Just to get the two turns out of the way, it’s big. I always feel that the second race is most important, you’re going up against winners. Anothertwistafate is one of 133 black-type winners worldwide

and 79 graded winners worldwide for the late Scat Daddy. His

second dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) was a graded winner in

both America and Europe. She was also successful in the

breeding shed, producing the likes of MG1SW Nebraska Tornado

(Storm Cat); GSW & G1SP Mirabilis (Lear Fan); and GSW Burning

Sun (Danzig). The winner=s dam Imprecation is also responsible

for the now-3-year-old Cease and Desist (Into Mischief), a

$410,000 KEESEP buy, and a now-juvenile filly by Dialed In. She

was bred to Uncle Mo last spring.

The partners don't actually own the horses. Instead, they lease

them for racing purposes for the year. At the end of the year,

Paris Lights & Crystal Ball in the stretch of the CCA Oaks | Coglianese

    WinStar Stablemates cont.

The members share in the ownership of all the horses in the

stable and the fees they pay go to offset the training costs.

"With the first Stablemates program we had a fan initiative for

about 10 years and thought this was the next step to grow more

owners and to educate them," Walden said. "This is a great

opportunity for people to get a taste of what it is like to own

high-caliber horses without a lot of cost. It gives people an

opportunity to get in and share in the ownership without having

to be a Kenny Troutt or a B. Wayne Hughes. Hopefully, our

owners will graduate and go on and do their own thing, just the

same as if they were involved with West Point or a number of

    other syndicates."

WinStar Stablemates Racing had its finest hour in last year's

Coaching Club at Saratoga, where Paris Lights (Curlin) defeated

fellow WinStar Stablemates runner Crystal Ball (Malibu Moon)

by a neck. Paris Lights has not run back since and Crystal Ball

returned to finish fifth in the GI Alabama S. Both will run this

year and are again part of the racing partnership. Walden said

that Crystal Ball could run within the next four to six weeks and

that Paris Lights could return shortly after that. Paris Lights is

back in training in South Florida with Bill Mott.

"She came up with a little something behind and needed some

time off," Walden said. "She didn't need any surgery, but we felt

like she was worth waiting on and wanted to do the right thing.

We wound up having to give her 60 days off and we kept her in

light training at the farm and just sent her back down about a

    month ago."

Walden has high expectations for the Grade I winner in 2021.

"With Paris Lights being by Curlin, we are really excited about

her 4-year-old year," Walden said. Cont. p8

    Elliott Walden | Sarah Andrew

    WinStar Stablemates cont.

Walden continued, "They tend to get better with age. She's a

filly who has done nothing wrong and improved in all her starts.

I think she's going to be one of the

best fillies in the country this year."

The 2021 roster for the stable

    consists of 12 horses. Walden

explained that they are all fillies

because WinStar owns many of its

    colts in partnerships with other

    stables, including the China Horse

    Club, and because well-bred fillies

always have the potential to join

    the WinStar broodmare band when

    done racing.

WinStar's big day on Friday began

    with Signify (Speightstown), the

    winner of a $15,000 maiden

claimer at Turfway Park. About an

hour and 20 minutes later, Gulf Coast squared off against seven

others in the Cash Run, a one-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies. It

was her third lifetime start after she broke her maiden at

Indiana Downs and then finished second in the Sandpiper S. at

Tampa Bay Downs. Trained by Rodolphe Brisset, she won by a

half-length. She was purchased for $300,000 at the OBS April

    Sale.

"What's exciting is that with her win we now have 12 fillies

and three of them are stakes

    horses," Walden said. "That's not

    an easy feat."

    With the Coaching Club win,

    WinStar Stablemates Racing had its

best year ever in 2020. They won

    nine races, including the Iowa

Distaff S. at Prairie Meadows. They

have Paris Lights and Crystal Ball

coming back and Gulf Coast is an

    improving horse. Walden is also

looking forward to the debut of

    Seascape (Distorted Humor), a

    3-year-old WinStar homebred

trained by Dallas Stewart who is

    part of the syndicate.

