About

“Agriculture Spatial Info and Decision Support Software” was developed at Centre for Geo-

Informatics Research and Training , CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University as a part of

the Department of Science and Technology (DST) , New Delhi sponsored project “Decision

support system framework for agricultural land use management and livelihood options for

sustainable development of mountain district of Himachal Pradesh” . This application is

developed for the study area district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh

The Centre for Geo- Informatics Research and Training was established in the 80th meeting of

the Board of Management of CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University held on November

8, 2003. The Centre was created with a mission to integrate the issues of Research, Teaching,

Training and Consultancy in natural resource management, natural hazards, system simulation,

decision support system and global climate change using GIS and RS technology. A state of art

research laboratory is currently catering to the needs of the research and development work

that is being carried out at the centre. This facility provides capacity for higher end computing

applications in the areas of remote sensing and geographic information system.

Ag. DSS is a standalone application which is deployable on any workstation. The software

provides most of the functionalities of GIS analysis without the user having the need to deploy

other GIS software.

Bio Physical module

This module includes the Bio physical information of the district. It has got the following Bio Physical parameters:

1. Agro Ecological Zones 2. Elevation Scenario

3. Land Cover Scenario 4. Maximum Temperature Scenario

5. Minimum Temperature Scenario 6. Meteorological Stations

7. Rainfall Scenario 8. Soil Classification

For all these parameters both map as well as Tabular data is available which the user can access at any time.

Chapter 6

Crop Information and Management There are two sub modules in this Crop Information and Management (Block Level)

(i) Crop Requirement

(ii) Available Resources

In crop requirement interface the user can select any of the crop and can see the requirements for that particular crop as shown above. The basic requirements like suitable growing season/month, Soil type, Elevation, Optimum Temp., Rainfall, Water required per growing period. Along with this information there are some additional information like Prone disease and its remedy/ prevention, type fertilizers to be used as nutrients and Fertilizer is also made available for each crop.

Besides this the recommended variety for each crop is also available. This module has been framed keeping in view the Framers, Researchers and Students.

Page 16: Agri. Spatial Info and Decision Support Softwarehillagric.ac.in/edu/cobs/gis/index_files/AgDSS_Manual.pdf · sustainable development of mountain district of Himachal Pradesh”

Another sub module is Available Resources in the blocks. Since the information has been collected at the block level so the Five broader categories like Land cover, Elevation, Rainfall, Maximum temperature, Minimum Temperature for each individual block has been made available. Attribute data like the amount of area coming under the each elevation class, area under each land class has also been calculated, which will prove as a helpful tool for the planners as well as researchers along with students.

Chapter 7

Agriculture Decision support system(Ag. DSS) This is a decision support module.

(i) Diversification Index

(ii) Income Generation

(iii) Suitable Agriculture areas

Diversification Index Module

Diversification Index Module

This module is a kind of agriculture based Decision support system, where the user can check the Diversification Index. This is Block Level DSS. User basically planners and farmers have to select the location first then number of crops that are being cultivated there and then how much area is sown under each crop. You to add each entry and then to see the Diversification Index press Generate. The results will be displayed in the form Total cropped Area and Diversification Index. The greater the value of DI lesser is the diversification in that location.

Income Generation Module

Income Generation Module

This is another agriculture based Block level DSS where the target users are farmers and Planners. This Module as the name suggests Income generation Module is the module for the calculation of an approximate Income for crops. Here the user has to first the location (block as study area) then numbers of crops and then for each crop he has to enter the area sown, Expenditure (including seed purchase, machinery, man power expense, fertilizer etc.). Then as an approximate Market value which he will get per tonn produce. The output results will be in the form Total cropped area, Approximate yield for crops and net income on the yield. This module gives a broad area of estimation for the planners and farmers as for which crop they should consider for better income. N number of combinations can be made and results could be seen.

Suitable Agriculture areas:

This module is has been designed basically for Agriculture students, researchers and planners. In this module the Suitable Agriculture areas for district kangra can be seen and have been categorized in three classes/zones namely low hills, mid hills and high hills. The areas can also be seen on the satellite imagery (LISS-III) and can be seen that these areas automatically only take the suitable terrain into consideration leaving snow and water areas.

The area can also be zoomed and seen by using the tool bar on top of the UI.

Update Module Interface

This module makes AgDSS the best among other generic software. The module has been designed keeping in view of the long term usage of the software. There is always a question that will this software be updated and the answer is positively yes. We have designed it in such a manner that user having data for any of the year in addition to the default time series data he/she can easily update it and get the desired thematic map easily for his own data.

The interface has also got the feature of modifying the data if some how the user thinks that the data is wrong or the results that are being displayed on the thematic map are different form what being expected, then there is always an option of modification.

User can modify any data for any year for any of the Tehsil/Sub Tehsil and the results could be seen with immediate effect in the Agro Socio Economic Information Module.
