    The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is an international treaty aimedsecuring international cooperation in controlling pests of plant and plant produ

    (phytosanitary) and in preventing their international spread, and especially tintroduction into endangered areas. The IPPC, ratified in 1952, was deposited with Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) FAO and IICA collaborating to support this meeting which provides an opportunity for Member Statethe Caribbean to dialogue on the international standard setting process for phytosanitmeasures. A total of fourteen Caribbean countries will be represented at this specialitechnical meeting. Among the documentation distributed at the meeting includes thandbooks published by IICA on Good Practices for Participation in Codex Alimentameetings, and Good Practices for Participation in Meetings of the IPPC. These documeprovide all the relevant information necessary to guide participation in meetings of thtwo important international agencies.

    The European Development Fund (EDF) provides Community aid for developmcooperation in the African, Caribbean and pacific states (ACP). On 8 January, 2CARICOM signed a Financing Agreement for a grant of 40.5M to support Caribbean Region in achieving its objective of regional economic integration repositioning into the world economy. This EC funding came from the CaribbRegional Indicative Programme of the 9th EDF It was then the largest and mimportant individual EDF package of support to the Caribbean Region and crucial for advancing work on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME

    EDF phase is similarly geared toward helping developing countries, includCARICOM, reap greater benefits from the globalization process; bocompetitiveness; diversify exports and establish regional markets. The EconoPartnership Agreement (EPA) will play a major role in achieving the above.
