LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Valued Peewee’s Supporter, This letter may not reach your mailbox until school is almost through for the academic year and summer will be fast approaching. A quick update on adoptions: as of April 30 we have adopted 424 dogs and cats to loving families. This number of adopted pets puts us ahead of last year. For those of you who might be considering a new pet, this is an excellent time to consider adopting as the children will be home and therefore will have more time to train, play and assimilate the family’s newest member before starting back to school in the fall. One of the issues that has become a problem is the ever growing number of dogs that are showing up at our facility with heartworm disease. Treating them can be time consuming not to mention expensive. We have sixty heartworm positive dogs that are in need of treatment. Any money donated would be grateful to help rid these dogs of this terrible disease. It has been six years since moving into our new facility. With the help of your generous donations, we have realized our original dream of 12 carports (36 runs) with a capacity of 200 dogs, an indoor/outdoor cattery with over 1600 square feet, and a place with air conditioning to house sick animals undergoing treatment. Our next dream is to have a small building that can serve as a surgery ward to offer low cost spay/neuter with the possibility of no cost to the poorer areas in our community. With the never ending expanding stray population in this community we hope, as you have in the past, that you will help make this dream of ours a reality. Enjoy the summer. Sincerely, Alan W. A DOG'S LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT“Before humans die, they write their last Will and Testament, give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask…To a poor and lonely stray I’d give: • My happy home • My bowl and cozy bed, soft pillows and all my toys • The lap, which I loved so much • The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet voice which spoke my name. I’d will to the sad, scared shelter dog, the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds. So, when I

die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand.” Instead go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope and give MY place to HIM. This is the only thing I can give…The love I left behind.”

ASK MAXDear Max: I just moved here from Alaska. Can you give me some hot weather tips because my dog is not used to the heat.Well, seeing that I’m longhaired, old, and chubby, I happen to know a thing or two about keeping cool. The best information I found was this from the ASPCA. Overheating can kill an animal. Never leave an animal alone in a vehicle, since even with the windows open, the vehicle can quickly become a furnace. Parking in shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day. When traveling, carry a gallon thermos with water. Don’t force your animal to exercise after a meal in hot humid weather. Always exercise him or her in the cool of the early morning or evening. In extremely hot weather, don’t leave your dog standing on the street, and keep walks to a minimum. He is much closer to the hot asphalt and

his body can heat up quickly. His paws can burn since they are not protected by shoes. Never take an animal to the beach unless you can provide a shaded spot and plenty of fresh drinking water, and rinse off your pet if he has been in the salt water. Always provide plenty of shade for an animal staying outside of the house. Bring your dog or cat inside during the heat of the day and let her rest in a cool part of your house. Always provide plenty of water for your animal. Please be sensitive to old or overweight animals in hot weather. All snub-nosed dogs, such as bulldogs or Pekingese, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept indoors in air conditioning as much as possible. Avoid walking your dog in areas you suspect have been treated with insecticides or other chemicals, as poisonings increase during the summer when gardens, lawns, and trees are sprayed. Be alert for coolant leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste of coolant and ingesting just a small amount can result in an animal’s death. If your dog has a heavy coat, shaving your dog’s hair to a 1 inch length will prevent overheating. Don’t shave a dog’s hair down to the skin; this robs him of protection from the sun. Hopefully this helps. It did for me!

STRAY CAT PROBLEMAccording to Corpus Christi Animal Care Services, there were 3,586 wild cats collected last year in the city. Most were not adoptable because they were wild, and about 80% were euthanized. If we fix the homeless cats, then no wild kittens will grow to add to the

problem. Please tell everyone you know that we have a program called OPERATION CATSNIP. We will spay or neuter any homeless cat for $20 including a rabies shot, no matter how wild, and we can loan you traps if needed. Also, if you have a pregnant or mommy cat, we’ll help you find homes for the kittens and spay the mother. Just call us at 361-888-4141 and we will make you appointments with a veterinarian in Flour Bluff. Help us reduce the cat overpopulation by spreading the word.

