched in recent years and now a feature on many drills in the range - is equipped with double discs offset on the parallelogram. Large-diameter press wheels achieve ground pressure up to 45 kg per unit, thus ensuring uniform seeding depth and good seed-to-soil contact even at high seeding speeds.

The new Venta NCR drills include Kuhn’s Quantron S facility coupled to an electric cell wheel drive to provide full seeding control. This allows vari-able seed rate and allows up to 200 field records to be stored in the memory, including the variety seeded, application rate, date of seeding, and so on.

The introduction of a hydraulic drive machine to its Axis twin disc spreader range offers farmers the best control yet of broadcast fertiliser ap-plications, according to Kuhn Farm Machinery.

Kuhn extends hydraulic drive spreader range

The Axis 40.1 H EMC W, incorporating Kuhn’s Coaxial Distribution Ad-justment (CDA) technology – a patented feature on all Axis models – has been added to the company’s hydraulic drive spreader range. This machine allows on-the-move adjustment of application rates, integration with GPS, and – through independent control of each disc - on-the-move adjustment of spread patterns according to borders and field shape. The EMC (Elec-tronic Mass Control) facility provides an automatic and instant monitor of fertiliser spread, whilst two high capacity weigh cells provide a constant record of the amount of fertiliser in the hopper.

The standard Axis 40.1 H EMC W machine has a 3,000 litre hopper and is adjustable to spread from 18 metres up to a maximum of 42 metres. It is available ready to operate directly through a tractor’s ISOBUS terminal, or supplied with the CCI 100 control box for use with tractors without an ISOBUS terminal.

Other features of note include the electrically driven agitators (which stop automatically when the aperture is closed to minimise any grinding of fertiliser at the hopper base), plus – for GPS-controlled machines – a facility to automatically switch the spreader on and off at the headlands and adjust the working width on short work. The Axis 40.1 H EMC W comes with a ladder as standard.

The Axis 40.1 H EMC W ISOBUS (without control box) starts at £20,460 plus VAT.

Steel tine conditioner introduced on Kuhn mounted mowers

Kuhn will include the FC 313 D on its stand at LAMMA 2013, emphasising the new offer of either steel finger and nylon flail conditioning systems on its mainstream mounted mower conditioners going forward.

The popular FC 313 and other mounted mower conditioners in Kuhn’s range have previously only been available with nylon flail conditioners, with steel finger systems confined to certain trailed models. Market demand and a two year development programme have led to a change in policy and the introduction of a choice of systems.

“We’ve gone through a series of tests and monitored the steel finger conditioning system working on a number of our mounted models in re-cent years and are now in a position to offer the choice of systems on new machines in the future,” says Robert Garthwaite, Kuhn’s technical product manager.

ltogether 46 apprentices have signed up to begin their first year of training, which is

provided by Babcock International Group, who deliver 10 per cent of all UK work-based apprenticeship pro-grammes. The new intake includes 32 Ag Tech apprentice engineering technicians, 6 Parts Tech customer service apprentices and 8 Turf Tech technicians.

The John Deere apprenticeship was the first land-based agricultural and turf machinery programme to deliv-er training in the workplace, at the sponsoring dealership, with assess-ment and guidance from Babcock’s team of expert learning advisers. Ad-ditional training takes place at Bab-

cock’s purpose built training facility at Ruddington and the John Deere Training Centre at Langar, near Not-tingham.

Overall the programme offers a City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 land-based qualification and a John Deere LTA (Landbased Technician Accred-itation) Level 2 qualification for the engineering technicians, and a Parts Administration qualification up to Level 3 (Advanced).

The apprentices can go on to com-plete three free courses in their third or fourth year to gain the John Deere Diploma and start their adult training at the John Deere Universi-ty (JDU), using the knowledge and skills gained from the initial two- or

three-year apprenticeship.“Apprentice technicians very quick-

ly find themselves working with highly sophisticated equipment, from computerised controls and sat-ellite navigation systems to advanced, fuel-efficient engines and Formula 1 transmission technology,” says John Deere Limited’s training manager Chris Wiltshire.

