Old man rescued

Kantipur

Kanchanpur March 10, 2015

Mr. Nara Bahadur Thapa, 90, was born in Eastern Nepal who migrated to Bhimdatt

Municipality of Far-west Nepal where he worked long years as a farm labour and even

bought some land. He has neither family nor a shelter to call his own. Local family of Sabitri

Shrestha provided shelter in her old house and got the land title of Mr. Thapa transferred in

their own name. Mr. Thapa served the Shrestha family for many years. But when Mr. Thapa

got too old to do any physical labour, he was made to live in a cow shed, sharing space with

other animals in the shed. “I am given food or allowed to sleep only after I finish all

household chores of the family”, says Mr. Thapa. Some local reported his pathetic situation

to the police and human rights activists who rescued him and took to the nearby hospital for

physical checkup. “I have not eaten for many days” said Mr. Thapa with feeble voice to the

doctor on duty in the hospital.

SOCIAL SECURITY

No need allowance, give peace and constitution

Kantipur

Parbat, March 09, 2015

“When will new constitution come, babu?” 78 years old Fulmati B.K. of Limithana-6 asked

to the parliamentarian Mr. Bikas Lamsal in a program organized in honour of senior citizen

of Parbat district. Mr. Keshav Regmi, a local, hangs his radio on the porch with the hope to

hear some positive news about new constitution but his hope never realized. “We always

hear the debatable news on radio; when can we be able to hear the good news of

constitution, peace and security?” He asked.

A group of senior citizens above 75 years of age were felicitated in the program. “You may

not increase our old age allowance but give us a new Constitution for new Nepal”, they

complained to the parliamentarian. “All youths have gone abroad and the village is empty of

youth”, said Mrs. Seti Gharti and added “we are always afraid and feel insecure in their

absence”.

Kantipur

Hetauda, March 13, 2015

he is living with his son and daughter in law. He is the last member of the family that did not

own any land or house since last three generations. He used to live in a rented room and

worked as labour to pay for the rent and sustain himself. He shifted to a small hut made in

public land when he could not pay the rent neither could earn wage.

Mr. Thapa had adopted an 8 months old child abandoned by their parents. He raised the

child as his own and also got him married. But now the son does not care about the old man

and the daughter in law frequently abuses him physically. Recently he sustained serious

head injury when the daughter in law hit him with stone. It was the first time that he went

to a doctor. He expressed with full of tear, “Hetauda Municipality has threatened us to burn

out the huts if we did not leave. I rather die of burn in my hut than to leave it”.