"This definitely could be our best year," he said. "We have two

Grade I fillies and Gulf Coast is now a stakes winner. The best

    BAFFERT FAVORED IN SANTA YNEZ

The GII Santa Ynez S. at Santa Anita Sunday looks like Bob

Baffert=s race to lose as he saddles four of the seven runners in

the field, including Grade I winner Varda (Distorted Humor). A

debut winner at Del Mar Aug. 30, the $700,000 OBSAPR buy was

second to recently retired stablemate Princess Noor (Not This

Time) when navigating two turns in the Sept. 26 GII Chandelier

    S. in Arcadia. The bay rallied to victory at odds of 17-1 in the

Dec. 5 GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos, defeating re-opposing

barnmate Kalypso (Brody=s Cause) and Nasreddine (Nyquist).

Kalypso captured the Oct. 18 Anoakia S. at Santa Anita prior to

the Starlet and sheds the blinkers for this sophomore bow.

Baffert also saddles Gary and Mary West homebred Exotic

West (Hard Spun), a debut winner at Del Mar Nov. 21; and

Frosteria (Frosted), who has finished second in all three of her

starts, most recently going a mile at Los Alamitos Dec. 13.

Rounding out the field are Anoakia and Desi Arnaz S. runner-

up Queengol (Flashback); and Brilliant Cut (Speightstown), who

was claimed by trainer Doug O=Neill for $50,000 out of a winning

effort at Del Mar Nov. 20.

    CATEMACO WINS AFTER NEAR DEATH

EXPERIENCE Edited Press Release A 4-year-old colt bred in California Mar. 23, 2017, Catemaco

(Girolamo) won his first start Friday by a widening four lengths

at Santa Anita, leading throughout six furlongs in a sprightly

1:09.08, paying $30.60 to his scattered backers and earning

$36,000 for owners Twilight Racing LLC and Steve Taub, all

pretty remarkable facts in their own right.

But truth be told, it=s a miracle Catemaco is even alive.

He swallowed a black widow spider when he was 4-months-

old, had a reaction that put him near death and would have died

if it hadn=t been for the diligent response of his trainer and

    breeder, Kristin Mulhall.

After completing training at Santa Anita one morning, Mulhall

arrived at her home in Covina Hills where she keeps some

horses on her two-acre spread, only to find Catemaco lying

    down, Astruggling to breathe.@

AThe horse couldn=t breathe at all,@ Mulhall said. AThere was

froth coming out of his nose, his eyes were bloodshot and

cloudy. He was seconds away from dying.@

Mulhall=s passion and persistence prevented his death even

though she had only rudimentary tools at her disposal.

AI called my vet, Melinda Blue,@ the conditioner said. AWe were

on FaceTime and she was having her hair done. She said find

anything, and I found a box blade. Fortunately, my tack room

was right next to where the horse was. She told me to feel the

ridges in his throat to find his trachea and slice a hole all the way

through it, and he started breathing through that.

AThen I said, >Now what?= and she said, >Find any kind of tube,=

and I found a syringe casing, cut the end of it and shoved it in,

but I only had a couple minutes before the hole would plug up

with foam and stuff. I tried to shove it in, but the hole closed

and he was flailing around really bad like a fish out of water, I

tried to cut it again but couldn=t. Cont. p10

Life is Good (Into Mischief) makes good on his ‘TDNRising Star debut with a win in the GIII Sham S.

AAt that point, Humberto Gomez [Bob Baffert=s exercise rider,

known as Beto] had returned and he held the horse=s feet and

head. I got it through the trachea the third time I tried, made a

bigger hole, which I was able to open with my finger to insert

    the casing.

