Dlamini Zuma AU Sec. Gen.Gradually, the history, statistics, perception and of course,the of women is beginning to get established in Africa. For thevery first time, a woman has been elected almostunanimously, to head the African Union - an institution thatfailed to live up to it’s expectations since it’s creation.

Dlamini Zuma of South Africa, is the African Union SecretaryGeneral carrying a heavy load on her head. She is heading anorganisation that has more challenges than any other one ofit’s kind in the world. Well, perhaps one might exclude theArab League, an Arab regional body with many of it’s memberstates in crisis. But then, the African Union has more share ofthe Problems and crisis of the Arabs as many Arab countriesare a part of African Union as well.

Can a woman - Dlamini Zuma dare to tread where angels fearto tread? This is the question that many are asking and timewill tell. Addressing the economic and crisis in Africa, seemsto be her priority and headache from all indications as theyare the most pressing African problems at the moment.

Well, there are indications that where a man fails, a womancan successfully deliver. We saw that in Liberia. But let uswait and see as we write again in the next issue.

Felicities presentation is oneof the most attracting eventsat the London Fashion Week.

The presentation sees anumber of high class highquality designers showcasingin a little more spectacularway than the catwalk show inthe main show space.

The presentation provides theopportunity to have a morecocktail friendly atmospherewith interactions between themedia, buyers and exhibitors.

It is fair to say that it is amore modernised way ofshowcasing.

With the separation of Mens and Womens London Fashion Week events, in terms ofexhibition and catwalk shows, the menswear will now be hosted in June while theWomens will stay as it is in September.

The separation started from January when the Menswear came a few weeks beforethe Womens. It was about the most major change this year by he British FashionCouncil.

The separation of the 2 was for convenience and to address the heavy load ofcatwalk shows as well as the exhibition.

Thank you so much for featuringthis important cause. As arecording Artist in the public eyeswe all have a responsibility to giveback and help those in need.-Nigeria on my mind.

Nigeria also has 2.5 million AIDSorphans, more than any othercountry in the world.

Nigeria’s state healthcare systemis one of the worst in the world,and only 20% of those with HIVhave access to lifesavingantiretroviral drugs. The rest willdevelop AIDS and many will diealone, rejected by their familiesand communities.

“On the average, between $20,000and $40,000 is said to be spent bya traveller on each health trip.Records also show that over$500m is lost annually by Nigeriaon account of medical tourism tocountries outside Nigeria. Indeed,it has been shown that India earnsover $260m from medical tourismfrom Nigeria alone. It has beenprojected that this year India willrealise between $1bn and $2bnfrom a medical tourism marketworth over $20bn.”

My priority is to have MEDICALMOBILE CLINICS ALL OVERNIGERIA ESPECIALLY ACCESSTO THE VILLAGES.

We have become a beggingNation we have natural resourceswe should be leading and settingthe standard. We should haveState Of The Art Hospitals all overNigeria.

We should have a health caresystem like we have here in theUK the NHS.

Nobody should die because theycannot afford to be treatedbecause they have no money.

Accident site by vehicle type.

INJURY PARAMETERS: twelvethousand and forty persons wereinvolved in the accidents with1,292 (10.7%) immediate fatalities.Eighty thousand three hundredand fifty six (69.4%) persons wereinjured, 1996 (23.9%) of whichwere seen at the casualty of thefour hospitals.

PRE-HOSPITAL CARE

One hundred and seventy two(8.6%) of the patients were givensome form of pre-hospital care bybystanders. Seventeen patientshad their wounds irrigated withwater, wound coverage by clothingmaterials was accomplished in 10patients, and 5 patients had theirfractures splinted with woodenbars while 4 patients apiece weregiven water to drink or food to eat.The rest were brought to thehospital without any form oftreatment before arrival at thecasualty department of theparticipating hospitals.

TRANSPORTATION

One hundred and sixty (8.0%)patients were transported to thehospitals in ambulances none ofwhich were manned by trainedhealth workers. Table 2 itemizeshow the patients were transportedto the hospitals.

Doctors, nurses, and other healthworkers in Nigeria face challengessuch as poor pay, lack of facilities,and lack of opportunities todevelop professionally. In Nigeriamost doctors earn less than theequivalent of £500 a month, whichhas led to strikes by doctors. ManyNigerian medical students andjunior doctors leave the countrysoon after graduation, largely todeveloped countries of Europe andNorth America.

The Nigerian health care system ispoorly developed. No adequateand functional surveillancesystems are developed. Toachieve success in health care inthis modern era, a system wellgrounded in routine surveillanceand medical intelligence as thebackbone of the health sector isnecessary, besides adequatemanagement couple with strongleadership principles.

The health of my patient will be myfirst consideration.

We need to create a system likethe N H S back in Nigeria periodtoo many people dying................A change must come.

