German soldier Bernd Trautmann is taken prisoner in England towards the end of WWII. During a POW football match, the goalkeeper is noticed by Jack Friar, manager of an amateur club. Forced upon the team, Trautmann soon surprises on and off the field. Prejudice subsides, friendships start to develop and Trautmann loses his heart not only to football but to his managerʼs beautiful daughter Margaret. However, Trautmann could not have foreseen the wave of outrage resulting from his engagement at Man City FC. Thousands take to the streets against the signing of the “Nazi.” Feeling alienated and alone, Trautmannʼs and Margaretʼs loyalty to each other is being seriously put to the test. But they receive support from an unexpected direction: Rabbi Altmann, who fled the Nazis, publishes an open letter against the anti-German slogans. Trautmannʼs path to acceptance begins and peaks at the 1956 FA Cup Final when he secures victory for Man City by playing on despite a broken neck. Yet fate twists the knife and Trautmannʼs son is killed in a car accident. Heartbroken, Trautmann wants to give up. But a whole nation has learned to accept him, and so he starts to prepare for his comeback. For all those who learned to forgive, for those who had lost someone and most of all for his son, who admired him the most, he must step back onto the pitch.

THE DIRECTOR

Sandra Nettelbeck was born in Hamburg. With the short film A CERTAIN GRACE she graduated at San Francisco State University. From 1992 she worked as a journalist and freelance producer/editor in Hamburg. LOOSE ENDS was her debut on German TV in 1994, two years later she wrote and directed MAMMAMIA which won Best Screenplay and Best Film at the Max-Ophüls-Festival in Saarbrücken. With her debut theatrical feature MOSTLY MARTHA, which had its world premiere on the Piazza Grande in Locarno, she gained international success in 2001. In 2004 Sandra Nettelbeck realized her first childrenʼs movie SERGEANT PEPPER, a turbulent comedy about the friendship between a 6-year-old and a dog. With HELEN, starring Ashley Judd, she wrote and directed her first English language production in 2009, followed by MR MORGANʼS LAST LOVE in 2013, starring Michael Caine, Clemence Poesy, Justin Kirk and Gillian Anderson.

As a divorced father of two teenage daughters, with a head-strong ex-wife for a best friend, too many peculiar patients to keep up with and a new dog, psychotherapist Max certainly doesnʼt need another challenge. But when Sophie, a compulsive gambler with a boyfriend problem, regularly shows up late for her appointments, she rocks his world in ways heʼs not ready for. Itʼs not supposed to happen and it happens anyway: a therapist falls in love with a patient. And the more Max attempts to keep it professional, the more their lives get entangled.

So how can he manage to help her without getting involved? How can loving her not lead to losing her altogether? Wrestling with his conscience and his heart, torn between the patient and the woman heʼs in love with, he has no choice but to stick to the old airplane rule: you must help yourself before you can help others.

Populated with a colorful range of characters, WHAT DOESNʼT KILL US is a heart-wrenching yet delightful mosaic of stories just past the midlife crisis, of matters of the heart and identity, of everyday struggles and longtime conflicts. It takes a tender and humorous look at the highs and lows that can either save us or haunt us when we realize that the second half time is already well on its way.

Georg is a gardener in a small Bavarian town, working day-in, day-out in his nursery, which is facing bankruptcy. He doesn‘t like to talk much. He never has. His marriage has long lost all its magic and on top of that, he has trouble to connect with his daughter. Only when he is flying in his own rickety biplane, Georg feels truly free.

When the owner of the local golf course tries to rip him off his pay, because the shade of green of the grass Georg has planted there is not “as green as it gets”, Georg snaps. Just when his airplane is about to be impounded, he grabs the control stick and flies away in an attempt to save his plane and himself.

He embarks on a journey into the unknown, to places he has never seen before, full of odd and special encounters – and with every take-off and every landing, this tough manʼs heart slowly warms up to what you might call an idea of happiness...

In the dark middle ages young unruly Goldmund is sent to a monastery by his father to atone for the sins of his mother, who abandoned them. It is there that he meets Narcissus, a brilliant, scholarly novice, who is introverted and aloof. A unique and deep life-long friendship is born. Narcissus chooses to remain detached from the world in prayer and meditation. Goldmund, who is passionate, sensual and impulsive, runs away from the monastery to live a picaresque wandererʼs life, his amorous and artistic adventures leading

him to discover the extremes of both ecstasy and pain. Several thrilling years pass, until one day these friends cross paths again…

Narcissus and Goldmund is the film adaptation of literature Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse‘s bestseller. First released in 1930, the novel has been translated into more than 40 languages and has inspired generations ever since.

Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing it became dangerous for some people to live in your country. Suppose you found, to your complete surprise, that your own father was one of those people.

That is what happens to Anna in 1933. Anna is not sure who Hitler is. She is nine years old when everything begins, too busy to take much notice of his face on posters all over Berlin. But when her own father goes missing one day, she comes to realize that the man on the posters is about to change the whole of Europe – starting with her own small life.

She is forced to uproot her entire existence. Anna and her family hastily flee Germany, leaving even her favourite stuffed pink rabbit behind. From now on Anna encounters life in exile, not speaking the language, not knowing customs and manners, missing her friends and loved ones. To find a school for Anna is difficult, money is getting very short and they are fearful as they also encounter xenophobia. Yet Anna grows up, finds new friends, and learns to take responsibility. So when her family has to move away yet again, she is certain she can do anything.

For the siblings Stefan (41), Julia (44) and Tobias (34) life is seemingly alright. Working as a pilot Stefan has no problem to be attractive to women, taking it easy. However, the rekindled contact to his daughter, the result of a former affair, triggers the longing for a more substantial form of love. Stefan s̓ older sister Julia and her husband are spending their holidays in Italy, where they are trying to rekindle their relationship. But when a dog gets hit by a car in the street she immediately shifts her attention to the little animal and obsesses over its well-being. Perhaps Tobias has been a student for a little too long now.

Patrick is the handyman on his fatherʼs naturist campsite. The remaining time he dedicates to his hobby, designing and creating furniture. When Patrick loses his campsite hammer, his quest to retrieve it takes him to the farthest corners of the camping grounds. Sure enough, when Patrickʼs father passes away, Patrickʼs quest turns existential.

Patrickʼs safety bubble pops and everything he took for granted, changes. Is he mourning because of his father? Or is he thinking mostly about his lost hammer? In the meantime, the resident campers are beginning to question Patrickʼs leadership abilities, fearing for the survival of their beloved sanctuary.

LOOKING FOR HIS HAMMER, PATRICK FINDS A JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY.

When Adib regains consciousness, he refuses to go to hospital out of fear to be deported.