AThen I called Melinda back and asked how the casing would

stay in. I had to find dental floss and the largest needle I could,

tie the dental floss to the needle and try to suture the hole the

best way I could. I said I don=t know how to do that. She said just

tie a knot. Put it through the hole, through the skin and tie a

knot on both sides, and that will hold it in until you get him to

    the hospital.

ABeto was holding Catemaco until I found everything I needed,

we got it all done but then we didn=t know if he was going to get

up, if he was brain-dead or what. He got up after an hour. His

eyes were still bloodshot and cloudy, but he was up and walking.

We put him in the back of the trailer with his mom and

Humberto stayed with them, holding the tube in place.

AWe took them to Chino Hills Equine Hospital and Dr.

[Andreas] Klohnen, the head vet there, was absolutely shocked

at what he saw. The horse would have been dead if we didn=t do

what we did, so the doctor was able to administer the correct

implements for about two days before the swelling went down

enough that they were comfortable to remove it. The horse was

in the hospital about a week before I brought him back home

and he=s been fine ever since. It didn=t affect him at all.@

Catemaco is named for a horse by the same name that Gomez

said was >a freak= when he rode him as a jockey in Mexico City.

Catemaco also is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz.

AIt was his favorite horse he ever rode and he asked me to

name my foal Catemaco, so I did,@ Mulhall said.

Mulhall, 38, is the daughter of the late trainer Richard Mulhall,

who managed the late Prince Ahmed Salman=s The

Thoroughbred Corp. after a lengthy training career in Southern

California. She was an Olympic-caliber equestrian rider through

her teens before being grounded by a serious arm injury. She

obtained her trainer=s license in 2002 after working for trainer

John Shirreffs. Presently, she has 23 head at Santa Anita and

some horses for trainer Jonathan Wong at her Covina Hills

    location.

Her emotions understandably flooded forth after watching

    Catemaco win Friday.

AI couldn=t hold the tears back,@ Mulhall said. AThat=s the first

time I cried after a race. That horse means so much to me, he=s

so special. The fact that he lived through that and he had the

heart to fight through that is pretty unbelievable. I grew up with

War Emblem, Point Given, Spain and all those good horses at

their farm. I was around some special ones.@

But none as special as Catemaco.

AHe was very sharp. It was an amazing workout and an

amazing gallop out too,@ trainer Jose D=Angelo said. AI am very

happy with the work today. I think we will have a big chance in

    the Pegasus World Cup.@

The conditioner added, AHe will have two more breezes, six

furlongs next week and four furlongs the next week. Then, he

will be ready for the Pegasus.@

VALET & FORMER JOCKEY LUIS LEON PASSES A popular jockeys= room valet and former jockey, Luis Leon

passed away peacefully Tuesday evening at age 90, according to

his son David. He suffered a heart attack recently and

succumbed to the effects of the COVID-19 virus while

hospitalized. Leon is survived by his wife Juanita, a daughter

Sylvia and four sons, Louis, Jr., David, Mike and Victor. Services

    are pending.

Born Sept. 7, 1930 in Fresno, California, Leon became a

contract rider with Rex Ellsworth in the 1950s and 60s. While

working under Hall of Fame trainer Mesh Tenney, Leon was

    nicknamed AThe Cheetah.@

As a valet, his services were in keen demand and he worked

for a number of top riders over the years including Eddie

Delahoussaye, Patrick Valenzuela, Martin Pedroza, Aaron

Gryder, Rafael Meza, David Flores and many others.

Following his retirement from the jockeys= room, Leon and his

wife lived on his ranch southeast of San Diego.

    NYJICF MAINTAINS LOWER WORKERS' COMP

COSTS The New York Jockey Injury Compensation Fund (NYJICF)

continues its high-deductible workers' compensation insurance

plan in 2021 enabling New York's horsemen to better control

    their costs.

"The NYJICF is building upon the incredible progress the New

York racing community has made on workers' compensation in

the past three years", NYJICF and New York Thoroughbred

Horsemen's Association (NYTHA) President Joe Appelbaum said.