“They are trained in engineering, electronics, hydraulics, diagnostics, communication skills, computing, sales and marketing. The need for skilled people working in our indus-try has never been greater, and we be-lieve that these training programmes provide the best possible qualified technicians for our dealer network.”

New flagship trailed sprayer from Amazone The UX 11200

MAZONE Ltd will extend their range of UX trailed sprayers with a new model at LAMMA 2013. With the UX 11200, AM-AZONE now offers a 12,000 l sprayer with tandem axle system

for large farms and expanding businesses needing to cope with higher yard to field distances.

With an actual volume of 12,000 litres (nominal volume 11,200) the UX 11200 offers a huge capacity for maximising work rates but with sub-sequently reduced non-productive time.

The vehicle concept is feature-packed with its fill-level regulated hy-dro-pneumatic axle suspension with roll stabilisation and tall tyres up to a diameter of 1.95 m. With a permissible road speed of up to 40 km/h, as standard with automatic braking force regulator and a support load of up to 3 t on the hitch drawbar coupling, the UX 11200 is as convincing on the road as it is in the field. The full load even with AUS, thanks to the good weight distribution, can be carried on 520 mm wide tyres. The proven Super-L boom, from 24 to 40 m working width, performs even better on this chassis and is folded in just as compactly as usual into the transport position.

As standard, the chassis features a track-following steering rear axle (SingleTrail) for good ride characteristics and little wheel track damage. As an option, the UX 11200 can also be equipped with the electronical-ly controlled, DoubleTrail axle steering. The electronic track-following steering of both axles is not only of particular importance when in row crops such as potatoes or beet but also for smaller field sizes. Here, true track-following to the tractor is excellently maintained and – above all – the boom is not negatively affected by any steering movement.

The spray agent tank follows the functionality and design line of the UX range and features a low centre of gravity. The smooth tank shape al-lows the targeted use of fewer baffles and without an internal clear water tank. The centre of gravity neutral, 1,000 litres fresh water tank is located between the two axles. With this large amount of fresh water on board, 8 internal cleaning nozzles and a hopper bottom optimised to keep resid-ual volumes down to a minimum, washing out is no problem, With the Comfort-Pack fitted as standard the UX 11200 comes with automatic fill stop, agitation intensity control and automatic cleaning.

The 750 l/min pump system offers a guaranteed effective agitation ca-pacity, even with low application rates or complex tank mixes. Depend-ing on the individual operation, 500 l/min can be used for agitation or up to 400 l/min for maximum application rates with the optional HighFlow equipment. The operator terminal features the well-proven in-house manufactured valve components and is neatly located and well protected behind the large cover. This cover helps to minimise any contamination of the control taps and yet offers very good access for quick and effective maintenance. In-cab control of the UX11200 comes from the new AMA-

TRON 3 terminal.

Silver Edition marks Magnum’s 25 years as latest models set new standards

he 1987 introduction of the Magnum series was one of the milestones in Case IH high performance tractor development, and with a design aimed squarely at meeting the needs of a new

breed of large farming businesses, Magnum soon became a byword for ef-ficiency, durability, comfort and awesome power. Case IH is now marking Magnum’s 25th anniversary in a special way.

Magnum has become the industry standard in conventional high-hp arable tractors, representing innovative technology, high performance, and reliability and the customer satisfaction and trust that those qualities create. While the name remains the same, the technology has advanced with each new generation - and the latest line now includes a limited run of very special Magnums.

“Technology can only lead the market long-term if it is high quality, high performance and highly reliable”, says Gabriele Hammerschmid, Marketing Director for Case IH tractors in Europe. “Celebrating 25 years of Magnum tractors in 2012 with a limited silver edition says a great deal about how these qualities have found favour with farmers.

“One of the key reasons for this success is that Magnum design and development have always been based on the requirements of modern farming businesses,” suggests Ms Hammerschmid.

“Forward-looking farm managers know what to expect from Magnum tractors: higher power to cope with demanding jobs in difficult condi-tions, excellent fuel efficiency, higher working and road speeds, less main-tenance, and the highest possible reliability, as well as excellent driver comfort for fatigue-free operation.”- Heavy duty and user-friendly - But even the most innovative and powerful technology cannot compen-sate for maintenance that compromises operating time, notes Ms Ham-merschmid.