Purpose of the Physician's Oath(1948)

This oath seems to be a responseto the atrocities committed by thephysicians in Nazi Germany.[3]Notably, this oath requires thephysician to "not use [his or her]medical knowledge contrary to thelaws of humanity."[4] Thisdocument was adopted by theWorld Medical Association onlythree months before the UnitedNations General Assemblyadopted the Universal Declarationof Human Rights (1948) whichprovides for the security of theperson.[3]

Upon a physician's retirement, the"Physician's Oath on Retirement"is being proposed "to address themoral, psychological, social, andcultural responsibilities that aphysician assumes whenvoluntarily relinquishing theresponsibilities of active medicalpractice."[5]

[edit]The Physician's Oath

At the time of being admitted as amember of the medical profession:

I solemnly pledge myself toconsecrate my life to the service ofhumanity;

I will give to my teachers therespect and gratitude which is theirdue;

I will practice my profession withconscience and dignity;

The health of my patient will be myfirst consideration;

I will respect the secrets which areconfided in me;

I will maintain by all the means inmy power, the honour and thenoble traditions of the medicalprofession;

My colleagues will be my brothersand sisters;

I will not permit considerations ofreligion, nationality, race, gender,politics, socioeconomic standing,or sexual orientation to intervenebetween my duty and my patient;

It has n o tbeen an easy task, getting

women to exercise for thesake of healthy living other than for

professional sports. On most occasions,women take to exercises after putting on toomuch unwanted and unacceptable weight. Butdefinitely not as a means of regular activitywith the aim of staying healthy.

In Africa, particularly, unless a woman isinto some form of sport as a profession, itis never seen as a necessity of life.Although there are those whose day-to-day activities amount to exercise ondaily basis, and such women differ

from those who either sit athome, or work, in which

situation their work doesnot warrant enough

exercises requiredfor healthy

living.

It has alwaysbeen a problem getting women

in Africa to engage in one form ofexercise or the other. Many think that

exercise and sports is to do with elites oreducated women only. Informally educatedwomen in many parts of Africa, especially in therural areas, see exercise as unnecessary tohealthy living. But exercise remains thecheapest thing to improve health, controlcholesterol and have a healthy heart..

AishaTakes you around

Exercise

Page 37: AfroEuro Magazine - May Issue

How often do you relax? How often do you get your head and mind off thehassles and ups and downs of life?

Certainly there is much more to life than just work, school, business and othercommitments that even go to the extent of taking your mind off food.

Relaxation, is one of the most important components of healthy and goodliving. There is mistake in that assertion. Every part of the body requires arelaxation at certain times of the day.

Overwork kills. It eats into one’s brain, mind, soul and body other physicalbody components, which is the reason why taking regular relaxation helpsthe body support the soul for a youthful, quality and longlasting life.

Yoga, simsaga and even prayers, do get one relaxed. It is not only sittingdown watching TV, drinking I a pub or just doing some other tuff that get onerelaxed. It is far more than that. The mind and soul must attract one’s attentionto get the whole of one relaxed. Sitting quietly and getting rid of thoughts forat least 2 hours a day is about what one needs.

Africa Culture&Tradition

Some of the best musical instruments in the world come from Africa. Music of black origin has sweptacross the globe and can only be played with African instruments whether modified or natural.

In Africa today, young musicians have completely destroyed African arts and music. That is to say thatthe culture is under threat. It might be extinct soon if care is not taken, leaving African with nothing. Theamount of culture pollution is just beyond any acceptable proportion.

The continuous defamation,rape and misrepresentation oftrue African culture, by theyoung entertainers in differentaspects of entertainment suchas music, movies and fashion,spells doom for the continent.

Africa is in trouble. It riskshaving all it’s rich historicalvalues carpet-bombed bythose who should beprotecting it.

Africa’s rich and enviablecultures and traditions,spanning across the entirecontinent, are under threatunless something is done tosave the situation.

Africans learnt more of the badand even surpass those theylearnt from, and learn a little ofthe good ones.

African music, natural Africanmusic, which

Cry of a Polluted Culture

Was intact before the adventof colonisation, now becomessecond class.

Colonisation, more thananything else, dealt a hugeblow to African values and thesituation keeps getting worseby the day.

OUR MAIN TOPIC FORTODAY IS;

“THE POLLUTED AFRICANFASHION”

Once upon a time, the entireAfrican fashion, from the tip ofnorth Africa, down to thebottom of south Africa, onecould boast of saying that it isdecent. A fashion of decency ifyou like. But all that has gonewith the winds. There is little ornothing left to be proud of as apure African fashion.

In the last 2 decades, Africanfashion suffered it’s worstpollution with modern fashiondesigners coming up with allsorts of alien designs andcalling it African.

Majority of such designerseither live in the west, or inAfrica but with the belief that ifthey do not pollute and corruptit, they would not getanywhere with it. They seepure African designs asobsolete in nature. They seeAfrican fashion of decency asoutdated and if they do notadd a modern Europeantouch, it would not sell.

In most cases, it is only thefabric, rich in colour that saysa little abut Africa. This attitudeis very much associated withmental colonisation, or evenmental slavery if wouldn’t mindthat.