The NYJICF was able to secure a 15% premium reduction for

2020 to help offset the weeks of racing lost to the COVID-19

    pandemic.

Essentially, the program benefits remain the same for 2021"

! The base premium charge will remain at $1,000 for

    NYRA-based horsemen.

! The fees for the first 12 stalls will be free for all

    trainers for the entire year.

! Trainers will continue to receive a $300 per start

credit for every off-the-board start at Aqueduct from

    January through March.

According to the NYJICF, the plan has lowered the cost for

jockeys and exercise riders by $4,000 per trainer and $500 per

owner in the past two years. In addition, premiums for grooms

and hotwalkers have been reduced by 36%.

NYTHA also teamed with the New York Racing Association to

approve the use of $2.25 million from the purse cushion as

collateral for the high-deductible plan. Provisions in the state

budget allow for funds to be used to pay for workers'

compensation for exercise riders and jockeys in New York.

Quickly into stride from gate two, Kentucky Pharoah had early

Mucho Macho Man S. at Gulfstream Park. Away in good order,

the $425,000 Keeneland November weanling fell into a good

stalking trip as Awesome Gerry took them along at a solid tempo

down the backstretch. The 11-10 chalk appeared to be making

hard work of it as they hit the three-furlong marker and Luis

Saez was all over his mount, but Mutasaabeq responded to the

busy ride to claim the lead with a furlong and a half to race and

    bounded home a clear-cut winner.

A 4 1/2-length debut winner at Saratoga at first asking Aug. 8,

earning the >Rising Star= designation in the process, Mutasaabeq

was a distant third to Jackie=s Warrior (Maclean=s Music) in the

GI Runhappy Hopeful S. Sept. 7, then overcame a tardy dispatch

to win the Bourbon with a furious stretch rally. An 11-2 chance

in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf, the bay raced wide on

both turns and was beaten better than 10 lengths in 10th

Mutasaabeq is out of a half-sister to MGSW Cool Cowboy

(Kodiak Kowboy) who was acquired with this foal in utero for

$180,000 at the 2018 Keeneland January sale. Her progeny in

home smartly to defeat the blinkered Tiger by a handy margin.

    Runway Magic finished third.

Texas-bred Con Lima was allowed a soft time of things up front

and had plenty in the locker en route to an easy victory in

    Saturday=s Ginger Brew S.

The second betting choice hit the ground running beneath

Paco Lopez, making play through modest splits of :23.95 and

:47.55 as the stretching-out favorite Honey Pants elected to sit a

bit off the speed. Well in hand through six furlongs in 1:11.45,

Lopez gave a patented look over his shoulder before setting Con

Lima down, and the filly took care of business through the final

eighth of a mile. The final time was 1.16 seconds slower than

that recorded by Kentucky Pharoah (American Pharoah) in the

Dania Beach S. earlier on the program.

ATodd told me to judge the race, if she was keen to go or if we

needed to sit behind, to go with her,@ Lopez said. AShe broke

well and was a little strong. I had to hold her a little bit, but no

one pressured us. I couldn't believe it, so I let her go and my filly

    finished very well.@

A 5 1/4-length maiden winner for trainer Carlos David back in

July, Con Lima had a new partner in the form of Eclipse

Siyouni (Fr) | The Aga Khan Studs

    Wootton Bassett (GB) | Coolmore

    SIYOUNI COMES OF AGE

    By Emma Berry

It is only a decade since the most expensive stallion at stud in

France was Elusive City at i15,000. Yet to have runners at that

stage were Le Havre (Ire) and Kendargent (Fr), who entered

stud in 2010, followed by Siyouni (Fr) in 2011 and then Wootton

Bassett (GB) the next year. Those are the four names who

dominated the French sires' championship in 2020 and can take

a large part of the credit for an increasingly dynamic stallion

    scene in France.