“Case IH recognises that our customers earn money only when they can use their Magnums in the field or for transport work, but when they are doing maintenance those tractors aren’t paying their way. That’s why the latest Magnums are particularly maintenance-friendly and robust. For example, oil changes are necessary only every 600 hours of operation.”

In its anniversary year, the Magnum series is available in Europe in five models ranging between 235 and 340 hp (maximum pow-er 273 to 389 hp). The current generation of Magnum tractors is equipped with the very latest SCR engine technology that en-sures optimum power output with minimum consumption and emissions.

t was a double triumph for the company at the prestigious cer-emony in London where judges

from The Manufacturer magazine recog-nised the very best of British industry.

As well as picking up the Manufacturer of the Year title, New Holland’s expertise, per-formance and ambition also earned it the World Class Manufacturing award.

The glittering evening at the Grange Tow-er Bridge Hotel was hosted by captain of industry Lord Digby Jones and attracted a packed audience of over 600.

Colin Larkin, New Holland’s Basildon Plant Manager, said: “We are absolutely de-lighted, and to win the overall award was particularly pleasing as there were more than 200 in the competition.

“It shows the Basildon factory is con-tinuing to do the right things. The success reflects on the whole plant, the efforts of

its staff and our flexibility, teamwork and having a clear direction of where we want to go.”

The two trophies from the Manufactur-er of the Year Awards coincided with even more success for New Holland’s Basildon tractor factory which claimed the FIAT global group’s coveted Bronze World Class Manufacturing (WCM) award.

WCM is a strategic production system to use shared standards and objectives to measure and ensure continuous improve-ment in everything from safety to build quality and on-time delivery of tractors.

To celebrate this landmark achieve-ment the plant produced a unique metallic bronze T7.270 tractor which holds pride of place outside the site’s new Customer Cen-tre, which is celebrating its first year since opening.

More than 5,000 people have already

visited it to take advantage of first-hand training and education from the Customer Centre’s expert and experienced team of in-structors and engineers.

The Basildon factory is a key player in New Holland’s wider European success: it employs 1,000 staff, made about 23,000 tractors last year (of which 85 per cent were exported), and uses 600 tonnes of material a day on a two-kilometre production line.

Since its establishment 48 years ago, the 40-hectare facility has proudly turned out more than 1.8 million machines.

Plant Manager Colin Larkin added: “The bronze WCM award is a major accolade as it’s a very detailed measurement of what we do. We have to show that we have the right logic and rigour to achieve and maintain very high standards.”

DAIRY FOCUS...

Weather spells hard times for UK dairy farmersDownpours and a dismal summer have pushed up costs and pushed down milk pro-duction on UK dairy farms.

he time is 06:00 GMT and Devon dairy farmer Will Jones and his two staff, Chris Worrall and John Crotty, have been milking, mucking out and

spreading bedding and forage in feeding pens for an hour already.

With ice on the ground, the only warmth is from the cows which traipse into the gelid milk-ing parlour.

In-between milking sessions in the morn-ing and afternoon they consume 14 tonnes of maize, silage (rotted grass), oats and other types of feed.

It is a pattern of life that Mr Jones, 43, has known for 14 years, since he bought 28 cows and became a full-time dairy farmer on a coun-cil-owned farm at Barnstaple.

The father of two, helped by wife Jo, 39, and young son Nick, now milks 235 cows - about double the average UK herd size - at the rented Higher Living Farm near Crediton.

It is a long day, from 05:00 to at least 19:00, but that pattern received a huge jolt this year with that favourite talking point of the British, the weather.

Looking back on the year, Mr Jones recounts month after month of terrible weather for farm-ing.

“It’s been the most difficult year I’ve known,” he said.

Floods in July meant the cows had to be brought inside “for the first time in my life” to save the waterlogged fields.

Cows would normally be brought inside only from October to March.

Forage crops such as maize and silage did not get the sun they needed for maximum good-ness.

That has affected the energy and condition of the cows and led to lower milk production.

Each of Mr Jones’s cows are producing about 28 litres of milk a day, compared with the aver-age of 32.