The funny and sad part of it isthe fact that most of thedesigns are purely indecenteven by European standards.African designers go beyondwestern designers in

Music, movies and fashion

Page 43: AfroEuro Magazine - May Issue

Promoting nude designsthinking that they are doingsomething creative, orprogressive.

Fashion is culture. Loose itloose your culture. But lack ofunderstanding of theimportance maintaining andsustaining standards will oneday wipe out even the littletraces of true African fashion.

Majority of African designers inthe west do not make it. Oneof the reasons why they find itdifficult to make it, is the factthat they give the west what italready has and the market isalready saturated with thesame form of designers. Thereis nothing new or different forpeople change to, whichdefinitely is pure Africandesigns.

There are many people outthere in the form of culturaland fashions touristsworldwide who are looking forsomething different from whatthey are used to as modern,and that is natural Africanfashion.

In The Beginning

“No man can know where he is going unless he knows exactly where he has beenand exactly how he arrived at his present place” – Maya Angelou

A lot of women say covering their hair with straight weaves and permanently changing the structurewith chemicals is a choice, and they are absolutely right. I couldn't wait to perm my hair at 16,because at school in Nigeria, we were not allowed to use chemicals on our hair. I had now finishedsecondary school and could do what I liked with my hair. I chose to get rid of the ‘kinks’ , I continuedto get rid of them the moment they popped out from my scalp for the next 17 years. Then when Irealised why I was making that choice and that choice alone I cut it all off and never used relaxers orweaves again. This was my realisation.

Somebody said I was ugly and I believed them. They said I was so ugly they never included myimage in beauty adverts, they never used my image to depict a beautiful woman, they didn't want meto work with the public, my colour, my features, my hair was ugly, although what they said to mewas, "you just don't look the part".

Don't get me wrong, they did use my image, it was in adverts, in newspapers and magazines, postersand stamps, and I did work in public places. These pictures will prove it.In The Beginning

Editor’s Digest

Iat some point, I decided not to botherto say anything for this edition, but thenI suddenly changed my mind.

From the first to the last page, AfroEuromagazine contains almost everything itrequires to entertain our viewers andfans. It does not concentrate onfashion and entertainment only,tourism, culture and many more, havefound their places in the magazine.

Although there is a plan to split themagazine into 2, with oneconcentrating on Fashionentertainment and showbiz related,while the other will have deal withculture and tourism, events and writeups.

It will also contain more on businessand economy.

I will also seize this opportunity to saythat the June Issue may be my last aseditor.

Until then, have a blessed viewing.

JLS Splits after 55 years might be a long time for the group to be together, but for their fans, ofcourse, it is not about time. Why do young and aspiring groups keep splitting?

Well there are indications that they are getting somewhat tired of one anotherrather than just trying to pursue a solo carrier contrary to what they said.

JLS, a group that came to limelight through xfactor some 5 years ago, havealready left their mark in the music industry. They have grown to be one of themost successful groups in the UK and even beyond.

The group, which was mentored by Louise, had a very lucky escape atqualification stage as it was a hotly contested xfactor then.

It is really one of the saddest things in life for a child togrow up without anyone to call his biological father, andno one to call him/her son /daughter.

But it is clearly the culture of “no rule of engagement” toblame. When a culture of marriage is not respectedanymore, then all sorts of wrong things will surelyhappen.

Oprah Winfrey says:

“I think we are reaching a tipping point and just maybethe time is now. One in three American children growup without a father…one in three.

Consider this –

Without a father in his life, a boy is SEVEN times morelikely to drop out of school and TWICE as likely to endup in prison.

Can you see the connection? The thread that runsthrough some of the most challenging issues of ourtime?

What’s unquantifiable is the PAIN.

If you are a fatherless son, are raising a fatherless sonor care about any man who grew up without a father inhis life -- I know I am hitting a chord with you.

Iyanla Vanzant and I begin the dialogue with anaudience of 150 men who grew up without their fathers.It is a two hour special LifeClass.

Iyanla and I will be tweeting and posting LIVE duringthe airing to stand with all who are moved to connect.

Let the healing begin”.

Janet Jackson and her hubby are really enjoying theirmarriage life to the admiration of most of Janet’s fans andeach other’s families. Janet and Wassam got Married abouta year ago in a quiet and less extravagant wedding thatattracted only their families and very close friends.

Janet Jackson, is now a Qatarimerican as she is married toBillionaire Wassam Al Mana from Qatar.

Janet is now a proud and practicing Muslim as sheconverted to the faith a few weeks ago, after undergoingsome Islamic education. For her change of faith, Janet didnot only convert because she married a Muslim, but it was along thought idea as her elder brother Jarmaine too hasbeen a Muslim for a long time now and she envies hislifestyle.

This marriage is Janet’s third. Her first marriage to fellowsinger, James Debarge, was annulled in 1985 which she didat an unexpectedly early age than anyone would have everimagined. She was too young then. Her second was with adirector, dancer and songwriter Rene Elizondo Jr. Thatmarriage ended in 2000.

Janet never bothered about hooking up seriously withanyone since then, until now. From all indications, therelationship is here to stay as it was reported that they bothlove and respect each other.
