ADVOCACY
International Workers' Day Observed
Ageing Nepal
Ageing Nepal in partnership with International Labour Organization (ILO) carried
out a number of campaign activities to mark the International Workers' Day on 1st
May, 2016. The campaign was organized with the major theme of “Elderly as an
Emerging Workforce”. An Eight member core team under the leadership of Mr.
Krishna M. Gautam, Chairperson of Ageing Nepal conducted following campaign
activities:
1. Two articles were published in National daily and weekly in Nepali and English
Languages
2. A TV Talk Show was arranged
3. A Rally of about 200 people of all age groups was organized
4. A Workshop was conducted on "Elderly as an Emerging Workforce"
5. Thematic video was released
6. A Radio Talk Show was aired

Senior Citizens Take to Streets Demanding Respect to Work

Senior citizens march with placards to demand respect for labour in a rally organised to mark the

Senior citizens organized a rally coinciding with the International Workers Day,
also popularly known as the May Day, demanding respect to work, on Sunday.
The participants of the rally, including some 95-year-olds, were demonstrating in
order to draw the society’s attention to the fact that their labour was going
unrecognized without any evaluation despite their huge contribution to the
country’s development.
Through the rally, the elderly citizens wanted to give a message to the younger
generation that it was with their hard work and contribution that the youth
became what they were today, and hence they needed to respect and care for

Special Programme for Elderly

Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women, Children and Social
Welfare Mr. CP Mainali unveiled the government’s plan to bring special
programmes for the marginalized senior citizens. He was speaking in a
programme organized by a civil society organization to felicitate older persons of
80+ yrs from the area. The programmes was organized to mark the 26th
Anniversary of Janakalyan Pariwar.

Elderly Receiving Financial Assistance for Treatment

After Kantipur covered news on the financial crises for the treatment of Divya
Chaudhary, 65, who was physically abused by her villager in accusation of
practicing witchcraft is receiving financial support for her treatment. So far, Rs.
25,000 has been collected.

VDC Secretary Makes Off With SSF

The Secretary Bindu Lal Chaudhary of Manaraja Village Development Committee
(VDC) in Saptari district has been absconding after he collected the Social Security
Fund (SSF) meant for elderly and Dalit Children. Bindu had collected SSF of nine
months released by District Development Committee two week ago and has been
on the run ever since. As many of 200 elderly had reached the district
headquarters Rajbiraj and chanted slogans against VDC secretary demanding
action against Bindu. Meanwhile, an officer of District Development Committee
Direndra Kumar Yadav said his office has already written to the concerned
authorities to summon Bindu.

SSA at Home

Thirty six elderly including differently able people of Itahari-3, Sunasari district
have started getting their Social Security Allowance (SSA) at their home. Generous
social worker Bal Krishna Bista of the Village has taken initiation for this.

The government has decided to increase the social security allowance (SSA) by
hundred percent from the upcoming fiscal year. Senior citizens above 70 years,
single women, people from marginalized groups and differently able people are
now receiving Rs. 1000 as SSA including medical allowance. Now, the allowance
has been increased twofold from earlier Rs. 1000 to Rs. 2000 per month.

Padam Prasad Poudel, 78, proves that there is no age bar to be passionate for a
hobby. Retired teacher and journalist Mr. Poudel is busy doing a movie, TV serial
and advertisement not for money but self satisfaction. He has shown his acting
skills in 61 movies and 68 TV Serials so far. Not only him, he is also involving his
septuagenarian wife Dev Kumari Poudel in film industry. The elderly couple is
enjoying their old age in acting.

Octogenarian Quenching Thirst for Learning

Mankumari Layalu is quenching her thirst for reading and writing in her eighties.
She was deprived of education due to early marriage despite her keen interest for
reading and writing. Now, she is attending classes run by Balsewa Community
Learning Center supported by District Education Office from past 6 months. She
says "I don’t have any high ambition after this class but I wanted to be able for
reading newspaper and using cell phone."

Durga Bahadur B.K is one example of many to prove that there is no age bar for
learning. He is studying in a school at grade 10 at the age of 68. "I was deprived of
education when I was young because of my parent's poor economic condition” he
lamented. He has a desire for higher education. However, due to the poor
economic condition he doubts whether his desire will ever be fulfilled.

Yoga for Elderly

National Sports Council has started yoga and meditation camp for senior citizens
with the major theme of “Sports for All” in Rajbiraj, Saptari district. More than
100 senior citizens assemble early in the morning and start doing yoga for two
hours in District Sports Development Committee's Covered Hall.
Senior Citizens Agitation Postponed

The group of senior citizens who were agitating in front of the Min Bhawan-based
Department of Transport Management in the capital for past three years has
postponed their agitation after Government doubled Old Age Allowance (OAA)
from earlier Rs. 1000 per month to Rs. 2000. Maha Prasad Prajuli, Chairperson of
Senior Society Nepal says "The positive attitude of government influenced us to
postpone our agitation. Now we are planning to protest differently for our other
unaddressed demands.”

Older People Rebuilding Their Houses

The elderly of Bichaur, Lamjung district are compelled to rebuild their houses on
their own, not waiting for the promised government help. Their houses were
destroyed by the devastating earthquake of April 25 last year. Suk Bahadur
Gurung, 73 is one of the examples of that Village. He grieved, “It has been a
yearlong that we have been waiting for the government support. Now, I am
building my house on my own with help from my relatives”.
Chepang Community Facing Starvation

The marginalized Chepang community of remote Brushwang village in
Mahadevsthan VDC has been living on wild roots and nettles due to lack of food
for the past two months in Dhading district. Chandra Man Chepang, 67, is the one
of many. He lamented, "We have been living on wild roots for months but now
availability of even wild roots is declining. If this situation continues we will have
no option but to die of starvation next year".