Please remember, we have over 100 adult cats at the shelter awaiting a new home. They are fixed, well socialized, and FREE! Come save a grown cat from a life at the shelter.

IN REMEMBRANCEThis newsletter is dedicated to Eva Bender, who recently passed away on April 12th at the age of 88. Her support of Peewee’s over the years was greatly appreciated and her presence will be sorely missed. Eva L. Bender of Lagarto, Texas was a longtime volunteer. Every year, she donated a quilt that she hand

made herself to help raise donations for the pets at Peewee’s. She also fostered newborn kittens that needed bottlefeeding. She will be tremendously missed, but is now sitting in Heaven playing with animals and in a much better place.

WAGGIN' WEDNESDAYS AT THE LIGHTHOUSEWe have partnered with Joe’s Crab Shack located downtown on the Lawrence St. T-head. Any Wednesday that you can eat there, 10% goes to Peewee’s if you present this coupon (you can make copies for yourself and your friends; there is no limit on how many times you can help us out). You can even bring your pets if you like and eat on the covered patio. So tell your friends and family. It’s a great way to go out and have a wonderful meal while helping Peewee’s. The percentage donated goes up with the accumulated spending up to $500, which gets us 10%, $501-$1,500 gets us 15%, and anything over $1,500 gets us 20%, so the more the merrier!

ALL IN A DAY'S WORKApril 24th, 2012. Thank God not every day is like this one. 9am – Skipper, an emaciated German Shepherd, arrived after being found on Mary Street chained in a yard with no food or water. He was very dehydrated and would not eat so we immediately rushed him to Everhart Animal Hospital for treatment. 9:45 - Winkin, Blinkin and Nod, three Great Danes, were horrible cases of neglect. They were brought in by family members of a couple going through a divorce, were covered in parasites, tested

positive for heartworms and were grossly underweight. 10:30 – Batman, a baby puppy, was found in a ditch. He was a hungry skeleton, covered in scabs, and barely clinging to life. 10:45 – Georgie, a sweet kitty, was brought in by a nice lady after being found hiding in the attic of a house in a new subdivision. 11:00 – A volunteer from George West showed up with four mixed terriers from George West Animal Control who were going to be euthanized that day. 11:30 – Another volunteer brought 5 Chihuahuas from Ingleside Animal Control who were going to be euthanized. 12:15 – A man showed up with Alex, a tiny kitten he found in a car engine with a damaged eye, who was just starting to eat on her own. 1:00 – A passerby brought in a box of kittens that someone had thrown in a dumpster at a Stripes Store. 2:00 – A gentleman brought in a beautiful Husky we named Francesca that was found running down Gollihar near Ayers with a collar and a leash. After contacting multiple outlets in an attempt to find the owner, she was never claimed. 2:45 – A woman showed up with two male Dachshunds, whom she named Chip and Dale, that were found running loose at Flour Bluff High School. 3:00 – Just a short while

later, another woman arrived with a red female dachshund, we named Honey, who was also found running around Flour Bluff High School. None of these Dachshunds were ever claimed. 4:15 – A family arrived with their father’s three dogs, Walton, Dalton, and Susie. He had been stricken with cancer and unable to care for the pets anymore. 4:45 – Someone brought a box of six puppies they had found in the Lowe’s parking lot. They were skinny and covered in ringworm and fleas. 5:30 – A nice lady brought Annie, a pit bull who had been hit by a car during 5 o’clock traffic on Saratoga.

She ended up needing a pin to fix her badly fractured leg, but she walks fine now! The vet expenses for the above rescued pets ended up being $2,550. The best news is alot of these pets found homes already. We thank you for all of your financial help. We could not do this without you!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTDear Valued Peewee’s Supporter, This letter may not reach your mailbox until school is almost through for the academic year and summer will be fast approaching.