UK production in October was 993 million litres, a 6.5% fall on the same month last year, said researchers DairyCo.

Average daily production figures for October were the lowest since DairyCo began collecting data in 1994.

Consultants Dairy Group said UK milk pro-duction had been below last year since June, with the shortfall increasing each month.

Cows milk from Will Jones’s farm goes into making Pink Milk

At the same time as production has gone down, operating costs have gone up, with prices of forage rising because of the poor harvest in soggy conditions.

Managing director Ian Powell said: “Being a dairy farmer is a challenging business at the best of times and never more so than in 2012.”

The extra squeeze on profits from reduced payments by milk processors sparked protests by farmers in July.

Mr Jones had been told he was going to get 2p a litre less for his milk by the Arla-owned co-operative Milk Link.

A drop of 2p a litre on the two million litres of milk that his cows produce every year means a £40,000 drop in income.

Continue reading the main storyHow farmers are squeezedDaily milk yield dropped by 1.1 litres to 24.1

litres a cow Maize yields are up to 50% below normal

Average feed cost increased by £6/tonne to £224/tonne Dairy Group figures comparing August 2011 with August 2012 Mr Jones said after a recent increase, he was now getting “just above” his break-even figure of 29p a litre.

Milk Link has depots in Crediton and North Tawton which produce Charlie and Lola Pink Milk among others.

A spokeswoman said: “We are very sym-pathetic towards farmers because of the bad weather.

“But the market has never been driven by costs of production.

“We have to pay a price for what we get from the market places.”

Mr Jones said the repercussions of the weath-er would be felt for at least another year, thanks to a shortage of forage.

“The next crop of cereals haven’t established very well,” he said.

“If we have a dry summer next year we won’t have enough forage for the summer, let alone the winter.”

The number of dairy farmers in England and Wales has nearly halved since 2002, to 10,688, according to DairyCo.

“A lot of farmers are of the older generation,” said Mr Jones.

“If you have another difficult year they will question the need to keep on.”

Government figures show that UK dairy farmers are more efficient than ever.

Despite the drop from the weather this year, yield per cow over the years has been increasing and is about 7,315 litres per cow per year, well above the EU average.

Robert Newbury, of the National Farmers Union (NFU), said farmers deserved a “fair price”.

“The market for dairy products is growing,” he said.

CaviSculpt is perfect for both men and women who want to slim down stubborn areas of their body that are not affected by exer-cise alone. Results can often be seen immediately after you finish your first session of 30 minutes. What’s even better is the process continues to work over a number of weeks as the body naturally clears the fatty deposits so without any surgery or pain, you can expect to be slimmer and have less or no cellulite. Most people experience results of between 2 and 12 cm circumference reductions and that’s often after just one session. The results may vary with different tissue structure, treatment area, age, metabolism, medications, and changes in hormones. Proper diet and increased physical activity will certainly improve and help to maintain these astonishing results.

almedie beach on the Aberdeenshire coast of Scotland is bordered by an extensive dune sys-tem that stretches for fourteen miles up the

coast to Newburgh. The area is part of a site of scientific interest but has

more recently been in the news with the purchase of part of the Menie estate for substantial development by the American billionaire, Donald Trump.

An hour or so down the road at Turriff is the home of CC Supplies, the Polaris dealer for the area and official Polaris sales and service centre for Moray and the SE Highlands.

Recently CC’s Chris Cumming took a call with an unusual request that linked the two locations. A film crew was in the area, spending several days filming in Aberdeen, making a recruitment film for an interna-tional oil company.

Part of the film script called for a horse galloping along the beach at Balmedie near the Trump estate. With only a day to get the scene in the can they need-ed a suitable rig for the cameraman and steady cam as well as a means of transporting everything from the car park, across the dunes, to the beach.

Enter the Polaris Ranger and a trailer suitably fitted up by CC Supplies at their works during a day set-ting up. Transported to Balmedie, Polaris and trailer worked on the set, carrying crew and kit and travers-ing the dunes to capture scenes in the sunrise, with filming running through the day to sunset.

“All in a day’s work for the Polaris Ranger,” says Chris “the UTV is ideally suited to taking this kind of terrain in its stride.”