Siyouni, who now commands a fee of i140,000 having started

his career at i7,000, is the French champion sire and was

second overall in Europe to Galileo (Ire). He had to play second

fiddle to Galileo in his home country last year and to an extent

that could be put down to what a difference an Arc makes.

Galileo sired the 2019 Arc winner Waldgeist (GB), while new

Coolmore stallion Sottsass (Fr) enjoyed the biggest day of his

career in front of an almost empty ParisLongchamp grandstand

in October 2020. He made a huge contribution to Siyouni's

overall progeny earnings of just over i4 million--double that of

Le Havre--but the Aga Khan Studs stallion had plenty of other

winners, 63 in total in France including nine stakes winners and

17 black-type performers in France, with 27 of the latter

    throughout Europe.

While Sottsass was the stand-out, Siyouni also sired his second

winner of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, Dream And Do (Fr),

who is now in the ownership of Katsumi Yoshida. His reputation

farther afield was bolstered by the G1 Dewhurst S. winner

St Mark's Basilica (Ire) and GI EP Taylor S. victrix Etoile (Fr).

The 62 winners for Le Havre were led by a filly trained outside

France although by a Frenchman. The G1 Prix de Royallieu and

G1 QIPCO British Champion Fillies & Mares S. winner Wonderful

Tonight (Fr) is the stable star for Sussex-based David Menuisier

and she was a another feather in the cap of her breeders Sylvain

Vidal and Mathieu Alex, who have played a major role in the

rejuvenation of the French stallion scene at what was originally

known as Haras de la Cauviniere and is now Haras de Montfort

et Preaux. Now under the ownership of Nurlan Bizakov, the stud

has a further name to grapple with this year in Sumbe, the title

which now unites Montfort et Preaux with Bizakov's original

breeding base of Hesmonds Stud in England.

Le Havre, who was 10th overall in the European table, notched

11 black-type winners in Europe last season included the hugely

promising Normandy Bridge (Fr), winner of the G3 Prix Thomas

Bryon and runner-up to Van Gogh (American Pharoah) in the

G1 Criterium International. A tall colt with plenty of scope, he

could be one to put his young trainer Stephanie Nigge firmly on

the map in 2021. Cont. 2

Rajsaman (Fr) | Haras de Montfort & Preaux

Soldier Hollow (GB) | Gestut Auenquelle

Kendargent has been one of the great success stories of the

French ranks in recent years. The non-stakes winner, who

started out at a fee of i1,000, received significant backing from

his passionate owner Guy Pariente, whose Haras de Colleville,

near Deauville, has blossomed into a breeding operation of

    some repute.

Now 18, Kendargent is in danger of being upstaged by his son

Goken (Fr), who was France's leading first-season sire of 2020,

and Kendargent has also featured as the broodmare sire of

several stakes winners by his other Colleville companion,

Galiway (GB). His fee peaked at i22,000 and is down to

i10,000 for 2021. His leading performer from 63 French

winners last season was the globe-trotting Skalleti (Fr), who beat

Sottsass when winning the Prix Gontaut-Biron, and followed that

up by winning the G2 Prix Dollar and was then second to

Adeyybb (Ire) in the G1 QIPCO British Champion S.

Wootton Bassett has also been a real success story for French

breeding, so much so that he was head-hunted by Coolmore last

year and is about to serve his first season in Ireland at a fee of

i100,000, having stood for as little as i4,000 in this third and

fourth seasons. The James Fanshawe-trained Audarya (Fr)

followed up her G1 Prix Jean Romanet win with a memorable

victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, while Wooded

(Fr) won the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye before being whisked off to

stud himself. There were also close calls for Wootton Bassett's

offspring in the French Classics: his daughters Speak Of The Devil

(Fr) and Mageva (Fr) were second and third in the Poule d'Essai

des Pouliches and The Summit (Fr) was runner-up (Ire) in the

    Poulains.

The winner of that race, Victor Ludorum (Ire), helped his late

sire Shamardal to a fifth place in the French sires' table, his 10

black-type winners, including the Aga Khan's classy Tarnawa (Ire)

and Pinatubo (Ire), winner of the G1 Prix Jean Prat.

Rajsaman (Fr) is another to have left France and is now at

Ireland's Longford House Stud but he still sires plenty of winners

in his native country, with 60 last year, to put him in sixth place.

Completing the top 10 were Juddmonte's Kingman (GB), whose

outstanding French representative was Persian King (Ire); Haras

du Quesnay's Anodin (Ire), who sired four stakes winners in

    2020 including G3 Prix de Fille de l'Air winner Directa (Fr);

Dabirsim (Fr) and the now Japanese-based Makfi (GB).

The aforementioned Goken was not only leading first-season

sire in France, but also the country's leading sire of 2-year-olds,

with his 15 winners putting him three ahead of Siyouni in the

    juvenile category.

Leading Sires in Germany That Sadler's Wells is a major influence is hardly newsflash

material. His reach in Germany is predominantly through one of

his lesser-heralded sons, the late In The Wings (GB), whose best

sire son, arguably, was Singspiel (Ire). The German ranks are

headed by two of his other sons, Adlerflug (Ger), who is

champion for the first time ahead of Soldier Hollow (GB), the

title holder in the previous two years as well as in 2016.

Physically, they are chalk and cheese. Adlerflug, a tall, flashy

chestnut, is a product of Germany's oldest stud farm, Gestut

Schlenderhan. Meanwhile, the diminutive bay Soldier Hollow,

was bred in England by Car Colston Hall Stud and has spent his

stud career initially at Gestut Rottgen before moving to

Karl-Dieter Ellerbracke's Gestut Auenquelle in 2012, whence he

has been Germany's busiest and most expensive stallion for a

number of years. Incidentally, Soldier Hollow's owner Helmut

von Finck, who has had notable success with his offspring, has

commissioned a video to celebrate the stallion's 20th birthday,

    which can be found here.

Adlerflug covered 39 mares in 2020 and he really is a stallion

who should be taken more seriously outside Germany. For a

start, he is bred very similarly to Galileo (Ire): beyond the

Sadler's Wells top line they share a third dam, Anatevka (Ger),

with Adlerflug's grandam Alya (Ger) being a full-sister to

    Allegretta (GB).

Ranking 20th overall in the European sires' championship with

markedly fewer runners than all the stallions above him,

Adlerflug was responsible for the first two home in the

G1 Deutsches Derby, Schlenderhan's In Swoop (Ire), who was

subsequently runner-up in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and Torquator Tasso (Ger), who went

on to win the G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin. A rare runner for him

in Britain in 2020 was the William Haggas-trained juvenile

Alenquer (Fr), an easy winner on debut at Newbury who

followed up with second in the listed Ascendant S. and looks a

    colt to follow in 2021.

Alenquer is out of a mare by former German champion sire

and classy sprinter Areion (Ger), a veteran son of Big Shuffe

(Ger) who was third in the table in 2020 and, now 25, has spent

the last three seasons at Gestut Etzean.

Among the younger stallions to note is Gestut Ohlerweierhof's

Isfahan (Ger), the leading German-based first-season sire in

2020. Like Adlerflug, he is a former winner of the Deutsches

Derby, and from his 10 runners in 2020, five were winners,

including Isfahani (Ger), who won the G3 Premio Guido

Berardelli on debut in the colours of her sire's owner Stefan

Oschmann of Darius Racing. Isfahan should be expected to make

a bigger impression with his first 3-year-olds, and the same can

be said for Gestut Rottgen's Melbourne Cup winner

Protectionist (Ger), the lone son of Monsun (Ger) remaining at

    stud in Germany.
